'Lost' Exclusive: Team Darlton on remaining mysteries, post-finale 'radio silence'

Filed under: Lost, Television and tagged: ,

kimmel-lostImage Credit: Adam Larkey/ABCEvery week — or at least whenever they have a free moment — Lost executive producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof record a Podcast in which they discuss the past week’s episode, preview the upcoming week’s episode, answer (or evade) fan questions, and address the the general state of Lost. For some fans, the podcast is an important part of their Lost experience. For other fans, such as myself, the podcast is an invitation to crash a computer. Seriously: for some reason, my technology routinely fails me when it comes to listening to the podcast. I am beginning to suspect sinister forces at work in the world, denying me access to the secret knowledge that Damon and Carlton are sharing with the world. It’s true, isn’t it? Tell me!

And while you’re at it, tell me what the news is that the producers share in these exclusive excerpts from their new podcast, which should be available later today at abc.com. (Podcast streaming after the jump.)

I am told these clips have Team Darlton clarifying their participation in Jimmy Kimmel’s special salute to the show after the Lost finale on May 23, as well as their plans to go “radio silent” after sharing their two-hour series capper. I am also told these clips have Team Cuselof addressing the issue of remaining mythology mysteries and if and how they may be addressed in the final hours of the show. Then again, I could be wrong. Perhaps, in truth, these clips discuss the concept of anamnesis and how it explains the phenomenon of revelation and recollection currently breaking out like Pentecost in the Sideways world. (Is the Sideways world an incomplete, imperfect replica of reality constructed out of the ideal world of Forms represented by The Island world? Does the outbreak of recollection of these Forms represent the redemption and completion of this flawed reality?) Perhaps these clips reveal that Lost is a dramatic illustration of the ideas about art, love, and reality found in Iris Murdoch’s essays “The Fire and The Sun” and “The Sublime and the Good.” (See? Art — and even TV — really can direct us toward that which can be called The Good!) Or maybe they finally reveal that yes, season six really is all about zombies. Again: you tell me! Use your superior techncology to access the posted clips and file your notes in our underground message boards!

I would totally buy that leaflet.

Get the Lost Encyclopedia! It’s the only official Lost book, and it’s being released the same day Season 6 gets released on DVD/Blu-ray (8/24/2010).

      • denniswharwich

        beiji, get bent

      • babey

      • Chipmunk

Why does Damon Lindelof looks like the ex-manager of the Chipmunks?

        Alvin!!!

  • RK

Don’t waste your time. These were pointless.

  • JD

    Two Thing:

NO MORE calling these guys “Darlton”
    and
    NO MORE “teams”

    • Centient

      Seconded.

      • Jaymii

I’ll keep calling them Darlton, thanks – its better than The Creators and shorter than Damon and Carlton.

      • crunchy

With that extra .7 seconds you save by not saying both names I hope you’re able to work out a solution to the current economic crisis.

      • Montand’s Arm

I prefer to call them Darlton Lindelcuse.

      • Ian

@ Crunchy….Probably not. But in that extra .7 seconds, I figured out why you’re still a virgin.

Doc wrote – “…like Pentecost in the Sideways world” Wow Doc, I have to say, you are like the most Biblically literate person I have ever read posting on pop culture. I would be fascinated to know your actual views on faith and God and such. Not just your ruminations on how they all relate to LOST. Though those are fun too.

  • Admiral Quality

Yes, the podcasts are frustrating with that in-browser player. I can usually get through without crashing (Windows XP and Explorer 8), but if I try to random access the timeline gets all screwed up and I usually have reload the page and listen from the start again.

I miss the old days when you could just download the .mp3 file. I blame Apple and ABC for getting in bed with them.

They also frequently mislabel the video podcast as audio, and vice versa. You’d think a television network might have someone on staff who has some experience with distributing media.

Oh and Kris White’s strange delivery style gives me the creeps. Act normal, weirdo!

    • Drew

You know you can download them from iTunes and save yourself the streaming worries, right? Plus, you have them forever!

      • Mike

I think that’s why he was blaming APPLE in one point of the argument lol

But yeah, iTunes is how I roll too.

  • Jason

With all that there is online for Lost junkies, I choose just 2 sources. Doc and the ABC podcast. Doc is very insightful and a podcast from the head writers/producers is the closest thing to reading the script. I’ll give it a listen even it 15 minutes later I’m left with terrible puns and political sounding answers to good questions.

  • Jana

Not worth it. It’s getting really silly now, just like the show. booooo!

  • David

Given that Darlton deliberately established and played off certain mysteries in prior seasons, and used said mysteries to drive the popularity of the show, it’s somewhat strange that they now want us to conveniently let them off the hook for answers as soon as answers would be expected.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t expect answers to every question. But I think the writers should be more honest about making mistakes and leading us down the wrong path in prior seasons. For example, if we’re not going to get answers about characters like Alvar Hanso, that’s fine, but at least tell us straight up that the Season Two Orientation video was a huge red herring or something. The problem is Lost’s writers can’t have it both ways; they can’t establish all these mysteries for us to solve, then refuse to solve them and blame us for asking questions.

