'Secret Life of the American Teenager' season finale: Tackling abortion like few teen shows have

Secret-Life-AdrianImage Credit: Randy Holmes/ABC FamilyThe Secret Life of the American Teenager wrapped up its season last night with a shocker: Sex-loving-and-proud-of-it Adrian strongly suspected she was pregnant with Ben’s child after the two hooked up once in an effort to get back at their exes, Ricky and Amy (who, incidentally, have a baby from their own one-time stand, which is the basic premise of the series). Not only that, but Adrian repeatedly, eloquently, and unapologetically expressed her intention to have an abortion if it turns out she is (the cliffhanger left that open to question). “I am taking responsibility here,” she said when chastised for not doing so. “I’m not having a baby and ruining my life like Amy.” As Ben’s Christian friend Jack said upon hearing the news, “Holy Schneikes.” It was a gutsy move, to say the least — for the show as well as Adrian. 'Justified': Timothy Olyphant on what to expect this season

Filed under: Television and tagged: ,

olyphant-gogginsImage Credit: Olyphant: FX, Goggins: Robert Zukerman / FXLast Tuesday, Justified became FX’s highest-rated series debut since The Shield. The show follows U.S. Deputy Marshal Raylan Givens (Deadwood‘s Timothy Olyphant) as he’s reassigned to his native Kentucky, home of his remarried ex-wife Winona (Dirty Sexy Money‘s Natalie Zea), his criminal father Arlo (Raymond J. Barry), his high school crush Ava (Joelle Carter), and the old coal mining buddy-turned-racist church bomber/bank robber he had to put a bullet in last week, Boyd (The Shield’s Walton Goggins). Here, a few things we have to look forward to this season. SPOILER ALERT:

More Walton Goggins: At the end of Fire in the Hole, the Elmore Leonard novella upon which the pilot was based, Boyd dies. Goggins, however, was too good for the show to let go. In tonight’s episode (10 p.m. EST), we see the effect the shooting had on Boyd, and it’s not what you’d expect. The show’s already alluded to the complicated relationship Raylan has with his dad, who we’ll finally meet in episode 5. Then comes Boyd’s father. “So the boys and their daddies, it all gets rather loaded,” Olyphant says. “The second half of the [13-episode] season inevitably becomes much more serialized than the first half. The first half you’re just kinda letting these things percolate and come up. But around episode six or seven, that’s when you really feel like we’re cookin’ with gas. Toward the final third of the season is when it becomes a classic sort of Hatfield-McCoy thing where there’s lots of history between those families.” READ FULL STORY »

'Eclipse' poster: Definitely darker

ECLIPSE-onesheetThe one-sheet for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse has been released. Gone are the golden earth tones of New Moon, in are the blacks and grays of the darker third film, so serious Edward’s hair is flat and Jacob’s biceps are covered. “It all begins…with a choice,” the tagline reads. It’s Bella’s decision — the vampire or the werewolf — which explains why she’s front-and-center. I say well done, even if it looks like Edward isn’t quite looking at us. You?

John Malkovich and Frances McDormand: 'Transformers 3' just got classy!

Filed under: Movies and tagged: , , ,

transformers-3Image Credit: Hubert Boesl/DPA/Landov; DreamWorks/Paramount; GL/PR PhotosHigh-brow Oscar darlings John Malkovich and Frances McDormand have signed on to star in the next installment of Michael Bay’s Autobots vs. Decepticons saga, Transformers 3. You read that right. The very respectable thespian pair behind some of cinema’s most nerve-rattling psychos and Coen brothers heroines will spend the summer standing in front of a green screen doing their serious-actorly best to appear terrified by gigantic robots. Needless to say, that’s quite a 180 from Megan Fox. READ FULL STORY »

Steve McQueen: 20 never-seen photos of an American badass

steve-mcqueenImage Credit: John Dominis/LIFE.comWhen you think of ultra-cool Hollywood leading men, a few names immediately spring to mind — Clint Eastwood, Robert Mitchum, Lee Marvin. But the one guy who probably deserves to be at the top of that list of macho men is Steve McQueen. The bad-boy star of The Great Escape, The Cincinnati Kid, and Bullitt would have been 80 years old on Wednesday. (He died at age 50 from cancer in 1980.) To help commemorate his outlaw career on and off the silver screen, Life.com has opened its vaults and unearthed 20 candid shots taken by photographer John Dominis in 1963, right after the 33-year-old star’s breakout performance in The Magnificent Seven. Check out this batch of iconic, intimate photos of McQueen shooting guns, racing cars, boxing in the gym, swigging beer, and dancing with his first wife Neile Adams. They’re fantastic. And when you’re done checking them out, why not head to video store and program your own living-room double-feature of The Getaway and  The Thomas Crown Affair?

'American Idol' Power List: Vote for your favorite from season 9's Top 11!

Filed under: American Idol, Reality TV and tagged: ,

This week on American Idol: Guest mentor Miley Cyrus!

