Image Credit: Sylvain Gaboury/PR Photos; Marvel ComicsYou may remember Sebastian Stan as one of the actors mentioned some weeks back as a possibility for the title role (which wound up going to Fantastic Four‘s Chris Evans) in Marvel’s upcoming super hero movie. Well, looks like the young actor made an impression on producers, because last night The Hollywood Reporter reported that Stan, who starred in NBC’s ill-fated Kings series and Gossip Girl, is Marvel’s pick to play Cap’s sidekick, Bucky Barnes. In the comics, Bucky was a teenaged orphan who joined forces with Captain America to fight Nazis. He actually died in their final World War II adventure, but came to life, albeit with memory problems, as political assassin Winter Soldier in 2005. Stan has reportedly signed on for five or six movies, which sounds like a lot until you consider that insiders are saying Evans committed to eight additional movies, including two Captain America sequels, three Avengers movies, and three potential crossover films.
So we’ve got Evans of Human Torch fame as Cap, Stan (clip of him as GG‘s Carter below) as as his little friend Bucky, and Matrix bad guy Hugo Weaving as the lead candidate to play villain Red Skull. How do we like the way casting is shaping up for Captain America, PopWatchers?

Typo in your headline
If anyone who has any impact with this movie actually see’s what we write then this is a message for you….Double dipping isn’t good, I like my hero to be one hero in other words Chris Evans is Johnny Storm and is still in my mind as Johnny Storm so if you want me to accept him as cap you need to erase the memory of the human torch from my mind. I have no doubt that he would be an amazing cap but he was Johnny Storm and I still see him as that character so please re-cast the Fantastic 4 asap
They are going to re-boot FF4, have been playing on it since the last debacle was released in theater’s and panned by critics and comic fans alike. Evan’s was clearly the best fit for his character and the most enjoyable part of the movies and that was missed on Marvel’s part.
Not a big fan of Chris Evans as Cap but Sebastian Stan as Bucky will be great (I’m really just still upset that Kings was so great and NBC killed and am glad to see he’s getting other work).
DUMB. DUMB. DUMB.
This will be like bringing in Robin on one of these new Batman movies: CHEESY!
you obviously never read a comic before and dont understand the impact that Bucky has in Captain America’s life…
Yes I have. It worked in the Golden Age comics. Movies? I don’t think so. One problem being is that Sebastian Stan has been signed on for multiple movies. (SPOILERS) This flick is supposed to be the bridge between Cap’s origin and getting frozen at the end to be later awakened in our present time. Bucky dies during Cap’s WWII years. You could argue the point that later Cap movies might take place in WWII-era but I doubt if that’s the case. Bucky is a bit cheeseball, much like Robin is to Batman. Today’s audiences will not like it. It’s a bit “gay” in this day and age to have a boy sidekick, don’t you think?
If they took the route where he is shown in some sort of montage (like in Watchmen’s opening credits)with The Invaders or something, that might be cool. I’d actually rather see The Invaders, but will The Submariner look good on live-action film wearing a chainmail Speedo and little wings on his ankles? I think not.
I would be very surprised if Bucky appears in all the Captain America movies and Avengers movies. I think they have signed him on just so that they have the option to use him in all those movies, depending on the needs of the script.
I wish they would just go the Winter Solider route with this story line, or they have relationship like they currently have in the comics where Steve Rogers really has a lot of respect of Bucky and he isn’t some “sidekick” that needs coddling.
“[A] bit ‘gay’”?
i am confident that they will have Bucky be the nazi-killing sidekick to Cap’s pro-america propaganda tool
The Winter Solider storyline all hinges on what happened to Bucky AFTER Cap was thought dead & frozen for decades, so to suggest that storyline is just INSANE, but clearly you are a fan, so I won’t nit-pick.
