'Project Runway' recap: Mod to the Max versus Cuckoo Chanel

Last night, we learned who would be competing at Bryant Park in the third slot. Notice I said competing, not showing. A deliberate choice of words that I alone seem to be capable of making. To wit: At the top of the hour, before she sent the four finalists back home with 9 grand in their pockets and at least 10 grand worth of big dreams in their heads, Heidi said to Jay and Mila, “Only one of you will be showing at Fashion Week.” False, Frau Klum, false! As the world now knows, 10 designers showed at Bryant Park, including Jay, but only three competed for the season seven crown. The bald-faced lie inaccurate phrasing started last week and irked me all throughout tonight’s episode, as every single person who referenced the Jay vs. Mila showdown followed suit. The sleight-of-tongue might not have bothered me so much if I didn’t get the sense that all the Runway players had been instructed to do so by shadowy producers desperate to cover up the fact that they’d already diminished the importance of showing at Bryant Park by parading 10 collections, most of them utterly forgettable, up and down the catwalk in February. I mean, for cripes’ sake, Janeane got to show there!

Okay. Now that I’ve vented a little, let’s get on to the rest of the episode, which turned out to be pretty damn entertaining, if only because we got to see how much everyone’s hair grows in four months. Oh, healthy follicles! Bonus points to Heidi for a double presto-change-o: longer hair and a newly flat, post-baby tummy.

Dressed in a leather jacket and black turtleneck worthy of Bullit, Tim began his round of home visits chez Seth Aaron in Washington state, where the guy already had 15 looks ready to rocket. 15 looks! When he only needed 10! And his goal was to take 20 to New York! Dude works at a frenetically prolific pace. Tim was taken aback by the sheer volume of his output and expressed approval for a number of pieces. But then he busted out the honesty: SA could not win with this collection because it lacked surprise and he needed to “re-conceptualize the whole thing.” Ouch. SA looked deeply humbled. Close to tears, even. That kind of cold-shower advice is hard on the ego, not to mention the wallet: He’d already spent half his money. But by the time Tim played Pictionary with SA’s wife and kids (“Fallopian tube!”) and we got to see pictures of the erstwhile “boy next door” with blond hair and a shaved head, the designer seemed to have recovered. And oh, dear Tim Gunn. On the trampoline. “Papa Gunn’s on the tramp!”

Next up was Emilio in New York. Tim met Emilio’s brothers Nicolas and Felipe, who talked about how tough it was growing up in the Bronx in the ’70s and ’80s. I’m sure it was. But the grainy, stock footage of the South Bronx that the show’s producers pulled out of who knows what drawer (a shelved Lifetime M.O.W. about a woman who can’t stop disco-dancing on the 4 train, even though her life’s been threatened?) made me laugh out loud it was so ham-fisted. Check it out! People of color walking in bell-bottoms! Is that graffiti in the background? Ooh, a subway!

Back in Emilio’s studio came the shocker of the season (yeah right): tension flared up between the two men. Tim was nonplussed by the pieces Emilio was showing him, including, naturally, another self-glorifying monogram print. Then he laid eyes on that “spray-paint brocade” monstrosity, which seemed to set off his gag reflex. As usual, Emilio dismissed Tim’s suggestions, arguing he’d made a “strong showing” throughout the competition. Tim pushed back, warning him that that did not guarantee him a warm embrace in the finals and that his collection, such as it was, skewed old and lacked sophistication. And ech… those vomitous colors. Olive velour? What?! The reality check didn’t sit well with Mr. Sosa: “I’m designing a collection for women. As far as I know, Tim doesn’t wear women’s clothing.” Uh, probably not (funny as that image may be), but he did, you know, run the design program at Parsons for, like, ever. The quarreling continued back and forth, back and forth until Tim had no choice but to give up. “You do whatever you want to do,” he said, handing the hideous epaulet-ed jacket back to its self-satisfied maker. “You just do it.” Of course later, when the designers had all reunited on the eve of Fashion Week, Emilio pulled a typical acknowledge-Tim-Gunn’s-wisdom-without-acknowledging-it when he said, “The collection that Tim will see at Bryant Park is not the collection he saw hanging on the racks.” Emilio, dude, your ego trips are exhausting.

