Jimmy Fallon and friends not quite singing 'Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?' theme song: Strangely, yet undoubtedly, awesome

Jimmy Fallon and four of his staffers, dressed in brightly colored shirts, patterned ties, and fedoras, standing on a multi-color map of South America, doing the doo-wops from the first few bars of the Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? a cappella, over and over and over again for more than two minutes. You’d think you wouldn’t even have to watch it after that detailed description, and yet it’s somehow, perhaps wordlessly, worth your more than two minutes:

What is it, PopWatchers? The earnestness? The nostalgia? The shirts? Jimmy’s almost-dangerous-at-one-point head bobbing? The lack of lyrical payoff? Why is this so fun to watch?

    Genius.

  • paige

um- Where in the world IS Carmen Sandiego? I never knew :-(

    • Ceballos

Well, it was my understanding that she goes from Nashville to Norway, Bonaire to Zimbabwe, Chicago to Czechoslovakia and back!

      …hope that helps.

  • comixchick

I hope this is leading to a Rockapella guest appearance…

    • steelerdaddy

Which is funny considering there’s exactly one Rockapella member that sang with the group during the Carmen Sandiego heyday that’s still *with* the group.

It’s the dude in the purple shirt on Jimmy’s left. He’s mesmerizing and kinda sorta reminds of the guy who hosted the show on PBS.

Jimmy Fallon is so amazing for those of us in our 30s who recall all the stuff he loves – Saved by the Bell and now Carmen! What’s next I wonder? Something from the Wonder Years would be awesome!

    • Ramo

I was gonna write something similar. I’m 31 and I love how Jimmy does these things that people of my age can really look back on with fond nostalgia. Saved By The Bell was such a pivotal show in my youth. I still love watching those old episodes in the morning.

    • JosieG

I’ve said this previously, but Jimmy keeps finding things from my youth and bringing them back for my amusement. My inner teenage TV geek is loving it.

  • Madd

I’m constantly surprised at how much I love Jimmy Fallon’s show. I loved Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego so, so much as a kid…ah, memories.

  • TheObserver

    I’m only 24…why do I remember this?

    • Madd

Exactly- I’m 25 and my coworkers in their mid thirties were just as nostalgic about the show when I showed theme this. Just how long was Carmen Sandiego on?

      • ST

Hey Madd, Carmen was on September ’91 to October ’96 so that could explain why you remember it. I’m 28 and I nostalgic about a ton of this stuff that Jimmy brings up too.

      • Annie

I’m 31 and I used to watch it with the kids I babysat who would have been 4 or 5 years younger than me so you seem to be about the right age for it.

I’d like to propose that Jimmy Fallon pull together a “Ghost Writer” reunion – seems like that would be right up his alley.

    • Jennifer

I second this. I was kind of obsessed with Ghostwriter and for a time totally wore wore one of those pens on a string. Yes, I was a dork.

      • Jackie

Third. Had a major crush on Rob :)

    • mscisluv

      Yes to this idea!!

    • Lilly

      OMG!! Brillant idea!!

    • Andy G.

Ghost Writer actually freaked me out as a kid. The whole slime thing storyline? Terrifying. I couldn’t sleep.

    • jenn

How about Are You Afraid of the Dark?

    • JosieG

How funny. My second thought after “Oh my God I loved that show” was “What about Ghost Writer?”

  • Belle

Well she sneaks around the world from Kiev to Carolina,
She’s a sticky-fingered filcher from Berlin down to Belize,
She’ll take you for a ride on a slow boat to China,
Tell me where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?

Steal their Seoul in South Korea, make Antarctica cry Uncle,
From the Red Sea to Greenland they’ll be singing the blues,
Well they never Arkansas her steal the Mekong from the jungle,
Tell me where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?

She go from Nashville to Norway, Bonaire to Zimbabwe,
    Chicago to Czechoslovakia and back!

Well she’ll ransack Pakistan and run a scam in Scandinavia,
Then she’ll stick ‘em up Down Under and go pick-pocket Perth,
She put the Miss in misdemeanor when she stole the beans from Lima,
Tell me where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?
Oh tell me where in the world is… Oh tell me where can she be?

Ooh, Botswana to Thailand, Milan via Amsterdam,
    Mali to Bali, Ohio, Oahu…!

Well she glides around the globe and she’ll flimflam every nation,
    She’s a double-dealing diva with a taste for thievery,
Her itinerary’s loaded up with moving violations,
Tell me where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?

OMG I miss this show soooo much!!! Bring it back PBS bring it back!

  • Rebecca

I got so frustrated when they wouldn’t move past the do-wop part that I went to iTunes and listened to the whole song (yes, the theme from the show is on my iPod).

    • Lilly

It’s on my IPod too! It’s a good song for when you’re working out!

  • Sara

When do they say ribs??? Never. They never say ribs.

  • JTofRockaP

Jimbo we’re available for celebrity singing lessons. http://www.rockapella.com.

  • Vilya

I watched “Carmen Sandiego” obsessively all throughout college, and from that became a crazy Rockapella fan. I have all of their CD’s (they have a lot!) and have seen them in concert. DO IT, ROCKAPELLA!!
