'The Real Housewives of New York' recap: The rift deepens, LuAnn lurks, Ramona shrugs

Houswives-NYImage Credit: BravoWe met up last night on the Brooklyn Bridge — Bethenny in layers of black technical fabric, Ramona of course in velour — for a lovely morning walk and some supportive chit chat between friends. Bethenny started recklessly unloading about the wretched phone call with Jill, without realizing that six words in her confidante had sprouted fangs. Ramona jerked her head twice in response before letting the epithets fly. What? She was just being honest! “I think you are a press monger… I just think you’re very self-serving.” (But my 75,000 tweetle lee deeters now know of your blasted HSN line!, cried Bethenny.) “At least I have friends. Who are your friends?… You have nobody in your life… Right now you have Jason but you’ll probably mess that up too.” Bethenny’s face started doing that full-gale quiver thing that we’ve all become sadly familiar with, the pre-cry quake that melts anyone with a soul, but not our Ramona! “Next time I won’t tell you how I feel,” she said by way of apology. In Brooklyn, both ladies looked like they wanted to jump into Simon’s arms  so he could shush their frazzled nerves and pat their hair while singing them badly botched French nursery rhymes.

The tension was broken for a brief la-la-la sequence with Kelly. She had a story to report on the latest fashion trends. Her mission — What is Trendy? Like, do you see her jaunty little black knit hat? That’s totally trendy. But you wouldn’t know that if she hadn’t told you that. And she wouldn’t know that unless she had taken it to the streets for some hardcore investigative reporting. “Hi-yah!” she whined pleasantly to anyone she passed. “Puh-leeeeeeeeze,” she whined miserably to all those wise New Yorkers who told her they were late catching a bus or a cab or a train or a cold. Eventually she muscled a few young men into talking as she ticked off her questions from her Hello Kitty-wearing-Louis-Vuitton clipboard. Are you a foxy athlete? Are you wearing underwear? How do I turn on my camera? (Two kids, and you’ve never pulled out your digital before? I don’t care if Gilles invented the fricking camera and you keep him locked inside your Trojan horse in case Sea ever does anything cute and you need it caught on film. My 21-month-old has taken a very artsy portfolio of the dog’s ears. Please tell me Kelly that you do in fact know how to press on.)

Cut to an impossibly contrived sleepover with LuAnn and Jill. Now I believe that LuAnn sleeps in satin or silk each evening. But Jill dear. You’ve already told us that you normally rock sweats with Bobby. So why are you in that ridiculous Danielle Steele-off-the-shoulder number? The two sat ramrod straight in bed, just girl-talking, you know, and trying to recreate some of the cozy intimacy of Jill and Bethenny from bedrooms past. Ginger farted. LuAnn spoke French. Jill bitched about the fact that Kelly dared let bygones be bygones with Bethenny. Snooze.

Back in Brooklyn (represent!), Bethenny met Alex to further prepare for Brooklyn Fashion Weekend. Within seconds of meeting Alex’s kind and pooling eyes, Bethenny broke down and admitted that she was a mess. Her father, whose actual crimes we don’t know but who I have painted as some cold and boorish monster in my head, is dying and she must somehow say goodbye to a man she hasn’t spoken to in years. These are the moments when Alex really shines. Unlike any other Housewife I can think of, Alex has the ability to actually listen and to make a conversation not about her. “You’re telling me you’re not sad and you’re crying,” she softly chided Bethenny. Alex encouraged Bethenny and gracefully put her back together. Well done, Alex! She later brought that same sense of decency and calm to the table with Jill, who had made the trek out to Brooklyn to try and prove that she was a nice woman and doesn’t bear ill will toward the mini-Van Kempens  after all. Alex — who I must say strikes me as disturbingly pale and thin and in need of a good night’s sleep and a cheeseburger — urged Jill to reach out to Bethenny. Without promptly vomiting up the nitty gritty of Bethenny’s sorrow, she told the red-headed woman — who kept bleating out the importance of relationships, relationships are all we have — to tend some to this broken relationship and a young woman in need. Jill twitched back in response, blathering about how money didn’t give you happiness. It’s like she’s written down six taglines to explain this rift between her and Bethenny and she just repeats them over and over to herself like they’re her mantras.

