'Community' recap: Drunk with chicken power

Community-PoultryImage Credit: Harper Smith/NBCIf this recap were last night’s episode of Community, words would be chicken fingers. And since I’m making the words, I’d be making the decisions. I’d be like Abed. Make sense? If you didn’t watch last night, probably not. But play along.

A shortage in the cafeteria’s coveted chicken fingers forced the gang to rethink their approach to obtaining the fried wonders. Rather than racing to the dining hall when the clock struck lunch, they found a better approach: infiltration. But before they could plant Abed on the inside, they get current fry cook Star-Burns (who is playing favorites when it comes to chicken distribution) fired.

Abed’s highly entertaining Goodfellas-esque voice-over told the story of the group abusing its newfound power, trading fingers for favors. Pierce got an entourage, Troy got a monkey (named Annie’s Boobs), Shirley got the attention of her dreadlocked mancake, Annie got a free fancy backpack, and Britta got British hairdresser. I don’t have to tell you that the house came crashing down.

Now, I don’t have fried chicken parts, but I have 10 funny lines/exchanges from last night. So let’s sit on a table across from each other a la Sixteen Candles and eat up:

Troy: I think I’m failing psychopharmacology.
Britta: Why are you taking that?
Troy: I thought it was a class about crazy farm animals.

“If God were edible – not that I’m Catholic – but if it was cool to eat God, he’d be a chicken finger.” — Troy

“I gotta stop hanging out with her. She sounds like a chicken finger.” — Troy

“His dreadlocks remind me of the Predator, which is weird because you’re doing the actual hunting, and you seem invisible to him.” — Abed

Jeff: Why do you have a monkey?
Troy: It’s an animal that looks like a dude. Why don’t I have 10 of them?

“Please rename that thing, and this time not with a contest on Twitter.” — Annie, to Troy re: Annie’s Boobs (…the monkey)

“…For your information, I don’t have an ego. My Facebook photo is a landscape.” — Jeff

“Can we make this quick? I have to give a banana to Annie’s Boobs.” — Troy

“I caught him stuffing my man full of chicken, and Tyler Perry has a whole series of movies about why that’s wrong.” — Shirley

“He released Annie’s Boobs. Annie’s Boobs could be anywhere.” — Troy

Now, tell me what your favorite lines/moments were from last night, PopWatchers! If you do, you’re streets ahead. If not, well, you’re streets behind.

I loved Troy’s response to Annie’s complaint about the monkey’s name: “It’s his twitter account. he can do what he wants” and the reference to the Godfather with Troy shutting the door on Jeff (as the Diane Keaton character) as the rest of the group gathers around Abed.

Favorite line of the night: “it’s an animal that looks like a dude. Why don’t I have ten of them?”

I loved the first ‘pause scene/narration’ Goodfellas reference so I got a little worried that they were going to overdo it, but it worked and was hilariously perfect. My favorite line was by far Abed shouting, “Chicken ruuuuun”!

I’m streets ahead cuz I was in this episode. I’m in the cafeteria throughout in the background. But I’m a vegan so it kinda sucked to see how many fingers were used and discarded. Oh, well.

    • Via

You’re a vegan? Ugh.. you’re so streets behind.

      • Elle

I wasn’t advocating veganism. How am I streets behind just because I believe in something you don’t? There’s such a thing as individuality. Why can’t we all just be ourselves? And not be judged? I didn’t say anything about meat except that they wasted a lot of the fingers on set. I mean they used like 12 bags. Whole bags. But all you got from my comment is that my being a vegan makes me something less than you. Whatever. I feel okay with my life decisions and wish the same for everyone. Thank you very much. And that makes me streets ahead.

      • Jeff

Overreacting to someone’s obvious joke puts you streets behind.

      • Via

My Gawd! It.was.a.joke. Pierce would be happy to know that his catch phrase is taking off so well that people are taking its use to heart. Your reaction is a “shocker”…really.

    • shelby

Haha, and you just proved to be Vegan Stereotype # 1 – Humorless.

  • LOL

If I had Annie’s Boobs I’d never leave the house.

    • CP

      I love Annie’s Boobs!

  • Toni (@ImStillToni)

I loved the references to Goodfellas and Sixteen Candles (RIP John Hughes)! Abed walking down the hallway into the chicken distribution ring with the background music, Britta working the chicken in her bra cuz she’s a vegan just like Deb Mazar worked the coke, the candlelight table top, Pierce wanting a guy named Travis for his entourage, Abed & Troy’s reversible escalator…I could go on and on. Community has definitely found it’s stride and I am loving it! Not college rule? I’d throw it away too, who uses that crap lmaoooo

  • Anne

The best episode (right up there with the Halloween episode)! Loved every movie reference, background music, fast banter minute of it.

  • Elana

Such a clever show. One of the few that makes me laugh out loud. Brilliant pop culture references. Lets just hope it doesnt get cancelled.

    • april

It’s already been renewed, along with all the others in the NBC Thursday comedy line-up. Whoo hoo!

  • AliMic

Troy: I dressed like a crazy pharoah for you!

  • LoveMeSomeTV

“Not Hal Holbrook” had me cackling with glee for a good hour. The writers are brilliant. Easily the best comedy on TV.

What amazes me about “Community” (and “Modern Family” and “Cougar Town”) is how they arrived fully formed. Not just smart and funny but completely their own. Remember how long it took “Seinfeld” to find itself? “The Office” started this trend, though it wasn’t until Season 2 when it really started going. The three I mentioned were brilliant in their own ways from the very start. I am in awe. I’m not sure if any will ever attain the “sitcom as art” quality of “The Office” but I am so always impressed.

    • JLC

Same thing with Parks & Rec. It was lucky to survive its first season, but now it’s one of the funniest things on TV. I really missed it last night. (Though I was able to get my fix from my DVR – the episode with the Venezuelan sister city.)

      • Diggity

I have that one saved on my DVR too! Love Parks and Rec!

      • fritanga

To me, P&R is still “finding its feet” in that I still find it completely unfunny. I wish NBC would pair Community with 30 Rock, which would be beneficial to them both (as evidenced last night). I find myself switching over to anything else the minute P&R (and the Office, for that matter – it isn’t what it once was) starts.

Last night’s Community was epic, though – Abed even sounded a little like Ray Liotta. Hee.

  • JLC

I also liked the Earth Day commercial of Joel McHale frolicking with the person it the Earth suit.

    • pop

me too! i liked his little booty shaking dance. what i don’t like is how his makeup always makes him look orange.

      • Via

Ditto about the love of that booty shake and the dislike of the orange makeup. NBC or whomever is determined to make him the posterboy for hunky b/c they spray tan him within an inch of his life and I’ve even noticed how the camera will slyly shoot around the back of his head to hide his small bald patch. He looks just as hot and way less primped on The Soup. Ah, I was so happy to see his beard the other week lol.. now that Community shooting has stopped.

  • Mandy

This and Modern Family are the best new comedies! Troy’s one liners are the best…Annie’s boobs! Love it!

  • Diggity

This was the best episode yet- I thought the Goodfellas theme was brill. Abed is so weird and hilarious.

  • Aprilcot26

I loved last night’s episode! Every reference was fantastic; it made me want to go watch ‘Goodfellas’ again.

  • BobWork

This episode nailed the Good Fella’s vibe. The Sixteen Candles moment was fun, but my favorite reference was the scene with Abed becoming the new leader…that great door-closing shot taken directly from Coppola at the end of the Godfather. I love this show.

  • Mike O

This was Community’s best episode yet! I loved the Goodfellows and Godfather references. Brillant!
