'Project Runway' recap: The (custom-made) fabric of their lives

I am sad, Runway friends. Not sad like Jonathan’s dress (whatever — we’ll get to that) or like my hair when I’m on deadline, but genuinely aggrieved. I knew this day could come. That I’d eventually have to say goodbye to the most lovable contestant since Chris March. Bid adieu to someone capable of turning a sentence as banal as “I’m gonna go see about some dyed fabrics” into LOL hilarity. Give a fond farewell to a guy so charming that he remains on my top fave list even when he speaks in the third person. Of course I knew it could all come to an end. Yet still I feel blue.

Bummer, man.

I did love this week’s challenge, though. As a print-obsessed clothes horse myself (Marimekko, you complete me!), I totally dug the idea that the designers got to create their own fabric with some handy help from the snazzy technology of some company or another. (What brand sponsored this episode again? It was far too subtle a mention for me to pick up.) And at last, we got a two-day challenge! No more excuses for unfinished hems, puckering seams, and all-around suckitudinous suckery, gang!

And there really was no sartorial hideousness for the ages last night. Which is terrific… but also, I admit, slightly disappointing. What provides a better serotonin boost than a major eff-up on this show? I still laugh thinking about the menswear challenge from the Runway of yore.

In any case, once the magical, fabric-producing elves delivered the designers’ custom-made textiles on day 2, the contestants all had plenty to say about each other’s creations. Anthony compared Mila’s rainbow stripes to Legos, and Mila deemed Emilio’s graffiti “one of the worst in the room.” Tim Gunn appeared to concur. All Gunn Power could see in Emilio’s busy-like-triple-coupon-day-at-Walmart “ES♥SA” monogram print was “SA” (for Seth Aaron) and “ES” (for Emilio Sosa). Oh, a call back to last week’s winning pair-up! Confusing! And all Emilio could do in response to our beloved Gunn was dismiss him. “Okay, great, Tim,” he said, oozing the type of scorn that would make a Mean Girl rage with jealously (and therefore write nasty things about you in the bathroom during lunch.) “I do not listen to Tim, whether he likes it or not.” Well alright then.

It just so happens that I was confused by the exact same SA/ES issue. But my real problem with Emilio’s pattern was the lack of creativity. It was so blatantly derivative of any number of top-tier designers who slap their logo/initials/name on whatever product they’re selling. I admit I’m biased. I’ve never been a fan of monogram prints. Maybe I’m still getting over all the Esprit- and Benetton-emblazoned sweatshirts everyone (including me) wore in the ’80s, but it just doesn’t interest me to give corporations free advertising via the duds I pay for with my hard-earned moolah. And isn’t it just a wee bit presumptuous of Emilio to create an homage-to-himself pattern at this stage, before he’s a known entity? Ah, but there’s no stopping a ravenous ego. It must be fed!

And fed it was, come runway time. To my great surprise, The Holy Trinity, plus Vivienne Tam (she whose butterfly prints surely make Mariah Carey swoon), are actually fans of derivative patterns! Silly me for thinking that the judges who just last week chastised Maya for being too referential to other designers would do anything but fawn over Emilio’s graffiti-meets-1940s look (um… huh?). I am eager to read Gunn’s blog to discover what he has to say about this decision, but for now, color me puzzled. That voluminous black jacket was cool and the dress hugged the model’s curves like a Porsche racing around a hairpin turn. But was it wowza? Not in my opinion. Emilio won anyway. And celebrated with an endless stream of annoying triumphant fist-pumps.

This, by the by, marks Emilio’s third win, which means he’s got a very good shot at being a Bryant Park finalist for reelz. If that’s not a sobering thought, then perhaps none of us is drunk enough.

As for the other top two, Maya triumphed over her initial designer’s-block and whipped up a perfectly snazzy little number that combined an electric-shockwave print with just the right textural, sculptural flair. Her print was the judges’ favorite. Seth Aaron, meanwhile, put out another terrifically SA design, impeccably tailored and full of his pop-art punk sensibility. (But who would wear it? I dunno.) Did he not win because the pants were a little loosey goosey on the thighs? ‘Cause other than that, I saw no reason why the dude should not have walked off with the prize instead of Mr. Frowny Pants.

