Clay and Ruben to reunite; my 17-year-old self says 'Squee!'

clay-rubenImage Credit: Michael Caulfield/WireImage.comO-M-G, guys. The 2003 version of myself would be so excited right now. Apparently, Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard have announced that they’re headed out on a 17-city tour of the U.S. Holy crap — this means I have to whip out the “American Idols Live!” shirt I got when I saw them in concert for the first time! Will Ruben sing “Superstar”? Will Clay reprise his “Grease” dance? Will I flat-iron my hair in homage to the season 2 versions of Clay and Ryan Seacrest?

Are you feeling nostalgic, PopWatchers?

P.S. Are Clay and Ruben holding hands in this photo? And what do you think they’re singing?

I think these two should be touring dinner-theaters only.

    • Sally in Chicago

I agree. It’s an interesting combo, though, and if they have a good musical director (Orland perhaps, or Ricky Minor?) and a good stage director, it could be a hit.

    • renee

sorry, totally disagree. loved them on ai, have seen them both in person since, and it will be an awesome tour. if you like people who actually can sing and perform, GO GO GO!!

    • Preston

No, they don’t need to tour at dinner theaters–they need to be out there at the arenas and stadiums to do what they want.

    • linda peterson

      ugh YOU ARE A IDIOT

  • Pisces228

I’m a fan! I’ve heard Clay sing live and he has an amazing voice. Plus, he’s very funny in concert. It would be great to see Ruben in concert as well. Brings back great memories of when the talent on American Idol was at its peak.

  • UGH

I think I’ll wait another 5 years for the “Where Are They Now Idols Tour” with Ruben, Clay, Fantasia, Kris Allen, David Cook, that “soul patrol” guy, whoever the winner is this year, and “insert your favorite Idol loser here”.

    • lalo

It’s not a Idol tour. Ruben and Clay have been good friends for nearly 10 years! They want to tour together.

      • Preston

These two are very much on their own and it’s just the right time for them to perform with this summer tour. People still talk about their showdown on Idol from 2003 more than any other season.

  • redvector

Back when AI was actually good.

  • Randi

    Omg I want to go.

  • crispy

Surely this an April Fool’s joke? The only way this could get any funnier is if Justin Bieber was the opening act.

    • Crispy

      I worship Justin Bieber!

      • crispy

Another idiot trying to copy me? But yeah I really do worship him so.. anyways.

      • Matt

Awwwwwwwwwwww crispy how can you worship a teenbopper? Oh man!

      • crispy

Nah, Matt, that’s just my stalker! I can’t help it if everyone wants to be me.

      • Matt

Oh ok, the last comment you were being sarcastic, atleast I hope you were.

    • Rob

Ruben announced it on Idol last night when he also announced that Big Mike was his personal trainer.

  • Jacob

This could be a fantastic tour!!!!!

  • lauren

sorry clay..used to be a fan…you don’t insult adam lambert and you don’t tour with “the velvet teddy bear” creepy much!

    • lalala

Um, okay, Clay watched the Ring of Fire performance of Adam Lambert and didn’t like it, calling it awful. It’s called an opinion, and apparently a lot of people felt the same way about that performance. You expect everyone to like Adam Lambert, just like you? Also, what makes Clay any different from Adam Lambert, who dissed Susan Boyle, calling her awful? Oh wait, you’re probably not a Susan Boyle fan, so you don’t care if Adam “insulted” her. But then again, you’re allowed to have your opinion, and he is too. And I’m not even a Clay Aiken fan!

      • Matt

You suck! You put down Lauren for what she said yet you defend anyone’s right to thier opinion, how hypocrital of you lalala the moron!

      • Nothere

I agree. Lalala if you want to be taken seriously, well you can’t say one thing and then say another to contradict that. Plus Clay is so over that his dust has already settled and turned into clay! Get it? har har har

      • lalala

Ya, I guess you’re right. I guess someone can be allowed to hate a certain singer just because said singer doesn’t like another singer that someone likes. That someone can form the opinion that “how dare that person say one of my favorite singer’s performance is awful, so I don’t like him anymore.” But it’s sad, ’cause I would think you would not like a singer based on his (lack of) singing talent, not his opinion of other singers…

      • Terri

No lalala Matt is NOT right. Stick to your guns.

    • linda peterson

IF YOU ARE NO LONGER A FAN OF CLAYS BECAUSE HE HAS A OPINION, THEN YOU WERE NEVER A FAN TO BEGIN WITH. BY THE WAY ADAMS VERSION OF RING OF FIRE MADE MY EARS BLEED.

  • grace

Clay is a great singer and entertainer but I’m not sure about Ruben. I wish them success but I won’t be attending any of these concerts.

    • Sally in Chicago

Ruben just toured with Aint Misbehavin, I’m sure his “acting” and entertaining skills are top notch.

  • Dean

    You’re only 24? Aww.

  • Stacy

I would have loved this when I was 13. Now, not so much. (But I still listen to “Invisible.”

  • Bobby’s Robot

It’s worth it just to see what Kathy Griffin has to say about it.

  • susan

This is going to be good!
    2 great entertainers.

    • jslost

Now they just need to add Kimberly Locke to the tour. : )

      • Preston

Please get Kimberley Locke on the tour! That would be triple the excitement! I played all three of their albums–Clay, Ruben’s albums of 2003 and Kim’s 2004 album on a summer road trip to Las Vegas in 2004. They got their albums out immediately back then. If they could get Kim to do a couple of dates, that would be fun too!

  • evan

Ruben was a special guest for Clay’s PBS special taping last month, and everyone who went to the show called it the “OMG Concert” because the music was simply incredible. Don’t doubt, these guys can sing. People will be in for a great night of music and laughs.

  • wg

2003 reaction to Idols summer tour: I don’t want to have to sit through Ruben to see Clay. Pass until Clay’s solo tour.
    —–
2010 reaction: See above with added annoyance at Clay’s jealous comments on the Glambert. Until I hear a genuine grown-up apology for the latter churlish behavior, Clay won’t be getting my concert money and Glambert will.

    • Matt

That “glambert” has a name idiot……try it!

      • Nothere

What is glambert’s name? I must be an idiot because I am confused. Oh well.

    • lalo

How about when Adam gives an apology to Clay? Clay did apologize to Adam.

    • lalo

Ummm didn’t Adam make a number of comments about Clay Aiken? So I should hate on Adam? That’s how you think? OK I will act like a kid and do just that. It’s over Adam I will never support you again.

      • Terri

NO NO NO! Lalo Clay did make the comments about Adam first, so I guess Adam just defended himself.
