'Glee': Did Sue put enough of herself in 'Vogue'?

I love Sue Sylvester’s shot-by-shot recreation of Madonna’s “Vogue” video (embedded after the jump), but part of me wishes she’d put even more of herself in it. My favorite bits are the Sue snarl that accompanies the choreographed elbow at 1:50, her pushing away the hairstylist at 2:07, “Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Sue Sylvester, dance on air” at 2:25, and “Lauren, Katherine, Lana, too, Will Schuester, I hate you” (followed by Kurt’s confused look) at 2:33. I suppose they needed to establish that it was a an all-out remake of the video, so they didn’t want to deviate too soon. (Jane Lynch’s dancing at 1:38 is priceless by itself.) And the bits they did tweak toward the end didn’t feel forced. Did it live up to your expectations, exceed them, or leave you wanting more?

I would have liked more of a personalized version. I felt it was too much of a copy. Still enjoyed it though

      Completely agreed

        Me three.

    • bambam

      all sorts of awesome!

  • Adam

I was surprised how much I didn’t like it. Too much a shot-for-shot remake with too few of those quirky moments. What a disappointment.

  • Ceballos

I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again:

I admire the detail that went into the shot-by-shot recreation, but I definitely think the Madonna rap should’ve been entirely “Glee”-centric to differentiate the video a bit more.

Otherwise, I’m just watching Gus Van Sant’s “Psycho.”

    • paige

OMG hysterical!!!!!! as much as i want to agree with you though, I dont think this was much of a train-wreck or ill-advised as Psycho was.

      • Ceballos

Ok, so playing the “Psycho” card was a bit harsh because it suggests that I didn’t enjoy the “Vogue” video (which I did…especially Chris Colfer’s performance in it).

It’s just that, being Sue’s first ever musical performance, I think it was a big missed opportunity to be funnier or nastier. When every other character sings (the ones who are actually singers), I can accept a more straightforward performance.

(True confessions time: As woefully ill-advised as it was, I don’t hate GSV’s “Psycho.” I think it’s kind of an interesting failure.)

      • paige

“interesting failure”… thats a good word. But is it interesting because it’s Gus Van Sant? how is it different than Roland Emmerich’s hysterical misfire that was Godzilla…

      • Ceballos

        Good question:

I think Emmerich’s “Godzilla” was a failure because he basically discarded everything that was fun and that people liked about the original (not completely unlike what happened with the new “Clash of the Titans”) and made a personality-free monster movie. On the other hand, Peter Jackson, for example, actually bothered to spend time (some people actually think TOO much time) giving his creature protagonist a personality in his own monster movie remake. (That was also the first and last time I’ll put Jackson’s name in the same paragraph as Emmerich’s.)

As for GSV’s “Psycho”: its very existence is undeniably pointless. However, if you like the original “Psycho”, you can’t technically call the new one bad because it’s pretty much the EXACT same thing, no? I also like the cast (Macy, Moore, Mortensen and even Vince Vaughn was a misguided but delightfully left-field choice for Norman Bates.) You also have a good point that Van Sant probably colors my impression of it – if it had been directed by someone hackier, I probably wouldn’t be as kind.

Anyway, back to “Glee” – maybe I’ll enjoy the video more when I see it in its proper context within the episode.

      • Madd

Here’s the thing though- Vogue is a slightly ridiculous music video that I’m sure has been parodied many times.
Psycho was a classic that in my opinion sets the standard for all suspense films.
I actually haven’t seen the remake of Psycho, mostly because I love a lot of Gus Van Sant’s films.
And, I do like Vince Vaughn, but I don’t see how his performance could possibly be as good as Anthony Perkins.

I thought it was AWFUL. What a waste.I thought it was going to be a campy vamp thru the video, but it was just a boring copy. Booooo!

  • I heart Sue

I laughed so hard I fell of my chair last night when I saw it. I loved the episode–but pretty sure the Vogue video was my very favorite! Kurt’s expression when Sue sang about Will was the best part!! FANTASTIC!

    • borgqueen

Me freaking too. I loved this video. I cant stop laughing. Maybe Sue’s next foray into remaking video she will interject more of herself in the video. I just watched it 2 more times. Jane Lynch congrats on ur marriage this wk.

  • elena

I thought it was awesome just because there is never enough Jane Lynch in Glee. Never enough. A whole three minutes with her dancing/singing? Love.

  • Allison

I thought it was one of the most perfect things ever. Loved loved loved it.

  • Diana

Oh my god, this was fantastic! I was speechless the entire time until the “Will Schuster, I hate you” and lost it!

    • borgqueen

that was the part I lost it too.

  • AL

I thought it was great, but I agree that there needed to be some more of Sue in it. I kept waiting for her to show up in a track suit at some point.

    • Tevye

The thing that made it hilarious was that it wasn’t playing on obvious humor like a track suit. It was all subtly Sue – look at the way she moves, not a dancer but a gym teacher. It was entirely in-character and that made it so funny.

  • Andyh72

    To Allison- Ditto!

    I loved it as well.

  • steve

I’ll repeat it, since it can never be said enough.

There is NO SUCH THING as too much Jane Lynch. She was fantastic.

Looking forward to next week’s eppy!!

  • RW

LOVED IT! I like that her expression was restrained and channelling Madonna. I thought there was just enough moments, otherwise, it would’ve been too over the top. Kurt’s expression was hysterical.

  • Danielle

Anyone else see the kid from So You Think You Can Dance in it? Thought that was pretty cool, even though I never liked him.

    • Shannon

      YES! NATHAN!

  • sina

It was not good. There was no Sue in it. When I was watching it, I just saw the actress doing a spin on Madonna. It could have been a shot from a Christopher Guest movie she has done but there was so Sue in that video at all.

    • Liana C

Who do you know that can do a “spin on Madonna” and get away with it? Jane Lynch was awesome, and while replicating, there was definitely a hint of self-deprecation and irony in it all. She was terrific. Will definitely keep this video!
