John Larroquette to play lawyer (again) in Fox pilot

Filed under: News, Television and tagged: , ,

boston_legal_larroquetteImage Credit: RON TOM/ABCJohn Larroquette has joined Jason Isaacs in the Fox legal thriller pilot Pleading Guilty, based on the Scott Turow novel. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Larroquette will play the “patrician managing partner” of a high-powered law firm that recruits Isaacs’ character, a cop-turned-attorney, who investigates the disappearance of its top litigator. Translation: Probably not as wacky as his stint on Boston Legal — which ended with him and Candice Bergen in a double wedding with James Spader and William Shatner — but chances are he’ll still be pretty charismatic.

I chatted with Larroquette in 2007, when he joined Boston Legal, and he estimated that he’s played between 15 and 20 lawyers in his career (“certainly more than I’ve ever hired,” he joked). That, of course, includes the role of Dan Fielding on Night Court, for which he earned four straight Best Supporting Actor Emmys. He credited the timbre of his voice for the typecasting. He developed it in the late ’60s as a DJ on Mother Radio, an underground FM station in his native New Orleans. He himself was a musician before he became an actor: ”I was from New Orleans, so I had to play clarinet. I had to try to be Pete Fountain,” he said. ”At about 18, I realized that I could talk better than I can blow. I learned how to use my voice. You’d sit there with headphones on and you’d hear yourself.” (One of his earliest gigs was as the narrator of 1974′s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.)

There are advantages to playing lawyers, Larroquette admitted. “You get to wear better clothes than the other people,” he said. “Dan Fielding started with a three-piece button down. The suits were, for the day, some of the best you could buy. Brooks Bothers. Cassini. Luckily, being as tall as I am, 6’5”, I seem to be able to wear a suit fairly well.” (Note: He doesn’t always wear one. We also chatted about his love of the outdoors and his 45-foot motor home.)

Who else is psyched to see Larroquette suit up again, and, we hope, verbally spar with Isaacs? Which TV lawyers wear a suit well? I spoke to one today.

'How to Train Your Dragon': America Ferrera and Vikings land in Times Square

Filed under: Movies and tagged: , ,

america_ferreraEarly Tuesday morning, just as the sun was just beginning to peek out from behind those pesky spring clouds, something terrifying could be seen smack dab in the middle of Times Square. No, it wasn’t a group of tourists, the Naked Cowboy, or humans dressed as oversized animals, but instead… a Viking ship?! That’s right, it was a Viking ship, hailing from the dark foreign lands of Greenland.

DreamWorks’ newest animated creation How to Train Your Dragon hits theaters this Friday (read the EW review here). To celebrate the occasion, and conduct a wacky cross-promotional venture with Wal-Mart, Vikings filled the streets in the midst of the morning commute. PopWatch deployed me to the scene to save the city from such behemoths and play along with questions like, “Where is your long skirt?” and “Men don’t carry swords! How do they eat?” from a man named Olaf. But also to chat with America Ferrera, who provides the voice of Astrid, the butt-kicking female dragon slayer of the film.

“This is probably one of the most unusual events I’ve attended,” she giggled, looking around suspiciously. “Dealing with a Viking ship in Times Square?…Yeah.” You and me both, America, you and me both. Once we both embraced the situation (taking cues from the Vikings on how to carry a sword and properly pronounce our growls), it was easy to have fun. Ferrera talked about her role in the film and her love for animation… READ FULL STORY »

Lady Gaga's designer to launch capsule line for Forever 21: Police tape for everyone!

lady-gaga-telephoneJust when you thought Lady Gaga’s fashion was unattainable, inaccessible, or prohibited from being worn in many public places, one of the designers who helped shape the wacky yet fabulous look of her Tarantino-tinged “Telephone” video has made the art of Gaga possible for the rest of us. L.A.-based designer Brian Lichtenberg, who crafted the now-famous crime scene tape number that Gaga donned in the video, is creating a line of graphic tees for Forever 21, making it the mega-chain’s first designer collaboration.