Oh Ramona, who are you kidding? I like you dear because I believe you know not what you do. You are a dummy who is convinced of your own good intentions. I believe that she convinced herself that she arranged the Bethenny/Jill confrontation at her apartment in the name of saving a friendship. I also believe her heart sung at the possibility of drama and bloodletting in her princess-style bedroom and that when the Bravo producers hugged her for making the scene happen  she clung tight to their sharp breasts and basked in the sense that she was the best little Housewife in the world. Bethenny arrived, looking wary and vulnerable. (And still reeling evidently from her father’s refusal to see her in L.A. Oof, this woman was an open wound walking into Ramona’s.) LuAnn tried to make it all about her, and fumed when she was banished to the foyer. Jill seemed genuinely stunned and kept yapping about an ambush. To her credit — and after Ramona told her at the front door to stay calm and not act like a cat — Bethenny was quiet and restrained, sadly telling Jill that she wasn’t there to win or prove her case or attack anyone. She just wanted to sit down with her friend and talk face to face.

Would that Jill rose to the occasion! (And how revealing it was when she bemoaned the fact that she wasn’t packing her list of grievances that she’d made up to prove that she indeed was the wronged woman and Bethenny ought to burn.) It was a terrible conversation, with Bethenny crying and asserting her genuine love for Jill and her regret that everything had gotten so messed up. Jill wouldn’t let go of her anger though, and apparently does not like anyone daring to suggest she herself assume some responsibility. Every time it seemed like perhaps Jill’s cold heart was thawing just a tad, LuAnn inevitably swooped in bearing tea and crumpets. Or LuAnn would bellow from the hall, like Simon from the O.C. sensing that Tamra and Vicki might be sharing a moment, that their car was ready and it was time for Jill to go. (So weird!) The conversation ended with Jill declaring that she can’t have toxicity in her life. Bethenny was shuffled out of the apartment, left to cry one assumes alone in the elevator. Jill wondered if it was weird that she herself wasn’t crying, and then promptly broke down in tears. “Maybe I’m wrong,” she said. “Maybe I’ve been too hard on her? Maybe I’m wrong?” Before she could sit with the uncomfortable possibility LuAnn shushed her and the two turned on Ramona.

“Who brought her here?” demanded Jill. “Ramona!” cried Luann. “No, no, no,” denied Ramona, backing into the hallway, grabbing for a knife that she’d stashed under her Marilyn Monroe gown.

What did you all think? Do you want Alex to be your therapist for a day? Do you worry about her thinning hair and wan complexion? When Bethenny cries, do you cry? Is LuAnn conniving or simply doing her best to be a good friend to Jill? Was Kelly’s dress too short or just right?

What a painful episode. Jill let her anger and crazy Luann get in the way of reconciling a relationship that was really important to her. I wonder if Luann was scared they would be friends again and Luann would no longer be Jill’s BFF and she seems to want that more than anything right now.

    • Christina

I agree with you that Luann is worried that she will no longer have a BFF. It’s such a shame that it has gone this far with Jill and Bethenny…I mean really…has Jill even looked at these episodes herself so she can see from the outside in.

    • jill

lmao….she is not having a good week…even ramona is dissing her..but ,,,i guess a 50 yr old tired jap had it coming

        lady-eating kraken.
She Takes Things She’s Done Wrong and Blames them on Other People:
Jill says to Alex: “You were mad at me,” but “I’m over it.” Um … She was mad at Jill because Jill was nasty about her kids. She’s the one who needs to get over it, not Jill. (And by the way, someone should tell Jill that there is film in those cameras. As much as she denied being mean about the kids, it was on television.)
She Ignores Information That Doesn’t Fit Into the Plotline She Sees for Herself: Particularly galling was the way she blew off what Alex was trying to tell her about Bethenny’s dad.
She Is a Drama Queen: Perhaps this goes without saying, but we lost our minds when she went off on how she’s not going to invest in a friendship with Bethenny “at the cost of me and my health and my family” Your health? You’re the one that gives people hives! And the whole way she behaves during the fight with Bethenny, the whole “THIS IS TOO MUCH FOR ME,” schtick, is just too much. Holy Christ, woman. You’re a 40-year-old woman in an Upper East Side penthouse, not a Haitian refugee.
She Thinks She’s Wise. But She’s a Buffoon: “Relationships is all we have left in this world,” she lectures Alex, whose skull cavity appears to be filling up with vomit at the moment. “That’s it, doesn’t matter about money. Money, are you kidding me?” Hey, Jill, remember when you were bragging about the diamond card you got from Saks? Like, ten minutes ago?
She Is a Coward: We covered this last week, but the way Jill couldn’t handle an actual confrontation (as opposed to incessant backstabbing) is such proof of this. Very early on she revealed why she was so nervous — she’d made a list of grievances and forgot to bring it. What?? We haven’t thought of doing that since we got in a fight with the mean girls in Mrs. Powers’s class in the fifth grade.
She Can’t Accept Responsibility: “I’m not accepting it,” she said at the end of the fight with Bethenny. It didn’t even seem like she realized how much she’d revealed in that moment.
She Literally Does Not Understand Forgiveness: “For Kelly to just forgive [Bethenny] like that,” she admits, “I mean, I don’t understand that.”

