Image Credit: Bourne: Jasin Boland; Everett CollectionThe only thing you may remember about 1993′s Three Musketeers was bad Chris O’Donnell hair and the love theme “All for Love” by Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart, and Sting. But block it out. According to The Hollywood Reporter‘s Heat Vision blog, Doug Liman is now in negotiations to direct an adaptation of the swashbuckling Alexandre Dumas novel for Warner Bros., which will compete with the film Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil) has been prepping for Summit. The trade says Liman’s film would likely be in 3-D, and will be produced by Lionel Wigram, who worked on Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes update. What do you think?
Taking into account the levels of cleverness Liman is capable of (The Bourne Identity, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Swingers, Go) — and bearing in mind the tagline from the 1993 film, “They’re Scoundrels, Playboys, Outlaws…The Greatest Heroes Who Ever Lived” — I’m in. And ready to talk casting. Suggestions? I’m thinking Sons of Anarchy‘s Charlie Hunnam…

I’ll see your Charlie Hunnam and raise you Gerard Butler – scoundrel, playboy, thumbs-up-yer-bum outlaw
I enjoyed the 1993 version of The 3 Musketeers, I mean you have to take it for what it’s worth: it was a Disney interpretation and was played as much for laughs (hello Oliver Platt!) as it was for it’s story. It had a great cast for the most part, and how many of them now are doing bigger and better things? Kiefer Sutherland, Charlie Sheen, and now even Chris O’Donnell on NCIS: LA!
Agreed. Loved the 93 version. Lots of fun dialogue and humor, with some good action, too (on so many levels…hello Gabrielle Anwar!)
uugghh not looking forward to this
Gerard Butler, Viggo Morteson,Ewan McGregor.
I’d watch that.
good combination
I agree! I’d like to see Viggo do something kind of fun after “The Road.” Love Ewan and Gerard, too!
As long as Dougie Liman’s gets the nod over Paul W.S. Anderson’s, I’ll be ok. I’ve generally enjoyed all of Liman’s movies.
Jeremy Irons, John Malkovich, Gérard Depardieu, Gabriel Byrne.
Dude, it doesn’t get much hotter than Malkovich, Byrne, and Irons….hmmm…Irons…
They were the best. I still get chills everytime I watch the ending of Man in the Iron Mask! And Sarsgaard as Malkovich’s son was so on point. They have the exact same voice!
Been done – Man in the Iron Mask. The guys in the new movie(s) should be younger. I like the idea of Charlie Hunnam. Other possibilities – Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Chris Pine, and Jim Sturgess.
Hunnam, Alexander Skarsgaard and Jonathan Rhys-Myers.
I like it!
I think I will stick with the 1970′s Three Musketeers (two films) directed by Richard Lester, starring Oliver Reed, Richard Chamberlain, Frank Finlay, and Michael York. There was also a sequal starring an older Michael York as a daughter who was a sword fighter. Those Three Musketeers movies were great.
I also hate 3D and I think it is an overrated gimmick that should be restricted to Disney Parks.
It’s not a gimmick anymore than sound or Colour or even cinemascope. Like all movie tools poor directors and greedy / short sighted studio suits can abuse it.
Used correctly then, like lighting, surround sound mixing, colour, no colour, etc enhance any viewing experience. There’s no more bad or average fillms in 3D than there are in colour or shot 35mm or 70mm, green screen and so on. It’s the best cinematic enhancement / improvement for a couple of decades at least; but like Greenscreen, CGI, Morphing, The Reverse Zoom, wire-fu steadycam & bullet time (a genuine case of a gimmick that was overused and very limited) 3D can and will be abused by poor to average directors or poor to average producers. Don’t let the lowest common denominator sour you on an important advance. After all synchronised sound was seen as a gimmick and a backward step in cinema, creating a language barrier and a hinderence to several forms of acting that relied on a lack of sound; particularly in Japan.
Matt Damon. Robert Downey Jr. Ewan McGregor. Those would totally be my 3 Musketeers. Mmmm…
I like! I like alot.
I really enjoyed the Disney version of Three Musketeers, even though O’Donnell’s hair was really bad looking!!
but why are they making all these movies in 3D, it is destroying the way movies are meant to be seen!
Sorry but the MGM version is still the best. I adore Tim Curry but no one can top Vincent Price as Cardinal Richelieu and Gene Kelly was a revelation as D’Artagan. His athleticism was put to good use in the stunts, he could be light-hearted but also positively chilling when he reads the means for Lana Turner’s execution as Milady DeWinter.
The ’70s and ’90s versions were fun, and I did enjoy Irons, etc. in Man in the Iron Mask but the MGM version is still the gold standard.
This version is probably my favorite too, excellent acting and action. I will admit to enjoying both of the more current versions as well- it’s a classic story that handles re-telling well, if it’s done right.
Charlie Hunnam all the way. I have no doubt that he would make that film. He can do no wrong in my eyes.
Kyle Schmid would be perfect as D’Artagnan. He has recently done several movies: The Thaw, Joy Ride 2, Gravy Train, etc. but his best role was that of playing Henry Fitzroy in Blood Ties which aired on lifetime. Even though the show has been off for a couple of years, it continues to garner new fans by word of mouth. This young actor may not be that well known but he certainly has the acting chops to carry off this role.
Gerard Butler and Viggo Mortensen are good, Robert Downey Jr. as the 3rd musketeer – and Canadian actor Kyle Schmid would be an awesome d’Artagnan!
Kyle Schmid should play d’Artagnan, most definitely! He has proven he’s got the acting chops with his portrayal of Henry Fitzroy in Blood Ties. He would make a great swashbuckling hero.
