'Ugly Betty': Justin kissed a boy last night...and we liked it!!!

On last night’s episode of Ugly Betty, Justin took one big gay step out of the closet and finally kissed a boy! It’s been a long journey for the flamboyant teen and feels fitting now that Betty is sadly coming to an end.

The scene in question was handled awfully well. I love the awkward shoving between Justin and his pal. It’s one of those moments where you can tell they both wanted to connect with each other but just aren’t sure exactly how. I also have to give props to creator Silvio Horta and the producers for putting something so brave and progressive on network television. I can’t think of another series that has tackled coming out with someone so young. It’s an important and delicate issue that should be addressed more often.

What did you think of Justin’s kiss? Are you as impressed with Ugly Betty?

I thought the lead up to the kiss was handled perfectly (the way they were tentatively touching each other), and I thought the kiss itself was fantastic. (I wondered what the deal was with the weird colorful stained glass in the acting class, but then I realized it would make for a greater contrast when they kissed and the rest of the world went gray, as Marc had described.)

I was actually really sad when Austin dropped out of the class the next morning. I’d be REALLY angry if I didn’t believe that they’re bringing Austing back before the series finale.

And although his references to being alone and depressed were funny, it’d be cool if Marc found somebody too. (I guess I missed the episode where he broke up with the clingy guy he hooked up with at the Bahamas.)

I think that abcs ending the show great but too bad its ending. Like The Kiss thing they acted it out soo great that I bet Many People were like ” ” I was especiallcy when “austin” said that wouldn’t justin be in love with him too. and after they kissed why Didnt Justin Say Like Comback or I love because it looked like he liked it but then the next day hes all sad. ABC better bring austin back so justin’s part of the story could end well.

THe kiss itself was so traumatic. Not because it wasn’t real but because it totally changed the way BOTH boys felt about themselves. A HUGE deal when you are a teenager. Justin is so lucky to have Mark in his life. They could have gone the way of creepy older gay guy torments younger not-out-yet guy but they have given Mark so much more dimension by bringing him and Justin together. It will be interesting to see if he comes out to his family before the show is over. There are many ethnic communities in the US that do NOT tolerate homosexuals. I am so glad this show is going out as fantastic as it began.

the reason the eberything went black and might was because marc told justin that when you really love someone and you kiss, it’s real, and it’s as if everything else goes black and white, and your the only to people left in the world…i only figured that out after watching the episode for the 2nd and actuallt listening to what marc was telling justin, did that help you?

Ugly Betty handled this awesomely… It was a sensitive, thoughtful, realistic and inspiring conclusion to Justin’s coming out journey. I’m looking forward to seeing him bust out of the closet in these last few episodes, and discussing it with his family.

I think this site is slowly starting to merge with that of GLAAD. I mean, there’s nary a day that goes by without another pointless EW update or feature about something having to do with gay culture. This agenda-pushing is pretty sickening. And yes it is an agenda. Can anyone really imagine Tim Stack writing a fawning blog post about how a character from a TV show just converted to Christianity?

    • Amanda

There are all different types of people, John.

    • baj24

Oh get over it. If you have such a problem with it, then why bother even reading this article and commenting?

    • Allan

Several of the writers have identified themselves as Christian recently – Slezack and Jensen among them – so I don’t think there’s any prejudice against Christians.

      • J.B.

I agree, the LOST reviews discuss a lot of biblical and religious references because they are related to the content of the show. Ugly Betty is set at a fashion magazine and has multiple gay characters.

    • cheese

Um…I’m guessing the thing that people need to understand that there is a difference between the things that get posted on EW. It’s a mix between blog posts and actual articles. It’s hard to distinguish sometimes, but this one is clearly a blogpost. And blogposts give the freedom to basically write about anything that you want to write about. You won’t see this published in the publication, there is no “meat” to this story. In other words, this isn’t a real “article”

triple thank you elliot! I couldn’t have said it better myself…I would add though, that thousands of years of persecution have been handed out by Christians, not gays. If you’re not Christian, you’re worthless/inferior/evil. Is that right, John?

