'Monsters, Inc.' sequel planned: What other Pixar film deserves a Part 2?

Filed under: Movies, News and tagged: ,

monsters-incImage Credit: Pixar/DisneyYesterday, new Disney honcho Rich Ross announced that a Monsters, Inc. sequel would hit theaters on Nov. 16, 2012. It’s only the third Pixar film to go the franchise route, after Toy Story and Cars (coming in 2011). If you had to pick one other Pixar film to get a sequel, which would it be? Poll below! (The emotional achievements of Up and WALL-E make them perfect, singular pieces of filmmaking — I want them to remain that special. While I loved Finding Nemo and The Incredibles almost as much, I could entertain them. I think The Incredibles makes the most sense because you could have explore the angst of teen superheroes (familiar) with a Pixar sensibility (which makes it fresh).

Meanwhile, what’s your best guess at the plot of Monsters, Inc. 2? Is it possible that in today’s world, children are no longer producing enough laughter to power the city of Monstropolis? That would be sad wouldn’t it?

I LOVE “Monsters Inc.” (SUCH a beautiful ending), and I’ll be inline for a part II.

However, the Pixar film that deserves a sequel even more is “The Incredibles.” Just because it’s an animated movie doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have “action franchise” written all over it.

    • kramer

what other pixar movies deserve a sequel? monsters itself does not deserve a sequel. it was thoroughly unmemorable and forgettable

      • Bob

The movie, unlike your comment, was amazing and one of their best. I cannot wait for another

      • Chip

Speak for yourself. I remember plenty of lines and scenes from this movie. The scene where Boo is unleashed at the restaurant and causes the power outage, the scene with George Sanderson (the guy who is always getting contaminated), the door chase at the end, the Abominable Snowman, and of course, the ending (the best ending Pixar has ever done in my opinion).

I will say to you what I said to my brother who didn’t like it: you must have no soul.
I’m kidding (sort of…), to each their own, I guess- I’m probably the only person in the world who didn’t think The Incredibles was that great.

      • mary q contrary

You are probably right about that, Madd, because The Incredibles was, well, you know, incredible. To say the least.

      • mike

Actually I agree with Madd. Not one of my favorite Pixar films. I personally don’t wish for any Part II of any of them. I love them, but I’d rather see original stories and characters.

      • grace

ALRIGHT LISTEN PUNK. THE FACT THAT YOU EVEN THINK IN YOUR MIND THAT MONSTERS WAS NOT “MEMORABLE,” MEANS THAT YOU ARE TRULY MENTAL.I FIRST WATCHED THAT MOVIE WHEN I WAS 7 YEARS OLD AND I STILL WATCH IT NOW THESE 9 YEARS LATER. SO PLEASE DO NOT MAKE ME MAD.

    • paige

The Incredibles is one of the few movies I believe needs a sequel- after the movie finished i said “where’s part 2″… Monsters Inc. – eh well i wasnt such a big fan but id still go see it

      • Shell

Monsters Inc totally deserves a sequel…. its so memorable and had the BEST ending! I would definitely go see it !

      • Celia

I agree. I think the Incredibles can actually work very well as a sequel because they left the ending open a little bit. Plus I would LOVE it!! The Incredibles is my fave Pixar movie!

    • mary q contrary

SQUEEEEE!!!!! Seriously, I think that’s the first time I’ve ever done that, but…………. well, squee!!!!! This makes me feel all warm and mushy. CANNOT wait.

    • LAJackie

I love Monsters Inc and am still bitter that it didn’t win the Oscar that year.
*sings* Put that thing back where it came from or so help me – so help me! so help me!

  • Christopher

If Brad Bird has more story to tell, the Incredibles remains my favorite Pixar outing.

  • Kathy42591

As much as I love everything Pixar has done, and I have 100% faith in them. This is where they start going down hill.

    • Juan

Totally agree. Its kinda sad that they are going down this road. They haven’t failed yet so keep going! I’m more inclined to believe that this is more Disney pulling the trigger than the Pixar heads

      • Stevex

That’s surprising, since the Pixar heads (Steve Jobs and John Lasseter) pretty much run Disney now. There are so many really creative people at Pixar, they shouldn’t take the easy way out and do sequels.

  • Joe

    What about A Bug’s Life??

    • Derrick

I believe that a few of the original voice actors died, so that may be the reason they haven’t done a sequel…

    • Nathan

Please no, can’t stand Dave Foley.

    • mary q contrary

Also, I consider this one of their weaker films. I think A Bug’s Life, Cars, and Ratatouille are the ones that I could take or leave. Not that I didn’t enjoy A Bug’s Life and Ratatouille….. they just weren’t my cup of tea. Cars was just plain crap.