I know, I know, you’d been trying so hard to forget that information. But it’s no use, Idoloonies. Tonight, the young lady who parties in the USA (if not other nations), will give advice to the top 11 contestants on how to shake what your mama gave ya while standing on top of an ice cream cart, but before she does, I’m gonna take a crack at ranking our current crop of season 9 contenders. When you’re done reading, voice your own opinion in the poll and comments section below. (Related: ‘American Idol’: Catching up With 13 Former Contestants!; for more Idol coverage, follow me on Twitter @EWMichaelSlezak.)

11. Andrew Garcia (Last week No. 8 ): Featherweight interpretation of “Gimme Shelter” continued the stock-price plunge for this one-time front-runner, who has yet to deliver a stellar performance since taking the live stage. Needs a drastic shakeup — a spot-on vocal, an eye-popping style choice, and a wicked song selection all might help — to reverse his fading fortunes. READ FULL STORY »

Sissy Spacek fulfills lifelong fate of playing Rachelle Lefevre's TV mom

sissy-spacekImage Credit: Sylvain Gaboury/PR PhotosWe’re excited that Sissy Spacek has signed on for her first lead television role, even if it’s in a medical procedural for CBS. She’ll play the visionary (provided she cuts her bangs at some point) leader of a mobile team of volunteer doctors and nurses that travels the world helping those most in need. Twilight‘s Rachelle Lefevre, Skeet Ulrich, Amy Smart, Janeane Garofalo (wait, does this take place in the late ’90s?), Michael Beach, and Jay Hernandez are Spacek’s costars, and exec producer John Wells worked on ER and The West Wing, so the project seems promising. I really enjoyed Spacek’s special brand of crazy in this season of Big Love, even though the plot got so convoluted I could often barely figure out the purpose of her Washington lobbyist character other than to wear dark, patterned business suits and pop up at inopportune moments. CBS procedurals are usually not my thing, though, so I’m worried. I’d like this one to have heart, humor, and more of an edge than, say, CSI: Miami. Her character should at least wear cooler Leader Making a Dramatic Difference shades than David Caruso. Do you have high hopes for Spacek’s new series, and are you happy she’s sticking with TV?

Wait, get this: They’re currently filming the pilot in Wilmington, NC. Just like Dawson’s Creek! Forget my questioning tone. Success is certain.

Patton Oswalt talks about his 'Firefly' comic book

Serenity-comic-floatImage Credit: Dark HorsePatton Oswalt is a bigger Firefly geek than you. The stand-up comic and actor was so taken with the canceled Fox series, he couldn’t stop pestering creator Joss Whedon with questions about it on the set of Dollhouse, on which Oswalt appeared for two episodes. Instead of getting fired, Oswalt got another job out of it. He’s writing the Wash-centric Serenity: Float Out, a Dark Horse comic coming out on June 2 that picks up where Serenity — the big screen version of the series — left off.

Oswalt recently talked with PopWatch about his love for Firefly — which was clearly evident in his voice — what readers can expect in Float Out, what makes Whedon so brilliant, and why Dr. Horrible is an “asshole.”

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: I had no idea you were a Firefly fan.
PATTON OSWALT: Man, I really loved that show. It was such a bummer when it got canceled. Joss Whedon keeps creating these zeitgeist-grabbing, fun, brilliant shows that then Fox — It’s like he hands them over to an angry punk that throws them against the wall and ruins them. [Laughs] I don’t understand why he has this relationship. It’s so odd.

So you watched it when it was on Fox? You were a lover from the start?
Yes. I watched the first two episodes. This was just before I got my TiVo. They kept moving it around and I would miss it because I’d be traveling and doing stand-up. Then I watched the whole [thing] on DVD. Seeing it all like that, it made me love it. Then it made me love it defensively because at that point, it was already dead. It was like I was mourning this great thing that got beaten to the ground for no reason. READ FULL STORY »

'Castle': The 'event' is worth the hype!

castleImage Credit: Richard Cartwright/ABCCastle has a lot to live up to after the way ABC has been promoting the two-part “event” that finds Beckett, Castle, and Federal Agent Jordan Shaw (guest star Dana Delany) chasing a serial killer who’s obsessed with Nikki Heat. Last night, Part 1 did.

Just as Castle got word that Heat Wave had been optioned for a film — James McAvoy would make a great Kevin Ryan — Beckett got a phone call from a man reporting a murder. One that he’d committed. They traced the call to Grand Central Station, where they found a dead man in a phone booth. Five shots to the chest. The bullets had letters pressed into them. Castle thought they spelled “Kinki,” but Beckett reordered them to “Nikki.” Another call: The man wanted Nikki to know the next part of his message was waiting at the Central Park Carousel. Another four slugs spelling “Will.” Enter the Feds led by Delany, looking younger than she gets to on Desperate Housewives. Castle was starstruck — she’s good at her job and has cool toys that he naturally wants to touch. Watching Beckett get jealous over losing Castle’s professional interest brought humor to the episode, as did everyone finding out that Nikki and the writer tailing her in Heat Wave have sex in Chapter 11. (Note to self: Next time I’m in the book store, find Heat Wave and skim Chapter 11.) READ FULL STORY »