    • eliott256

Yes, because we all know that being gay is the same as being a Christian and that Christians have faced years of discrimination on TV and in the real world *eye roll*

      • davey

Thank you Eliott256. I was about to say the same thing :)

      • tvgirl48

        Double thank you. Perfectly stated.

    • but

I have nothing else to say but: John go away…

    • lalala

Wow John, you go on a website devoted to the entertainment industry, and you’re surprised by all the articles involving gay people? Someone isn’t too bright… You can always ignore these articles if you won’t want the “gay agenda” “pushed” onto you, but then again, you don’t sound bright to begin with.

    • MarkG

And what is your agenda, as a Christian? To repress the whole entertainment galaxy to the point that they bring “Leave It To Beaver” back? Good luck with that!!

    • Brett

Dude, the Christian AGENDA is everywhere. I don’t think that EW needs to cover it. You all like to shove it in our faces every chance you get.

      • Jen

Brett, you’re going to hell. lol.

    • crispy

Puh-leeze, John. Twilight, arguably Entertainment Weekly’s favorite topic, is a Mormon parable about abstinence. Their Entertainer of the Year, Sandra Bullock, just won the Oscar for her role as a born-again Christian. This week’s cover features two heterosexual actors portraying a heterosexual couple raising a heterosexual family.
The gay coverage here is limited to a few blog posts a week. But it sure seems like you’ve sought them out.

      • Ceballos

“Twilight” is “arguably” EW’s favorite topic? That’s a generous use of the word “arguably.” ;)

    • ****

Yes John, just like all those civil rights activists pushed their sickening agenda in the 60s and all those women who stood up for equal treatment had their repulsive agenda in the 70s. All these disgusting minorties and their detestable agendas, well…someone should just herd them all into concentration camps, don’t you think? Then the world could be populated solely by decent white heterosexual christian men and everything would be so much less nauseating, ya know?

      • M

Yes… However, in the absence of women, men (like in jail) will turn to homsexuality. Thereby creating the situation all over again.

    • Robbyrob

      Dear John,

Sheesh! I guess anything that you don’t like is an agenda but what you support is a just cause? What crap! What agenda are we talking about here? A positive portrayal of young gay youth? Justin is a great character and I applaud ABC for following through with his developement. Tim Stack happens to be gay…so what? There are plenty of writers who often bring up their christian beliefs…if you don’t like it…then don’t read it. The Christian agenda is 10 times greater than any gay agenda you think is trying to turn you into a friend of Dorothy. Kirk Cameron’s anti-evolution crusade is certainly an agenda. Tim Tebow’s bible verses under his eyes…you betcha. Texas changing all of their textbooks to a much more conservative outlook? Yep. The Mississippi School canceling a whole prom rather than let 2 of it’s female students go together? GLAAD? Well how about Focus on the Family? They promote the ‘christian family’ only and everything else is treated like the devil’s spawn. The Morman church hugged and supported Marie Osmond after her son’s suicide…but what is the real reason why Michael Osmond left this Earth? Could he not deal with his true self against a church that is so associated with his family? The rate of suicide of young gay youth is soaring because of attitudes like you John. Sorry, that is not an agenda…it’s someone living his or her life. Tim Stack is a great writer and he has certainly shown himself to be a big fan of Ugly Betty, not just of Justin’s sexuality plot. Sounds like you don’t even watch Ugly Betty so why are you even commenting? Why don’t you go out and do something manly…or you can contact Kirk Cameron and join in on his agen…er…um…crusade. I THINK YOU HAVE AN AGENDA OF SAYING EVERYTHING THAT’S GAY POSITIVE IS AN AGENDA!

    • danw

I’m a Christian and I say, woo hoo! To quote a line from a novel whose title eludes me: If it’s love, the Lord don’t mind; there’s already enough hate in the world.

      • CarlyG

        Thank you! Amen. :)

…and now I have to find that novel. Ack! :)

  • Josh

Well, then I think the straight agenda pushing needs to stop too. Hear that EW? No more talk about men kissing women. I just don’t need it. I can’t go on this site without something every day about oh this man kissed this woman last night. It just disgusts me. Oh no, wait. It doesn’t affect me at all. Nevermind.

