'24' recap: Et tu, Madame President?

24-Kiefer-9-10_320.jpg Image Credit: FoxAllison Taylor, you truly vex me. Wasn’t it just a few hours ago that you excoriated Rob Weiss and General Brucker for wanting to submit to Samir’s demands by saying something presidential like “the worst will happen, we’ll deal with it. Because that’s what we do. Americans don’t stay down, we rise up together in times of crisis, we carry on, is that clear?”  So where was that can-do attitude when it came to the Russians, eh woman?

Logan can quote Caesar all he wants but it still didn’t make a dang bit of sense that Taylor would want to continue with the peace agreement while knowing the Russkies had zero intention of walking the talk. And really, Allison, you don’t think Dalia would want to be clued in on the fact that Moscow had a hand in Fantastic Sam’s death? Sheesh, I haven’t seen such a strange series of knuckle-headed moves since — well, since last week, when the Russian sniper missed Jack but managed to lodge a bullet into this season’s most undeserving victim. (And boy did that get you folks worked up! I especially appreciated this post from Nihilistic: “I know 24 has always been infamous for featuring the most quixotic and unrealistic gunfights on television but that took the cake.”)

Ah, we whine because we care, right? If it wasn’t for Taylor’s out-of-character call, we wouldn’t have been treated to Bauer’s desperate act of sedition by commandeering a helicopter. But more on that later.

I failed to acknowledge Kiefer’s excellent bedside manner last week, so I was glad to be given another opportunity to single it out tonight: I got a little misty watching him stare solemnly at Renee’s corpse and felt particularly saddened when he was treated to that cruel reality check by the nurse. “Are you the husband of the deceased? Do you know her next of kin? Are they alive?” Didn’t know her so well, did you Jack? Who cares — someone has to pay now!

After discarding his bloody togs for an intern’s shirt and boots (really?), Bauer raced off to Federal Court to question soon-to-be-squirreled-away Sergei. Instinctively — and perhaps a little too conveniently – Sergei asked for a few minutes from the judge so he could enjoy a little alone time with Jack. Our hero didn’t mince his words, either: Jack threatened to murder Sergei’s wife and kids unless he revealed who was behind Renee’s surprise death. But we already knew the answer to that, didn’t we? Elsewhere in New York, Logan told Novakovich to spare him the platitudes and start talking world peace with the U.S., or else Logan would expose the “unvarnished truth” of how the Russians were behind the plot to kill Hassan. I had a couple of thoughts swirling about my noggin during this al fresco meet-and-greet: one, how blown away I was by Gregory Itzin’s purty blue peepers. And two, how in the heck would a disgraced ex-prexy like Logan come into such privileged, double-secret information? I’m sure this is where Reed Diamond’s character comes in; he did seem to have some suspicious “sources” who saw Jack talking to Sergei at the court house, so Logan’s “administrative assistant” is probably in deep with the Russkies. But I still spent most of this scene wondering how a loser like Logan who should be completely out of the action knew so much about the terrorists.

Of course, Logan’s threat worked. Major kudos to Itzin here; the actor was in rare form in that limo ride, looking so pathetically full of himself as he uttered lines like “It’s a good feeling, being of service to your country.” Naturally, Ethan was buying none of it back at the U.N. Already angry with Taylor for not knowing Logan’s M.O., Ethan was all the more suspicious when Logan explained how he simply appealed to Novakovich’s sense of morality. Fortunately, Logan wasn’t able to keep his secret for long. Thanks to Sergei, Jack learned that Dana Walsh was the main contact for the Russians — which led to a pretty delicious de-briefing back at CTU. Remarkably, Dana emerged fairly unscathed after that nasty beating (she shoulda gone cold after Jack smacked her head into the table) – mostly because she needed to remain lucid to beg for immunity. She had the audio files to prove who the real baddo was, but Jack would never get the chance to hear them; Logan was already working behind the scenes to cut out our hero once and for all.

