I found myself unexpectedly chuckling as I sat here watching the set of four just-released Saturday Night Live promos highlighting Gabourey Sidibe’s hosting gig this coming weekend. Before seeing them, I was questioning Sidibe taking the starring role on the comedy show: Is she a big enough star? Is there enough fodder for the writers? Heck, is she funny enough?
But with these promos — which you can watch below — I feel like at least the last question is cleared up, as Sidibe deftly joked around with cast member Andy Samberg, imploring him to take off his pants at one turn. Enjoy here:
What do you think of Sidibe as a comedian? Has she got the stuff to pull of Saturday night’s task? Are you planning to watch? Sound off in the comments.

She is very funny, so real and charming
There is no question that she’s got the stuff. Watch any talk show or red carpet appearance to see that she has a natural gift for comedy. The real question is whether SNL can put together worthy skits for her. They’ve been mediocre at best in recent weeks.
I can’t stop staring at those arms. I’m sorry, they’re distracting.
She was sooo funny on Jimmy Kimmel. I bet she will be great if they give her good skits.
For an EW reporter, you’re pretty clueless. She has been hilarious and charming on all the talk shows when she was promoting Precious. Good thing SNL at least were watching her as you weren’t.
Agree completely with Kevin. I haven’t seen Precious yet, but pretty much every single time I’ve seen Sidibe, whether on a talk show, the Oscars, or whatever, she’s clearly demonstrated an aptitude for comedy. This is pretty much a non-question, Tanner.
She was witty and funny in interviews while promoting Precious. I’m interested in seeing her do comedy on SNL.
Laura Linney reported that when Sidibe auditioned for “The Big C,” everyone was blown away by her “comedic timing” and her overall skills and versatility.
If the writers give her good material (unfortunately, far from a sure thing on today’s “SNL”), she should do just fine. In fact, she jsut might be a revelation to the doubters.
She will forever have to prove herself because of her size and that is so sad. Screw the Oscar nomination for Best Actress for her first foray into acting. I think she is a breath of fresh air in the otherwise stale and boring world of Hollywood. And for the first time in a long time, I’ll be tuned in to watch her…..or at least my DVR will.
It doesn’t really matter if she can do funny or not because SNL hasn’t been funny in years.
Her appearance on the soup was pretty funny too.
I forgot about The Soup episode. She was a hoot.
I still like the clip played by “The Soup” where Mario Lopez told her she looked pretty and without missing a beat, she replied “Thank you! Genetics!”
I can’t wait to watch Gabby on SNL! Hopefully she will bring the funny that SNL needs. Every talk show and red carpet event that I’ve seen her on has been halarious! My DVR will definetly be set for SNL…and that’s saying alot!!
am I the only one that can’t find the link/video?
Anna –
No, I’ve got the same problem. There’s a big blank space where the video (or the link) should be. Anyone out there know how to fix this?
No, definitely not. The one time I actually want to see a video EW has posted, and it disappeared.
Same!! Anyone know where I could find the video somewhere else? youtube?
This girl is going to have diabetes any day now. Can’t really see her living a healthy life with a good career at that weight. Put her on The Biggest Loser
Howard Stern was right about this fat pig. Her 15 minutes are almost up.
Please go away until you’ve washed your mouth out with soap.
Dude first of all it takes one to know one. What matters more how she looks or whether she’s good at doing her job?
*sigh*
When was the last time a fat MALE actor got all of this unsolicited advice about his health? How much did Jackie Gleason and Orson Welles (both of whom lived into their 70s and enjoyed varied and scucessful acting careers) weigh?
How much did Biggie Smalls weigh? He actually used his obesity as his calling card — his name was obviously a pun on his body size. But he was a man; he could get away with it.
This so-called “concern” about Sidibe’s health represents nothing more than thinly-disguised (if you’ll pardon the expression) gender bias.
Exactly. And I would add to your list Jonah Hill, Horatio Sanz, Jorge Garcia, Chris Farley, Dom DeLuise… Nobody ever says anything about those guys’ weight. Total. Double. Standard.
I’m more concerned about Jonah Hill’s health than Gabby’s… I have a sense that he doesn’t have a very clean lifestyle.
And it is a total double standard, as Jenna from ’30 Rock’ said “If I can’t be Monique fat, I have to be Teri Hatcher thin. Either way, your laughing!”
They can always do a sumo wrestler skit, no make up or body suits required.
Heh — that’d certainly destroy the stereotype that “fat” people can’t be physically active or agile, now wouldn’t it?
Hey, why not? Do an update of Belushi’s classic “Samurai” routine. Get a scraggly-haired, hook-nosed extra to play Howard Stern and let Gabby come in ther and do a “Sumo” routine and stomp his a$$ into a pulp. I’m sure she could do it, and it’d be funnier’n hell!
I loved Gabby on The Soup! She was so funny. I wonder if she’s going to do a Biggie Smalls type thing on SNL