On a side note, John, if this agenda sickens you so, why are you reading a story about a show that features several gay characters?

    • Elizabeth

He’s on here because he’s standing up and saving his country, one narrow-minded comment on an entertainment magazine’s webpage at a time. Once he converts all of us everything will be better.

I’m not even a casual viewer of the show, but I thought it was done very well, even as a heterosexual, spinster white catholic with freckles.

      • Joshuax

Hey :) I wanted to say this to John!
John most people who have a problem with sexuality Tests say that they are uncomfatble with there own sexuality !!!! Oh and i loved when justin kissed him i was at the end of my seat,iv waited ages for him 2 do that lol :)

Oh sorry if i butted in but just had 2 speak up :) xxxxx

      • Joshuax

Ooops im meant “uncomfortable” LOL :) xxxx

    • Lu

Agreed. The straight agenda with their Bachelor blogs and Rpatz/Kstew watch are just getting ridiculous. Give me more queer news any day of the week. ;)

  • Leo

Before anyone goes for the obvious “Dawson’s Creek” reference, Kerr Smith was in his late twenties when he portrayed the role of Jack McPhee.

Justin Suarez and Mark Indelicato are both actual teenagers, and younger than any other character in TV history to kiss another boy.

ABC handled it superbly. It’s just a shame that they’re pulling the plug on one of the more progressive and hilarious shows on television.

  • Matt

Absolutely incredible last night. It reminded me of every awkward experience I had when I was sorting out my sexuality.

Props to Horta and to Mark Indelicato for making this scene and this storyline work.

  • Greg

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!! That was done really well — they nailed the fears, adrenaline, and awkward romance of such a situation. Way to go “Ugly Betty”!!

  • Allan

This scene was handled incredibly well. I also liked the way Mark has become Justin’s confidante in such a sensitive way. When Justin said I like someone in acting class, Mark said what’s”their”name?

  • Bev

Good for them. Love that it wasn’t heavily promoted, it was a nice sweet surprise.

  • MiaS

    This was GREAT!
And when Mark was talking to Justin before the play, that was so touching.
It is a shame that ABC has mishanded this show by messing with its schedule.
Ugly Betty is one of the best written show on TV and certainly one of the best casts too.

    • Lu

I agree. They handled this so well and it really made me sad that this show is ending.

  • Jacob

Why is this placed under the category of “Gay/Lesbian/Kathy Griffin”? I get the first two, but why is Kathy Griffin lumped into this? Is there something I’ve been missing?

    • crispy

They use that tag all the time for any gay/lesbian topics. I think it’s quite funny myself.

  • Jenna

It’s a crime that Betty’s been cancelled. One of the few great, innovative shows left on TV.

  • Katja

That was fantastic. I can’t say I watch Ugly Betty (just because I don’t feel like I should watch more TV than I already do), but even without any context, that reminded me SO much of my own teenage awkward/hinting behavior with guys when we wanted to kiss each other. That scene gave me little butterflies as soon as non-Justin bumped Justin and started getting flirty, just because it was such a perfect portrayal. I really enjoyed the memories; it’s been a long time since I felt fluttery like that because I’ve been lucky enough to have married my perfect guy and we’re a bit past the awkward stage. :) Beautiful scene, regardless of what gender the characters are and what their sexual/love preferences are. This has really put me in a good mood now!

    • CarlyG

Yes! I like the way you worded that.

I so enjoyed their scene and the awkwardness almost-touching and then finally the kiss!

So sad now for Justin. Hope they bring Austin back before the finale and let them have a happy ending.

Love the way Mark has grown over the seasons, especially this year. Such a great mentor to Justin!

  • c.e.

I’m amazed they didn’t bring up the funny lines last night. My favorite was Hilda asking Betting for a reaction to the dress she was wearing “I hope it doesn’t make me look like a prostitute cause my boyfriend’s cousin is a prostitute, and she’s coming so I don’t want to offend her.”

  • Shaun

Handled beautifully, and a long time coming. The red herring thing with Lily was strange, but otherwise, a really big step for Justin, “Betty” and ABC! Well done!
