David Cross says 'Arrested Development' movie won't happen, and honestly that's okay

david-crossImage Credit: Justin Stephens/FoxDavid Cross, that Fünke everyone’s been talking about, candidly addressed the long-rumored Arrested Development movie during an interview with TV Squad. Presumably not in the voice of Mrs. Featherbottom, Cross said, “Way too much time it’s been [since the show ended]. I mean, there’s so many people involved. Everyone’s doing their own thing, you know. And everybody’s aged. It’s just not going to happen. I’m sure I speak for everybody when I say we’d love for it to happen, we’d love to work on it, but just I don’t think… not going to happen.”

I am a huge, huge, huge A.D. fan, but after all this speculation, I’ve long been okay with the idea of the movie not happening. The last thing I’d want is for the series’ greatness to be tainted with a you’ve-lost-that-lovin’-feeling movie (see: Strangers With Candy). Fans have 53 perfect episodes to watch on DVD every weekend. A fourth season would have been great in 2006, but there’s no need to push a movie in 2010.

Am I being totally blasphemous? Whatever. Blue me. I’ll teach you the ways of my secular flesh.

no i agree… if it doesnt happen 5 years after the last episode- its best to not ever happen.

  • Bill

Well, it seems as though Cross is just assuming a movie will not happen because of delays. He said it it worked out schedule wise they’d love to do it, so I’m still hoping this happens.

    • Nerd

I think there’s more to it than just scheduling. It’s more that the ‘iron’ is getting colder by the day and at some point striking it will just cause it to break.

  • Nerd

    Agreed.

Actually, I’ve felt this way since they started talking about the movie. It won’t be the same as the show. Things end and dinial doesn’t change that. A Deadwood movie on the other hand . . .

  • Nick

We’ll always have Wee Britain, and the O.C.(don’t call it that)

  • Kelly

Um, I completely agree. I used to like Sex and the City. Until I saw the movie. I really don’t want the movie to ruin the show for me.

If watching the SATC movie ruined the series for you, you probably weren’t much of a fan to begin with.

    • Mark

      oh ok

At it’s best, Sex and the City was insightful and funny. The movie was absurd in how bad it was. It was also 2 hours too long and incredibly indulgent. Offensive, even.

    • Jenny

The SATC movie didn’t ruin the series for me, but I think my husband was right when it seemed like it was more a parody of the show instead of a continuation. I prefer to pretend the movie just did not exist.

NOOOO! I read on this site not too long ago that Mitchell Hurwitz was working on a screenplay and the thing was all but a done deal. Tobias, you blow hard, you’ve made a huge mistake! Stop talking about this business of show… I would watch any of the cast of A.D. read from a phone book. Please don’t deprive me of George Michael and Maeby’s wedding!

    • Emily

HA, love it. I always did think that the wedding between George Michael and Maeby would be a fantastic plot for the movie.

I’m so upset. *Hangs head and walks away slowly*

christmas time is here starts to play…

      • Sarah

        Oh COME ON!!!

  • TJ

I always thought the movie was a bad idea. The entire series was so perfect, why take a chance on ruining it?

  • Jacob

I can’t be happy with this news, but I think I too would be okay if the movie never happened. I’m not wishing it to not happen, but I certainly won’t cry if it never gets off the ground.

  • Jenna

I think this is not unexpected, but it is still so sad at the same time.

I agree. My friends thought I was nuts for opposing a movie in the 1st place, but I never thought film would be the right medium for it (it’s not like they had an epic story left to wrap up, ala Firefly). And now, it’s been so long I just don’t see it being anything other than a pale imitation of the tv show’s greatness. So, I actually hope David Cross is right.

  • TS

Never watched it while it was on because outside of sports Fox has always been pretty lame IMO. However I recently watched all three seasons on Netflix and gotta say this show was hysterically funny. And the Tobias character was out of the park (ANALRAPIST). Forget the movie; I wish they’d gone on for a few more seasons. My fault…wasn’t there for them while they were on.

  • Madd

I want a movie so bad (I own the dvds…I lost track of how many times I’ve watched Good Grief…) but he kind of has a point. If it’s really best for the show, even if it means taking a chubby, I will suck it up.

Now, who wants a banger in the mouth?

  • amj

I totally agree, as much as I like to think I would love to see a movie I worry that it wouldn’t be what I want as a fan. I love AD and would have loved a 4th season but the show was almost perfect and reruns are still hillarious.