His designs have also found fans in Beyoncé and Rihanna, though the avant-garde factor will presumably be tamed down a bit for the mass market. But even with some dilution, I’m expecting cool prints and cut-outs, and hopefully a few nods to his celebrity work. The line sounds like it’d be the perfect weekend option — just cross your fingers that you don’t cross paths with a 12-year-old rocking the same tee.

What do you guys think of the design collaboration? Are you going to get a piece of Gaga for yourself?

'American Idol': Worst performance ever?

american_idolImage Credit: Ray Mickshaw/FOXOn last night’s American Idol, Kara called Paige Miles’ rendition of “Against All Odds” the worst vocal of the season. “That song just killed you,” Simon informed Paige, who was then dead. Now, I’m not Slezak and don’t have a carefully organized (by hair color) brain database of 8.3 seasons of performances at the ready, but I dunno, Dawg — I think Paige’s warble might have been the worst Idol performance EVER. And I saw that bird dance by the blond tattoo lady last year. This was like a million billion times worse than that. Which ear-sore gets your vote for Worst Idol Performance Ever? Do you have recurring Oz-based nightmares of Camile Velasco’s sensational(ly awful) ”Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” like poor Slezak?

'Human Target"s Mark Valley on his favorite roles, the photos he wants no one to see, and wife Anna Torv

Mark-Valley-TargetImage Credit: Justin Stephens/FoxMark Valley left his bike in Vancouver. It’s there with his radio, some clothes, and hiking gear. He left the items for good luck, and, he admits, so he can playfully brag later if his show Human Target gets picked up for more episodes beyond its current 12. (”I’ll say ‘Oh, of course it got picked up,”’ he says in a faux haughty tone, ”’I left my stuff there.”’) They haven’t heard anything yet, but he’s hopeful. ”I think there’s more story to be told.” The same can be said of Valley’s personal rise to fame. Sitting down with EW.com earlier this week, Valley spilled on some of his memorable roles. And a few of not-so memorable ones…

BREAST MEN (1997)
Character: Fair-haired resident
”I always thought it was fun to do these little parts. But they weren’t little parts to me at the time, they were a big deal. It was like ‘Oh my God, I’m going to be on a [movie] on HBO, playing ‘the fair-haired intern!”’ READ FULL STORY »

Trailer: This lady is why Michel Gondry is so bizarre

thorn_in_heartIn The Thorn in the Heart (L’Epine dans le Coeur), we meet the secret behind French filmmaker Michel Gondry’s bizarre worldview: His bizarre schoolteacher aunt, Suzette. As you’ll see in the trailer after the jump, Suzette really can make her students partially invisible — it wasn’t just an editing trick in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind! France is CRAZY. She is a magical muse indeed, though her powers may have also produced nervous breakdowns and a world of pain for her son, Jean-Yves. This seems like a fascinating home-visit of the weirdest family ever. The film debuted at Cannes and enters limited release April 2. Trailer below… READ FULL STORY »

Will Smith: Pick his next film

Filed under: Movies, News and tagged: ,

Will-SmithImage Credit: Albert L. Ortega/PR PhotosAccording to Variety, Will Smith is currently debating which film to do next: Men in Black III or The City That Sailed. It’s an interesting dilemma: The Men in Black franchise has proven box office power (grossing more than $1 billion worldwide) and should attract big-name talent even if it feels like an unnecessary blast from the past, while The City That Sailed is a family film that Smith’s production company has developed that sounds intriguing but risky. According to the trade, the script, from The Truman Show‘s Andrew Niccol, centers on a New York street magician whose young daughter moves to London, finds wish-granting magic candles, and must dream of her dad being closer because the island of Manhattan starts floating toward England. (I have no idea how people respond to that in what I assume is an otherwise realistic film, which is why it could go either way.)

