'Secret Life of the American Teenager' season finale: Tackling abortion like few teen shows have

Rhi–you are correct. Watching with your son and then being able to discuss the issues is perfect. Its what every young man/woman should be able to do with their parents. Watch the show to open their minds to the drama of it all and then discuss the issues with their mother or father. Like I have said before if this show was around when I was a teenager I wouldn’t have been so naive to sex and carelessly had it. I would have been more willing to explore the options of birth control and talking to my parents about it.
Just to be on the clear they briefly touched on alcohol in Season One. Jack started drinking and it took some friends and their parents to bring him back from it. Drugs and Alcohol are both a big part of a teenagers life when trying to “be like everyone else”, but touching those issues and straying from the point of the show about teen pregnancy wouldn’t be fair.
Ricky’s father was also an abuser and they made light of that situation and all the things that Ricky went through during a young age. They continue to put the situation into play at points when things come up. They also recently showed his mother as an abuser of drugs. It showed where she is in life today and what effect its had on Ricky. They may not put to much emphasizing on the drugs or alcohol but they do bring it into the picture from time to time.
I know that a lot of people suggest what the writers should do next and that my opinion may not matter much but I wish they would allow Andrea to have her baby and show the struggle of a person that isn’t as responsible as Amy has been when taking care of a new little one. Show the illnesses of the kids, surgeries they may need to have and the real life of paying for all of it. Show Andrea struggling so horribly that she resorts to drugs or alcohol and when her parents step in to take control of the situation because they are still legally responsible for Andrea that she looses her child and Ben also has to face challanges of custody because Andrea decided to have the child without the knowledge of Ben and she doesn’t put his name on the birth certificate so he has no legal right to the child without first going the paternity testing and court orders and such. After all is said and done I think that Andrea should turn to Amy for help dealing with everything and that in the long run Amy and Ben work things out just the way that Ricky and Andrea should work out their situation instead of Ricky being with his new “meat”. Grace and Jack should sit on the back burner for a little while and let the show focus back on sex and the consequences there after. Lauren and Madison should start to be weeded out especially since Lauren is on “10 things I hate about you” and could become confusing when you see her play two totally opposite roles on two totally different shows. Tom’s relationship should be put more on the front burner and see where things go with him and his real love. The parents that are involved in the whole show are doing good at showing real home life drama. They should remain close to the same with some improvements. Last but not least Ashley. She’s a great girl and has a great mind and should really stick to her guns when it comes to NOT having sex until the time is dead off right. She knows how “mistakes” happen and its great that the show is touching on those issues as well with someone who hasn’t had sex at all. Griffin is great and I’m proud that he has given Ashley a shoulder to lean on but talking to Ashley about the sex issues when she has already talked to her dad is getting a little to personal and he shouldn’t do that.