Oh, yes: Jay earned a ticket to the middle ground safety zone with his jacket-and-shorts ensemble that was cool, save for that neon-green, lizard-zebra (lizbra?) print that kinda creeped me out and triggered Michael Kors’ Metamucil face.

Anyway.

Mila and her Tee-Pee Hideaway for Mexican Serapes, Pride Flags, and Your Mom on the Patio in 1972 earned Our Lady of Severe Bangs a spot among the bottom dwellers — and rightly so. There was just no point to her maxi dress. If she’d replaced that inexplicable sea of boring whiteness with more of the custom rainbow fabric — on the bias or even with the stripes running perpendicular to those on the bottom — she would have produced a dress that was (Randy Jackson hyperbole alert!) a bazillion times more visually stimulating. Poor Brandeis couldn’t even walk in it. And that jacket? Nice lining, but horrible fit and too much black. Point. Less. But not offensive enough to make the bottom two.

No, the Circle of Hell was reserved for Jonathan and Anthony this week. And you know what? I happen to like Jonathan’s print. It had a chic softness to it that contrasted with the rest of the gang’s comparatively loud prints. Didn’t love that nutty backwards jacket, but the dress was pretty, dammit. Kudos for him for standing up for himself when Nina said the look was “sad” and Kors likened the dress to a “dirty tablecloth.” But a fat lot of good it did the poor guy — other than awakening Kors’ Fire-Breathing Beast Within. “Oh, look at that!” he snarled as Jonathan helped Cerri back into the mini-coat. “Your husband helps you back into your straight jacket. Awww…that’s not a good thing. Sweetie!” Good gawd! I’m all for a little fun bitchiness from the judges, but this attack was just pure condescending nastiness. And the way the other judges chimed in with mmmwaaa-hahaha laughter? Totally uncalled for. Just really mean.

Yet for all that hideous beastliness — I mean, did you see Nina’s face when she barked, “It looked poooooooor!”? — it wasn’t Jonathan, but our dear Southern Belle who got the ax. Emilio wins and Anthony’s out. That’s some bat-s— judging, right there. Now, I can’t sit here and deny that Anthony hasn’t made a number of dresses similar to last night’s. Nor can I argue that he’s the visionary of this season. And I realize that there are challenges where someone just has to go. But I can say I thought his print and the detailing on the bodice were just lovely. And more than anything, Anthony is just a great freakin’ person to welcome into our homes every Thursday night. Without him around to lighten the air with his monologues about Beyoncé, Oprah, and his uncle Leroy, and telling Jay he looks like a “gay Christmas present,” the rest of the season, I fear, will be oh so very… well, dull. And how splendid would it have been to see our guy go head-to-head with this “opinionated celebrity” who’s gonna be on next week?

Of course, Anthony would probably not stand for all this doom and gloom. Just look at his final moments on the show. Instead of moping, he smiled. Instead of crying, he laughed. And without fail, he left us with more than a few delicious sound bites to savor:

“Life has taught us that you don’t have to have the crown to be the queen.”

“Don’t cry for Anthony, honey. Matter of fact, toss back one for me.”

What a way to go out with your head held high. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got some shots to toss back. I am nothing if not obedient.

What did you think of this week’s print-it-to-win-it episode? Were you friend or foe to Emilio’s graffiti monogram? Should SA have taken the win? Were you thrown off by his Sidekick phone call home — even though there were no tears? Are you mourning the auf’ing of our Southern Belle? Have you figured out the big twist of next week’s episode? And did anyone else notice that Heidi rocked not one, but two ginormous necklaces this week?

Be sure to check back here on PopWatch (the new home of my Runway recaps!) later today for my exit interview with Anthony.

