'The Antonio Treatment': Yet another addictive HGTV show?

I am addicted to HGTV, which is strange considering I don’t have a bathroom that needs to be remodeled, my 18th floor apartment doesn’t have a backyard to landscape, and I’m certainly not looking for a second home in some far-off land (as awesome as that would be). But despite the fact that I’m not the target audience, I often find myself getting sucked into marathons of House Hunters or watching in awe as David Bromstad does his thing on Color Splash.

I’m not the only one. HGTV has some sort of allure to it, because I have several friends (not to mention my mom and dad) who also are hooked. There’s just something about seeing a home go from drab to fab that’s utterly fascinating.

Now, there’s another potentially addictive show to add to the roster.

The Antonio Treatment premieres tonight at 10 p.m. with back-to-back episodes. Starring last season’s Design Star winner Antonio Ballatore, the series will show Antonio and his crew transform dull homes, offices and more into original yet practical spaces. In the premiere episodes, Antonio will turn a family room into a functional workspace for a deaf man and his wife, and will follow that up by re-doing Mario Lopez’s gym.

For those who don’t know him, Antonio is ever-so-slightly controversial, due to the fact that he doesn’t fit the mold of what most people expect a designer to look like Tattoos! His clothes don’t match! He also edged out Design Star fan favorite Dan Vickery, whose work was much more subdued and less in-your-face. Obviously the Design Star judges loved him, but we’ll have to wait and see if viewers warm up to this unconventional designer.

Here’s Antonio:

So, will you tune into watch The Antonio Treatment? Do you also find yourself losing weekends under the spell of Candice Olson on Divine Design?

I love the “HG”. Where do they find so many hot male carpenters? Yes, Carter can. Bromdstadt is so talented and so nice to watch.

i know clinton! all the guys are hot, lol. scott is my fave though and bromdstadt. he seems so sweet and i’m sure is fun to work with. for a while i thought the guy on carter can and scott from income property were the same person before i learned scott’s name haha. they look like they could be related, but both are equally hot.

Where is Suzanne Whang? We want her back on House Hunters & House Hunters International!

      Worst voiceovers ever… seriously.

She always sounded so sassy, like everything she said was some kind of sarcasm. Love it.

I love HGTV, but I’m worried that their new line-up of reality-style shows is pulling too far away from the before-and-after shows that I love so much. Plus, after seeing the preview a few months back for Antonio’s show, I’m not excited. He’s definitely Candice Olsen! I don’t think he has a feel for the whole space like the other designers do. Here’s hoping he gets better.

      I meant NOT Candice Olsen.

Didn’t care for Antonio on Design Star so I won’t watch his show. Wish Dan Vickery had won. Don’t care for the house hunter style shows but do love the before and after ones such as Designed to Sell.

I’ll be watching Antonio Project – while I love HGTV, there are so many cookie-cutter designers featured, and Antonio definintely breaks that mold! Dan did some nice things on Design Star, and I’m sure they’ll still use him in future (I think he got the web show also…), but it was the same old, same old with him. It’ll be great to have something a little different in the mix. :)

This will probably be the first of these kinds of shows I will be watching, and it will be precisely because Antonio is not your typical perfectly coiffed, perfectly manicured, effete, overtly and fastidiously prickly TV designer/decorator. He looks and acts like a regular dude, who just happens to have an eye for design. And he is hot in a more approachable way, not like the pretentiously Hollywood twinks of those shows…

Can’t wait! By the way, the series actually premieres tomorrow night, Sunday, with a back-to-back block from 10 pm ET – midnight. The one at 11 pm ET features Mario Lopez from EXTRA – Antonio will make over his boxing gym.

I miss the G in HGTV. Seems like they don’t do any gardening anymore. They do still show some “total yard makeover” shows, but I think they’re missing something….

HGTV really is addictive, especially “House Hunters”. It’s like, “Oh, I’m just going to turn this on for background noise,” but then you find yourself totally invested in the show.

    • mari

I know and then you start “arguing” with the buyers on the show as to what house they should buy :D

  • Nancy

I used to be addicted to HGTV but now I can’t get enough of “Moving Up” marathons on Sundays on TLC.

    • Maggie

I love that show too! Doug Wilson is not only a great designer, but has a wicked sense of humor too.

  • LG

I love hgtv, it’s always on in the background. @Nancy I love me some Moving Up too. It was perfect right before football

  • susan

I love HGTV. I’m in fact watching a rerun of Color Splash right now. I love David. Although Antonio wasn’t my pick I’ll check him out.

  • marciekr

Yes, I am addicted. My husband will turn it on at night if nothing else is on and I’ll keep watching until it goes to paid programming.

  • Sara

I love David Bromstad. He’s so pretty, and such a good artist. I’m not brave enough to emulate his choice of colours, but I do like watching him implement his designs.

House Hunters is a good show as well. My sister got me addicted to it. And I like Moving Up on Sundays too (Doug’s aging well, though the haircut looks stupid) but I don’t know that they’re making new episodes, they all seem like reruns.

  • Geo

I’m all for a new kind of host, but Antonio was painful to watch and listen to on Design Star. I made it through ten minutes of his special, then had to turn it off. Ugh.

    • Emily Jean

I love the Antonio Treatment, as should any other person, because it shows creativity and a way to be different than the rest of the world. I am only 15, and I watch his show all the time, inspiring me to be different and don’t be afraid to show my personality as much as possible <3
