Spring Break felt different this year. Suddenly for our CRU seniors, it was no longer just an opportunity to party and forget all responsibilities (don’t they do that school anyway?) but rather just a momentary break from thinking about the future. And in case you haven’t noticed, no one has been thinking about the future more than Casey.
The episode’s focus on fear tied things together nicely: “Fear is natural, it’s good, it keeps you from making mistakes and doing things you’re not ready for,” Casey explained to Cappie, from high atop a bungee-jumping ledge. Of course her fear and the fear of many graduating seniors was much scarier than a measly hundred-foot drop.
Ultimately, Ashleigh handled this fear and uncertainty with the most poise. No longer merely Casey’s spacey sidekick, she’s risen to full-fledged comedienne this season, becoming the bright spot of almost every episode. And she wasn’t simply relegated to comic relief last night. For the first time it wasn’t confident Casey Cartwright who knew just where she should and would be after graduation, but Ashleigh, the girl who had come to college hoping to get a degree and a guy, and spent her years latched on to a pretty blonde best friend, immersing herself in sorority politics and stressing over formal dates and mixer themes. I thought her speech to “trendcaster” Faith Flowers (her fairy jobmother) was incredibly earnest, and found myself reliving moments of my own pre-graduation crisis. She sounded like a true 22-year-old, a person who wants a foot in the door but is not quite sure how to go about it. She can identify her passion and knows she would be much happier doing something that she loves instead of something she doesn’t, simply because “that’s what people do.” I’m glad that she wasn’t automatically given a cushy assistant position with Flowers, and will be starting out with a more realistic unpaid internship (been there, done that!). Now with an option for the future, she has accepted that college will come to an end and that she is ready to leave CRU behind (showing Casey that it’s not that scary after all). Plus, the fact that she came to Myrtle Beach looking for a boy and left with a job was pretty empowering. Woo Team Ashleigh!
Since Casey has always been portrayed as the leader in her house and on campus, you can probably imagine how much I wanted to throw my nostalgic can of Natty Light at the screen when she was considering sticking around Cyprus… to be with Cappie, who will continue to make beer jokes in freshmen seminar classes until he’s 65, and to work as the new Zeta Beta Zeta house-mother. Seriously?! You got into George Washington Law! I love Cappie and all, but their perpetual disagreement over the future, and his unwillingness to leave college, is starting to wear thin. While she is driven, she’s also a little bit of the girl who changes with every boyfriend she has. I was worried that Greek‘s finale was going the route of the exhausted TV series where everyone stays in the same place forever. While there isn’t any proof that this won’t ultimately happen (Cappie miraculously moves to DC! Casey’s rejection from CRU Law was a mistake!), I was pleased to see Casey put herself first, even though Cappie was devastated. My heart broke for Cappie… until he opened his mouth and became a total jerk! His reaction infuriated me. I understand that he can’t help feeling sad and rejected by her decision, and that breaking things off now may seem easier, but last time I checked, he’s the one going against the grain by staying in school longer than everyone else. Why should Casey adjust her life to fit his plans? Regardless, I’m sad at the possibility that this might be the end of these two. We’ve waited so long for them to be together, this just seems unfairly cruel.
But before the sadness of separation sets in, let’s remember the good times…
++ “Happy Spring Break Evan Pompeo… of Grey’s Anatomy fame” – Cappie, ever the pop culture connoisseur. Shouldn’t we offer him at job at EW at this point?
++ “My only comfort is knowing I’m below the Mason-Dixon Line” – Dale
++ The “Darwin Lied” poster in Dale and Rusty’s apartment (has that always been there? Amazing!)
What did you think about Greek‘s season finale? Will Cappie ever grow up? Are you happy that Evan and Rebecca got back together? Pleased with Kappa Tau’s prank on Omega Chi? Are you starting a countdown for the next season already?

There’s only one season left, and I’m hoping Cappie will get his act together and discover what he wants to do in life. Then successful, still witty and slacker-ish Cappie will win back Casey’s heart. Because if the series doesn’t end with them together, why have I been watching? Emotional payoff is needed, Greek writers. Take note.
I love the line that Rusty repeated to Casey from the first line in the book Peter Pan. Everyone has to grow up, except one. The reality is that some people(usually men)do never grow up. Hence the name Peter Pan syndrome. No matter how much they love you or you love them, they are suspended in a kind of childhood forever. Not great a chioce for a lifetime mate. It’s often a very sad outcome, when you get involved with someone like that. Just for the record… are Cappie’s parents both billionaires and CRAZY, that they can and will continue to fund his education, with his major in drinking and minor in college hijinks…Please. I really would love to see Cappie finally grow up, spurred on by the thought of losing Casey. Although that can and does(occasionally) happen, it is the exception not the rule.
They explained in one of the last episodes that his parents have money and Cappie got alot of scholorships to attend CRU.
“Darwin Lied” is the name of Dale’s band from the first season. Remember when he fist met Casey and wrote a song for her because he was so in love?
I always forget about that “Darwin Lied” episode! For some reason I always miss it when I rewatch the series.
Cappie and Casey broke my heart – I agree with elena, those two need to be together in the end. I understand the fighting and breaking up and the need for each of them to grow, but in the end its need to be them together, taking on the world (you know what I mean).
Also, can we please get more consistent Greek recaps?? This one was good and I’d love more, instead of just random occasions.
Am I the only person who doesn’t believe Cappie and Casey should be together? I cheered when she realized they were just a “short story.” They are. That’s college.
I do love Cappie and Casey, they’ve been great but I do agree with you that they are just a “short story”. I’m really hoping Cappie realizes that too because that really is college, not every relationship you have in college can last in the real world.
