Image Credit: Bob Mahoney/The CW I’m at a really good place with The Vampire Diaries. I think about it for the hour that it’s on (and the hours it takes me to recap it afterward) and then I go about my life until the next time it airs. The result: Each episode has the opportunity to surprise me, and usually does. I figured that Matt’s mother, Kelly, and Damon would end up making out, of course, but even then, my TV had my back: The closed captioning came on for some unknown reason to give me the gift of reading the stage direction “[Panting]“. I may now have to watch it in closed captioning every week.
So, we had two huge developments last night: First, we found out that age trumps abs when it comes to vampire strength, and Pearl is a total badass. She and Anna paid Damon a visit because Pearl — who’s keeping the other vampires that escaped from the tomb under house arrest so they can learn how to use a remote control and text — knows Damon has the trust of the secret council and wants him to tell her everything he knows about it: a list of members and their families, who has vervain. She wants to rebuild the home that was taken from them. She was willing to offer Damon her help in finding Katherine in exchange, but Damon wasn’t interested in being her minion. She said it was non-negotiable and shoved her fingers into his eye sockets. “I have 400 years on you, little boy,” she said. “I’ll rip you from limb to limb without even blinking and you know it.” I don’t enjoy seeing Damon bleed, but I do enjoy seeing him have a worthy opponent. This is gonna be all kinds of fun.
Damon went to the Grill to nurse his wounds, and that’s when he met Kelly, who was supposed to be interviewing for a bartender position. The manager stood her up, so she was more than happy to get hammered with Damon. Especially once Aunt Jenna showed up. Matt, Caroline, Stefan, and Elena were also at the Grill on a “normal” double date, and Frederick and Bethanne — two vampires violating Pearl’s no-trips-to-town policy — stopped by as well. Frederick called Elena “Katherine,” and I have never been more proud of Elena than when she typed that in a message on her phone to show Stefan rather than speaking it to him, which Frederick would’ve overheard. He left before Stefan could get a good look at him, but he’d found out from drunk Aunt Jenna where the Salvatore brothers live. (Anyone else find it weird that Aunt Jenna laughed at Frederick’s hard sell — “I”m pretty sure you’d like it” — instead of being instantly freaked out? Was it just because she found him hot? “Hot” buys men a few seconds before they become creepy?) Pissed that the Salvatores (read: Stefan) had supplied the food supply with vervain, Frederick and Bethanne later attacked Stefan and Damon in their home. Stefan ended up staking Bethanne and Frederick fled. Stefan remembered them from 1864 and the tomb. “Yeah, about that…” Damon said. Ha. I’m just glad he’s telling Stefan. You know I love seeing the Salvatore brothers stand united. It’s gonna be tough though watching Frederick torture Stefan, as he was shown doing in the preview for next week. He wants to payback Stefan back for getting them locked in the tomb before he kills him. I’m not really worried, seeing as how the show wouldn’t survive without Paul Wesley’s bare torso.
As exciting as that storyline is, I’m even more intrigued by Jeremy wanting to be turned into a vampire! I did not see that coming. Personally, I don’t think anyone who has to go into a chatroom and ask “How do you become a vampire?” and “How do you kill a vampire?” deserves to be turned. I know he’s young, but COME ON! If Interview With a Vampire and bad Paula Abdul jokes exist in his world, so does the vampire craze. If he’s so interested in vamps, wouldn’t he have put on a freakin’ Buffy repeat by now? Somehow, Jeremy smartened up. When Anna dropped by to tell him she and her mother were staying in town, he sliced his hand making them a sandwich so she would have to be near his blood. She finally shoved him against a wall and he said, “Go for it.” He wanted her to drink from his hand, which she did. I feel like that could’ve been a sexier scene, but the show held back either because they’d already pushed the CW censors with Damon and Kelly climbing the walls or because they want to leave Jeremy and Anna some place to go…
Anna bolted when Aunt Jenna came home, but came back later to find out why Jeremy risked baiting her. He said it was because he thought Vicki had become a vampire, and if he could prove they exist, he could hold out hope that she was okay. And because he wanted Anna to turn him. Why do you think that is? Because he wants to find out who turned Vicki, kill him, then spend eternity with her? [Insert eyeroll.] Do you think Anna will want to do it? Something tells me Pearl will be against it.
Other than that, we got a lot of Caroline and her insecurities about being Matt’s “backup girl.” I hope we can move past that now that Matt has told her he may reminisce about his past with Elena, but she’s the only one he wants to make out with in Stefan’s sports car. I feel like we’re being set up by having Matt and Stefan be such decent guys with one another. Matt finally sees that Stefan is good for Elena and makes her happy, Stefan acknowledges that he’s one of those guys who turns others guys off because he seems to have everything (“What a dick”) — and what? Soon Matt will find out that Damon turned Vicki into a vampire, and Stefan staked her, and the battle lines will be drawn? Stefan and Damon vs. Jeremy, Matt, Alaric, and possibly Bonnie (should she ever decide to return)? Not sure how Kelly works into all this? I don’t see her becoming the responsible adult Matt wants her to be. Will she end up vampire food (possibly to save Matt from a vamp — that would be redeeming)? Maybe something else Matt will blame on Damon even though he won’t have been the one who drained her?
