'American Idol' Exit Q&A: Didi Benami on her 'uncomfortable' moment with Ryan on stage

DidiImage Credit: Frank Micelotta/FoxDidi Benami used her distinct voice and singer-songwriter style to crack the top 10 on American Idol. But in the end, Benami was the third girl in so many weeks to get voted off the show. In a phone interview with EW.com, 23-year-old Benami talks about what went wrong, her awkward moment with Ryan Seacrest during Tuesday night’s show, and her plans to record the music penned by her friend Rebecca Joy Lear, a fellow singer-songwriter who died in a car accident in 2005.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: So, here we are. I can honestly say I didn’t think you’d be the one voted off after Tuesday night. What do you think happened?
DIDI BENAMI: I don’t know. America voted. [Laughs] I know that I gave it my all during every performance. I will say that. I won’t say that Tuesday was my best performance, and I definitely wanted to come back with Beatles week, but it’s okay. This is a great platform for me, and I get to go on tour and do a record – which, eventually, it’s going to happen. I’m excited about all these things. And I get a little bit of time in between to rest, which is really nice. That’s what I was counting on, ”Well, at least I can just sleep at some point.” It’s been a really amazing experience, and I’m content. I would have liked to make it further, but, you know, life happens.

Your performance, like you said, wasn’t bad. It just wasn’t your strongest. Do you think part of that came from the fact that it was such an emotional song for you?
It could have been. It wasn’t really my week there in general. I’m not really R&B. I really didn’t know what to do with the theme. It would have been way cooler for me if it was Beatles week. I think I would have been able to do much better with that than with what I was given. But you gotta do the best that you can with what you have. It was my week to go, as much as I hate to say it. At the end of it all, I felt it coming a little bit. I was like, ”Okay, I know I’m going to be in the bottom three. I hope I don’t go home, but if I do, I have to be prepared to go.” All in all I think I got a lot from the experience. I’m glad to have met the people I did.

What are your thoughts about your exchange with Ryan Seacrest on Tuesday night? Some viewers weren’t happy about him being so persistent in trying to get you to talk about your tragic, personal connection to ”What Becomes of the Brokenhearted.”
I don’t think that he had bad intentions… It was a little uncomfortable for me because I wanted to convey a message through the song, not through a conversation. My conversation was the song. It was an emotional piece for me, and I was just trying to do what I could with the theme. You know, I just didn’t [sighs loudly] necessarily want to talk about it. I didn’t want to break down on stage again. It was already enough that the mentor shoot was as emotional as it was. I was frustrated because it was like, every time I had a moment there were cameras all the time, and I’m a strong person. I’ve been through a lot. It’s just that right when something happens, they’re ready right there with the camera. It’s not like I’m the only person with emotions, but you know, I’m me at the end of the day. I’m a human being. We all are, and I think that I did the best that I could. It was tough, and it was uncomfortable Tuesday night. I think that I reacted in a way that I should have. I didn’t want to talk about it. Bottom line. I wanted to get it over with and go, you know? It was tough. It was hard and there was nothing I could do to change what he said. So, it sucked.

I was really sad to see another girl go because there were such high hopes for the girls this season. Why do you think they’re dropping like flies?
You know, I don’t know. You’ll have to ask America. You know, it’s tough because I think sometimes people start off with really high expectations, and all we can do is give each performance our best. That’s all we’re doing and a lot of us were getting sick. It’s tough being under so much pressure and trying to do your best in a very short amount of time and give your best performance. I don’t know. [Sighs] I hope my girls are going to hold up the fort and you know, get through the next couple of week because I want them to.

It can’t just be a boys’ show.
It can’t. I totally agree with you. I think they’ll be fine. I think there are three really strong ladies left in the competition, so I look forward to seeing what they do.

I know how Idol usually is, but it was interesting to me, in this case particularly, how one not-so-good night affected your voting number so much.
I found that interesting too. You know, that sucked. [Laughs] What can I say? I feel like everything happens for a reason, and I wish it hadn’t gone down that way. But it did and there’s nothing I can do to change it. I’m just okay with it. I hope to come back strong.

What are your plans for after the tour?
I definitely want to get into the studio and write and record some music. I definitely want to record some of Rebecca’s music. There was some stuff she did that she didn’t get out there that I really wanted to do. That was really kind of the point of me doing this whole thing. I’ve also gotten to know myself better throughout this whole experience and just living in L.A. in general and working with music, it’s been very therapeutic for me. I needed it. Along the way I’ve been finding myself. I’m deep and I like to convey that. I don’t want to be just another girl who sings some songs.

