Jay Leno on Conan O'Brien's move to TBS: 'I knew he'd land on his feet.' Does this mean their feud is over?

Jay-Leno-ConanImage Credit: NBC(2)It’s been three months since the late-night hoopla had legions of TV watchers siphoning themselves off into Team Coco and Team Leno. And now, with Jay Leno back at his old Tonight Show post and Conan O’Brien headed to TBS for his new show, Leno tells Access Hollywood: “I knew he’d land on his feet…I think he’ll be great. He’s a very funny guy.”

Okay, so does this mean the feud is officially over? Is everything just water under the bridge now? I think Leno truly meant well, even if his comments sound a little like something a high school teacher says about a former failing student who suddenly gets a job at a grocery store. And then there’s this strange, somewhat indecipherable comment Leno made to Access while discussing Conan’s move from network to cable: “I didn’t know what to think. I mean, well, FOX [a network Conan was considering] is a network but they have cable too, so, you know, it’s all sort of the same now. Everybody sort of reaches the same thing, but I think it’s exciting. I think he’ll do well.”

The ratings war will be on soon — what with Conan and Jon Stewart airing at 11 p.m., and Leno and Dave Letterman airing at 11:35 p.m. — so perhaps the REAL feud has yet to begin. As Leno himself said, “It’ll be fun. Everybody will compete. Eleven o’clock is now the most exciting place to be.”

What do you think of Leno’s comments? How will the ratings shake out once Conan starts up on TBS?

I don’t think Leno and Conan ever really had bad blood. It was all NBC’s fault for the whole mess. They prematurely inked the deal with Conan to take over the Tonight Show years before and then just made seriously bad business decisions from there on out.

I agree I’m a big fan of Conan and didn’t agree with what Jay did but most of this mess was created by NBC and most of it was their fault.

YOU SIR ARE A FOOL. Clearly Jay is a sister of the Dark concealing herself to look like a fat Italian man and has cast a spell over you – It was all Jay’s fault and NBC as well. ONLY THE TRUE SEEKER can see past the lies.

Jay is such a jerk. This isn’t just about Conan, it’s also about all the people Conan had with him. Jay screwed them all.

Is the Jay/Dave feud over? No! Will it ever really be over? No! The main reason: it’s comedy gold! It’s much more fun this way. Yes, they both will make millions and probably hold no real animosity. But you gotta milk it.

I think Jay should finally learn to keep his mouth shut about this. Hasn’t he learned that he looks like the bad guy in all of this? He should shut up about Conan and concentrate on his own show.

Leno is a condescending douche. Feck you Leno!

      • Dede

        Well said!

  • What?

Time for the Jay bashers to come out again, I suspect. Is the war over? Yeah, probably. Because the ratings Conan will get will be small enough that he’s a non-issue to Jay/Dave/Nightline. Conan will get his niche and TBS will be happy.

Get ‘em on the horn: lets get the Middle East fixed!

Ahh, the sweet smell of a vicotry dance. Where’s you Orange Savior now, Team CoCo? I hear Duluth is lovely this time of year.

    • Lay Jeno?

      who is this moron?

      • Lay Jeno

Yes, name calling is the way the Allied Forces prevailed in WWII. Name calling helped the North win.

So let me get this straight grandpa. You are comparing a late night TV disagreement to World War II and the Civil War? Ooooooook, looks like someone didnt take there meds.

  • KC

Feud? What feud? The media made it into a feud. Leno acted the spoiled brat and O’Brien graciously walked.

  • Dave

Aaaaaaaaaaaaand cue the Conan nuts with all the Jay bashing!

No, my feud with Leno is not over. Yeah, it’s nice that Leno is so “gracious” about Conan’s cable nighttime show. Does everyone get TBS? No. Does everyone get NBC? Yes. Sorry, it’s not like getting the hosting gig of the Tonight Show back. But then Leno’s the only one in history to give it up and get it back. Lucky Carson didn’t do it to him, or Jack Paar to Carson or Steve Allen to Paar. Steve Allen had a great career after leaving the Tonight Show. Why couldn’t Leno figure it out like Allen did? Or just retire like Carson?
No, my feud with him is not over.

Hey Jay, I’m pretty sure everyone in the universe knew Conan would land on his feet, and it’s not really breaking news that he’s “a very funny guy.”

  • Sexyred

Kate, your comment about jay leno sounding like a former teacher is hilarious!

I really don’t know what to think about jay leno, other than he is sooo dreadfully boring.

  • Navi Sitara

i’m not really one for bashing others, but leno deserves it. he’s a complete mediocrity, who shouldn’t even be on tv, let alone the tonight show.

“is their feud over?” is this a joke? leno has nothing to be upset about. guy signed a contract and then changed his mind five years later, screwing over hundreds of people who lost jobs and now because he says something nice the feud is over? maybe there will be reconciliation when conan says something nice about jay, but until then there is clearly no evidence of forgiveness
