Mini Doc Jensen: 'Buffy' meets 'Lost' PLUS: More thoughts about 'Ab Aeterno'

Filed under: Lost, Television and tagged: ,

lost-ab-aeternoImage Credit: Mario Perez/ABCYou know me and Lost: Almost every episode gets my mind whirring and my theory-making machine churning. But “Ab Aeterno” has been exceptionally inspiring. I’ve been thinking about a number of things since Tuesday, including this observation that was brought to my attention by my Totally Lost co-host Dan Snierson: While the Jacob of 1867 preemptively thwarted Richard’s assassination attempt, the Jacob of 2007 all but walked into Ben’s knife in last year’s season finale. Since we now know that Jacob is more than capable of defending himself, we have even more reason to wonder if Jacob wanted Ben to kill him and if everything on the Island is more or less going according to Jacob’s plan. 'FlashForward' recap: Some blowback for 'Blowback'

flash-forward-David-GoyerImage Credit: Ron Tom/ABCLast week, FlashForward returned with a cinematic, emotionally and thematically rich, mythologically substantial two-hour spring premiere. It was an impressive installment that inspired hope at least in this viewer that the under-appreciated, ratings-challenged ABC mystery drama could finish the season strong and perhaps earn another year of storytelling. But two discouraging developments have occurred since then. 1. The ratings report came out, and the numbers for last week’s sterling work represented an all-time low for the series. 2. Last night’s episode happened. It was called “Blowback.” And it kinda blew. READ FULL STORY »

'Community' vs. 'The Simpsons': Who wins this week's Hulu bracket?

Filed under: Television and tagged: ,

community-simpsonsImage Credit: Paul Drinkwater/NBC; FoxHulu’s Best in Show bracket is down to the final four: Community, The Simpsons, Lost and Burn Notice. Fight!

The drama bracket seems pretty tied up — it’s got to be Lost. But the comedy showdown is less settled: Freshman series Community beat out Glee, Modern Family, and Parks and Recreation to land in the comedy finals, while the The Simpsons took on American Dad, Family Guy and Castle. So which comedy should win? READ FULL STORY »

Tracy Morgan in a film with Juliette Binoche, Al Pacino, and Katie Holmes... wait, what?

Filed under: Movies and tagged: ,

tracy-morganImage Credit: Dave Allocca/Startraksphoto.com; Tina Gill/PR Photos; Chris Hatcher/Photorazzi/PR Photos; David Gabber/PR PhotosTracy Morgan and Juliette Binoche are in negotiations to join the cast of the cop drama Son of No One. Oh, it gets crazier: Said cast already includes Channing Tatum, Al Pacino, Ray Liotta, and Katie Holmes. Tatum stars as an officer (uniform alert!) working the neighborhood he grew up in; Morgan will play his friend (a role once occupied by Terrence Howard). The film begins shooting next week in New York City.

Is this the most eclectic cast you’ve heard of in a while, or would you like to nominate another?

P.S. How wrong is it that I’m hoping the weather in NYC warms up again soon so I don’t have to wait too long to see what pumps Suri Cruise will be wearing in this spring’s paparazzi shots?

Is there any potential situation in which you wouldn't be offended by Heidi Montag's onscreen existence?

Decades from now, when my cyborg great-grandchildren ask me when the 2000s ended, I’ll tell them it was March 24, 2010, the day MTV announced that it was ending The Hills. Whether we loved, hated, or hate-loved the glossy reality show, we all have to admit that The Hills has occupied an embarrassingly important central role in the cultural mainstream ever since its 2006 debut. Kip Williams will direct 'Paranormal Activity 2'

Filed under: Movies, News and tagged: , ,

Tod “Kip” Williams has signed on to direct this fall’s sequel to Paranormal Activity. Cue Michael from Arrested Development: “Him?” Previously, Brian De Palma and Akiva Goldsman (one of the project’s producers) had been rumored to possibly helm the sequel after Kevin Greutert couldn’t do it. (Lionsgate’s Saw 3D opens the same not-quite-haunted-yet day as the Paranormal sequel: October 22.)

“Kip is the guy we want at the helm, because he knows exactly what we want to deliver to the fans,” writes producer Oren Peli, who directed the original Paranormal. Neato. Who wants to find out what Kip Williams has done besides marry Gretchen Mol? READ FULL STORY »

'Mission: Impossible IV': Why Brad Bird should direct it

brad-bird-mission-impossibleImage Credit: Stephen Vaughan; Disney/Pixar (2)This week, The Hollywood Reporter‘s Heat Vision blog reported that Brad Bird, director of the animated Oscar winners The Incredibles and Ratatouille, has emerged as a contender to helm Mission: Impossible IV. I chatted with Bird in 2007, when EW ranked The Incredibles No. 25 on our list of the greatest action films ever. Read a few of his comments and tell me if you’re not rooting for him, too:

• “People think that the explosions are it, but the greatest special effect is caring about the character that’s going through the explosions. That’s the one that people don’t spend enough energy on,” he said. “Many movies have giant explosions, but very few of them have characters that you worry about. The best action heroes are more often than not ones who show a little bit of fear.” Bird talked about Sean Connery as James Bond — when he got in trouble, you could see his life pass before him. Same thing with Bruce Willis as John McClane in the first Die Hard, and Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones. “They let you know that they’re mortal even while they’re doing completely amazing things,” he said. “He’s not gonna die, but it’s gonna hurt.” READ FULL STORY »

What's your go-to pick-me-up video?

Turn-the-Tub-ArounddAfter the news came down that Megan Mullally had exited the cast of Broadway’s now-postponed Lips Together, Teeth Apart, what did I do to mourn? I went to get a little Megan fix via my favoritest of her non-Will & Grace performances. You know what I’m talking about: Her legendary “Turn the Tub Around” music video/commercial for I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter that came out at the end of last year. “Tal-kin’ ’bout nu-tri-tion!” I was instantly happy again. I have what’s probably not a startling confession: I turn the tub around nearly every day, whenever I need a little pick-me-up in a down moment. The whole music video/commercial is like a gay fever dream. Join me after the jump, where I’ll get to how this relates to Betty White’s (stunt double’s) legendary tumbling pass during a Golden Girls dance-off. READ FULL STORY »

'Survivor: Heroes vs Villains': James reveals how long it took him to get drunk after being voted off

Filed under: Reality TV, Television and tagged: , ,

After losing the “Hero Olympics” race against a backwards-running J.T., it was curtains for James Clement. The (former?) fan favorite had a controversial run on Survivor: Heroes vs Villains, getting into wars of words with Stephenie, Tom, and Colby, as well as tossing a bag at 50-year-old Randy after a challenge. Now, after being voted off due to his leg injury, James talks about why he does not owe Stephenie an apology, the reason his mom is so upset with the editing, and which of his three unceremonious Survivor exits hurts the most.
