Sony exec disses poor 3D, touts badass 'Resident Evil: Afterlife' trailer

DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg isn’t the only one who thinks poorly-executed conversions could kill 3D. Hiroshi Yoshioka, Sony’s executive deputy president and president of its consumer products and devices group, used his keynote address at the National Association of Broadcasters on Monday to issue a warning. “Poorly executed 3D is harmful, and it threatens its long-term success,” he said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “Remember that 3D is a natural experience; it is how most of us see the world everyday. We must give consumers great 3D that looks natural and feels wonderful.” Of course, he went on to tout Sony’s comprehensive 3D technologies and to show the Resident Evil: Afterlife trailer, which boasts that it was “Filmed With The James Cameron/Vincent Pace Fusion Camera System”… “The World’s Most Advanced 3D Technology.”

The cynic in you could roll your eyes at the name-dropping, but when it comes to this technology, it does matter. Watch the trailer after the jump, and you see the difference between a movie that was shot as a 3D film and one that was converted after the fact. Anyone else tempted to see their first Resident Evil?

Yes, RE4 is using Avatar’s 3D tech, but I don’t care. I’d argue crap movies like Resident Evil are just as harmful to the future of 3D. They’d have to pay me to watch that garbage.

Up-converting in post sucks, but that doesn’t mean we need to rush out to see the first sh*t movie we can just because they’re doing it right. I’ll wait for QUALITY 3D movies, thank you.

I agree with you Rob. We’ve seen with Clash of the Titans that adding 3D in post-processing simply isn’t going to cut it. But if the movie is bad in the first place, then no special 3D camera is going to save your film.

      AMEN Brother!!!

        Thank You!

I’m optimistic that other movies will actually use Cameron’s 3D system instead of conversion, but it’s not gonna pull me into Resident Evil – looks like just a bunch of stuff being tossed out of the screen for it’s own sake.

All I know is Cameron and Pace are going to make a hell of a lot of money on this technology.

    • Quirky

I wonder if Cameron actually holds the patent? He could make more money off that than he made off Avatar.

This is great news, I think people SHOULD try out and go see Resident Evil:Afterlife. It’s going to be great!! Come on, try out your first RE movie guys! When I saw the trailer with “Clash of the Titians” the trailer 3D was better than the whole movie!

I agree, I think this movie looks great! Cant wait to see it in 3-D!

    ITS NOT CONVERTED!!!!!!!!!!!!
THIS DUMB ASS WEBSITE DOESNT KNOW WHAT THEYR’RE TALKING ABOUT!!!!!! THE MOVIE WAS CONCEIVED IN 3D….IN OTHER WORDS…..IT WAS MADE IN 3D

I don’t think you know how to read English. No one said RE4 was converted. In fact, the articles explicitly states that it was filmed using Cameron’s 3D technology.

What they’re saying is Resident Evil: Afterlife was filmed in 3D – others are complaining movies such as “Clash of the Titans” was converted after production wrapped, so that’s why it didn’t look that great.

    1) The only difference that I can see between the 2 trailers is that the 2nd one was sharper. Other than that, I was not impressed. 3-D should be for “Event” movies intended to be in 3-D. I do not want, nor will I spend money on every new film released in 3-D because most of these were not filmed to be 3-D and therefore the added 3-D effects are cheesy to the Max! This is the line of thinking in Hollywood that we will pay top dollar for converted crap, so they can make extra dollars in the 1st weekend, which will kill what made spending an extra $3 to $5 dollars so special.

I saw no difference in the trailers at all. They both said they were made with Cameron’s fusion 3D.

      • 44rqwe

there is no difference idiot they’re the same video.

  • jpratm

i agree-CLASH OF THE TITANS did not merit a 3d release – RE:AFTERLIFE is eye candy – cant wait for it

  • Slipknotfan87

  • Mas’ud

  • chrisp

The movie looks like it’ll be fun.

I’m surprised to find out RE Afterlife was shot in 3D. The 3D trailer I saw made everything but the CGI objects coming at you look flat as a pancake. I thought for sure this was a post 3D project. I don’t understand how that trailer looked so flat. For that matter, the 3D didn’t look impressive (deep) for Tron Legacy and I saw that trailer several times in an Imax theater.
It sucks that this post 3D garbage has me second guessing these movies.