What about Rebecca’s music stands out to you so much?
She has really amazing lyrics in her songs. You’re caught up in this game of life/There’s no time to close your eyes/You gotta keep moving forward, gotta keep up with the crowd/If I rest for a moment I might get left behind. What she was writing about really spoke to me in a way that so moved me. It inspired me to pursue a career in music. I want to do that for other people. I want to do for them what she did for me. That’s really important. That’s what a lot of really great artists have done for people, just be an inspiration and kept them going when they didn’t have hope or know where they were going and didn’t know what to do.

What song did you just quote?
It’s called ”No Destination.” There’s a song called ”Shoot the Moon” that’s really inspiring. There’s a song called ”Journey” and ”Lullaby.” Those are all wonderful songs that have kept me going, and those are ones I want to record for sure. I definitely want people to hear her music more than anything. I think she had a lot to say. I also have a lot to say. [Preview more songs at Rebecca's website.]

Was she a lyricist or a singer, too?
She was a singer-songwriter. She was a really amazing person, so young.

While we’re on the subject of people who inspire you, do you look up to any past Idol contestants?
I really look up to Crystal [Bowersox]. I mean, she’s still on the show, but I think she’s very true to herself, and I like that about her. I love that she stands up for herself when she needs to. I think Carrie Underwood is great. I think Jennifer Hudson is great. Kelly Clarkson did an amazing job. All of them kept it going for themselves regardless of what happened [on the show]. Kelly and Carrie won, but Jennifer didn’t, which is inspiring to me because [laughs] clearly I didn’t win. [Chris] Daughtry, by the way, has an amazing career right now. I don’t know when he left, but I know he didn’t win. So that’s really inspiring for me. [Note: Daughtry placed fourth in Idol's season 5.] I’d love to have a career like Daughtry’s. I think he’s on tour right now. Daughtry and Jennifer, they still give me hope. I’m not worried about it. I think I was blessed with amazing fans and people who are going to want to hear something from me, and I want to give that to them.

Didi was robbed! I was hoping she’d stay in the competition for weeks more… We love you, Didi!

    • alicia

ugh she sucked!! she was consistently off tune

      • Tarc

        Hardly.

      • Wiley

oh be quiet, alicia! so rude!

      • Gina

Out of tune? She was consistently controlled in her vocals unlike many of the contestants.

      • eden hall

        true–she was consistently mediocre

      • buchok

oh shut aup alicia.. as if ur great… didi is such an amazing talent.. she has a voice that can move.. she’s a complete talent.. i guess your one of those urban fan who think his cute… don’t speak if you dont know what a real talent is..

      • Lauren

        DiDi is sooo amazing!

    • Girl For The Win

I agree! She wasn’t the best but the judges are to blame for her leaving this early. They have been overly harsh on her this season. There were way more awful performances than Didi’s. Plus she has a voice that is different and would be recognizable on the radio unlike a lot of the other contestants.

      • James

Apparently, it’s a style that Simond probably can’t stand, which would explain the harsh criticism.

    • brandy

I would have LOVED a Top 3 of Crystal/Siobhan/Didi. My favorites of this season are all gone. I’m just now watching because I have nothing better to do on Tuesday nights.

      • BR

If they were your top three, then two of your favorites are still around…. right?

      • Lilly

I KNOW RIGHT!!! I’ve always thought that the top 4 would be them and lee!
        I’m still schoked

      • E

You and me, both (and Slezak too, I think).

For the record, I think Ryan was trying to get her votes with a sympathy card but she wouldn’t play along. Which I totally respect–that comes off as exploitive.

By the way, I hope she gets to record some of Rebecca’s music. I like it and it seems very suitable to Didi’s voice.

    • TheTruth

DiDI was on far longer than she deserved. She was only average at best.

      • T

seriously? what do you make of Tim Urban? Katie Stevens? even Andrew Garcia? here are three American Idol contestant who has been poorly performing since top 24 and yet still ruining Idol. Yeah Andrew held quite good last week, but he certainly got quite several chances to redeem himself, sucks how one performance seems to determine ones vocal capacity..

  • Dwight Schrute

Seacrest is a creep and a major tool.

    • andrew

Ryan just wanted to give the audience a more positive note from her as to why she chose the song — he had good intentions — especially with all the negativity.

      • Gina

Andrew, do you really believe that to be true? Especially with how persistent Ryan was and with finally saying, “Didi auditioned for a reason, she sang that song for someone… and we can leave it at that.” Fox/AI like[s] their drama. These days, more than ever, the media feels they have a right to people’s personal lives. It wasn’t important for her to say why she sang the song! I can’t believe Ryan said that, there is no reasoning there. Lastly, I quote from The Philadelphia Story: “Of all the filthy ideas, coming into a private house with a camera.” Not to be taken literally in this case, of course. It’s no one’s place to share that information but her own; a person’s feelings and thoughts are theirs alone.

