Finally. This could be the best thing to happen in the History of Ever. But I’ve been diagnosed as being prone to gross hyperbole.
Either way, it’s like three of my favourite things in one, which beats Reese Peanut Butter Cups all to hell…
I saw this on stage in Stratford as well and absolutely loved it. Stellar performances all around – and I love that Patrick Stewart plays both Claudius and the Ghost. The staging was brilliant – I’m looking forward to seeing how it translates to TV.
I know what I’m watching tonight!
I have seen Hamlet with Olivier, Burton, and a few others. This present production with David Tennant (of whom I had never heard) is excellent. Thank you for presenting it. I have a bachelor’s degree in English but am a practicing school psychologist, so I can appreciate it at several different levels. Dr. Barbara Fisher
Forgive my ignorance – are these the exact words of Shakespeare? I finally understand it!
Yes Kristen, the text wasn’t altered from Shakespeare’s original (though there are cuts, as is necessary for a play of this length, otherwise it would run at nearly 5 hours).
Don’t like Shakespear & other things like it, but I do like the two top actors. They were great, but if you haven’t read or seen Hamlet, it really doesn’t make much sense. Sorry!
I’ve never seen or read it before. I remember the Gilligan’s Island bit about it, and of course Classic Trek did “The Conscience of the King” I was able to follow it and am so glad I did. Excellent, but I had NO idea David Tennant was Scottish until I heard the wrapup.
One of the man’s MANY talents is in his voice and accent work…He did a pretty good (Okie) American one in the BBC Radio play of Of Mice and Men a few months back.
I’m hoping we can hear his refined American accent in the fall on television in the US…not sure if it is a Chicago or more a generic Midwestern one…
It was brilliant! David Tennant will always have a piece of my heart, and he was absolutely amazing. Patrick Stewart was just as great, 30 minutes into the movie I went onto Amazon to look into buying it on DVD, I give it two thumbs up!
I had been waiting ages for this to air – thought it was the most accessible production of the play I’d ever seen or heard – and I’ve seen/heard several versions. The actors conveyed the story incredibly well through their performances. That said, I felt the language of the play itself got overwhelmed as a result. I was so busy watching the story told through the performances that I felt like I kept missing all the good speeches – other than the classic ‘to be or not to be’ which was given a nice quiet closeup. But again, I found myself paying more attention to the performance than the words. And really, the play’s the thing.
Saw this in London before David Tennant had to miss the rest of the run with a back injury. We were blown away, and the poster from the production is hanging on my wall now!