In rainy Los Angeles, Tim discovered just how seriously Mila takes her mod philosophy. Her décor is black and white. Her boyfriend wore black and white. Her dog, Ziggy, is a black-and-white Dalmatian! Lady is hardcore! When she commits to an aesthetic, she commits! Overall, Tim seemed to dig Mama Mod’s collection, though he did warn her it was bordering on “matronly.” What?! That shocked me, I have to say. I’ll be the first to recognize that Mila’s had some massive misfires this season, but she’s rarely, if ever, been guilty of making the couture equivalent of grannie panties. And from my vantage point last night (i.e. my couch, wedged between my cats), her collection looked pretty freakin’ fabulous. If the “matronly” assessment upset Mila, it didn’t derail her determination. “I don’t want to lose to that little f—ing kid,” she said in what I’m guessing was a reference to Jay and not her way of telling us she’d also tried out for the relaunch of American Junior. “I’m a better designer and he’s annoying.” So that’s that. Oh, and to file in the rain-is-wet folder: Mila also had a Goth period.

Finally, Tim made his way to Jay in San Francisco, an apparently frigid place that requires Jay to bundle up even indoors. Jay claimed his inspiration was the Japanese samurai, but I have a feeling he made that up in the time it took him to hear Tim ring the doorbell and then walk to answer it. Samurai? In this collection? Huh? “Where is this person going?” asked an equally perplexed Tim, gazing at Jay’s black, floor-length coat. Jay’s answer? “Nowhere.” Terrific! Sir Gunn then busted out the classic “Qu’est-ce que c’est?” while eyeballing those loopy loop-sleeves on Jay’s otherwise pretty kimono jacket. In Tim’s assessment, the collection was gimmicky, student-like. Not a good thing. But it didn’t throw Jay off — certainly not enough for him to even consider the possibility that Lady Mod would beat him. “I don’t have to worry about Mila,” he said with a condescending laugh. “I know I’m going to beat her, so it’s fine.” Whether or not that kind of puffed up confidence is genuine or an on-camera fabrication, it didn’t win him any points with me. Lucky for him, he’s got adorable parents and the gift of quick-witted retorts. When Tim told him his collection was “a little cuckoo,” Jay responded, “It’s Cuckoo Chanel, girl.” Win.

Eventually, when everyone congregated back in New York, and Jay and Mila had the requisite (sort of) bitter rivals face-off in the hotel room (echoes of Irina and Althea!), it was time for the competitors to quit the subtly named “Bluefly workspace” and head for the runway. For me, there wasn’t much of a contest. As I’ve probably stated too many times already in these parts, I am a sucker for chic, ’60s influenced fashion. So Mila’s three pieces, I dig ’em, ya dig? Especially the stunning black-and-white striped coat/dress of look No. 2. No, I wasn’t wild about the boxy overcoat that a made-up-to-look-like-Mila Brandise sported in look No. 1, but the dress underneath was compelling. And look No. 3, a mod disco dress made of shimmering sequins, was a refreshing change from the usual stuff we see from the gal. No color-blocking required!

As for Jay, other than the extremely (!) mini dress from look No. 1, I didn’t much care for any of it, frankly. While his tailoring is beyond reproach, I just don’t get his heavily doodad-ed vision. The second look was a flop. The pants were nothing more than a retread of at least two other pairs of trousers he’s made this season. And that silver top? With the intergalactic spaceship bolero? Hellz no. I didn’t find anything to applaud in third look, either — not the overworked coat with the fluffy-bunny butt-and-hip detailing, not the red pants, and certainly not those indulgent gladiatorial shin guards that Agent Orange cheered with such passion. Ungapatchka for reelz, people.