JZsucks: I live in UES. I saw Jillousy and Bawwwby when I was coming out Bed Bath and Beyond on First Avenue. Their apartment is very close. Second time I saw Jillousy was when I was coming out of Vinoteca on Third. That time she was with Brad. Both instances she looks liek a south shore LI Jap who raided the sales rack at Loehmann’s. Nothing special, believe me. She does look younger in person but she ain’t no 40.
As for Zarin Fabrics, there is no way a fabric store is not sufferng in the economy. I’ve seen many successful restaurants close. If people cant afford to eat out, they sure as hell are not going to redecorate/refurnish their houses. I heard a rumor that Jill said she wante to sell her First Avenue apartment and move to a place in a desirable area like Park Avenue (in her dreams) . Let’s face it, not too many socialites live off First Avenue by the bridge.
To all Jillousy hater, become a fan on the Jill needs a hobby site in FB. NO, I didn’t start it but I just love seeing the number of fans grow! If you want to buy Jill’s book, spend it on a good stiff cocktail or a new lipstick. It would give you more pleasure and you wont be contributing to the Jill Zaaaarin Eyeliner Fund.

Not just NY. “money Can’t Buy You Class”. that should be your theme song. Glad BF cut you lose. She wasn’t the toxic one, you have proven to get the “Crown” for that honor!!!

    • petey

MAYBE JILL SHOULD TAKE THAT DIAMOND CARD TO SAKS TODAY….HER ONLY TALENT IS SPENDING BOBBYS $$$$$$
BOY I DONT THINK SHE HAS MANY FRIENDS LEFT

      • pat mclaughlin

Bull…Jill has plenty of friends other than what we see on TV. She made her point her relationship with Bethany has turned “toxic”. Bethany drinks too much and has a vicious personality. I stand with Jill; her social status and ability to be friends, mother Theresa to all. Bethany Blew it! Bethany slams into all of her friends. I am glad Jill finally becoming true to herself.

Jill Zarin is an embarassment. How can she sell a book of advice on relationships when she is so pathetic and self serving? LuAnn is equally ridiculous and the two of them deserve each other. How nice it is that they are both raising daughters. Hopefully, these young ladies are taking notes on what NOT to do in life by watching their Mommies. I guess money can buy you just about anything but class and decency…Jill and LuAnn are just sad and gross.

      • dani

I don’t think Jill’s book has anything about forgiveness. I thought it was really mean that she was mad that Kelly “made up” with Bethenny? Like, I’m not her friend and you shouldn’t be either..so childish..I feel ashamed of Jill. This season she has become NeNe, her head is too big for the show.

  • wendy

LuAnn is a baby. Holy crap Bethenny was right she almost put on a puppet show to break up what looked like progress in j and B’s fight. Also Jill grow up and face Bethenny ALONE and I think you guys will work it out if not interfered with.

    • the real wendy

but I agree with fake wendy

    • The Only Real Wendy

Agree with wendy and the other wendy.

      • Nancy

I agree with all the Wendys…and, Wendy is not fake – LuAnn is a big flake, I mean fake.

      • d4nie1

        Nancy, you mean snake.

  • JCity

There is just way too much fighting with these women – NYC, OC, ATL. The show is not enjoyable anymore.

  • Grady

LuAnn is the textbook definition of a busybody. SHE needs a hobby.

    • PAC

You are sooooo right about Lunatic Lu, but I also think she is unbelievably insecure, manipulative, and controlling. She doesn’t want any reconciliation between Jill and Bethenny even though it ‘all probably never be like it was. This would definitely threaten her BFF relationship. Jill is also off the hook with her vendetta. Wow, I really thought she was a better person than the way she is acting now.