      • Skip182

Cars wasn’t just plain crap, it was crap with double toppings.

      • yeah

i would only see a monsters inc sequel mayyyybe even an incredibles sequel. but everything else shouldve been one and done (besides toy story) cars 2 is coming out in 2011 and i think t will be a huge mistake by pixar

  • katie

I think that Incredibles need to have the sequel for the UNDERMINERS.. John Ratzenburger can reprise his role

  • jason

i mean come on the incredibles is just screaming for a sequel! monsters inc may be the most creative story Pixar has done, i thought they tied up the story pretty well, which left little room to expound on later. although i don’t doubt that it would be great! my other worry is that pixar is running low on ideas with all this talk of sequels lately. we shall see

  • Mike Wazowski!!

Yay for Monsters, Inc.!! The Incredibles should definetly be next on the list.

    • Sue1

      i agree completely.

  • Britt

I think if they are going to do a sequel to Monsters Inc. they could either make a rival laughter factory that steals Boo’s door or set up a situation where humans trap a group of monsters in the human world (monsters escape and they need an older Boo to help get them back)

    • Sundevilsarah

Although I loved the sequels to many Pixar movies, I want to make a list of movies they cannot touch because of the way it would ruin the overall message- Ratatouille, Finding Nemo, UP, and Wall-E. I agree that they were amazing stories and the film’s impact would be diminished.

However, I can see how other Pixar films demand a sequel. The Incredibles had plenty of other themes to explore in a new film.

      • Josh

Finding Nemo, WALL-E and UP and a few of my favorite Pixar movies and I agree that the message of those heartfelt movies would deminish if there were sequels and though Toy Story 3 is my most anticipated movie this summer, I do not want a sequel for those others.

  • Grant

The Incredibles for sure!!! I would die the day they announce a sequel for the incredibles! How’s this for the title of the sequel, “Too Incredible” haha just a thought ;)

    • jackkie

that’s a horrible idea for a title. why do people offer creative suggestions on things they know nothing about?

      • Maureen

Maybe you didn’t read the part where he said, “Just a thought.”

    • marnie

The incredibles for sure. Ive been dying for a sequel.

    • marnie

      luv the “Too Incredible”!

      • Levi

        I don’t

  • Elizabeth

I’m so excited for Monsters Inc 2. I really liked the ending but always wondered what Sulley’s reaction meant. Some time had passed, so I always wondered if maybe Boo was older or something. That could be a possible storyline, what happens with the kids no longer being afraid and them growing up…I dunno.
But I also agree “The Incredibles” could definitely handle a sequel.

    • Paloma

But the end of the movie switched the power from kids being scared to kids laughing, so I think a sequel would go in a completely different direction than energy production.

  • bshgdb

I could have sworn I heard that they were working on a sequel to The Incredibles years ago. Was that just a rumor. If I had my choice, it would be The Incredibles.

  • Brody

Honestly, I don’t want any sequels at all. The new world a Pixar film takes us to is half the fun. I’m already bummed out that this year’s new Pixar film is Toy Story 3 (the first one was great, but this franchise doesn’t really need a 3rd installment, we have the pathos of the first 2 films and this will probably be a bunch of jokes that will look lame after the awesomely mature Rataouille, Wall-E, and Up). And to find out Monsters Inc. and Cars–by far the worst two Pixar films–are getting sequels instead of new Pixar worlds is just depressing.

    • Chip

The new Pixar movies are less suited for sequels than Monsters Inc. or even Cars, if you ask me. And I think that a Toy Story 3 is perfectly legit, especially considering that it takes place 10 years after Toy Story 2. If Andy was still a child, there would be no point. It’s my most anticipated film of the year by a country mile.

    • Matthew Thomas

Cars was pretty bad but Monsters Inc is one of their best and most heartfelt movies. I personally didn’t want a sequel but it’s by no means Pixar’s worst film.

  • colin

I’d imagine/hope that Up/Monsters, Inc. director Pete Docter returns to direct Monsters 2 since he’s finished Up.

    • Matthew Thomas

Nope its confirmed he’s working on another movie for Pixar whose details or plot has been kept under wraps. So its most probably gonna be one of their short film directors or co-directors of feature length movies.

  • Dan

Prep & Landing is the one that needs a “sequel”…well, not so much of a sequel as a full-length version. That was amazing. Definitely wanted more than a half-hour with commercials.

    • Mr. Needlemouse

What is this “Prep and Landing” of which you speak?

  • AntonioSaucedo

    I need me more Jack-Jack!
