Zac Efron starring in 'Snabba Cash': Wait...Snabba wha?

High School Musical heart-throb Zac Efron is producing and starring in a remake of Snabba Cash, a Swedish thriller based on a 2006 novel written by Jens Lapidus about three friends involved in the drug trade and organized crime. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Efron will play the central character, a money launderer trying to strike it rich (the title roughly translates to “easy money”) by running cocaine for a dealer. This was reportedly a hot commodity with Warner Bros. and Efron winning rights after a bidding war.

The high school cutie bowed out of the Footloose remake (which is looking like a better idea all the time as it continues to hit snags) because he didn’t want to be typecast as a singing, dancing pretty boy. Money launderer cum drug runner in a remake of a Swedish action thriller sounds like a definite step in that new direction for him. Whaddya think, though, PopWatchers? Can you buy this guy as a bad-boy criminal?

I just hope he isn’t trying too hard to innovate his image. I loved him in HSM and 17 Again…he’s going to start losing his audience if he takes the risk and the movie flops….and by the sound of this plot….not sure how it’s going to fare at the box office.

I’d imagine at this point he can afford to be in a movie that isn’t a blockbuster. This is the time to take risks before it becomes impossible for him to get cast in something other than a musical. I’d also be really surprised if he lost a significant number of fans over one movie.

this is THE time to take risks, at least for zac. the only way to grow as an actor is to take risks, even if you end you falling short of your goal. right now, i dont think this needs to be a blockbuster. a movie like this is not favored to be a blockbuster. it just needs to capture the attention of critics and hopefully have them leaving the theater with plans to write nice reviews.

Just watch the trailer to Twelve with Chase Crawford to see how well this works.

Hope it works out better for Zac then “Medellin” worked out for Vincent Chase (Fictional actor on HBO’s Entourage). Watch the faux trailer for Medellin and imagine Zac Effron in the title role.

you gotta do what you gotta do!

I think it’s great he’s trying to break out of his type-casting. He’s young enough and early enough in his career that he can pull it off… Assuming, of course, he can act the serious roles.

if he has good acting chops besides commedy, i think he could pull it off. the bigger public hasnt seen him really, just heard him and saw him do some songs. is he actually working on something right now?

  • Denise

Not sure but willing to check it out to see if he can pull it off.

At least he’s not sitting pretty waiting for all the good scripts to fall on his table. You go, Efron!

This was one of the best movies in sweden last year. If it flops, its a bad producejob…

This is kinda reminiscent of JT in Alpha Dog. I can dig it.

Look, I love Zach Efron. I loved 17 Again, loved Me and Orson Welles, so I wish him luck.

Trying too hard. Silly. At least Pattinson is being cannier with Water for Elephants which has action, some comedy and melodrama. Efron is such a short little actor he;s going to look ridiculous

  • taskforce

He isnt a good enough actor. The strain will show and we’ll see throuhg the cracks. Poor devil.

Obviously you haven’t seen “Miracle Run” which plays an autistic teen. He was awesome in that. Why don’t try watching the new movie first before you start writing him off?

  • Punky Brewster

    Yeah,no!!!