Your turn. What did you think of the episode? What was your favorite line? I vote for Damon’s “Could you help me out a little bit?” to Stefan as he was struggling to move Bethanne’s body after Stefan’s goodnight phone call with Elena — the one in which they discussed how great it was to have a “normal” evening. Speaking of that, the idea of wanting to be “normal” was central to Buffy, and part of the reason why that show was so great — it’s normal for some guys to turn into jerks after you sleep with them, so why not make Angel turn into a jerk after he sleeps with her because of a curse that said he would lose his soul if he ever experienced a moment of true happiness? That subtext worked for Buffy because she was a normal teen who attended high school, or at least hung out in the school library with her watcher Giles. If this show wants to pretend that Elena wants to be a normal teen, it’ll have to set some major scenes involving her at the school again. I’m not saying they need to go that route: I’d actually prefer they keep the action away from school grounds so it stays soapy and Damon-filled. You?

Good episode. My favorite small moment was Jeremy and Elena brushing their teeth together hiding their secrets from one another.
loved that bit!!
I liked that part too!
How awesome would it be for James Marsters or Sarah Michelle Gellar to guest star in an episode? Seriously, someone get on that.
Uh, no. There’s already too many Buffy comments/comparisons (and yeah, I was a big fan of the show but it’s been over for years). There were vamps before Buffy and there are vamps afterwards–and Diaries did start as a book series. How ’bout the changes there?
As big of a BTVS fan as I am, gotta agree with Christie. This show has a lot to stand on by itself and it doesn’t need the novelty of stunt casting, as cool as it might seem.
the vampire diaries is unique I agree.
i think it would be awesome if james marsters and sarah michelle gellar guest starred, but its not a part of the book its based on.
I absolutely love this show! Ian Somerholder has found his signature character. Damon is so freaking hot and cool. You can’t help but love him even though you should hate him. Feel sorry for Matt b/c his mom is such a B****. Curious to see where they go with Jeremy. Frederick was creepy. Not looking forward to the torture episode next week but Damon will get to come to the rescue. This show just keeps getting better. Where is Bonnie?
Total agree with you about “Damon” being Ian Somerhalder’s signature character. He embodies everything that Damon is in the books, but with even more charisma and a devious swagger!
I agree with you too Mandi!! I want to have all episodes Damon-filled!! Jeremy wanting to be turned into a vamp was SOO unexpected!!!
Where is Bonnie at? And the cutest thing ever was Stefan talking to Elena on the phone and you seeing Damon in the background moving the body. I do however, want to see a little steam between Damon and Elena.
Bonnie was out of town to bury Grandma and must still be visiting relatives. And she seemed to go back and forth between living with her mom and her grandma although aren’t they Mystic Falls natives? Maybe the show’s budget just can’t afford all the characters every week. I think they need to get the witches more involved.
I love this show. It gets better every week.
But I’m not looking forward to next week’s ep – not because it’s not going to be as great as usual. But because Stefan is going to be tortured, and I couldn’t even stand watching the promo. How am I going to handle the full ep?
=(
I love this show. It gets better every damn week.
But I’m not looking forward to next week’s ep. Not because I don’t think it’ll be as kick-ass as usual, but because of the whole Stefan being tortured thing. I could barely watch the promo (and that was with lots of ‘NO, Not Stefan!’), how am I going to manage the full ep?
=(
I would totally agree with you on the favorite line. And staying away from school grounds so we can see Damon all the time. I don’t know if anyone really knows the answer to this, but how old is Damon? Stefan is 17, and Damon is old enough to be an elligble bachelor/adult. Just curious. Overall, fabulous episode. Although, when Pearl was hurting Damon, I was quite worried.
In the books, Damon and Stefan were turned by Katherine at the same time. I can’t remember who is the older brother but they are close in age.
In the books, Damon is older… but I’m not sure by how much
I haven’t read the books yet, so I don’t understand how Katherine could have turned Stefan and Damon before the magical compass was used to hunt down all the vampires. She couldn’t have done it after Stefan gave her away and his dad locked her in that harness, so it had to be earlier. But then Stefan and Damon would have been found out too if they were already turned, unless no one thought to check them…
I absolutely LOVE this show, but have never read the books. I understand that Katherine changed both Stefan and Damon, but I’m confused as to the timing of this. It seemed that they were still human at the time she was captured and supposedly locked in the tomb. If she was supposed to have been locked away, how/when could she have turned them? It’s the one question I keep asking myself. If it’s clear in the books, is this something that hasn’t been fully addressed in the show, or did I just miss something? Can someone please clarify for me.