I too am bummed that Anthony got the ax last night. I loved his line about Mila’s dress looking like legos and how he didn’t want to wear them, he just wanted to play with them. I’m really shocked SA didn’t win. I thought his design and garment were so much better and more complex that Emilio’s. Emilio made two pieces and that dress was almost entirely that terrible print. SA had the pants, the little jacket, the shirt, and a tie. I agree. I don’t know who would wear that whole outfit, but I’d totally buy the jacket.

    • dworm

Seth-Aaron has been my fave since day one. Love his work.

    • Sadie

Sooooo upset to see Anthony go. The bit about being on Oprah with the depressing guests had me in tears laughing. Mila should have gone home for designing a dress that wasn’t even wearable. I LOVE Seth Aaron’s stuff — nothing I would wear, but well done and he seems to have a clear vision. He definitley should have won over Emilio’s egomaniacal child’s play print. Ugh.

      • LTC

Anthony is gone boohoo. I loved the way he talked and his phrasings. I’m sure we haven’t seen the last of him.
Also, although I’m usually not a fan of Seth Aaron’s style, I think he is fabulous. He sort of reminds of Jeffrey from a previous season, only more talented and impeccable skills. His Black & White jacket from the kid’s challenge was one of the best pieces I’ve ever seen on Runway.

      • seattleellen

I was shocked that Emilio won – I felt the same way Tim Gunn did about that print. Anthony should of stayed & Mila should of gone. Her print reminded me of a beach chair and the model couldn’t even walk in it-give me a break. Seth Aaron should of won. And I felt bad that the judges were downright nasty to Jonathan. I also liked his material & dress-if not the jacket.I thought they were way too harsh on him.

    • Mary Q. Contrary

I dunno if I would buy Seth Aaron’s stuff, because it’s not really my thing, but there is no doubt he’s incredibly talented. And Missy, I’m REALLY glad you called out Kors and the rest of judges for what they did to Jonathan. A) The way that he stood up for his work was nothing new, and much, much, much tamer than some we’ve seen before (here’s looking at you, Santino). B) It was totally not as heinous as they made it out to be, and I, too, really dug his print. C) The amped-more-than-usual nastiness that oozed from Michael Kors was a bit shocking, frankly, but nothing prepared me for the mocking, mean, hurtful group laughter that followed. I was literally ashamed of every single member of that panel in that moment, especially since Jonathan is one of the more likable, gentle, and sensitive contestants we’ve seen on the series history. But Gooooooooooo Jonathan, once again, because not only did you not give them the satisfaction shedding tears in their presence, but you also stood by your design, in the face of such cruel and unusual humiliation.

      • cf

Wow, Mary, all I can say is ditto, cause you said everything I wanted to.

      • seattleellen

Well said! I agree completely. I liked Jonathan’s material & dress & he has been very funny in the work-room. His personality is one of my favorites this season. I couldn’t believe how the judges turned on him. I was thankful he spoke up and I’m glad he is not gone yet. I was worried for him with the judges uncalled attacks. I still think it should of been Mila this week.

      • gink

Totally agree–the judges were awful and I don’t understand why Anthony was sent home when Mila’s dress was such a train wreck and they openly loathed Johnathon’. Mila’s model couldn’t even walk in it–and the judges went after the model for not making it work. Talk about a cranky week!

Anthony–you were robbed and will be missed at our house.

      • JenD

i totally agree too. also i couldn’t help but think that jonathan had rejected kors coming onto him or something so the Big MK had to exact revenge mean girls style. it was soooo wrong. and yeah, with heidi and nina joining in… what a couple of b*****s. and emilio does NOT deserve the win. either Jay or Seth Aaron PLEASE!

      • rory

Although I agree about the judges shocking and distasteful bullying bullying of Jonathon, I was shocked that he later auf’d his model who stood up to the judges, in his defense. That action frankly made me feel less bad for him.

      • Julia

I agree with most of this, but I was so disappointed in Johnathan when he dumped Ceri, after she stood up for him on the runway! He took the easy way out by switching models so that he wouldn’t have to figure out what looks good on her body type.