I HEART Chris Evans. I have always enjoyed his roles, no matter how humorous or serious, because as a gay man, I think he’s handsome as all hell to look at, but he also has that same laid-back jockish humor that made Seann William Scott such a staple earlier this decade in first humorous films like American Pie & then later action films like The Rundown. And yes, I do admit Chris was THE BEST part of those Fantastic Four films, even if I were straight, Jessica Alba as a blonde was just SO NOT RIGHT for Sue Storm.
As for Sebastian Stan as Bucky…Bucky was important part of the original Cap mythos & continues to now hold his place in the current Marvel Universe much as Pepper Potts & Rhodey are still integral to the Iron Man stories told today, so I can understand the need to include him. I don’t think Stan is THE best choice, but he is prolly the cheapest, as any film/comic book geek fan can tell you, part of what goes into these casting decisions is locking in HANDSOME men to step into the tights & turn them into stars, and sign ‘em cheap. MY personal theory is if he is being optioned for All the Avengers films? That they are going to morph/combine Bucky into Rick Jones’ role in the early Avengers, since Rick has been noticeably absent in the Hulk films. Just a theory, but as with most comic book stories turned into 2 hour movies, I think many of y’all with agree with me on that logic! Thoughts?!?!
UGH- Find Ed Brubaker’s first Captain America story, read the Bucky portions and get back to me. Bucky was a Nazi-killing badass in those stories, that turned into the greatest badass in the current Marvel universe.
I’m not saying that Bucky wasn’t worth a flip in the comics version of Cap, but having a teenage side-kick in the movie in almost the kiss of death these days.
I’m still “iffy” on Chris Evans as Cap.
Cap is supposed to be the leader of The Avengers! Evans better bring out his balls in this role and not play is usual smug self.
Iron Man and Thor aren’t going to follow a cut-up.
I pray for no Rick Jones… THAT would be really bad
The fact that you claim to understand the importance of Bucky to Steve, and then ignore anything after WWII shows you actually know very little.
UGH, you are correct. The point of a teenage sidekick in the old days was to draw kids to the comic. Bucky is a BADDDDDD idea.
And S. Stan is far from a teenager. He was born 8/13/83, by the time this films, he’ll be mid to late 27, when it comes out at LEAST a year older. I can understand avoiding child labor laws by casting over 18, but let’s leave the late 20’s/early 30′s as young teens to the CW.
I agree as a straight woman Chris is hotttttttttt! so lets review, Chris in the cap suit
nuff said!!!
I know, right?! It’s not like the character of Bucky ever evolved past being some lame ass sidekick, or anything!
Weaving as Red Skull…Brilliant! Stan as Bucky….I can get behind that. Evans as Cap…Please, NO. As Jen previously stated he’s Johnny Storm in my eyes. Plus, I just can’t see him as Cap. But then I can’t see the other two that were apparently in the final running there either. I guess I’ll watch the movie(s) wishing that Evans was Mark Valley.
I never thought of Mark Valley as Captain America before. That’s a pretty good choice.
No, no, no. Mark Valley is the Human Target. No double-dipping in comics casting. I will never see him as anything other than the Human Target. In fact, I have trouble seeing him as the Human Target since he was “Brad Chase” on Boston Legal.
I honestly can’t believe there are people out there who have trouble with actors playing different parts. I suppose you were troubled by Bruce Wayne playing John Connor.
The problem isn’t actors having different roles (they’re actors ffs) it’s when actors do such a damn good job as a specific character (EVans as Johnny), and then they jump to another character WITHIN THE SAME FRANCHISE that has a drastically different personality.
It works for Reynolds because the characters he’s hoping between are all similar so it’s not jarring. But Evans did such a great job as Johnny, that see him do Cap is mind boggling. Because he has to be able to pull of the characteristics of Cap that has even grown people in awe of him.
