This Week on Stage: Elvis lives...on Broadway

million_dollar_quartetImage Credit: Joan MarcusWe’re heading into the final stretch before the April 30 cut-off for Tony Award eligibility, but this week’s only opening is the jukebox musical Million Dollar Quartet, based on a real-life jam session in 1956 with Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis. EW’s Clark Collis gives the show a B-, noting, “One can’t help wondering if the City of Sin would also be a better venue for this lightweight show.”

Meanwhile, producers announced plans to bring South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker’s first stage musical, The Book of Mormon, to Broadway next March. Robert Lopez, who co-created Avenue Q, assisted on the duo on the book, music, and lyrics. With the Phantom sequel and the Spider-Man musical already in the works, next season is looking to be very interesting indeed.

don’t forget next season we also have the broadway transfers of YANK, and THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS, both of which will likely garner tony noms for new musical…. so that only leaves two spots open……..

    • tom

I caught Yank and scottsboro boys and they were both outstanding. I think Scottsboro boys is going to run away with the tony next year if it transfers to a bigger stage well. My guess is that the phantom sequel doesn’t even get a nomination for new musical. Maybe just “original score” or “best actress” for Sierra Boggess. I have a feeling Spidey will never make it to the opening night it just seems plagued……

I saw Million Dollar Quartet and thought it was a lot of fun. But the girl steals the show from everyone… that is kind of a bad thing when the show is called MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET. but the girl character was outstanding.

  • Great to hear jim

Jim – Great to hear that Elizabeth Stanley (Dyanne, I think in the show) steals the show from the guys. Not a surprise at all, coming from someone who worked with her at local theatre in Quincy, IL. She is a wonderful talent and I hope she can find a vehicle that is challenging enough for her. So far, she has had some nice “new” shows like this one (and CryBaby) and she has also headlined some touring theatre. Glad you enjoyed. Can’t wait to see this show when I am in NY in June. It was only in preview stage when I was there in March, so I look forward to it!