Speaking of Michael Kors, judging by what we saw on screen, the guy needed some serious convincing to get on Mila’s side with Nina and especially Heidi. But whatever reservations he may have had about Mila being too “straightforwardly retro” went the way of his epidermis in the tanning booth and the Holy Trinity chose her as the winner of the coveted third spot. That left poor Jay to dry his tears in his Cuckoo Chanel. He surely wept and wept and wept…until he jerked his head up in a moment of epiphany and said, “Hey guys! I just realized that I too get to show at Bryant Park and none of this means anything!”

Now that we have our top three, what do you think? Did Mila deserve to edge out Jay? Is Seth Aaron gonna pull out all the stops and triumph over Emilio (and his ego)? Did you like any of the looks from last night? Were you as fascinated by the follicular action goin’ on as I was? So bold of Brandise to buck the growing-out trend and get a trim, right?

Be sure to check back here later today for my exit interview with Jay.

I think next season, we should get to see the whole line between the two designers battling for the last spot. There may have been an item in the other seven looks that could’ve swung the momentum. And I don’t think that it would have that big of an affect on the final runway show either.

    • model citizen

“It’s Cuckoo Chanel, girl.” Funniest. Line. Ever!!!

    • Mo

Seriously. I liked Jay’s looks until I got a look at the rest of the collection. Those see-through pants would have had Kors breaking out the thesaurus for “insane crotch” synonims.

      • mary q contrary

I agree. His collection was off. But nobody’s still competing was as bad as Emilio’s. Bleck.

      • elr

To Mary q contrary: Yeah I agree Emilio’s line is fugly. I think I like Seth Aaron’s the best.

      • harley quinn

Nope. Jay’s collection, minus the see through pants, would have been the winner.

    • RCB

I think Jay should have gotten the 3rd spot.

      • Z

I agree with you. Jay should have gotten the 3rd spot because his collection would have been a surprise to see. We know what Mila is going to do!!

    • Carpe

Having seen all the collections — readily available on-line — can say definitively that Jay did not show his strongest pieces last night. Just wish if you rooted hard enough, your favorite would come up with the best designs. Also, how obvious can you get. Sweet little Jay got amped as an arrogant bitch and Mila’s treatment was softened. Might as well have had winner flashing over her head. But Jay’s collection was way better than Emilio’s, and that’s the bigger bummer.

  • model citizen

Emilio downplays Tim’s advice by saying as far as he knows Tim Gunn doesn’t wear womens clothing. So does Emilio wear women’s clothing, is that why he “knows so much more” than Tim Gunn??????

    • Chris

      LOL, good question!

    • Sookie

I was thinking the same thing, but I think Emilio’s ego is just so big that he thinks he knows what a woman wants to wear.

    • KT

hahahahahaha… good question! someone should ask that in an interview and see how he reacts…

    • seattleellen

I agree and for heaven’s sake Tim Gunn is now with Liz Claiborne’s company so I think he has a better idea than Emilio with what women wear. I do not want Emilio to win-he is far too smug. I hope Seth Aaron wins!

  • Al

The fact that Tim doesn’t like Emilio says it all for me. How could you ever be full of yourself when you made that washer bikini monstrosity? SA for the win!

    • janemk

Yes, Seth for the win! Great work through the season.

      • wakeforce

Yeah! Seth Aaron FTW, because I really can’t stand the other two.

    • michelle

Remember, Daniel thought he had this in the bag since he had won so many challenges! Tim tried to tell him uck but he couldn’t believe Tim wasn’t “piddling in his panties” over his collection and Chloe was the winner! Go SA!

      • also Jennifer

Too bad that Daniel didn’t listen, ’cause Chloe’s collection looked like big poufy shiny 80s prom dresses. Heck, if Santino had fitted his gowns better, he would’ve won the whole bloody thing.

      • Mark in FL

Santino should have won that season and Daniel has always been overrated IMO.

      • Madd

Yes, Santino definitely deserved to win that season, if only Heidi weren’t so obsessed with how “the boobs were never where they were supposed to be”.