  • Jen

LuAnn is.. she is just gross.

  • Dee

I officially can’t stand LuAnn. She is a snake like Bethenny said. Jill is a child and the biggest hypocrite. Her close relationship with LuAnn is phoney.

    • m-1

And….the snake was slithering in the hallway, listening and waiting for her chance to jump in and prevent any chance of LuAnn and Bethenny resolving their problem….she wants Jill all for herself and enjoys all the soap opera antics. WOMEN – GROW UP……none of you know what real, serious life is all about. Most women are dealing with the loss of jobs, trying to feed their families, etc…..but what would they know about that.

    • Uriel

Correct. Luann (aka The Countless) is working the drama and rifts between every one. Jill and Ramona are so pathetic. The show has become just to 7th grade for me. Kelli is the only sane one of the bunch. Although, she does dress like she’s desparate to be 20 again. She’s 40…embrass it.

      • Marisa

        :0 Kelly….sane?

Oh girl, what show are you watching??

  • LNewYork

I think Bethanney was absolutely right about Jill. Jill is a big crybaby. When you do not have a lot going on in your life it is much easier to see your friends. Bethenney started to have A LOT going on and did not have time for Jill. Jill needs to grow up. She has too many “rules” for being her “friend”. Alex was right. Jill does keep “score”. That is no friend.

  • LNewYork

They are all phoney friendships. They were thrown together on a TV show to make money. Nobody pays me to be friends with my friends! LOL!

  • tenlie

Luanne is too stupid and self-absorbed to connive. She’s just doing what comes naturally–making it all about HER.

  • Brooke

Oh dear. Another episode of Jill Zarin, Professional Victim. Barf.

  • Callie

Painful is right. I was worn out when the hour was over. What a bunch of pitiful, dysfunctional females (with the possible exception of Alex). Feel sorry for Bethenny. Really can’t stand Jill and LuAnn any longer. Seriously, can you say 16-year-old mean girls? (Jill, if you told Bethenny that Bobby was simply having a “procedure” rather than telling her it was cancer surgery, then you can’t blame her for not responding “appropriately.” Give up the “poor me, I’m a victim” crap.) Ramona … I think she really thinks she’s doing “good” whether she’s arranging a meeting in her condo or blurting hurtful and mean things on a bridge. Kelly — needs a sense of humor.

    • jenn

I heard that, too. Jill said it was a “procedure.” That could mean Bobby was having his wisdom teeth out, for goodness sakes. You can’t be intentionally vague and then get mad when you aren’t taken seriously.

  • DawninDenver

This show is not fun anymore.

  • heej

LuAnn proves that misery loves company.

  • GeeMoney

I went from Team Jill in the first few episodes to Team Bethenny after last night. Bethenny is right; Jill does keep score, and it was just sad to watch Bethenny pour her heart out to Jill and apologize while Jill sat there and did the complete opposite, and not to mention, she didn’t even own up to anything that she could have possibly done wrong to hurt Bethenny. Sad, sad, sad.

I hope Jill comes around and takes some responsibility by the end of the season; she was once my favorite person on the show, and now, I don’t know what to think of her. Ramona was a bi-atch for what she said on that bridge to Bethenny (totally uncalled for), Alex is becoming more and more of my favorite housewife every day, I’m starting not to like LuAnn, and Kelly is at least becoming more tolerable every episode. Can’t wait to see the ep where Bethenny screams at her, though!

  • CountlessER

The problem is Luanne. She needs to mind her own business. She is clearly a polarizing force. She is so happy to have a friend she is going to do anything to keep Jill.
I really thought Jill was smarter. She is being so manipulated by Luanne it is pathetic. Countless has absolutely NO redeeming qualities. Self-centered snob of the first degree with REALLY dismal people skills.

    • Trudie

I don’t think LuAnn is manipulating Jill. I think Jill is just surrounding herself with people who will take her side no matter what.

      • Kim

I agree with Trudie. Jill is not being manipulated by LuAnn…she’s too smart for her. Look at the email she sent Kelly in the last episode. I think that said a lot about Jill and her divisive ways. She wants to be in control…that whole diturbing scene of Bethenny crying her eyes out, pleading with Jill in an effort to just get some civility between them, was Jill having complete control over Bethenny. The ability to reduce her to a puddle. At this point I don’t see why Bethenny would want a friend like that.