At first, Taylor was floored by revelation; she thought maybe Logan dangled a sex or money scandal in front of Novakovich to get him to come back to the table. But… Moscow?  Behind the murder? And yet remarkably, Logan worked his skeevy magic on Taylor and talked about her ”working for the greater good.” Next thing we know Taylor is down at CTU, crushing Jack’s world in Chloe’s new office (it doesn’t belong to Hastings anymore, Chloe, so quit calling it that!) ”I want justice!” Jack says. “I want peace!” Taylor retorts!

What can you do? The ‘ol girl always gets the last word. Still, I remain so very vexed (for more on this matter, see paragraph two).

Looking defeated, Jack is led out to a helicopter that’s supposed to whisk him off the front lines — but in an last minute attempt to avenge Renee’s death, he pulls a gun and goes freaking airborne, man. “Land that chopper now!” Chloe yells. No chance of that, even with the Air Force on his tail.

Taylor aside, it was a kinda awesome ending, didn’t you think?

  • Reed

So anyone have an idea where Jack Bauer is heading in that helicopter?

    • GROWING PAINS FAN

He is going home to watch the latest LEGEND OF THE SEEKER episode, and who can blame him? He is on the edge of his seat as Richard Cypher, Kahlan Amnell, and Zeddicus Zu’l Zorander fight the Keeper. GREAT TELEVISION.

      • Rock Golf

T, for someone who has no interest in watching the news at present you sure seem to make a lot of comments trolling for that website. Maybe you should watch more news.

      • miss k

        Lame.

    • joblo

Hopefully to pick up Tony Almeda and Agent Aaron. He needs some quality backup, now that Chloe has to be all responsible and stuff.

      • Alex

I’m wondering how they’ll squeeze in Aaron, he is after all the only character other than Jack to appear in all 7 seasons.

      • RK

It would be hilarious if he is just walking down a NYC sidewalk…

      • Kat

Great idea to go pick up Tony because I know Jack will save the day. . . [where IS Tony, BTW?] And totally agree, Lynette. I count on President Taylor to take the high moral ground so what she did made NO sense to me. How could she possibly press on and bring Dalia to a “peace” table with the very government that assassinated her husband?! Wouldn’t Prez. Taylor want to know WHO in the Russian government tried to blow up Manhattan? She would actually overlook all that for a peace treaty that would be a sham in any case? No, something’s not right with President Taylor that she would listen to that sleaze bucket, Logan, over Ethan’s sound advice?!?!? To cut Jack loose, who she knows is a hero? The only thing I agree with her on is not giving Dana immunity. I kinda’ hoped Dana would bite the bullet last night.

      • um…

people keep asking “where is Tony”…he is in jail isn’t he? He turned out to be a bad-ish guy…so obviously he would be in jail…

      • ksoze

I think President Taylor is going to have a change of heart.

    • AA

Yeah, I’m wondering that too. Maybe his apartment has a helipad and he wants to put on his own clothes?

      • Bauerette

Hopefully this time he’ll keep the blinds closed! LOL

    • skz

Yes, Iam sure he is going to win this.Pres.Taylor is making a big bo-bo not doing what Jack wants to do.Off with her head

    • born yesterday

He is going to the bathroom

    • Elizabeth

Probably already been answered, but I think he’s going to the UN to clue Dalia in on who killed her husband, figuring that she will then back out of the deal and he’ll get to go back and “interrogate” Dana/Jenny

    • mw2833

Is it coincidence that the name Mikhail Novakovich is very close to Mike Novak from previous seasons?

      • ksoze

        Hahaha!! Good catch!

    • maz

to thank the person at the hospital who gave him a pair of shoes to wear to the courthouse …

  • Johnification

I gotta say, Taylor’s reversal notwithstanding, I thought this was a great hour. Itzin is a remarkable actor, and I’ve been waiting for two scenes for Cherry Jones to get a scene like the one she share with Itzin and Bob Gunton tonight. So I bought that the oily salesman Logan was able to peddle his wares to a desperate, suddenly impressionable President.

Also, the ending! Jack and Chloe for the first time are against in each other, and it’s breaking my heart! At the same time I couldn’t believe that in five seasons together they’ve never been opposed on anything, and suddenly, there she was, pleading with him on the roof. Broke. My heart.