      • Matt H

After that loon Jay in Season 1, Santino had no chance of winning Season 2. Tim has as much said so, that had the two winners in the first two seasons been Jay and Santino, the show would have been looked at as Project Freakshow. So, Santino was the best of the three that year, but from a political production standpoint, he unfortunately couldn’t win.

      • RyRyNYC

I never get tired of talking about Daniel. It was my sophomore year at FIT and my friend was friends with Daniel (he was an RA in my building freshman year.) He wasn’t allowed to get work til AFTER the finally (do not know if they still have that rule) so he was working for Res Life at FIT while the show was on the air. I remember how smug he was BEFORE fashion week on campus and aloof to all his school friends – after fashion week he was depressed and moapy. LOL… we knew he hadn’t won due to his change of attitude. He was way too cocky going into fashion week – But he was definitely one of the more talented contestants on any of the seasons.

      • peggym

Nick should have won that season, especially since the most praised that was praised in any collection was the one Nick made for Daniel.

      • peggym

“the most praised piece in any collection”. Sorry

    • Carrie Mae

When Tim walked into the hotel room he gave everyone a big hug except for Emilio. They shook hands.

      • wtfnyc

I noticed that, too, Carrie Mae. Me, on my couch: “Oooooh — BURN!!!”

      • Brenda Barrett

I also noticed it and it was my favorite moment of the show; it Tim doesn’t like you, you must be a real arse.

      • Brenda Barrett

        *if* Tim doesn’t like you…

      • Jenn67

I totally noticed that, too! Emilio looked a little taken aback as well but I LOVED it! Take that Emilio and your ginormous ego! HA!

      • seattleellen

I noticed that as well. Tim gave his really big hugs to Seth Aaron and Jay & the European kiss to Mila.Even tho I have liked Mila’s mod designs-I found myself rooting for Jay when he said he wanted to pay his parents back and those boots or whatever he called them were great. Again out of the 3 finalists- I want Seth Aaron to win!

      • JD

Could be wrong, but it looked like Emilio was the one who put his hand out first, fending off a hug from Tim.

      • BruceMpls

If you want Tim’s take on Emilo, read his blog at mylifetime.com. He is pretty straight forward about his dislike of Emilio. He starts up with his visit to Emiio’s and carrys on with Seth’s visit where he says something like he would like to see everyone wins but adds: (well, almost everyone…) Not too hard to figure out who he meant.

      • SarahFlower

        I noticed that too!

    • Ines

Tim pointedly did not hug Emilio at the apartment after hugging everyone else. Awesome!

      • Ines

Oops, this posted under the wrong entry…and before I saw the above comment.

      • anne

It’s refreshing to me that Tim and Emilio didn’t see the need to pretend that they are friendly.

I personally find Mila’s smugness and her overconfidence in her dated, limited color palette more annoying than Emilio’s bravado.

    • RaRa

My respect for Tim just grows and grows with each season. What a classy guy, to always be so respectful and polite to a guy who disses you at every turn!

      • Madd

Exactly- he was even polite to Kenley (sp) in season five!

      • erin

Teachers have to learn how to do that. It’s a definite skill.

    • R3

I hope someone will bring that up next week in the “reunion” show!

      • R3

Sorry, that posted under the totally wrong comment. I was referring to Emilio’s over-confidence in the light of his washer/string bikini.

    • Joy

Over the past 2 seasons at least, everytime Tim told a designer to change his/her design – they got sent home. They started rushing to “fix” their designs to meet Tim’s standards and the result was a flop.

    • Karen

Did anyone else notice that Tim hugged and kissed everyone and only shoot Emilio’s hand? Says a lot.

      • Theresa

Tim would have hugged Emilio had Emilio let him. At least, that’s Tim’s version on his Facebook episode recap.