      • D

Agree 100% with Mary Q. The judges stepped over the line from being entertaining and snarky to rude and bullying. Regarding Jonathan dumping Carrie, I can understand why he did it but I did not like the WAY he did it. He should have started out with “Sorry Carrie” so that she knew what was coming. The way he did it was like a sucker punch.

      • Victoria

Mary, I agree with everything you’ve said. The judges acted like children. I wonder if Heidi’s children acted like that if she would condone their behavior???

      • kellybelly

        Completely agree!
I loved Jonathon’s print and his dress was lovely. I thought the judges were high.

      • Tully

Three famous mature adults Kors, Garcia and Klum laughing and mocking the work of a young, unknown contestant-designer – it’s very revealing of who they are behind their well-dressed and well-coiffed facades.

      • JS

I agree that the judges were beastly and petty, but apparently these exchanges have been ongoing. Listen to Jonathan’s video blog at lifetime.com…he says they keep disparaging his references and accusing him of having a tremendous ego. Ouch. What a bunch of b***es.

      • Gigi

YOU GO MARY! WTF was wrong with the judges? Were they throwing back a few? High on crack? I’m guessing this happens way more than they ever show! And Jonathan’s print WAS lovely!

      • JB

I 100% agree with all points! Too many things wrong with this episode!!!

    • brad

the winner should have been seth aaron (second: maya). i actually liked emilio’s print (very marc by marc jacobs), but i HATED the dress with its black belt and neckline. he should have taken anthony’s place in the bottom three (while anthony should have been safe, and jay #3). mila was the absolute worst and should have gone home for that paper art project.

      • brad

oh, and i forgot to add that i was surprised missy didnt use mila’s nickname for tim gunn (t.g.!) in the recap.

      • D

        I liked TG too.

      • nykolus

ugh… i bristled when she said that. just leave already, mila.

    • dv

I wasn’t a big fan of the Emilio win, either. Actually, I didn’t like any of the prints (especially that fruit-stripe gum wrapper Mila sent down the runway). Remember Uli a few seasons back? She would have rocked this challenge. SA probably should have won. And Mila should have gone home. and Jonathan did not deserve that meanness from the judges. made me lose a lot of respect for the judges.

      • jojo

OMG!!! You are so totally right, Uli was born for prints and she would have created something more complex than stripes (Looking at you Mila, Maya, Jonathan, Jay).

      • jojo

Sorry, I mean Anthony not Jonathan:)

  • Elizabeth

When I looked at Emilio’s outfit, all I could think was “If that doesn’t scream Target”…
I don’t like Seth Aaron that much, but his was far and away the better piece.

    • West Coast Laura

LOL… I thought the same thing. Seth Aaron is putting out several well made and tailored pieces every challenge and still he gets very little love. What he does in time allotted is fantastic.

    • Brenda Barrett

Amen. I honestly thought Emilio would be in the bottom three, and Jonathan in the top. “E.Sotha’s” ensemble was hideous. Seth Aaron should have won the challenge by a mile.

      • Iman

Oh my GOD! I have a green top that I got from Target that has the exact same print!
Also, I thought there was a bit of Freudian slip (almost) when Tim Gunn pointed out that the print seemed like Seth Aron Emilia Sosa. Did anyone notice that or thought that was weird?

      • Anna

Tim was right on about that print. Especially if you look at it close up. It’s a complete mess. The lettering is something a 5 year old would do and it’s not properly spaced so the letters run together all wrong. In some places his name is even spelled soosa. The hearts look more like bullets than O’s so it looks as if SA (Seth Aaron) are the first letters in the print.

      • KRibbons

I almost died when Tim was like “Seth Aaron Emilio Sosa, I see it.” I mean to think that he really thought that was Emilio’s intention is hilarious! And, yes, I’m pretty sure Walmart has that exact same fabric except it says “miley♥miley♥miley♥miley”

      • kellybelly

OMGOSH! I too didn’t like Emilio’s print. I mean it was just okay. But I wouldn’t wear the print. The dress design was good. And yes, Seth Aaron should have won.

