'Captain America': Hugo Weaving to play the Red Skull?

Hugo-Weaving-red-skullImage Credit: Marvel Entertainment; Ed Millington/Retna LtdBy now, we’ve all heard that the casting race to play Captain America has narrowed to three eerily handsome actors. But what about the Red Skull, Cap’s archnemesis, the devious mastermind who loves national socialism and hates America? According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hugo Weaving is in final talks to play the Skull in the 2011 film.

Weaving has a great track record when it comes to blockbuster franchises: His malevolent Agent Smith was the only part of The Matrix that stayed awesome in the sequels, and his voice performance as Megatron in the Transformers films hits a similar register of deliciously pure evil.

Playing the Skull will either require a red mask, a mountain of red makeup, or a lot of facial motion-capture CGI. Fortunately, Weaving already managed to carve a fascinating character from behind a mask in V for Vendetta. Also, you have to admit that Weaving and the Skull share a certain cranial similarity. Don’t laugh: Between Lord of the Rings and The Matrix, that’s one of the most lucrative foreheads in history.

The Red Skull’s a weird mix of villain tropes – an evil genius, a combat supersoldier, a grotesque science freak, and a Friend Of Adolf. I’m pretty confident that Weaving will be able to find the right mix of over-the-top evil and magnetic charisma. What do you think, readers? Will we all be disappointed by anyone but Christoph Waltz as the Skull?

I think Weaving is a PERFECT choice for the Red Skull for all the reasons you mentioned.

He WAS the only think that remained awesome in the “Matrix” sequels (although even he couldn’t really salvage that stupid “Dragonball Z”-like showdown at the end of “Revolutions.”)

    Yes please.

I love, love, love Hugo Weaving and will see pretty much anything that he is in. V for Vendetta is my favorite, so I know he would be fantastic as Red Skull.

So who are the three candidates to play Captain America??

  • harry

Mike Vogel, Garrett Hedlund, and Chris Evans.

Casting Hugo Weaving in anything is a brilliant choice!
They need to change up their choices for Captain America. None of them have enough star power to carry a possible franchise.

Weaving can do no wrong. Waltz is kind of obvious and no doubt could play the part, but we know Weaving is capable of going to the “over the top” meglomania whilst remaining non-pantomime as well as bringing the subtlety we’d like to see in the better comic book adaptions. As for Captain America, the 3 choices all seem terrible to me, although I’m a big fan of Chris Evans, far better than his body of work may suggest and the only thing, possibly along with Chiklis and Laurence Fishbourne’s voice to come out of the abyssmal Fantastic Four movies relatively unscathed. Still Christopher Reeve, Hugh Jackman, Michael KEaton and even Toby (born to play nerdy Parker) Maguire were all thought of the same way by many and worked out extremely well.

I still say Marvel should pull rank and get Keneth Brannagh to give up Chris Hemsworth from Thor to be Captain America. His brief stint as Kirk’s dad in Star Trek was a perfect an audition as there could be. He even looks good in blue.

I can’t believe MADS MIKKELSEN is not a serious contender for this role! come on!

I’d go for Christopher Waltz anytime to play the Red Skull. And l can’t wait for Scarlett Johanssen to join the cast as the Black Widow. Any chance for Angelina Jolie to be part of the franchise?

      I love him too

As who? I can onlyy really see her as maybe She-Hulk, in the Avengers movie(s) / Incredible Hulk sequels. Other than that she doesn’t seem to fit any of the other prime avengers. Can’t see Black widow in the first Captain America movie either, but I’m looking forward to Samuel L Jackson’s Nick Fury in all of the Marvel Moviverse films.

Weaving is perfect for the Red Skull. I read they’re now considering Tatum Channing for Captain America which I’m not too thrilled about but at least he looks the part. Can’t wait for all of this build up to the Avengers – it’s going to be HUGE!

I would like to see the movie to watch Hugo Weaving play RedSkull, but I agree with “therealeverton” about the role for Captain America, but for different reasons. One reason is that Marvel Comics likes to cross their heros and villians in other comics. I believe that someone other than Chris Evans should play the part of Captain America because he has already played in Fantastic Four. It may or it may not happen but I would like to see crossings of the comic books in movies, meaning Captain America meets the Fantastic Four or Spiderman meets Captain America. When movies like that goes into production, I don’t think anyone wants 2 superheors played by the same actor/actress.