    • La la la

The thing that pisses me off the most about Emilio, besides his constant ego trips, is the fact that the main reason he wasn’t sent home with that horrible pink bikini was because he straight up lied to the judges faces! He told them he wanted to do something different from the other contestants and set himself apart by designing a bikini, but in reality he had fully planned on making a dress but simply ran out of material. And he got to stay because the judges applauded him for “thinking outside the box” like that. Gross. I fully hope Seth Aaron takes it all the way!

  • Daniel

I thought that the judges got it wrong last night. I think Jay’s line will be much more interesting. Mila will have the same outfit coming out 10 times in a row.

    • jones

Agreed. I was especially disappointed to see Nina and Michael cave into Heidi. I just do not get why she likes Mila’s looks so much.

      • Here & there

Remember, what Anthony said. Heidi has an ear piece to hear what the producers what her to say.

      • RaRa

to Here & there – Good point.
The producers seem to get the final decision. Why don’t they just put the producers in the judges’ seats?

      • Carl

Heidi is also one of the executive producers of the show. So..,there you go.

    • Tina

Agreed, I really like Jay intricate details. I’m sick on Mila’s black and white mod. It’s not fresh or current IMO.

      • D

The models were wearing b & w on MOTR. Guess it is current.

    • Kay

They haven’t gotten a whole lot right this season–apparently 3 judges don’t determine the winner, Heidi does–and seriously, sometimes Heidi’s “taste is questionable”. Can not abide Mila’s boring as **** clothes or Emilio’s ginormous ego. Seth Aaron for the win!

      • i know art

So many times this season I thought: I know who’s going home. And then that person wins and they absolutely rave about the design. From Emilio’s hidesous E-Heart-SA print to Mila’s mismatch black and white jackets that made her skinny models look huge, they’ve just gotten it wrong so many times.

      • Kathy

LOVED the way both Seth Aaron and Mila said that the challenge win they both thought the judges got wrong was Emilio’s print win. SLAM!

      • lloyd apploff

some of the crap Heidi wears is breathtakingly bad………..

      • Owen

Dudes. You have to know that Mila is Tim Gunn’s favorite as well…not just Heidi.

      • Terri

@Owen, I don’t think Tim’ opinion plays into their final decisions, ever. Otherwise, no way Emilio would have won so many challenges. I think Nina is the judge with the most influence, not Heidi.

      • Abby

Owen, you have to know being one of Tim’s favorites is no ticket to success. The judges baffle him on a regular basis.

      • Mo

I hated Mila’s collection. Jay’s was much more fabulous. And given that the runway is not really know for its “ready to wear” aesthetic, I thought his line was right up that alley. Mila is boring, boring, boring. And her clothes were matronly as hell…cannot stand it. SA for the win. No.questions.asked!

  • kay

In some alternate universe, I wish Project Runway would see Anthony’s Bryant Park collection, admit their mistake, and declare him the winner. Le sigh.

    • Deidra

Yes!!! I saw the pics of Anthony’s collection and WOW, it was gorgeous. Tailoring, taste level, innovation…it was all there. He put the Final 3′s collections to shame.

    • cf

When I saw his beautiful collection, I said “why didn’t he do this on the show?”

    • the real wendy

Anthony’s show was so great!! Loved the litle black dress with the swirlies!! They should show that on TV somehow!!!!

  • kim

having all 10 designers show just nullifies so much of the season. Of course the prize for winning helps out alot, but the big prize is showing an entire collection. in the future we can have contestants sending crap down the runway for the majority of the season w/ full knowledge that, hey I am gonna get to show anyway, who cares what this one challenge looks like. grrr…. go seth aaron!

    • Brigid

in the past, it’s only been about 5 designers, it all depends on how many episodes the show has had when fashion week happens.

Last year, with the whole Lifetime/Bravo dramz, only 3 designers showed, but blindly.

      • Bibi

For which we are all eternally grateful.

    • Melissa

I think Heidi’s pregnancy was why so many showed this year. They truly need to start this show so that the ending is truly at Bryant Park. Not 2 months after.