    • Allison M

Agreed. Target or cheap-off-the-street-in-the-city. Especially with misspellings haha.

  • as

Emilio you are OUT as far as I’m concerned with your kindergarten graffiti….dissing TIM GUNN???? What an arrogant JERK. Your nuts and bolts bathing suit should have ‘nailed’ you weeks ago.

    • elr

I couldn’t agree more. What did the judges see that the viewing audience didn’t? I HATED Emilio’s print, while I LOVED Jonathan’s. And if Maya had the judges favorite print WHY didn’t she win this challenge? What does the girl have to produce for them to give her a win? I also thought that if Anthony would have used more of his fabric he might still be around. I liked his print but that little bit in the bodice of his dress didn’t show it to good advantage.

      • Laura Elizabeth

I loved Jonathan’s dress too(not the jacket though). I could not get why they were so seethingly nasty to him last night. I thought the print on Emilo’s would get him kicked off! Seth Aaron should have won. I still have not gotten over Emilio not getting kicked off for the washer string bikini!

      • Marsha

I, too, thought Michael Kors was absolutely ****ing rude last night. He is a douche. Mila’s dress was idiotic. She should have gone. Poor judging this year. Emilio can leave anytime. Much too full of himself.

      • D

Agree with you on Anthony’s print. It did not seem properly incorporated into the design.

    • Tlynn

Though I didn’t LOVE Emilo’s print or dress, it fit the challenge. And though I love TIMMY, you cannot always let him lead you. He’s not a judge. Remember Mychael Knight of season 3, Tim didn’t like his hot pants, and he won.

      • Terri

Right, and I think Tim would agree that you should disregard him if you feel that strongly about your design. You need to make it work, not do what Tim says.

      • Lola

Very true, but do you remember Sweet Pea? If she hadn’t listened to Ms. Gunn she never would have stuck around so long.

    • Mo

Okay, call me tacky, but I actually liked Emilio’s print. It does remind me of stuff already out, but I didn’t think it was terrible. I do not like Emilio though. He’s really arrogant. But, what it PR without one arrogant person?

Loved Anthony and hated to see him go. He had me rolling about Oprah “don’t have me on the show where the husband has a porn addiction…no, I don’t want to be on that one.” HA! The silver lining is the possibility of having him come back when they remaining ones have that partner challenge in the end. I hope they still do that this season.

    • Mo

Did you read Tim Gunn’s blog? He’s never liked Emilio’s attitude, and he’s definitely not liking the judges’ decisions this year, and this week he lets it all hang out (as much as a gentleman such as Tim can let his loathing hang out). I am getting the impression that Tim is exasperated with the judges this year, and I am fearful that he might end up leaving. I don’t think PR could make it work without Tim Gunn.

      • Mo

Huh, I didn’t realize the other Mo posted before me. We’re confusing!

      • Mary Q. Contrary

Which is why one of you should switch to Mo Mo! But don’t both go raising your hands at the same time.

      • KRibbons

Maybe he’ll get a full-time gig on How I Met Your Mother!!

  • Buffy Freak

The sad fact is that Emilio should have been out weeks ago with that chain-link bikini mess. And I thought Jonathan’s fabric was really nice but his design was a mess. That jacket was ridiculous.

    • Kathy

Yes, Emilio shouldn’t even be in the competition, based on that horrid bikini. This is bad judging!

    • Stacey

COMPLETELY agree. Whether Emilio should’ve won last night or not is irrelevant to me. He should’ve been gone weeks ago with that biking. OMIGOD. That was probably the worst thing I’ve EVER seen on Project Runway. Last night’s outfit was kinda cute, but, heck, the dress was so simple I could’ve made it. Well, maybe not..but..you get the point ; )

    • jones

Agreed. I cannot stand him. I hope he makes it to the final 4 and just barely missing making it to fashion week.