      • Pam

The way I see it is that Ryan realized that Didi did NOT connect with that song and did NOT let the song show her true emotions. Mostly, she sang the song fairly well, but there was an emotional disconnect. All the talk of how emotional she got with Usher, but then she showed us none. Ryan took it too far, but I think he acted with the best of intentions. This is the ONE time that we really needed Didi to get emotional, and she fell flat.

      • Shady Lady

Seacrest was sensationalizing! There were no good intentions. He is a loser.

    • mishka

Team Seacrest. Ryan wanted America to remember she auditionned for Idol in memory of her late friend. It wasn’t a bad move from Ryan, actually it could have helped her explain all the drama she put in her rendition.
She was certainly a thousand times better than Tim but she was not consistent at all. Btw she started showing frustration about judges comments and making excuses “I’m not an R&B singer, x, y,z”. I wish her the best though.

      • Kieran

Ryan did push Didi a little too hard, but I think he had decent intentions. It just turned out the Didi wasn’t ready to pimp her deceased friend for votes the way Gokey mentioned his dead wife every chance he got. Simon has been a real jerk this year. He clearly has one foot out the door, but as Ryan stated on Wed., he is being highly paid, so he should call up enough energy to at least pretend he cares.

      • Scooby

I agree, Miska! Honestly, I wasn’t sure how I felt about Didi’s voice..it definitely was different. She was able to use dynamics..that’s one thing Tim lacks…he sings in a monotone..no vocal dynamics…this whole thing reminds me of Sanjaya..a cute guy who is staying way too long because he’s cute. Hey..if I were to vote for cute, I’d choose Lee and Casey…also, about Ryan..during Hollywood Week, Didi was very emotional, and we learned that she had lost her best friend. I believe that Ryan was trying to get her to say that, to remind us of why she was so heartbroken. I guess she wasn’t up for talking about it, which is too bad. And, the judges have been just horrible this year, saying different things on different weeks and confusing the heck out of the contestants…I miss Paula, though I do like Ellen…it’s the Kara-Simon combo that I’m having trouble with..what do you all think?

  • tyler.

didi was my favorite contestant. she had an off week, which got her eliminated. (her studio version of what becomes of a brokenhearted is very different from the live version btw. it has a much more folk guitar feel, and suits her much more as an artist. i love it.)

but when she was good live, it was AMAZING. she put a lot of emotion into her singing, and she really made me feel what she sang. she sang certain songs with such believability as if she wrote the songs herself.

i think there are more things coming form her. didi, you have my undying support.

  • 4sure

The girls are being voted off because of who the voters are………….girls who like cute boys! otherwise, why is Tim still there? It’s the females who vote……..ergo: the boys stay on the show. I hope Siobhan nails it next week cuz I love her BUT the voters won’t vote for her cuz she’s a little too quirky………which is why I love her! Also: the judges rag on everyone for singing “old” songs………ummmm, how OLD is “Bobby McGee”, and most everything else Crystal has done???/ Go figure.

    • Alice

I won’t vote for Siobhan because her voice is not good. I like that she’s quirky and strange…but she hurts my head with her nasally screeching.

      • BrookieMonster

It’s different and that’s what we need, I think it’s crazy cool. If I could do that kind of stuff with my voice…it would be amazing. Don’t get me wrong I respect your opinion, but some people like the high notes she hit.
        Like me!
        And Adam Lambert!

    • Sherri

I don’t know WHY Tim is there, but honestly…WHERE do people see the ‘cute’ in him??? He cannot sing and his hair is atrocious! There is not a speck of cute in him!

      • liz

awww…Tim’s a cutie with a great attitude. He can’t sing a lick, but he’s entertaining. I’ve go no issues with Teflon Tim.

      • Mona

Sherri, I agree. I find nothing appealing about him. Cute? Not!!! He’s cheesy and I’m starting to find his smile/laugh grating. Didi IN Tim OUT. And yes, he’s not that great a singer.

    • Anne Campbell

I LOVE Siobhan’s voice, but I’m with you on her screeching. It’s too much. But why is that other girl still there? I don’t even remember her name she’s so awful and smug. The little girl with the I got this attitude and long dark hair–vote her off.

      • Mona

I love Siobhan too. She’s unique, quirky, and has a great voice. I look forward to her performance every week. But, yes, the screaming/screeching is getting old. Simon also said he’s getting bored with it. Anne, the girl you are referring to is Katie Stevens. I like “MAMA SOX.”