Nope, not the only one. While I love Casey and Cappie, I don’t think they’re destined for each other. I’m really glad the last couple of episodes have been trying to show Casey that she needs to grow up and move on, because that’s what really happens when you graduate. Sure, you’ve made friends, loved people, but in the end, it’s your life you have to go live. You can’t just stay at CRU for the boy, you’ll never get anywhere.
I’m right there with ya. Evan has really gotten his act together and I think Evan and Casey would be great together now! Get over Rebecca…woof.
woof? Rebecca? woof? really? OMG -she is gorgeous!
i don’t want them together. i think we only rooted for them for so long because the writers put them in this “will they, won’t they” relationship. once the finally got together, i realized they didn’t fit.
I’m with you there! I was in a “college relationship” and we broke up for more or less the same reasons. I never got the appeal of them as a couple.
I completely disagree!!! I’m 28 & have been w/ my husband for 10 years….. off and on… we met freshman year & went through a lot of the same things. We’re both Greek & went through many ups & downs, but we never stopped loving each other. It took 4 years of growing to learn how to grow WITH each other. Just because Cappie & Casey are in college does not mean that they can’t work in the end.
Agree. I think they stand a good chance, but they need to grow up first. But I still want them together when all is said and done.
That’s a great story, good for you and your husband. I hope your love contines to grow and thrive.
love C&C, theire so cuute together!! but when is the next episode ?
At this point, I’m not sure that I care what happens with Cappie and Casey. I’m tired of rooting for Cappie, as he’s an intolerable child. Casey was right when she said that their relationship made sense only in the world of college. The same applies to Cappie’s behavior. His idiocy wouldn’t be tolerated in real life. It’s too bad that Evan turned out to be such a schmuck because he and Casey make more sense to me.
Perhaps I just haven’t been paying attention, but do we know what is going to happen post-college? These people have essentially graduated but the show’s called Greek. Is the show ending? In regards to Cappie’s reaction at the end – he may have been a jerk, but that’s a natural reaction. You can’t stay with someone, especially someone you love, knowing you’re going to break-up. It’s impossible. I don’t know how, but I hope Cappie and Casey get together in the end. That’s the relationship I’ve been cheering for all along (even though they were both slightly annoying this season).
They have another season (ten episodes), and the creators are planning on getting things wrapped up by then.
Remy, I second your request. I love Greek, and a wish there was a quick recap on Tuesdays. I think that Cappie is very childish. Cassie needs to get with the cute lawyer. Yummy! But I do hope that in tje end he grows up a little, cuts is hair a little, and realizes that college is great, but turns tragic if you stay too long!
I’ve never been one that has been on the Casey and Cappie bandwagon, and the way they’re going about their senior year only highlights why I could never see these two together. And shame on her for even thinking of changing her plans for law school to stay behind at CRU with him, especially when he’s still so unfocused. I could care less if they ever got back together. I love them individually but definitely not as a couple.
Ashleigh is just so much fun! I’d love to hang out with her.
Indifferent to Evan and Rebecca getting back together.
Maybe I read this a little bit differently but I thought that the main reason Casey considered staying at Cyprus was more about her own fear of the unknown than staying with Cappie. Everyone around her was dropping hints about how hard law school is, how she’s not going to know anyone, etc. It sounds like a case of being afraid to fail…
I agree with 24yanks. Casey’s consideration for the housemom job was more about being afraid of change. She had hoped she’d be embarking on the “Law School” portion of her life with Cappie. Now that it’s become apparent that she won’t be doing that with him – it’s even more scary. I think seeing Ashleigh bravely embracing her future made her realise that she was basing her decision on fear. I never saw a point where she ever seemed to be doing anything “for” Cappie or in order to stay with him. If neither of them are willing to compromise, it’s doomed. I find it telling that neither of them even considered an attempt at a long-distance relationship. True, they rarely work out but couples who are meant to be together would try to make it work.
Well I think Pace-I mean Cappie’s response was predictable. I do hope they get back together though. This show is so similar to the Dawson’s Creek Triangle that I really hope it plays out the same way. I love Rebecca and Evan together -I think it makes way more sense than Evan and Casey.
With a TV show like this It is really hard to have the show end with Casey with some new guy she meets at law school -even though that is realistic, it doesn’t have the emotional payoff when there is a new character. So for my money it has to be Cappie or Evan and given the choice I’m on team Cappie!
I just want Heath and Calvin to get together already because come ON they both obviously want to AND they’re awesome.
And more Beaver please…=)
ITA – Heath and Calvin need to get back together for sure. I did not like Grant for Calvin!
Heath and Calvin definitely need to happen again. Even when they just bump into each other, their interactions always have great chemistry.
I will seriously be so heart broken if Cappie and Casey split up and/or do not end up together when the series ends.
I know not all people meet their soul mates freshman year in college but this is a case of a couple that did.
I have watched Greek along with many other fans always with the comfort in mind that Cappie and Casey ending up together was the central them and core of this show. (i.e. Ross/Rachel, Joey/Pacey, Meredith/McDreamy, Lorelei/Luke)
Please don’t disappoint your loyal and fans and go the way of many bad shows before you.
I understand your frustration with Cappie, but I’m actually angrier at Casey. Exactly one season ago, what was Cappie saying? That he was an unambitious frat boy and that Casey would eventually remember that and not want to be with him anymore. Maybe Cappie isn’t growing up, but Casey knew what she was getting into before they got together because he told her he was going to have trouble letting go of college, and now she’s surprised because that’s exactly what he’s doing.
…Evan Pompeo.
I’m rooting for a 7th-round rookie running back with that name just so he can get punk’d with yet ANOTHER so-called Evan insult…