What do you think? Does Smith bank on the familiar for his return to the big screen, where he hasn’t been since 2008? Or does he try something new? (For argument’s sake, let’s say there’s no role for son Jaden in The City That Sailed.)

Exclusive First Look: 'Iron Man' goes extreme in brand-new motion comic

iron-man-extremisImage Credit: Marvel EntertainmentThe “motion comic” medium is still pretty new — not quite animation, it aims to bring to life the comic book page in a dynamic way. EW has an exclusive first look at Marvel’s latest foray into the budding format, Iron Man: Extremis, based on the 2006 Iron Man series by comic book legend Warren Ellis (Planetary, The Authority) and artist Adi Granov. Unrelated to the Robert Downey Jr. movie series, this story follows Tony Stark’s battle against a terrorist whose body has been transformed by a new bio-engineered serum called, naturally, Extremis. You can download the first of the six-episode series from iTunes, Zune, and Xbox Live on April 16 for $1.99 — each additional episode will come online every two weeks. (You can watch Marvel’s earlier motion comics, Spider-Woman and Joss Whedon’s Astonishing X-Men, for free on Hulu. Note: Like Iron Man: Extremis, they’re intended for mature audiences.)

After the jump, check out the premiere of the full-length trailer for Iron Man: Extremis. READ FULL STORY »

James Cameron vs. Glenn Beck: Let's get it on!

cameron_beckImage Credit: Cameron: Tony DiMaio/Startraks Photo; Beck: M. Caulfield/Getty ImagesJames Cameron pulls no punches. And he has no use for Fox TV host Glenn Beck. At a press conference to promote the DVD release of Avatar, Cameron eviscerated the conservative pundit and challenged him to a debate about the environment. The Oscar-winning director called Beck “dangerous” and his ideas “poisonous,” but he seemed mostly offended by being called the anti-Christ by Beck back in 2007, when the then-CNN host criticized Cameron’s TV documentary, The Lost Tomb of Jesus. 'Modern Family' star Sofia Vergara aims to collect from Gerard Butler, with interest

Modern Family‘s Sofia Vergara guested on The Tonight Show last night and killed. It turns out she’d met Jay Leno’s other guest, Gerard Butler, about two years ago when he was “like a damsel in distress at the Chateau Marmont” and had no cash on him to pay the valet. Vergara intervened and lent him $60, because she didn’t want him to go all night without extra money. [Insert audience Ahhh.] Now, she figures he owes her $300. [Insert audience cheers.] Butler noted that he had tried to pay her back once. “Oh yeah, when we were with people, and he comes [to] me, ‘Okay, here’s the 60 bucks for the other night,’” she said. “I mean, at least come with like a respectable sum of money!”

Vergara also talked about her 18-year-old son, who she took to Vegas for his birthday because she thinks if he experiences things in moderation without mystery, he’ll stay a good kid. “Gambling, hookers!,” Butler cracked. “But me with, under my supervision,” she said. “Maybe that’s what you needed. Maybe you can do all that but with my supervision.”

“I’m likin’ the way this is goin’,” Butler cracked.

She also revealed that she wanted to be a dentist, and that she’s naturally blond. “This is all fake. I always say, ‘If you throw me, like, in a chlorine pool, then all the Latin goes away.’” Why did she darken her hair? “[Casting directors] wouldn’t believe that somebody that had this accent, the attitude, the body, and blond? They didn’t know where to put me.” Once she became brunette, she got a job. “I became the hot Latina immediately.”

Leno seemed determined to hook Butler and Vergara up, and I’d be fine with that couple. He asked her if she’d date an older man, like Gloria does on Modern Family. Butler started coughing. Vergara insisted she was older than him. But Butler told her he was like 60. “You are? Okay,” she said, turning back to Leno. The she snapped her head back to Butler, “Yeah, but you have no money.” Love her! Watch the video after the jump. READ FULL STORY »