      • BrookieMonster

The Katie girl, she’s…okay. I don’t hate her nor do I love her. It’s just when she begs after Ryan gives out her numbers. NEVER beg, it makes her look dumb. But, Didi, I wish she was still here… :(

  • ~squigs~

do her arms look hairy in that pic or is it just me?

    • mesuda

yup, near the elbows. I just didn’t want to be the jerk who brought it up first.

      • Goober

Who cares, I’d still boff her!

  • Trisha

Why do these Idol wanna-bes continue to try to sing songs to convey a message? We don’t care about a message. Just sing what you should sing to WIN!! Then, when you record you album, you can convey all the darn messages you need to. It’s ridiculous!

    • Gina

God forbid they show us they are more than a pretty face that is good at karaoke! I personally tune in on the off chance of finding a potential artist, so I certainly care.

  • Stacie

This years group of guys don’t deserve to be there. Between Didi, Lilly Scott, Angela Martin and Katleyn Epperly, the crop of girls going home while Tim, Andrew, Aaron & Casey are still on the show is completly ridiculous. These teen girls have to open their ears and close their eyes because right now they are seeing these kind of cute guys and voting based on that. I am glad they didn’t use the Judge’s Vote on Didi, not because I don’t like her, but because with the way things are going even Crystal can be in trouble and the Judges have to help her.

  • francis von bonerzhard

the other night i noticed her arms looked way bigger than i would have expected. not being an ass, just saying. it was sorta disproportionate.

  • Grady

Sandra, this is a great interview, but does this mean we won’t get the live Idolatry interview with Slezak?

    • Seriously?

@Grady There’s usually a written interview, and the Idolatry is about a week later….

  • Carol

American idol is not about who is the most talented, which is quite sad. Simon summed it up after Tim’s performance (if you wanna call what he does a performance) He could mumble the alphabet and leave out several letters and the young girls would vote for him anyway. They are voting because he is cute to them not because he has talent and whats sad is he knows it. Thats why he did the slide across the stage. Poor Didi had the talent but boys don’t watch american idol to see which girl is the cutest.

  • DidiLover

One question I was hoping you would ask, Sandra, is “Didi, is that you singing on the promo for ABC’s HAPPY TOWN? I’m almost positive it’s her. Her voice is THAT distinctive, and the reason why I thought she should have won the entire competition. I think her fractured, emotional tone is instantly recognizable and rare. Of all of the contestants this year, she stood out to me as someone whose records I would purchase.

    • The Ween

Actually, I think Didi is one of (too) many people who are putting that jazzy affect on their voice right now. I actually liked her better when it was less prominent (like when she sang Terrified), as it didn’t feel real to me.

      • DidiLover

I will grant you that, but at least it’s a current voice that can find a place on the charts today. Can’t say the same about the large majority of the remaining contestants:

Crystal Bowersox = Old School Janis Joplin meets Melissa Etheridge

Katie Stephens = Beauty Pageant Circa 1982

Casey James and Lee Dewyze = growly Nickelback rehash (although nicely done nonetheless)

        Tim Urban = Bobby Sherman

Michael Lynche = Luther Vandross meets the unsigned Ruben Studdard

Siobhan Magnus = Bjork without the Swan Dress (yet)

Andrew Garcia = I have no idea, and I’m willing to bet that neither does he.

Aaron Kelly = early 90s boy band

      • candacetx

@theween, you called it exactly… but then again @didilover, you’re on the nose as well…. sigh… I’m conflicted. oh well.. buh-bye.

  • jdaniels

I hope she gets a chance to become a real artist and make a great album!

  • jj

Remember when you were 10 or 11 girls?

They shouldn’t be allowed to vote on American Idol.

  • Quirky

After Didi said her goodbyes I deleted American Idol from my PVR schedule. I’m now done for good. I can catch Crystal’s clips on Youtube and avoid the rest of this train wreck.

    • Eva

      My exact feelings!!

    • catwoman

my thoughts exactly – except I also want to continue to see what Casey does. Those three are (were) my faves.

  • Mel

Argh. Didi seriously shouldn’t have gone home. She was too good. And her performance on Tuesday was NOT bad. It was actually very moving – almost made me cry. I am loving Tim mroe and more but let’s face it…he is not winning this. Katie has an amazing voice, but she has no idea how to use it – Katie and Tim aren’t winning this. Didi had a serious shot in the Top 5. I have no idea what happened. Argh. I love you Didi! Make an album! I’d buy it!

    • didiSHOULDN’TgoneHOME

      definitely!
