Image Credit: CBCOur favorite Canadian time-travel relationship drama, Being Erica, finished out its second season with another mind-bending, game-changing finale last night — specifically with (SPOILER ALERT, except it won’t even make sense if you didn’t watch) Erica choosing a mystical door among many mystical doors to walk through. Not as explosive as the first season’s Dr. Tom-has-been-replaced finale, but close. The idea: Time-travel-powered therapist Dr. Tom presented her with a (rather lovely) walkway lined with (rather lovely) distinctively different doors, and nothing else. He told her to choose. This baffled her as a choice with zero context. At first, she just followed him through the door he chose, which led to his office. But by the end of the episode — having made terrifically bold personal life decisions, like starting her own publishing company and leaving true-love Ethan, who didn’t support her dreams — and then she chose a door. We won’t know what’s on the other side unless there’s a season 3, which my behind-the-scenes sources tell me is in the works up north of the border but has yet to be officially announced for pick-up by home network CBC (and thus SOAPnet, stateside).
I have a few theories about what could be going on with this new door concept, namely: 1. She’ll end up in some sort of therapist-with-special-powers training program that would make her a future Dr. Tom to someone else. Or 2. Next season will be structured differently, with Erica perhaps able to explore different life choices and their outcomes, Sliding Doors-style. Maybe this time she chose the life where she starts the publishing house and breaks up with Ethan (the manuscript that prompted her and Julianne to branch out on their own, after all, was called The Purple Door); maybe another episode she could see how things would go if she, say, wrote her own book. Or settled down with Ethan and had babies.
What do you think, Being Erica fans? Any theories? And would you like to see it back on SOAPnet for a third season? Duh, of course you would, so how about: How much would you like to see it back on SOAPnet for a third season?

I love this show! Hopefully a 3rd season is on its way soon. I like the idea of exploring different life choices. But I hope Ethan comes back!
It’s really a great show. The concept is different, but includes a lot of the elements that make television shows interesting. I hope it’s back for a third season! What a great finale.
bring it back for more!!!
I’ve been wondering if there will be a season 3 and certainly hope there will be. I saw the finale months ago as I live in Canada and think the 3rd year she will find herself working her way back to being with Kai. Erica and Ethan are just not a good match.
I think we were being told Ethan was not Erica’s match dating back to that episode when they visited the sex club (for work research) and he wouldn’t even kiss her in public….
now Kai…
Kai’s perfect for her. twas heartbreaking when he didn’t know her anymore.
I think this show is totally sweet and entertaining and relatable. I was really glad that Erica didn’t choose the easy route and stay with Ethan and let him guide her life. And I’m extremely hopeful that the show gets picked up for a 3rd season. My curiosity is piqued! Come on!
More, more, more Erica! As for what the door meant, I think she’s on her way to being a therapist. She was kinda already acting as Kai’s therapist in the final episode.
This show gives me hope that intelligent, thoughtful comedy-drama is an art form that still has legs. It’s a shame it doesn’t get the fanfare it deserves
I thought it wasnt being renewed for a 3rd season as it wouldve been an announcement by now hasnt it been nearly a year since season 2 finished filming ?
Great to see positive comments about this hidden gem!
Ceri, there is no “official” word, but Season 3 looks hopeful. Trust that Jennifer will break the news right here when they make a decision.
And I think they finished filming season 2 sometime last September or October.
I love this show, and I feel that it really hit its stride in the second season. I really like how much focus this season had on Dr. Tom (the episode where he went back to redo things with his daughter was AMAZING). I hope next season brings about more time travel (for Erica) andmore Kai. They were electric together, and it broke my heart when he didn’t remember her! I don’t want to see Erica as a therapist because I don’t want to lose Dr. Tom; he really holds the show together. He makes it poignant and philosophical, whereas Erica can border on cheesy and cliche. Still, I love her, and this show!
I agree with Alex on not wanting Erica to have taken the “becoming a therapist” door, not yet. I don’t think that just because she made some bold decisions that would mean she is “ready”. That isn’t her dream anyway, she wants to be a publisher. Give her at least a season to try, then we’ll see what happens. And as for the Ethan/Kai dilemma, I agree that there was great chemistry with Kai. But I don’t see that that is enough for them to make it happen. There are people in your life that while there are definitely fireworks, they aren’t the right one for you. Just like she realized Ethan wasn’t right for her either.
I have NEVER been a fan of a show like this, but being a single 32 year old with plenty of my own regrets, I immediately connected with Erica’s character. I really do hope Season 3 is going to be announced soon.
I’m with you in the sense that Erika’s not “ready.” But as season 2 progressed, we got to see that Dr. Tom still has a relationship with Nadia, who is very clearly his therapist, though they never come right out and say it. And just because she wants to be a publisher doesn’t mean that she can’t b e a therapist to someone as well. It’s not like it’s a 24/7 meeting with Dr. Tom, right?
It could be interesting to include someone else’ story in there, but I have a feeling that won’t happen. The show’s called Being Erika, and having it about someone else’ story wouldn’t be true to the title.
I’m not a fan of her relationship with Ethan OR Kai. Ethan didn’t understand how to take risks, and wasn’t supportive. He could do whatever he wanted (like the latenight date with his laptop), but shot down any idea Erika had. And Kai was a ticking timebomb with too many issues to want to start a relationship there, well at least in my experience.
I’m with you though, Alex and ielle! This show is relatable, and NEEDS to come back! PLEASE CBC!
LOVE this show! such a wonderful episode, i really hope it gets renewed!
my theory- which i hope is wrong- is that they are either dead or in a coma… both erica and kai tried to end things and we saw dr. tom jump off a building… they go back and learn and then become therapists.
all i know is i want more of this show!
Watching this show is a true guilty pleasure for me! I will really miss my Being Erica episodes until next year, I don’t think I could handle if they cancel. I need to know what happens to her!!
Unfortunately, I wouldn’t hold my breath. This is the CBC we’re talking about. It would be so like them to cancel one of the few successful shows they’ve ever had. Maybe they can take some money out of the budget for Don Cherry’s suits to save it.
I agree. CBC has already renewed all it’s other shows. It’s ridiculous that they are taking so long to give word on a season 3. If it’s going to happen they’re going to have to start filming really soon…
Love the show love the cast. Hope there’s a season3!
We miss you Erica!!! I am Canadian and the CBC better not disappoint and not re-new a Season 3, its one of the best shows to come out of CBC for a loooooong time!
Im not Canadian but I love this show I really hope they bring it back for another season it would be a shame not to