    • allie08

Totally agree. He made an ugly string bikini for a stripper – and made his gorgeous model look like a drag queen while wearing it! The dress last night seemed like a knock off of other styles that have been around for years – plus it looked cheap. The jacket was terrible. Maybe it was how he sold it “grafitti meets 40′s vintage” that blinded the judges? Plus, can the guy be any more arrogant?

      • D

I really didn’t like the print (especially up close) but I HATED the jacket. Absolutely hated it.

    • Susie

It was like a short, couture snuggie!

    • Jenny

Totally agree that Emilio should have been out in the hardware challenge. Can’t understand the judges love for him. I will totally miss Anthony. What an entertainer.

    • Baj

Did the judges even know that Emilio intended to make a dress during hardware week? It was only when he realized he didn’t purchase enough bolts that he ended up with a bikini? He never owned up to his mistake and told the judges he made a bikini because everyone else was doing a dress. Ha!

  • Clove

The pattern panel on Mila’s dress looked like a Plan-B patch to cover up her not having enough white fabric, not like a deliberate design choice. Why is she still there?

    • as

That’s what I said. Mila design plan: Black and white dress/tent with a few stripes of challenge fabric sewed on.

    • D

Her sketch looked much better than the actual dress turned out.

  • as

The Jonathan laugh fest they were having was nasty mean. My theory… the ratings must be down.
I thought Jonathan’s fabric(the challenge mind you) was subtle, soft and organic…. but apparently that doesn’t photograph well on the cover of ‘Mary Claire’ the new measure of everything brilliant. I guess he should have tried turquoise (sorry Anthony) but it was time for you to go…1 afternoon cocktail dress too many.

    • Julia

Totally agree that the judges joined in a boorish, classless display of Mean Girl pile-on. When you wonder what’s wrong with the world, it’s that kind of mob behavior and lack of civility that’s wrong – punishing people because they have a different viewpoint than you. In this case, punishing with scorn and contemptuous laughter – the refuge of the pathetic, insecure snob. Shame on Michael Kors and shame on Heidi for joining in. Usually she is honest but not mean.

      • Laura Elizabeth

I could not agree with you more. I honestly feel like I don’t want to watch this show anymore after that display of nasty high school girl behavior! Michael Kors went way overboard for some reason and I was really ashamed of Heidi! I never expected that of her! Lost respect for all of them last night.

    • natalie

Thank you, as and Julia!! I’ve never disliked the judges more than when they were piling on Jonathan last night. I wondered if I was just in a bad mood from losing Amy last week. But that was horrible, right?

      • D

I have thought Heidi was unnecessarily mean at times last season but I was absolutely disgusted with all of them last night.

  • john_c

I am shocked that Jonathan was not out after his self defense. His dress and print were so grey and gloomy.

    • as

Where in the challenge did it say USE BRIGHT COLORS and since when are bright colors better in fashion?

    • BruceMpls

I think the problem with Jonathan’s pattern is that it was so light, you had to be right on top of it to see it. On the show when the camera’s were back showing all the contestants and models, you couldn’t see anything except gray. Only when the camera’s were right on model could you really see the pattern. It just needed a little “punch”. Speaking of which, if I were Jonathan, that’s exactly what I would have done to Kors.

    • D

Everything made last season was gloomy, so what?

  • as

On Mila: Yet again our infamous judges are SAVING people based on some vague notion of potential.
Not being able to walk in a dress was always a sure fire “You’re OUT”.
Did anyone else notice that Mila’s basic ‘dress’ was still majority black and white?

    • Mimi

I agree, Mila should have gone home. It was unwearable. Who wears dresses they can’t walk in? Plus it was old fashioned and ugly. And what was with the black jacket? Hated Emelio’s fabric, but the dress was great. Jacket not so much. Jonathan really screwed up that weird jacket. The dress was okay, as was the fabric. On a darker skinned girl it would have looked better. I love Anthony’s dresses. I would wear his dresses.