    • Johnification

*Two SEASONS. Been waiting for two SEASONS.

      • GROWING PAINS FAN

Wait no longer, watch LEGEND OF THE SEEKER now!!!!!!!!!

      • joblo

Dude, shut it. I will purposely never watch Legend of the Seeker because of your stupid spamming. Jack Bauer deserves respect!

      • thorsten

Well, GPF is right. Seeker is better written and executed, even a still dressed Darken Rahl hanging out with the keeper in the underworld makes more sense than anything Braga and Coto can come up with…

      • Jordan

Taylors reversal? How about friggin Jacks? an hour ago he was telling General Brucker’s elite team that they were traitors. “I only take orders from the President of the United States.” He flipped just as fast as she did. Just because someone died.

      • ksoze

To GPF and thorsten – please go start your own blog if you like that show so much.

    • joblo

Yeah, seeing Chloe have to oppose Jack was really a startling change. Putting her in charge of CTU like this was a fantastic move on the part of the writers and I’m sure we’re only seeing the beginnings of what they’re going to do with there.

      • Ajay C

I read that the unique situation between Chloe and Jack will build up and climax in the final two episodes. I fear that Chloe will die.

      • Mary

She can’t die! She NEEDS to be in the movie!

      • Ajay C.

        @ Mary

I agree with you 100%…but someone once said that “every single cast member revolves around Jack Bauer. And no matter how important they maybe, they can die at any time”. The person who said this was James Morrison (Bill Buchanan) after his final shoot during season 7

      • Mary

@Ajay C. Yeah, I know ::sigh:: I just feel more connected to the series when they keep recurring characters around, especially ones that have been in many seasons.

      • big guy

ajay, did you say jack and chloe were going to build up and climax?
didn’t he already do that with renee?

      • Ajay C

        @ Big guy..

That’s exactly what I said. The situation being that Chloe and Jack are on opposite sides now…perv

    • Hope

did you guys see the tear slipping down her cheek at the end? So sad to see them on different sides now :(

    • Lily

Agree about Chloe and Jack on opposite sides now. But remember, Chloe told the shooters not to fire on Jack as his helicopter took off. I’m thinking Chloe will help Jack anyway at great risk to herself and her job! Staying tuned. It sure was a great 24 last night.

      • CP

Yeah, Chloe would rather help Jack than help her job. She’s not a job-person, she’s a do-whats-right person. And Jack is always right. :)

    • Melinda

Yeah, well, that job means nothing to her – she was just brought back in last season, right? She’ll turn coat on them in a hot second.

      • Lily

Hope so Melinda and CP. I really hope Chloe says the heck with CTU and helps Jack, and in the end, they save the day and even President Taylor who incredibly abandoned our Jack. I still can’t believe she did that.

      • Bauerette

I’m inclined to agree with you there. She cares too much for Jack to turn him over for a temporary job situation.

    • Mark

Heavy is te head that wears the crown. Unfortunately Chloe has to act responsibly in her leadership role even though she knows as usual Jack is right and if in her normal role would be behind the scenes helping him. Those tears and her facial expression did break my heart.
Lynette: As usual great review. I was hoping Jack would come up with a better appeal. Hopefully Ethan will. Taylor seemed to be first Pres who completely trusted Jack. Even palmer did not in season 3 and ordered that commandeered helicopter with jack and Ramon Salazar to be shot down. But Taylor appears to have lost her morale compass.

  • Mel

If the season doesn’t end with Jack dropkicking Taylor off a roof and then pointing to Ethan and saying “You’re in command now, chief” then I will be disappointed.

    • thin

      I’d pay to see that.

      • ksoze

Don’t give up on Taylor yet…I think she’ll turn it around. I hope so, anyway.