    • Shannon

Thank you for bringing that up! I’ve wondered the same thing for several seasons now. If all the designers talk about is “getting to Bryant Park,” like it’s the prize, then why even choose a winner at all?

  • justjack

    I want Mila’s dress! (look #3) Stunning.

    • JenR

Really? I thought the model showed it terribly. She was holding her neck at a really weird angle standing with her on the runway and looked like the choker neckline was pulling her down like a yoke on an ox.

      • Kathy

I agree…I kept wondering why she was standing so oddly. She looked all hunched over!

      • BP

And the yoke was crooked. It was wierd.

      • Ali

Did anyone notice that Mila’s two models were both from that show “Make Me a Supermodel” that aired on Bravo a couple of years back? Holly and Shannon were their names. Holly won that show and yet she can’t stand up straight to show that dress properly. WTH!

      • JBW

I thought the same thing while the model was standing on stage with Mila. I couldn’t understand why she was standing like that, or it was the dress.

      • Jenn67

Apparently she graduated from the “Miley Cyrus School of Slouch.”

      • D

I noticed the crookedness and wondered if it was the dress or the model. Hard to believe it would be the model.

      • Frightening

I stopped tivo to point out the weird way the model was standing to my husband. It reminded me of horror movies like “The Ring”; not a good association.

    • RaRa

For me it was just “meh”. The fabric was all sequins, which to me is a little on the trashy side. And the yoke/neck was not very innovative, IMO. The cut of the dress didn’t do much for her boobs or figure. It didn’t look like it took a lot of time or skill to make.

    • Bruklyngirl

Beyonce wore a similar dress in her video “Get Me Bodied”

  • Pam

Missy, do you know if there was any feedback from the judges for the designers that “showed” at Bryant Park not “competed”. Of all the collections I’ve viewed so far (of the eliminated contestants) Anthony’s is my favorite. I was a fan of Jonathan’s throughout the competition, but not his runway collection.

    • Laura Elizabeth

I would really like to know that too. I thought Anthony’s was the best as well.

  • Mel

I think Jay’s collection overall was much better than Mila’s. Perhaps he picked the wrong items to show?
Since Jay is no longer in it I have to root for Seth Aaron, even though he’s so similar to former winner Jeffrey. I love his coats and think he was one of the nicest, most genuine people all season.

    • BLB

Hm – I thought Jeffrey’s stuff was really trashy. I didn’t get it. SA’s is, to me, a classier version of that.

      • LTC

I agree totally. I don’t really remember the show from Jeffrey’s season, but Jeffrey’s clothes were ugly. SA has the same esthetic but his clothes are some of the most beautifully made items they have had on the show. In the beginning I didn’t care too much for his work (I think it was a holdover from Jeffrey) but he has won me over.

    • Brenda

I loved Seth Aaron’s coats too! Every look they showed at his home I loved, although I agreed with Tim that he needed to punch it up in order to win. Still, that silver long coat they showed the most was to die for.

    • CoCo Chenille

I agree about Jay. I didn’t like what he presented today, but overall, I loved his work and Mila’s just left me with a bland feeling.

  • Shauny

You already knew there wouldn’t be an all male finale. There is no way that Mila’s colorblocking ass should be in the finals. She was medium/bottom throughout the season. The fact that the writer of this column seems to love Mila’s taste says a lot about her lack of style.

    • wkrp

And perhaps your hate of Mila’s taste “says alot about “your” lack of style.” It’s all subjective and everyone is entitled to their opinion, “taste” and “style”. That’s why there are so many choices.

    • Owen

Again, Tim Gunn, our hero of fashion, clearly preferred Mila. So lay off Missy.

  • Brigid

    Random thoughts:
    1) I too was perplexed by Mila and Jay crying about how much they wanted to show at Bryant Park. Okay, you did, stop crying.
    2) Emilio needs to get smacked upside the head big time.
    3) Did Mila’s boyfriend make anyone elses gaydar go off a bit?

    • Mark in FL

Yes, Mila’s boyfriend set my gaydar to red alert. Poor Mila, her boyfriend is going to come out of the closet soon.