    • Henry

if you haven’t noticed, it really isn’t. Remember the recycling challenge of season 3? When arguably the worst (and most unwearable)designs (the paper maxi dress)stayed? the judging was atrocious last night.

    • West Coast Laura

Mila’s dress was an absolute travesty. And nothing is worse than a travesty that also bores people to death. She’s got one trick and we have seen it PLENTY of times now. Time to go!

      • Terri

West Coast Laura, that’s what the judges used as a reason to eliminate Anthony, too. Maybe b/c he points out his flaws, it was one negative too many that tipped the balance toward him instead of Maya. Her time must be coming. She’s in the bottom so often.

    • Iman

Yes, that “Tent” dress by Mila was hideous! Plus, the black/white jacket was horrible to boot. Pity the judges are saving her and Emilio. They are both so not deserving to be there.

      Go Seth!

    • natalie

Again, as, we are together on this. Mila has her black-and-white thing figured out, but as soon as she tries something else she seems INCREDIBLY ordinary. Maya and Jay have semi-regular misses, but they are genuine creative talents. I’d give either of them the third ticket to Fashion Week ahead of Mila.

  • Lara

*sniff, sniff* Anthony may not have won Project Runway but he sure as heck won a lot of fans by being so entertaining. I will miss his presence on ths show.

    • Katja

I’ll miss him too. If I were one of those celebrities that walks red carpets in fashionable clothing, I would call up Anthony and have him dress me, like how Meryl Streep has had the adorable Chris March dress her recently. I will always respect a designer who focuses on making a woman “look like a lady” – even if he’s done similar dresses to this week’s before, it’s always flattering and feminine. Plus he just seems to have such a great attitude – I bet he’s fun to work with. Best of luck to you, Anthony!!

      • Mo

I adore Anthony, and I am afraid that he may end up like Kayne from season (3?) – holding his little dog like a purse and dressing pageant contestants. Although if that makes him happy, bless his heart, and I wish him the best.

  • Penny

I agree that the judges mocking and laughing at Jonathan seemed really immature and mean. I was taken aback.

    • Fridge

I was too. I was really glad that he stuck up for himself. I know the judges are usually pretty catty, but last night they were just mean.

      • MommaB

It looks as if the model stuck up for him as well – I’m not sure though – I don’t watch the models show.

      • Don’t Get Me Started

to MommaB – Yes, the model stuck up for him, and he rewarded her by changing models! So she was sent home…. Not cool.

ITA! I’ve watched evey season of PR and while I usually enjoy the little quips and comments, I thought Kors was just plain nasty to Jonathan. And you KNOW it was because he had the audacity to disagree with Kors’ assessment of his fabric.

      • Julia

What made it so nasty was the sadistic enjoyment they all seemed to get from beating up on the nerdy kid. It was bullying behavior.

    • Lizard

During the models’ show, Jonathan’s model, Cerri, did stand up for him, but he ditched her anyway. Bad form!

      • Don’t Get Me Started

Sorry, Lizard – I didn’t read your reply until I had already replied to MommaB above. We said the same thing.

    • Maggie

Guess Jonathan decided not to stink the pale skinned. Glad he stuck up for himself, but wish he would have stuck up for Carrie too.

  • JenR

I loved Jonathan’s print. Didn’t love the sheer grey top part of the dress, but loved the print.
I still can’t believe Emilio won with that juvenile print and boring design. I’ll miss Anthony.

    • wakeforce

Totally agree! Emilio ego is the size of Irina’s from last year, but at least she has the talent to back it up. I’ve never hated a designer more than Emilio, except for the Retro Girl from a couple years ago (sorry her name escapes me, but it starts with K)
      Loved Anthony, though)

      • Elizabeth

I think you mean Kenley – and I totally agree!

  • heromommy

They need to give Anthony his own show! Loved him and his wit..he was the only one (well maybe Seth Aaron) who had any personality at all! Emilio is insufferable..he should have been kicked off for his showgirls bikini!

