Celine Dion celebrates birthday. Our gift? A list of songs we secretly love.

celine-dionImage Credit: Pixplanete/PR PhotosCeline Dion turns 42 today, and to honor her, we’re all going to divulge the song(s) in her catalog that we secretly love. Note: “The Power of Love,” “All By Myself,” and “My Heart Will Go On” are givens. I’ll start:

•  “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now”: I have belted it out in many a private karaoke room (obviously ending it early). Maybe it’s because I only do it when I’ve had a lot to drink, but it’s the only song that I truly perform. “There were nights of endless pleasure/It was more than all your laws allow” wait for it, wait for it, wait for it, “Baby, Baby, Ba-by when I touch you like this…”

“To Love You More”: It’s all about the dramatic pause at 3:28. “I’ll be… waiting for you” and, of course, the chest pound.

“A New Day Has Come”: I feel guiltiest about this one, especially after watching the video. But I can’t get enough of the high airy run she does at 3:23.

“I Drove All Night”: It’s only acceptable live. She opened with it when I saw her at the Garden (read the play-by-play), and it did its job.

“You Shook Me All Night Long”: Okay, correction: I feel guiltiest about this one. But I love that Celine will go balls to the wall on any song, anytime, and thrust her hips as if we actually think of her as a sexual being. I may have bought the VH1 Divas Live 2002 CD just for this duet with Anastacia.

Your turn. No one will judge you unless you say “Because You Loved Me.” (Just kidding! But about which part?)

Ack I love her album All the way … a decade of song! My boyfriend was like “how do you know the words to all of these Celine Dion songs??? I didn’t even know you *liked* Celine Dion!”

      IS’T???

I’ve got a special place for “Then You Look At Me”. When the music for that song starts playing at the end of Bicentennial Man, I just start bawling (and with that I have revealed my secret love for that movie).

And “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now” is just always fun to sing with a group of girls in a car. So much drama can be acted out.

I like all of the ones listed above, but would add the song from Beauty and the Beast to the list.

      agreed!

YES! when i was a kid i used to act out It’s all coming back to me now…and I still do to this DAY! it’s so dramatic how can you resist?!

Celine receives quite a bit of negative attention for being a little too over the top for her music, but the girl can SING!!! I saw her show in Las Vegas three times and unlike many of the canned and manufactured artists of today, she sounds just as awesome live as she does in the recording studio. I think it is a shame that people belittle her talent or call her music a “guilty” pleasure. I certainly don’t feel ashamed to say i love her music, which is far superior than the packaged flavors of the week that seem to be the norm in today’s music.

Agreed! I am not guilty about loving Celine! She has got a killer voice. No one can touch it.

All of them are so much fun to preform. Great songs for car belting. If anyone in the Chicago area sees a 22 year old preforming to Celine in a Prius as if she’s headlining a sold out concert, that would be me. Some faves: All By Myself, It’s All Coming Back To Me Now, Taking Chances, and even My Heart Will Go On (even though it was played to death and then beat with a stick I still love it).

I like “Love Can Move Mountains” because she’s rollerskating in the video (why?) and really she should sing some more uptempo songs.

  • JosieG

Actually I like her French songs much better.

25 years old here. She has been my FAVORITE for as long as I can remember. Pretty sure it began with my obsessed with Beauty & the Beast when I was 7.

My favorites? Taking Chances, Make you Happy, and Can’t Fight the Feeling

AGREED! And I’m 23 ;) I love her songs, both English and French, even though they’re so different (because I think they are). And whoever thinks she’s a boring lady singing ballads… should have gone to one of her TC Tour concerts!

I (not so secretly) listen to That’s the Way It Is and A New Day Has Come. I also (not so secretly) LOVE the chest slap and the pinched fingers when singing something particularly poignant.

  • Fan

This article was hilarious. I love all of these songs and have belted them all out after having too much to drink.

  • Lynny

I am NOT a CD fan, although I will admit the woman has a hell of a voice, but I do sing along with Where Does My Heart Beat Now when it comes on, for some reason.

As a teenage boy who came of age in the 90’s my guilty pleasure from the cynicism of grunge was Celine. My mom got me hooked on early Celine like “Where Does My Heart Beat Now” and “The Power of Love.” I equate her to Journey, you can’t help but sing at the top of your lungs when she’s on.

  • Callie

Mandi, can we please go sing karaoke sometime? I also live in New York City and will bring my best Celine Dion impersonation (plus the Ace of Base songbook).
    Just name the day.

  • Victor Eloy

THAT’S THE WAY IT IS AND I’M ALIVE TOO!
SHE SOULD RECORD AN ALBUM LIKE FALLING INTO YOU AGAINA (that by the way it won album of the year back in 97…..) at least she can SING, not like stupid overrated mediocre taylor.