      • Kathy

And I’m sure he’ll be wearing Mila’s color-blocking ugly ass dress when he does!!

      • Laura Elizabeth

And it probably won’t be out of Mila’s closet!

      • RyRyNYC

lol… Most of you idiots could probably do with some color blocking. Its one of the more flattering methods of evening proportions. I liked Mila’s aesthetic… I like retro inspired collections – but I’m partial to all things mid-century modern (furniture, movies, clothing, NYC… hahaha.)

    • Elli

Mila’s boyfriend may not be the most butch, but maybe he’s just metrosexual. She did look very pretty last night – either well-rested or a blast of Botox.

      • haleysname

When she is milin se can be really pretty, when se isn’t (most of the timie) she looks old. She should eally smile more. That said, i really hope she doesn’t win.

      • D

They worked them like dogs during the regular season. I think we were seeing the effects of some good nights of rest on Mila.

    • BeeCee

OMG! That’s the first thing that popped into my head when I saw him. And my gaydar is killer.

      • Judi

If anything, other than birth and genetics, could cause a man to elect to go the ‘gay way’ it would be dating that cold, egotistical, sterile witch, Mila.

  • MomC

There was no contest for me. Both designers are somewhat derivative in their designs. However, with Jay, I always feel like I have seen this kind of fashion elsewhere and better. With Mila, I have seen it elsewhere too. However want to see what she does next and want to own it too!

I heard that Emilio chokes big with his collection. Chokes to the same level that Michael did back in season three. I am not a fan of Emilio the person, but he has sent some amazing designs down the runway, and I want a good final competition.

    • Brett

Agreed. With the exception of that overly-hyped brown sequined dress and that awful bikini, I’ve loved many of his designs. Don’t like him at all.

    • cf

Emilio’s collection is awful. I don’t like him, but I was looking forward to seeing what he would design.

  • Teresa

I wasn’t particularly fond of Mila’s clothes and am not looking forward to seeing an entire collection of color-blocked black and white coming down a runway. One of the coats looked like something I could buy at Burlington Coat Factory. I think SA will be outstanding and I can’t stand Emilio’s ego. I hope SA wins!

    • jones

Totally agree with everything you said. Emilo’s interactions with Tim remind me of Kenley.

    • also Jennifer

I liked a lot of what Emilio did during the season (was fast-forwarding through the show before work this morning & didn’t see his collection), but like Seth Aaron’s personality better. So I’m torn – I hope SA’s collection wins me over so that I can root for him wholeheartedly. And I’ll have to go back & look at their incomplete collections before the final, just to compare.

  • Sylvia

    1. Did anybody notice the cold greeting between Tim & Emilio @ the Westin? 2. I thought Jay’s collection, if over the top, was more interesting than Mila’s. I didn’t like her clothes – they were so boxy.

    • Alix

I know I did! I think you gotta be pretty nasty for Tim Gunn not to like you…

      • anne

While I love Tim Gunn, he’s human, and the fact that he doesn’t like Emilio means that he doesn’t like Emilio. Period.

    • Zazazing

Tim Gunn is the nicest man on the planet and for Emilio to diss him like that paints a poor picture of Emelio. You don’t have to take Tim’s advice, but you should at least listen respectfully. After all, the man is an industry icon and his taste and experience is unquestionable.

      • Kiwi

I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who is fed up with the outright disrespectful attitudes of both Emilio and Anthony toward Tim. He may not be a “designer” but he obviously has the career he wanted and is damned brilliant at what he does. He has been a true mentor for so many(just reading some of the warm and gracious interviews he has done over the years is where I have built my opinion of him from). Tim has a very good “eye” the way Clive Davis has a very good “ear”. I’m always amazed at the balls some people have when it comes to their over inflated egos. AND how many people can’t seem to take CONSTRUCTIVE criticism. I stopped liking Anthony, the MOMENT he was so ugly about Tim and my gut reaction to Emilio has been…”yeah, and just WHO are you that you are 43 and still have no name?!?!?!” Seth Aaron, same age group but takes the criticism as what it is, constructive, something to learn and build from. Not something to attack and dismiss.