    • hen

yes! i completely agree. and Oprah needs to get him on. that whole little monolouge about when he wants to come on O and when not was hysterical.

    • natalie

Anthony’s sweet and what he does he does well. His Marie Claire cover is out and looks great, by the way. He has to be happy with that.

    • vze30vcw

Lets hope its not the last we see of Anthony I am really going to miss him Michael Kors should be ashamed to berate johnathan that way he did his designs stink I wouldnt but any of his clothes when I see them I just walk by I think he is jealous of Anthony’s dress on Marie Claire cover I think someone will hire Anthony I would like to see him on ANTM he could prepare the girls for their go see Anthony you are missed. I love you.

  • Chris

Yeah, I agree that the judging was off for both the win and the auf. Missy is absolutely right about the monogram print and the over-the-top meanness to Jonathan. And I, too, will miss Anthony.

BTW, wasn’t Heidi sporting a shiny silver dress for the judging? Don’t see how you can mock others’ designs when you look like a giant disco ball.

    • Laura

      Preach it!

    • Kathy

      LOL!

    • Eden Hall

Agree. Heidi’s clothes are always awful. I don’t know how she can question a contestant’s taste when her’s is so suspect.

      • Lin

She’s probably required to wear Kors’ latest tacky collection.

    • Stacey

And what was up with that heavy chain-link necklace she wore for the runway show? It was God awful..and..very distracting. I hope it was plastic..otherwise girlfriend has well-developed neck muscles since she was able to hold her head up.

      • Tookie

I loved Heidi’s necklace. Thought Jonathan should have gone home, or Mila. Anthony for Audience Favorite!

      • Tookie

And Seth Aaron should have won the challenge.

      • tripleheart

My 11 year old daughter said the necklace was multifunctional…jewelry and a weapon for walking NYC streets.

    • Maggie

The jewlery is probably her design.

  • Fala

I’ll miss Anthony too. I don’t think they’re still doing the fan favorite contest anymore. If they were he would surely win.

  • Chris

Seth Aron was robbed – - – his outfit Zinged; Emillios was sharo though mastabatory. Jonathan’s sad sack should have been offed instead of Anthony. I do feel that Anthony ought to have had one more chance.

    • shannon

I thought Seth Aaron totally ROCKED IT!! I think his clothes are totally cool without being ridiculous…hope he wins!!!

    • Bethann

I totally agree that Seth Aaron was robbed. His outfit was impeccably put together, completely showcased his sensibility, and had a sense of fun and wit about it that Emilio’s lacked. I also thought Jonathan’s design was more deserving of auf’ing than Anthony’s. And frankly, I don’t think the judges were OMGSOMEAN to Jonathan; the dress *was* sad in a non-compelling way, and who the heck wants to wear a jacket that closes *in the back*? No one sensible, that’s who.

      • Doc

Well, I will grant you that the jacket was Fugly. I loved the dress and thought the model looked great in it and thought the print was very nice. But as to SA, while his look was cool, are you telling me there are that many women out there in the market for a patterned jacket that looks like a blown up version of a Sunday funnies comic strip and a neon yellow tie? I think not. “No one sensisble” would be caught dead in public in that.

      • tickles

to Doc…fashion is not “sensible”. Runway fashion (which is what they are supposed to be designing.) is exciting and different. It is supposed to catch your attention and waken a desire to possess. I was actually disappointed that Seth Aaron didn’t take his fabric design even further. I was expecting all the bells and whistles from him.

      • Doc

To Tickles: My comment about not being sensible was to bethann who had commented that no one sensible would have wanted Johnathan’s jacket and to that I agree. But I also agree that nobody sensible is going to want a jacket with a comic strip motif pattern. That said, many of the criticisms from judges on this show are about the lack of sensibility of a particular design, so while fashion may not be ALL sensibility, don’t tell me that it is not something critical to an overall susccess

    • RaRa

I agree Anthony should have stayed at least another week, but I thought it should have been Mila rather than Jonathan to be aufed.
