Image Credit: Everett CollectionMike Fleming of Deadline reports that Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist director Peter Sollett is in negotiations with Marvel Studios to helm the film adaptation of Runaways. No, not that The Runaways. I’m talking about the comic book series penned by Y: The Last Man genius Brian K. Vaughan.
I have never read the comic book series, but I’m intrigued by the project, mostly because it’s being described as “The Breakfast Club with superheroes.” I’m now imagining what kind of stupid human trick Molly Ringwald could have pulled off with a tube of lipstick had she possessed telekinesis in addition to her other cleavage-centric talents. I would have been so much more impressed! (But then again, there would have been no movie, since the Breakfast Club kids would have just walked through the library walls to freedom, no?)
Either way, Sollett seems a smart choice, since Nick and Norah proved he could pull off angst. But will there be enough Vampire Weekend to fill out Runaways‘ soundtrack? Of course, there’s still the cast to consider. Which young actors do you think would good fits for Nico, Chase & Co?

I don’t think that this should be turned into a movie. Unless it’s actually written by Brian K. Vaughn. After the latest arcs that have been nowhere near the beginning arcs, this project could be ruined very quickly by writers who think they know how to handle this.
Wow, a smart director with a smart comic book property and the scary/exciting thing is this is becoming less rare than it used to be. Considering The Dark Knight/Batman Begins, Iron Man (and its sequel), Kick Ass, Stardust, Coraline and a bunch of projects in the works, comic book derived and/or genre properities (OK, Coraline wasn’t a comic book but it was by Neil Gaiman) are becoming the best put together projects in Hollywood. Sure there are misfires, but overall, the track record is getting better. Who would have figured? It wasn’t that long ago comic book projects were treated like illegitimate stepchildren regardless of how much money they made.
BKV has actually drafted a script for them. I reckon with him involved this could be awesome!
NO. No no no. Oh, please no. I love the Brian K Vaugh run, and…no. This should not be “The Breakfast Club with superheroes.” Unless he’s writing the script, I want nothing to do with it.
Agreed BKV needs to write it. I think the key is who plays Molly, Gert and Chase – they’re my fav characters.
YES! Well, maybe. A cautious excitement.
BK Vaughan is my favorite comic writer (Y: The Last Man should be read by every man, woman & child when they turn 16. even before that, if they can handle comic nudity and/or some hella mature and awesome themes) and The Runaways (at least the ones that he penned) were the way that teen superheroes should be. The Runaways gave those pesky Teen Titans and moody teen X-Men a run for their money. And the greater-than-great twist at the end of the first arc? BK Vaughan, I trust your judgement on this project, but if it’s even half of what the comics are…I’ll be okay.
i agree with what everyone is saying here. BKV needs to write the script- that poor series has gone on a very depressing dive since he left
