In her interview with Jay Leno last night, Kate Gosselin seemed to sort of grasp what “The Kate Effect” on Dancing With the Stars‘ American Idol-slaying ratings this season is all about: “They’re probably just tuning in to see if I’ll fall,” she quipped. “But that’s still part of the effect, it all counts!” Jay said, having been the victim of quite a fall himself in recent times.
But it wasn’t all “Ain’t it funny how much people hate us?” between these two last night. Leno tried to ask about the custody battle Kate is currently facing with ex-husband Jon, but she wouldn’t go there. Leno, never one to rock the boat unnecessarily, then came to her defense. “It seems to me most single moms work at least eight to 10 hours a day, which is what you’re doing…so I don’t quite get this.” he said. Poor Kate, the “author, TV person, dancer,” responded, “When work comes my way I do it so I can literally put food on the table and send my kids to school.” They also talked about toasters. For, like, a full minute and a half.
Katey G’s run on DWTS epitomizes what’s amazing about her celebrity. She has no discernible talent. No achievements to speak of, save for Jon & Kate Plus Eight, which ended when her marriage did. And she attracts vehement hostility and hatred from TV viewers – not just the derision and, let’s face it, sometimes jealous anger that the vapid, young, beautiful Paris Hiltons attract, but a genuine off-putting dislike. And yet, she carries on week after week, talk show after talk show. She told Jay that she gets really warm responses from the live Dancing audiences, and more than once expressed gratitude to the “Everyone” who keeps voting to keep her on. But who is actually picking up their phone to keep her on? Yes, we relish seeing her on our TVs as this woman we love to hate. But she is reviled. Who votes for her? Seriously, do you?

Garry: He’s watched by people between the ages of 35 and 60 who have no real sense of humor and are comfortable with lame jokes because it’s more “family” friendly. Conan actually didn’t get fired either. I assume Jay had been making jokes about Kate before she came on, and then he ends up kissing her ass? What a tool!

I bet if they find some of the old footage of the Leno show it will show Jay talking about the couple. If he was out to fish for answers.to his lame questions best thing to do is bait the hook. Instead of throwing an empty hook out in the water or was it practice casting? Time for Jay to find new fishing buddies.

Gee, I don’t watch Leno, but I’m really depressed to find out that since I’m 58 years old I have no sense of humor. Dave’s obviously right, it’s a good thing guys like Conan can show me what’s funny, I’ve actually thought all these years that Jack Benny, Johnny Carson, Rodney Dangerfield, etc. were funny, now I see they were just talentless hacks that an old person like myself couldn’t see through.

I looked on Amazon for a 6 slice toaster. It took five seconds, less than the amount of time you complained abotu not being able to find one.
I don’t understand why they keep putting her on shows. Most people I know don’t LOVE to HATE her. I just don’t care for her from what I’ve read and I think I might have seen her on the View. Otherwise, I’ve never seen her show, never seen an episode of Dancing with the Stars. She doesn’t seem particularly interesting or attractive, so why are the casting directors shoving her down our throats?
Sorry but I don’t understand, and have never understood, the people who have so much hatred towards Kate. What person in their right mind would turn down the opportunity to earn tens of thousands of dollars more for way less work so that you could provide a better life for your children? If people stopped to think about it objectively for a minute they might feel differently. I don’t think Kate is playing the victim at all…she has freely admitted her own mistakes and character flaws very honestly and has never taken advantage of the many opportunities she has been given to publicly bash Jon. I admire her honesty and her restraint.

She actually gets up in the morning to read what the tabloids have to say about her! Who does that! I don’t blame Jon for cheating on this wench. The only other option was to strangle her! I actually respect Paris Hilton more for not taking herself so seriously. She knows that she is a joke, and goes along with it. This B**ch actually believes she is important!