Mila’s clothes seemed to be wearable by most women and not just teenagers.

  • Mc Prophet

Did anyone else find Seth’s (no Aaron, just Seth) home life to be a little….weird? 1) He’s 37 so clearly he popped those kids out relatively young. 2) How is it that he went from a blonde, somewhat “edgy” kid to the tragic Hot Topic refugee he is today? And 3) Did anyone else feel sorry for those kids? Seth’s wife seemed pretty normal but I for one would die if my dad showed up at a PTA meeting with JoBro hair that masked a bald spot, and a neck tat the size of a coaster. Sad times, Seth, sad times….

    • Victoria

What difference does it make how he dresses or what size his neck is…the point of your comment would be that he showed up at the PTA meeting! Don’t judge a book by it’s cover.

      • Bibi

I think it’s funny he lives in Vancouver, WA. Hardly a grand metropolis.

    • Bobby’s Robot

I didn’t find it weird or sad. They seem like a nice family.

    • polly

It’s not like his kids were 20 years old! The oldest one looked about 13…that would have made Seth Aaron 24 when they had him. I wouldn’t call that relatively young to have children. Plus, he seems like a wonderful dad who loves his family and is tremendously talented so who cares what he looks like?

      • Kathy

I’m not a fashion of his design aesthetic, but SA seems like a really nice guy and I loved his family, and their interactions with Tim. Mc Prophet, you sound like quite the hater (and believe me, I am NOT one who likes neck tatoos), but SA appears to be a great guy. Back off! Also, you are right on the money Victoria…what’s important is that he WOULD attend the PTA meeting, because if you’re gonna have kids you have to be involved!

      • Kathy

Sorry, I meant I’m not a FAN of his design…thinking faster than I type.

    • Mystic

I live in the Portland/Vancouver area. The way Seth looks and dresses is not out the norm for this area and for his age. His design aesthetic is great and I would wear anyone of his jackets.

    • kaydevo

I thought SA had a nice family. What are you talking about? I live in a city with many artists and a huge music community, and even if I didn’t, I hardly think SA’s appearance is particularly comment-worthy, much less something to be ridiculed. You are aware this is a show about ARTISTS, right?

    • Katja

I thought his home life looked great. So what if he dresses different from a “regular” dad – I would think that a lot of kids might think him really cool. His family looked really nice, the fact that they wanted to play Pictionary with Tim is adorable and provided my favorite moment of the show (when Tim guessed Fallopian tubes), and they have a nice little suburban house with a yard. His neck tattoo and baldness or not are really not a big deal, nor is the fact that he might have had kids young – he’s still married and in his kids’ lives, right? I LOVE that he doesn’t live in NYC or LA and he’s done well enough to get on the show and be so close to winning (and I hope he does!). If he wins, I think he might be my favorite PR winner they’ve had; I like his attitude and design aesthetic better than I liked Christian Siriano’s (sorry, just my opinion). He seems like a really nice guy with a great family. And I hope he grinds Emilio into the dust at Fashion Week. :)

      • BLB

I know it’s sacrilege, but I thought Christian Siriano did the same Pirates of the Caribbean outfit over and over again. I was really disappointed he won and have never been as into the show since.

      • D

My favorite moments were with Jay’s parents. They seem SO nice. Jay seems a little bi*chy by comparison. Maybe it was just a poor edit.

    • laylagalise

What?! Were you watching the same show I was? I didn’t get that vibe at all! I saw a happy, healthy family who liked spending time together. Seth Aaron might like black hair and black wear, but I don’t see why that makes him any different than say Mila (who also likes black hair and black wear) or thousands of other people.

    • Laura Elizabeth

The kids at my son’s school would think he was pretty cool!

    • Poppycock

Yaaaaawn. Seth Aaron bashing is sooo last month.