    • Riggs

You’re jumping the gun on what is “unanswered.” I’ll reserve my judgement until the finale.

    • Lynn

It shows that many (all?) of these mysteries were created for the sake of creating mysteries. There never were answers or connections, and this season is just trying to cobble something together out of some of the threads that led nowhere. To me, this makes my investment in the whole show pointless, but I know others just like the ride.

      • Shotgunsamurai42

I would like to see the evidence for this.

    • Michele

DUDE. I completely agree. While I know that every single mystery cannot be literally explained, certainly the mystery of Alvar Hanso/Dharma Initiative. What exactly was Dharma’s motives and research? Season 2 was always my favorite, and it’s bumming me out big time that that season just seems completely irrelevant as of right now. It would be nice if Dharma somehow tied in to the ending at least. That is a pretty significant issue to leave un-touched. Otherwise, what was season 2 for then?

      • Dave

I felt that season 5 pretty much covered everything I desperately needed to know about the Dharma Initiative. At this point, I really don’t need any more information regarding DI. Were you paying attention last season?

      • Pantagathus

So Dave, it covered whether it was Jacob or MIB that allowed them to come to the island and do their thing? Right… Dharma is totally unanswered at this point.

    • Keeks

What do you need to know about Alvar Hanson? We DO know what their research entailed! We know what was happening at each station. We had almost a whole season of LeFleur and the others working with Dharma in the 70s. We saw Dr. Candle (or whatever) building the secret station to harness the energy they knew was there. But then they were all wiped out by the Others/natives. This question is maybe still unanswered, but I’m not sure what all else you need to be satisfied on this one. Curious to know!

    • elizabeth

Keep in mind that mystery has used red herrings since the genre emerged. Hitchcock loved them and even gave them his own name (which most I suspect know), McGuffins. Usually to redirect a viewer to keep them from guessing the resolution too soon. Seems reasonable for LOST, eh? As for Alvar Hanso, I’m already satisfied on that front. I’m more interested in his descendent, Widmore.

  • Greg

I agree with David entirely. The producers/writers can’t have it both ways. Also, to say that they’ll only answer questions that are “important to the characters” is a cop-out. The characters are creations of the writers, so they’re essentially saying that they’ll only answer questions that are important to themselves!

    • Tim

This is just a lack of fundamental understanding of writing.

    • BradP

They’re the storytellers, so of course they’ll only answer the questions that are important to themselves. This show would never have gotten off the ground, much less had the success that it’s had, if they wrote strictly to appease fans (ie, Heroes). I know The Stand by Stephen King is a source of inspiration for Cuse and Lindelof. If you read it, you’ll see that many of the most burning questions don’t get answered, yet it’s still an amazing story.

  • In SD

Is the:Darma initiative: name in actuality a smush up of Damon and Carlton?

    • Casey

      uh…what?

  • thorsten

I totally love the podcasts, and do miss Kris White already. I usually listen to them straight in iTunes on my Mac. It’s hillarious how Damon and Carlton handle the questions, and how they drop valuable information during the sessions. Damon said ages ago for example that the hatch went »sideways« after Desmond turned the failsafe key. Sitting here in europe right now with the airports closed down because a cloud of black smoke left The Iceland… I just missed my Ajira to Guam.

    • Is it Tuesday yet?

Can you explain the comment about the hatch going sideways? I don’t listen to all the podcasts (bc I suck) so I missed that and it sounds AWESOME.

    • mcass

“A cloud of black smoke left The Iceland.” so you missed your Ajira to Guam. Thorsten, I love your comment.

  • Sun Worshipper

meh. Please don’t tell me it’s just a mensa kid thinking up everything. I really hope these guys answer at least the pertinent question of what is the point of this whole show. I’ll be happy with that.
And Darlton..if you want somebody who will write your next show, you should talk to me. I’ll definitely do a good job!

    • Darlton

Give us your phone number. We can’t wait to work with you.

  • DogBoy

I find it very frustrating to think that about three whole seasons of LOST were a red herring… the existence of the Dharma Initiative on the island is almost completely irrelevant to the direction the ending is heading.
And where the hell is Vincent?!

    • Kate

Vincent’s with Rose and Bernard in 1977. Did he get blowed up? Depends on what reality you’re in, I guess.

      • Robert Singleton

Is that a reference to SCTV — “He blowed up real good” — or am I jumping to conclusions?

    • Shotgunsamurai42

Idk how you can say that the first three seasons were a red herring when so many things that occurred in those seasons are relevant today.

  • Jymmymack

The Dharma Initiative was established in order to change the “Valenzetti Equation” (4 8 15 16 23 42) in order to prevent the end of the world. They were attempting to use the island to accomplish this.

  • Lostie

wasn’t Rose’s name on the list? Don’t they have to be witht he other losties to get off the island? Right the people either have to be all together ir dead to get off the island…Am I completlt of base here? I am a bit confused