I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. They went through a pretty long and extensive search for Captain America, so hopefully they picked the right person after that. And as for “double dipping,” Ryan Reynolds was in Blade, Wolverine, and now Green Lantern. Triple dipping (of sorts) but he still should do a good job. Yes, I’d have rather seen Nathan Fillion but Ryan is a good choice. In the same way, I’ll give Chris a chance at a different character.
Completely agree with you on Ryan Reynolds, but I think many fans have forgiven him cause 1. He’s SEXY. & 2. He is a honest comic book fan, hence why he seeks out those roles so passionately. Hell, I wouldn’t doubt he is the one that told his wife to audition for the role of Black widow…it prolly fulfilled a role play fantasy for him at the same time!
weird. Hugo I understand Chris I will give a chance but Sebastian? Well we will just have to see.
I am glad that theyre putting Bucky in the movie
Chris Evans as Captain America is a terrible bit of casting.
Not a bad choice for Bucky, but Chris Evans is a joke. He was the worst part of the FF films (other than the script itself) in my opinion.. I would give anything to see Keifer Sutherland in the red white and blue Cpt America role.
Kiefer Sutherland old ass, as Steve Rodger’s? GTFO.
And Evan’s was the BEST of those damn movies!! He was the epitome of Johnny Storm!
From Sutherland comment you proved you don’t read comics, so what did I expect. . .
Keifer could play Captain Canada, perhaps.
I’m with those who can’t see Evans as Cap. Cap is supposed to be a guy who (in the comics) even Thor is in awe of…Evans doesn’t have anywhere near the presence…I also think Mark Valley would be perfect as Cap/Steve Rogers…
That’s what I was thinking too. Capt. America, Superman, Wonder Woman and even Batman have this aura of authority about them. I know that Hollywood prefers to cast young actors for these roles (for the sex appeal, the buzz, and if it is a success then sequels won’t be far behind). I may not agree with it but I am resigned to it. I just wish they would pick an actor that would have a semblance of an aura of authority. Chris Evans was fine as Johnny Storm because the character was a bit playful. I just don’t see him as Capt. America.
I actually really like the way the casting for this movie is shaping up. All of the Marvel studios films have impressed me for that matter with their casting. I think Chris Evans is going to do a good job. Sure the Fantastic Four movies are subpar but he was the best thing about them and reference Sunshine and London for examples of his range. For all the people complaining about superhero “double dipping”, get over it, as more comics get the movie treatment it is going to become a common occurence.
I don’t much care for the casting of Chris Evans because I don’t think much of him as an actor at least not in terms of what he showed as Johnny Storm. Sebastian Stan I know nothing about but I never cared for Bucky sooo it really doesn’t matter who they cast. Hugo Weaving as Red Skull…now they’ve got something. It’ll probably be a big campfest anyway. All I can hope for is that it be better than Daredevil or Ghost Rider
Has Marvel and/or Evans people confirmed that Evans has the role as Captain America. I haven’t seen an official press release; moreover, Evans has been INCREDIBLY quiet since he landed the gig. No statement, no quote, no interview. Something doesn’t quite click.
No, it’s been officially announced.
Wait til he does all the press next week for his new film THE LOSERS…yet another comic book franchise for DC…funny how no one has mentioned that when bringing up the double/triple dipping…
Anyways, I HEART Chris as I already said, but yeah Mark Valley woulda been a great choice for Cap. He is definitely blonde and built big enough. Half those choices I was hearing before Chris landed the role (Chace Crawford, Jon Krasinski) were all way to skinny, and completely the wrong hair color/style to play Cap. Even if they spent months in the gym bulking up, they woulda been completely un-realistic to play Cap, but Valley does have the right look, but he may be a tad older than what Marvel wanted.
I just want to go on record as agreeing with most of the posters here… While I like Chris Evans as a performer, he is already Johnny Storm. I dont think you’d want Tobey McGuire donning some other kind of superhero diguise… its just too much.
Nothing against Chris, but please re-cast the title role!!!!
That being said, Hugo Weaving & Sebastian are spot-on. Great casting there