I’m pretty sure in Vampire Diaries mythology, a person will be turned if they die with vampire blood in their system… so if Damon & Stefan had Katherine’s blood before she was locked away, and then died sometime after, they would become vampires. That’s why when Alaric woke up, Stefan said to him “you’ve had vampire blood”. A person who’s had vampire blood, and dies in any way, comes back as a vampire.
Damon is 23, I’m pretty sure I heard Ian say this in an interview somewhere.
And I agree with Pamela about the steam between Elena and Damon.
When Elena walked back to Stefan after the “Katherine” incident, he said “What’s wrong?” and she said, “nothing”–I screeched, “Tell him!” (Because, in a traditional soap, Elena would have NOT told him and it would have been incredibly annoying.) So I LOVED the text message! It was all kinds of smart, both for Elena and the VD writers. That type of thing is exactly what the VD writers do so shockingly well and different: write their characters SMART and logical–like real people. Also, they keep the storyline moving whereas most other shows would drag plot points out as long as possible. I continue to be surprised by VD in every episode because of this. ALSO: it’s likely Jenna wasn’t creeped out because she was really drunk (she admitted that guys are a weakness when she’s toasted).
I love the show, and have recently read the books. That makes me a little creeped out by the Matt and Caroline relationship, although I know the books are NOTHING like the show. I do love the fact that Matt and Stephan are forming a friendship. I really hope Jeremy does not get turned…
TVD has become MUST WATCH on Thursdays. LOVE it. Love Ian Somerhalder. A LOT.
Me too! I’ve loved Ian since “Young Americans”
loved the ep but have to say I’m not sure that the jeremy wanting to be turned is going to work for me. I normally love the fact that VD always keeps its plot moving- it doesn’t dwell too long on one thing- but I feel like this Jeremy plot point took a few too many giant leaps. I needed a scene where Jeremy’s memories of Vicki start coming back and he starts paralleling them with what he remembers about Anna. Also, I kind of wanted Jeremy’s second reason for wanting Anna to bite him to be “because I like you.” I mean come on dude, if you want Anna to turn you there better be something in it for her, she isn’t going to turn you so you can run off and find your ex is she, and Jeremy is seriously poorly informed if he thinks that he’ll be able to avenge viki’s death as a brad new vamp when VD lore is obviously suggesting that being older makes you stronger. Do a freaking google search Jeremy.
By the by, sticking with the whole Jeremy thing, I’m guessing that bloodychick or whatever her name was from the vamp overs chat room, is going to be appearing again otherwise why would they waste their time with all those dumb jokes and that your a believer moment…
i would have to agree with you, the whole Jeremy story line just isn’t working for me. I’m glad they’re giving him something to do, but this is a bit of a stretch. All of a sudden he’s down with vampires? And he thinks becoming one is a good idea?!?!
What Katie said.
I agree on the Jeremy leaps. I don’t really see where all of a sudden he connected Vicki to possible vampires. It would have made more sense if Damon’s glamouring started to wear off and we saw things coming back in pieces and then him making the connection. Not looking forward to Stefan’s torture scenes, even if he is shirtless.
I wasn’t sure about this storyline either, until I thought that maybe, just MAYBE, he is pretending to be interested so he can find out as much as possible about vampires to rid the town of them again like they did in 1864?
I love that Jeremy is finally having a proper storyline and him wanting to turn was unexpected but expected at the same time, IMO. As Anna said and we watched in the beginning of the show, Jeremy was lost, and slowly after Vicki’s death he finally started finding himself. And now that he’s been putting everything together he prolly is intrigued with vamps and why not have an ex-junkie get addicted to something new? Also Damon glamoured him to get rid of his suffering not just forget about Vicki. And the way Jeremy was talking about Vicki in this episode he seemed to be at peace to understanding what happened to her and that she may be okay – Not to be with her again, he moved on from that. It would be interesting to see the battle between Jeremy vs. Elena/Stefan for reasons not to turn and Jeremy realizing Elena’s connection to vamps. Hopefully Jeremy won’t turn and remain human. But altogether it makes sense Jeremy finding reason and struggling with himself to find his place.
I have to admit that I am surprised by the show. It has a strong storyline and it does move forward. The story evolves and there is always something new to look for. Good job!
I agree, I don’t know how every episode manages to satisfy, then the promo makes u want more and then the next episode doesn’t disappoint. The writers are keeping the entertainment cycle moving.
Each episode gives me just enough information and develops the plot just a bit more, making me enjoy it so much. Great episode. I loved Damons line about moving the body and WOW to Jermey wanting to get turned!
