'The Greatest' trailer: Carey Mulligan's in good company

Filed under: Movies and tagged: ,

The trailer for The Greatest does everything right: It gives us a charming close-up of Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan (An Education) early, plenty of shots of Pierce Brosnan in a blue dress shirt (which he should always be wearing), and a weepy, angry Susan Sarandon. Brosnan and Sarandon play the parents of a young man who dies in a car accident while on his first date with Mulligan after much eye flirting. Three months later, she shows up to tell them she’s pregnant and has nowhere to go, and they take her in. There’s a lightness about Mulligan that balances the darkness of the grieving family. “The girl who changes everything” can be an annoying, cliché construct in movies, but not when she’s played by someone as good as Mulligan. You believe her when she says she barely knew the boy, but he was the love of her life. I’m in. You?

Oscar? Oscar? (susan sarandon and Pierce Brosnan)

Eerily similar to the plot for “Moonlight Mile,” also with Sarandon. Script must’ve been good for her to make the same movie twice.

I thought the exact same thing. Good call!

    Wow, that looks fantastic!

I’m in. When does the film come out?

@Judi That’s exactly what I thought. MM was great, and hopefully this will be too.

I was interested by that cast alone (Susan Sarandon and Carey Mulligan also costar in the Wall Street sequel!) but this looks like a great film. Although, really, I’d watch Carey in anything.

Looks like a heartbreaker, but I might see it anyway, just because the cast is phenomenal.

Oh that looks so good! Carey Mulligan might beat Keira and Kate and my fav actress.

What’s the song in the trailer?

It’s called “Where the Road Meets the Sun” by Katie Herzig and Matthew Perryman Jones

Even the great cast [which includes "Nowhere Boy" and "Kickass" star Aaron Johnson] couldn’t get me to watch this sentimental dreck.

I want to watch it because the cast seems awesome but the movie seems like such a downer. I’d put it on the maybe list. Like once its out on video. I’m loving seeing Aaron Johnson in all these movies now though!

Every time I see Carey I have to resist the urge to call her Sally Sparrow. It’s the Doctor Who geek in me. But I might have to see this just for her. I normally hate these kind of movies.

That is by a mile my favorite episode of Dr. Who, and I never realized it was Carey who played Sally Sparrow. Thank you for pointing that out to me!

I don’t like to see tear-jerker movies – I do not feel good after a catharti cry in a theater, I just feel sad and embarassed- but the cast is amazing and I felt moved even watching the 2 minute trailer. Perhaps I’ll see at home one day.

Welcome! Blink is brilliant. It;s the only Doctor-lite episode I genuinely love. It’s largely due to Carey’s performance as Sally. I’m so happy to see her become a big movie star!

I’ve been waiting for this movie to come out for a year now. So glad it’s finally arriving in theaters. Can’t wait to see it!

I watched it online last month..I loved it! Really great acting all around.