    • Kellan

I found it hard to believe that the same woman who sent her own daughter to jail for murder, is now throwing out her personal integrity for a peace agreement that probably won’t hold up anyway! Hassan was killed by the Russians – they obviously didn’t want the peace agreement! Logan knew all her buttons to push, but I’m quite vexed that she isn’t seeing the bigger picture in this. Once Dahlia finds out that the Russians killed Hassan, Taylor knew about it, and went ahead with the treaty anyway, her “historical” peace deal will fall apart. The legacy of her Presidency will be failure and subterfuge.

      • Bauerette

Yeah, that seemed very out of character for her usual do-the -right-thing -at -any- cost approach. Maybe Logan said something else to her we didn’t see(Itzen is amazing in this role, BTW). I just find it hard to believe she is ignoring the advice of trusted Ethan to listen to someone the entire counrty knows is a scumbag.

      • sabrina W

i was thinking the same thing she screwed her daughter, her son, her husband and marriage because of her steel morals and suddenly she turns on everything she stand for pfff!! jack aint no better i’d love to see him go to jail and be in the same cell as tony, what are u gonna tell him now jack, now that ur in the same boat huh?

  • Ernie

I never noticed how blue Itzin’s eyes were either! I’m about to pop in a season 5 DVD to see if they changed.

    • Ajay C

It was great to see how paranoid Logan has become after season 5. The dirty look that was given to him by the agent set him off…lolol

      • Kat

Logan is SUCH a sleaze. YUK YUK YUK. CanNOT believe President Taylor gave him a nanosecond of her time OR that she took HIS advice over Ethan’s.

      • Hope

say hello to President I.M. Weasel :) Yeah that scene with the two presidents and Ethan was classic 24. Talk about the snake slithering his into the garden of Eden. Logan is the Devil and Ethan’s an angel. Totally wicked.

    • Melinda

Yeah, I loved that little exchange.

    • ksoze

He is soooooooooo good in that role. I see at least two Emmy noms – Itzin and Sutherland.

      • Ajay C.

        @ Ksoze

I do see 24 receiving several nominations.

        K. Sutherland – Best male actor in a drama miniseries
        A. Kapoor – Best male supporting actor in a drama or miniseries
        C. Jones – Best female supporting actor
        24 – Best drama

      • Allison

Good call on Kapoor. I would personally rather see him nominated than Itzin, but Itzin has a while to change my mind.

  • thorsten

I heard the rest of the season is about Jack trying to find out who lost the next gen iPhone in Redwood City…

    • clay

      Haha. Good one.

  • Dan

Gotta say, this is one of the best episodes of 24, if not the best, this year. No stupid, senseless twists. Actual story and character development. The first time that Jack is betrayed by his country directly, right in his face, when he didn’t expect it to happen. Something unfamiliar to him. But, of course, Jack ain’t nobody’s bitch. Not even the president’s. This episode gave us some new developments, which might have been a lot subtler than the usual twists, but which, nonetheless, were just as important.

  • jtmontclair

All the 50-plus fans of Homicide are now in high gear to see Reed Diamond start doin’ his thing. Yep, I agree, Logan will die at the hands of Jack.

    • Comicus

      Can CTU borrow Vic Mackey?

    • michael

Nice! Let’s get Jack and Det. Pembleton in “the box” with Dana!

    • tnsmoke

Reed was awesome on Homicide, making his once likeable Detective Kellerman almost like Jack Bauer. He’s an under appreciated actor. Hope he’s on all the remaining episodes.

    • aurora

ha ha homicide was watched by many people. it was and is a great show. i agree reed diamond is a good actor. wouldn’t be great if could land on another show after 24 is over with. also where’s aaron? he has to be on the last season. maybe jack will call him for some information on president sleaze.

  • brian

gregory itzin is among the most interesting character 24 has produced. His year as the president was so machiavellian and shakespearean that it elevated 24 into classical tragedy. His scene with the russian tongith was deliciously delightful..those eyes, that smug grin, that condesceding tone in his voice..luv it.

oh, and was it just me, or did dana walsh look more like she had a head cold than a head beating after jack busted her up?

    • elizabeth3613431

What is Logan’s motivation for all of this? I can’t help but think he’s behind Dana Walsh’s placement at CTU. He got into bed with the Russians once before so that he could save the world and look great–why not think he’d do it again? In his twisted logic, he might think that he can salvage his reputation by saving the peace treaty.

