Tori Spelling to host talk show: Who should her co-host be?

tori-spellingImage Credit: John M. Heller/Getty ImagesIs Donna Martin set to be the next Oprah? The LA Times is reporting that ABC is developing a daytime talk show for Tori Spelling, best known for her role as the virginal Martin on the sudsy classic Beverly Hills, 90210 and current star (along with husband Dean McDermott) of Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood. The show will feature Spelling and a yet-to-be-cast male co-host, and have a “Will & Grace vibe.”

The most important question is, who should be her co-host? It could go a couple of ways: The show could cast someone who is already part of her life, or hire someone she’s not familiar with — either another actor or comic, or a complete unknown. I’m against the idea of it being Dean; I like him enough, and it’s fun to watch him interact with Tori on their show, but a little independence never hurt anyone. If you watch Tori & Dean, you know she’s got tons of colorful characters surrounding her, including “the guncles” (gay uncles) and a sassy, longtime best friend. One of them might work, but you always risk alienating the audience if the co-hosts have too many inside jokes or feel like, for the sake of their friendship, they can’t be totally honest with each other.

I think the best bet would be bringing on an established performer. Look for some of my ideas after the jump (and then share yours!): If producers want a Will & Grace vibe, could there be a better choice than Sean Hayes? (Viewers will have to be able to reconcile that he is, in fact, not Jack McFarland, though.) On the other hand, fans still mourning the loss of Ugly Betty might enjoy watching the crazily charismatic Michael Urie. Sex and the City’s Mario Cantone, always a hoot on The View, would be fun, and we certainly know he wouldn’t be afraid to go toe-to-toe with Tori.

Or, producers could completely capitalize on this and turn the search into a reality show, airing on Logo. I, for one, would love to see it somehow combined with RuPaul’s Drag Race. (Better that than Paris Hilton’s My New BFF, right?) Oh, maybe RuPaul could be the co-host! The possibilities are endless…

So, PopWatchers, who do you want to see as Spelling’s co-host? Are you planning on watching her talk show?

Mario Cantone and Johnny Weir are out b/c she needs a gay who isn’t too mean. She’s got such low self esteem that by week 4 she’d be anorexic again and week 13 she’d have committed suicide. Ross Matthews seems innocuous enough but those 2 are big enough to bring ratings alone. Come to think of it, just 86 the whole thing. It’ll never work.

I disagree. The most important question is, are they going to cancel One Life to Live for this nonsense?