I completely agree. It’s obvious that her worthless husband isn’t paying his share and she has 8 precious babies to care for. She needs to strike while the irons hot. I watched *Jon and Kate Plus 8* and agree that she wasn’t always nice to Jon, but she had to be the adult, because he certainly wasn’t or is. I do believe she is changing for the good and only wish the best for her.
Kat – I agree with you. I don’t understand all the Kate bashing and hatred that is directed at her. I really enjoyed her on this interview and while I am not a fan of her dancing, I do get where she is coming from. It will be interesting to see what she does after DWTS.
I voted for her – as many times as possible on the phone and on the internet. I’d rather watch her genuinely trying to learn how to dance 100 times over than watch another pouty “I’m so sexy” face from Pam Anderson or a “gee whiz this is so hard to learn” face from Nicole the “semi professional” dancer! Sure there are dozens of jobs she could get that don’t involve TV – but if you had the choice of making hundreds of thousands of dollars on TV vs. shlepping bed pans for what $60K per year max as a nurse – then honestly which would you choose? People keep getting on her case, but if they were given the exact same choice of working less for more money or working 12 hour days and seeing your kids even less – they would make the exact same decision. If you disagree – you’re either completely naive or would actually prefer working more for less pay!
The thing is, Leslie, she is getting paid hundreds of thousands of dollars when she has no skills, talent, or education. She says she focuses on her family, but in reality she spends most of her time in Hollywood and with hairdressers, manicurists, PR folk, and now on TV promoting her book. Didn’t she celebrate her birthday recently in Las Vegas? When she’s actually home she practices “dancing” in the basement with Tony. She has multiple nannys and housekeepers taking care of the kids. And yet the only reason – the ONLY reason – she’s famous is because she had a lot of babies. Wow. What is that teaching OUR children?

The thing is Maryland – about 30% of the people on TV actually have some discernible talent these days. Kate is no different – but millions of people loved watching her and her children on Jon & Kate plus 8. How is she really any different from any other Mom on TV?

It sounds like you are jealous. Kate is a pretty lady who just happened to be in the right place at the right time multiple times in a row. I thought she was pretty funny on Leno, and I don’t see her playing the victim. She just plays whatever role she is offered. A typical working mom works 40 hours a week plus commute time. So is she really away more often than normal? It doesn’t appear so. She is on a cash cow right now, and it will fade soon, so she is riding it for all its worth. When all is said and done, and she has faded back into the background, she will have a nice nestegg and will not need to worry about the large family she has to raise alone, and neither will the taxpayer. It sounds like a win-win situation.
Couldn’t agree more. I’m not really a Kate supporter, but I don’t begrudge her the money she is making from all the interviews and reality shows she does. If it gives her more of a chance to be a better mom then I am all for it. The kids are now out of the spotlight and that is all that matters as far as I can see. Seriously, what would you choose if you had 8 kids? Would you really want to work 10 to 12 hours a day at a very draining job to not even make ends meat (60k a year would do nothing towards supporting these kids) or would you take the hundreds of thousands for doing tv appearances AND have more time to spend with your children? It is a no brainer to me. She probably does revel a little too much in some of the fame, like when she got those hair extensions and did that photo shoot. What was that about? But other than that she is a harmless mom just trying to get by with 8 kids.
Pamela doesn’t dance with her face. She is graceful and actually can dance. Kate is stiff and has no musicality. She acts like she is the first and only single mother on the planet. Since she insists that Tony work at her house, he has to give up time with his children.
And it’s very interesting that no one is bashing Tony for choosing to participate in a show that keeps him away from his kids. He could also get a different kind of job just as Kate could but because he’s a father he doesn’t get the criticism that a mother does. I don’t care about Kate one way or another but essentially she’s being criticized for being a working mother.
She gets criticism because all she does is whine abour how tough her life is. Get in line sister, lots of people have it worse than you (Kate).
Just keep watching her for awhile, you’ll hate her soon.
People watch and keep Kate on the show because people love train wrecks. Call Billy Bush, he’s Kate’s biggest fan…maybe they can get together. I feel sorry for the kids and don’t be so sure that Kate may end up paying John child support. Over $21,000 a week, who make that kind of money. She said on TV last night she has a lot of legal bills. I thought she was working to “feed her kids”. Most of America’s kids should be fed and clothed even half as well. What a shame

And while she has no REAL talent (acting, dancing, singing, being a parent or good person, etc.), she does possess one trait that we American tv viewers cannot seem to resist. She is as world class drama queen. Yes, people tune in to watch her fall because all she does is complain about her sorry life and her lack of special toasters. What I personally want to know is why her poor dance partner hasn’t just pushed her off the stage. He should win just for putting up with her! Who wants to switch places with her? 8 kids to provide for and an ex-husband, whose current occupation is sleeping with multiple 20 somethings and suing you. Kate is a registered nurse, but who wants to work on the floor earning under 100K a year when you can do one show and make that easily? Jon is not supporting the kids, so Kate is handling business just like any other mom would do if put in the same situation.