  • Sam B

Madame President always so weak woman! She wasn’t very good power for President.

Whoo-hoo! Way to go Jack! Take russians and Logan are going down what they did to Renee.

Charles Logan are not best of villains. But Mandy may best assassin I was hoping she will know how to escape from prison to hunt to Jack for payback.

    • C

      Do you speak English?

    • Ajay C

Sounds like one of the Russians from 24

    • Tom

You know, there are a lot of posters here who do not speak English as their first language – cut them some slack.

      • MB

        Exactly.

  • Comicus

I won’t say there weren’t some lulls along the way…but jeez…24′s going out with a bang. Beat season in a long time. Jack (& Jackie Jr.), I miss you already.

  • Comicus

    er…BEST season….not beat season.

  • 365-24-7

Chloe is finding out things look a whole lot different from the top.

    • Bauerette

Funny- the same thought crossed my mind when she said she had to report the commandeered helicoptor. It’s not so easy when you’re the one in charge to say “forget the rules”, even if you know it’s the right thing to do. I still like her in charge of CTU!

    • JBL

To be a Tear is to see in a new way.

      • Doremifah Solatido

So is having your head stuck so far up your a$$ that you have to peer out of your navel.

  • ronrodent

I’ve been trying to think of how the final scene of this series should play out, and I think I’ve got it. After all the action is finished, and there are just a few seconds left on the ticking clock, Jack says to whoever’s listening, “There’s something I’ve been waiting to do for years.” The camera zooms in on his face, and he smiles — as he then walks through the restroom door.

    • mlb

Too funny! I’ve been saying that from the beginning – don’t these people ever eat or go to the bathroom?

      • Karen

Don’t forget though. Jack actually had time for sex this season. We never “saw” that before. Maybe he peed when he was done?

      • Cindy S.

He did tell Renee he was really thirsty after they had sex, too. If it goes in, it’s gotta come out eventually, right?

      • John

And remember, we don’t know what they are doing during the commercial breaks. Maybe that’s when they sneak a quick bite and head to the bathroom.

      • fenderjazz

I want their cell phone batteries. It seems they last for at least 24 hours.

      • Mary

Not when there’s a crisis unfolding, lol!

      • t3hdow

        To fenderjazz:
Remember, the CTU agents were issued new phones after the EMP blast, and that was after half a day. I’m sure most phones can last a day, assuming they’re not used on a non-stop basis (which seems to be the case for most reasonable people).

      • TMB

        Horniness reigns over bodily functions.

You know the old saying: nookie before cookie!

    • John

And says “I’ll be in here for the next twenty-four hours”.

  • Kevin

Such is the seductive nature of evil, and Charles Logan is evil. Taylor has been nothing but virtuous until Logan appeared like “a snake in the garden” – to use the words of Brian Hastings.
Much like Sherry Palmer seductively destroyed David Palmer, so will Charles Logan destroy Allison Taylor.
Yet another example of the real-life tragedy that is 24.

    • Hope

I like your anology (sp?) very good thinking Kevin.

  • Justin

While I am as vexed as you are, Lynette, I still loved this hour of 24, mainly because of the ending. Way to go, Jack! Someone has to think straight. No offense to Chloe, of course, she’s just doing her job. It hurts me to see them on opposite sides, but that’s the way its gonna have to play out. I can’t believe Taylor actually took the advice of that rotten SOB Logan, and keeping Dalia Hassan in the dark about Hassan’s murder?! LUDICROUS!!! By the way, the Fantastic Sam thing has to stop, it sounds ridiculous. I’m telling you right now, I would rather take justice over peace. What kind of peace could exist with a backstabbing delegation?! NONE! Pretty simple solution to me. Good call, Ethan. I knew you wouldn’t let me down. Oh, by the way, loved the interrogation between Jack and Dana. SO SATISFYING!

    • Ajay C

Lynette Rice is an idiot. Rather than providing serious recaps, she spends her time trying to figure out what pet names she can give these characters……so pathetic
