Justin Bieber hysteria: Is being one of the masses, in person, worth it?

Justin-BieberImage Credit: George Pimentel/WireImageJust reading about how in light of the Justin Bieber-mania in Sydney, which resulted in a canceled performance and minor injuries and fainting, officials at New Zealand’s Auckland Airport have already reportedly decided to add additional security for the 16-year-old’s arrival later this year. Makes sense. Well done. But it also got me wondering: Is being one of the masses to greet a pop star or celebrity (or camping out before a performance) worth it?

I grew up in rural central Pennsylvania — three hours from Philly, three hours Pittsburgh — so I missed out on the opportunity to crowd into the local mall for a performance or stake out a hotel. If my level of excitability today is anything to go on, I’m sure I would have. Especially if it was The Dukes of Hazzard‘s John Schneider, who, according to my mother, was my first concert. (Sadly, I don’t remember it, even though I insisted she take me.) Do these kinds of stories end in heartbreak or triumph?* When was the first time you camped out hoping to meet someone? When was the most recent?

* My friend Sheila has a framed 8 x 10 photo in her home (and a 3 x 5 in her cubicle) of the moment she met Duran Duran’s John Taylor at a signing in 1997, and it’s THE happiest I’ve ever seen her. She was no longer a tween, but she looked it.

his 15 minutes of fame hopefully won’t last long. words of advice:
      STAY IN SCHOOL.

      • crispy

Lisa, you shouldn’t be so concerned with a 16 year old millionaires funds, although it is commonly known on here the best job you will ever have is flipping burgers. Maybe focus on your own goals instead of someone who has already achieved success for once? Stay in school Lisa ;)

IT WOULD BE SSSSSSSOOOOOOO COOL IF ONE OF US HAD HIM AS BOYFRIEND(ME)

I personally don’t get the appeal of Bieber but I grew up during the heyday of NSYNC and Backstreet Boys so I can understand the hysteria. I personally have never waited hours just to get a glimpse of anyone but I guess if you like that person or group enough, it’s worth it.

  • Hilaryy

I went with my friend to greet the Backstreet Boys at a tv appearance they were doing here in Toronto in 2005. It was a LONGGGG 10 hours spent in the blistering heat with crowds of girls I threatened to hurt if they didn’t stop shoving me. But to this day she loves me for going with her, and is grateful I was there to take pictures cuz her hands were shaking too much. So,it was Worth It.

  • felisberto

nobody is worth camping only jesus

    • Mel

But you wouldn’t have to camp, because he’s in your heart, right? *roll of my eyes*

      • whatevs

You could be the bigger person and not respond to someone who isn’t even offending you if you’re just going to insult that person.

  • Beth

The last time I camped out(if you can call waiting 30 minutes in line “camping out”) was this past December at a local bookstore to meet Josh Lieb, who’s from my neck of the woods and is the executive producer of The Daily Show. So I guess that would make me a huge geek. Oh well.

  • Celia

I like Bieber, but I wouldn’t camp out to meet him. I haven’t ever done that, but I would have been one of those girls 12 years ago when I was in love with NSYNC.
However, the only thing I’m willing to camp out for these days is Harry Potter (but I have yet to do it). :(

    • anon

I would totally wait in line for a bit for JKR. Brings back memories of binge ( > 30 hours straight) reading HP3 in middle school.

      • Celia

I’ve camped out at midnight releases, but I’ve never done it big and gone to a premiere or a JKR book reading.

    • zakia

i am always scared when i go to
      different concerts because ther are
lot of different people that i don’t know and they keep on pushing and shuving but the only concert that i love and i’m not scared is the justin beiber concert if i was ther i would say ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  • Katie

Well, the first time I camped out was for Joe Mauer when I was in 9th grade. I only waited like, four hours, but it felt like forever. For those of you non-baseball fans, Joe Mauer is the catcher for the Minnesota Twins, aka the best player ever. (haha) Most recently, I waited 6 (ish?) hours to meet/see Rob Pattinson at the London premiere of Remember Me. It was a great time, and I’m not a crazy hardcore fan, but it was worth just being there to see all the mania. I would definitely never wait overnight to see anyone, but I think it’s half the fun just waiting for the person to get there!

  • paige

look at that massive tumor cranium… god, that kid is ugly

    • crispy

      But…. your uglier

      • Jennifer

        And “you’re” rude.

    • Celia

Justin Bieber is not ugly. He’s in fact, very cute. I think he’s got lasting power as long as his parents and the other people around him keep him in line.

  • W!

T-minus 3 days, 27 minutes, 05 seconds till the Jonas Brothers vanish into thin air…

    • Celia

YESH! That’s the best thing about Bieber. He can get rid of the Jonas Brothers.

    • Taurie

I don’t think so the Jonas Brothers aren’t going anywhere! Justin is really starting to get on my nerves with him trying to act all gangsta at least the Jonas Brothers are real and don’t pretend to be something they’re not. And I sure hope Justin’s voice changes soon cuz he sounds like a girl!

  • Mel

I watched him on SNL, and was less then impressed, but while I have never camped out, I loved Hanson and *NSYNC, so to each their own!

    • crispy

At least he was on TV where have you been?

  • FATJONA

    YOU ARE MY BOYFRIEND

  • Stacey

No one. I don’t see what is so appealing about this guy. And he’s from my country. He can’t sing. He won’t be around 10 years from. At least the teen idols of the 70s could sing. And Britney while not a vocal powerhouse; does have a better voice and catchy songs… And she’s proven to be a force. This Justin kid can’t sing.

    • Julie

How do you know Britney Spears has a better voice? The last time anyone heard her actual voice is when she was on Star Search.

  • SullyJohn

There is a 14-year-old kid in my neighborhood who is a dead ringer for Justin Bieber. Maybe I should take him down to the mall, set up a table, and charge for autographs. We could make a killing!

  • Grant

His PR team help create this HYSTERIA. Why? Because it creates press.

His PR team knows about how many people are going to show up. They know and they could do something about it, but then it would just be a controlled crowd and sites wouldn’t be writing articles about him.

  • Casey

I didn’t exactly camp out but the most recent time I waited after a concert to meet an idol of sorts was in 2004. I told my friends to go on without me after an Our Lady Peace concert to meet the band. Being a Raine Maida fan I was disappointed in his arrogant attitude. It put me off and I haven’t cared to meet anyone after a show since.
