As any regular reader of these on-the-scene American Idol recaps knows, there is quite often a big ole difference between what a performance sounds like when it’s blasted through the juiced-up speakers in the Idoldome, and the subtle pitchy imperfections that can trickle through your TV speakers. The same is certainly true for the semi-finals’ Idolcupola, and the judges have said as much these past three weeks. Until last night, though, I hadn’t realized that there’s another disconnect between what y’all see on the HD plasma and what we see live and in person when it comes to the semi-finals — namely, the living person. Exhibit A: Michael Lynche.
I know he looks big on your TV, and I know his nickname is “Big” Mike. But, really and truly, as I discovered sitting in on my second night of EW’s exclusive look inside the Idol semi-finals, the dude is BIG. As in, he has presence on that stage, and as Ryan pointed out, he knows how to use his size to deliver a song. But the camera can do a funny thing; it can make the very big (Big Mike) and the very small (Teeny Aaron) seem somehow more average, more normal, especially when they’re performing alone without a point of comparison standing right next to them.
This is all a wordy preamble to this pretty simple point: In that room, Big Mike’s “This Woman’s Work” killed with a capital K, and that has as much to do with the sheer size and force of the man himself as the impeccable vocals of his performance. When I watched it back on TV, though, the quick editing and swooping cameras somehow neutered all that, which is, I suspect, at least partly why Idol guru extrordinaire Michael Slezak and my mother both told me they thought Big Mike was kinda cheesy. I’m not saying the new father delivered anything close to Mindy Doo’s “My Funny Valentine” or D’Archie’s “Imagine”; I’m just saying that, from where I sat, Randy’s shock, Ellen’s enthusiasm, Kara’s tears, and Simon’s “best of the semi-finals” praise all made sense to me.
Okay, end of mini-essay. Honestly, that’s kinda the best behind-the-scenes insight I have to give you, since I’m worried that the massive info-dump from yesterday’s Top 8 women recap left me without much new to say. I still couldn’t see the Coke Anteroom, nor the Top 8 women, so my attention was by default focused on Ryan and the judges. They all trickled in before the show in more-or-less the order you would expect: Kara and Ryan first, then Randy, then Ellen (again firmly latched to wife Portia de Rossi), then, with a minute to go before airtime, Simon.
Ryan’s oddly drawn-out opening caused Simon to say “Ryan” with a heavy sigh about the time the host slowly sauntered by Carol Brady Alex Lambert. After Lee Dewyze ably performed “Fireflies,” Kara giggled with Simon while Ryan gave out the belt-impaired rocker’s digits. The show went to its first ad break, and Debbie the Stage Manager ordered everyone to stay where they were and stay silent so Ryan could record a couple radio promos for the follow week’s two hour Top 12 performance show. The conceit: Ryan was at that very moment watching the Idol crew construct the Idoldome in the studio in preparation for the Top 12. Smoke and mirrors, kids, that’s all showbiz is, smoke and mirrors.
It was also during this promo that Ryan dropped the news that the Top 12 will be singing the music of the Rolling Stones, instantly causing me to wonder whether Bowersox will tackle “Wild Horses,” or go for broke with a left-field-for-her choice like “Satisfaction.” (That noise you heard, by the way, was Tyler “Kristen Baldwin once called me Mick Jagger ugly hot” Grady bellowing over his premature ouster to the Idol gods.)
During Alex Lambert’s performance, all the Idol vocal coaches and music arrangers sitting in front of me nodded in approval. Behind me, Portia murmured, “He’ll go through.” Alex walked past us as Tim Urban miraculously sang “Hallelujah” with minimal bloodshed, and arranger Michael Orland gave the mulletted one a high five. After Urban finished, Simon promptly walked off stage and up to fiancé Mezhgan Hussainy, greeting her with three rhythmic hand claps. Randy, Ellen, and Kara all stepped offstage for makeup touch ups, which is kinda impressive considering the makeup artists did their job with almost no direct light.
I reported yesterday that I had no impression of any feud or ill feeling between Ellen and Simon, and I stand by that assertion again today. I did detect, however, that Ellen isn’t totally comfy yet with her new Idol family in general. Once again, whenever she was off stage, Ellen often stood around chatting just with Portia, looking very much like the nervous new kid in school. (This certainly comes through on camera too, when Randy, Kara, Simon, and Ryan all start kidding around and Ellen just stares into the middle distance.) At this point, Ellen and Portia both clearly feel most comfortable around Ryan, shocking me not a whit.
Randy and Simon interrupted Alex’s post-performance video interview to give him more praise. After Andrew Garcia tackled maybe the least vocally challenging Christina Aguilera song ever, Randy, Ellen, and Kara milled about while Ryan quickly went over his prompter text with a dude at the soundboard near my seat. Ellen said she thought Casey James sounded great on “You’ll Think of Me,” and vocal coach Dorian Holley said, rather full-voiced, “He diiiiid.” Dorian even followed Casey up the stairs to the Coke Vestibule while Aaron Kelly tried mightily to seem credible singing “I’m Already There.” At this point, I also noticed that Cory the Warm Up Comic was rather emphatically leading all the audience applause from backstage.
The rest of the show unfolded with minimal fuss or fanfare through Todrick Hall’s Gleeky ”Somebody To Love.” The judges more-or-less remained in their seats for the rest of the show, in fact, until Big Mike took to the stage. He was barely past the falsetto opening of “This Woman’s Work” when Kara started her increasingly full-bodied reaction to the song. First, she started whispering to Simon. Then, she leaned in and pointed directly at Mike. And finally, she stood up with such force that I half expected her to exclaim, “Can I get an A-MEN?!” By the time Mike was over, the entire studio was following suit.
Ryan gave out Big Mike’s numbers, the recap package started playing, and Kara, still kinda weepy, gave Simon a big bear hug. Even well after the 19 Entertainment logo chirped the night’s episode to a close, Kara was backstage raving to anyone who would listen about Mike’s performance. My snark demon Smirkelstiltskin started to smell blood in the water after Kara borrowed some kleenex from what seemed like a random woman — that is until Kara mentioned that, at 39, she’s been trying hard to have a baby of her own. Then it all made every kind of sense, and the bracing truth of genuine feeling caused Smirkel to shrink to the size of a janky pecan.
Tell me, Idoloonies, what did you make of Big Mike’s big night? Do you think Ellen will become a full member of the Idol clubhouse, or is she destined to remain the quirky cousin staying over for the summer?
Also: Tonight, of course, we learn who will make up Idol‘s Top 12, and afterwards the lucky dozen will be immediately whisked across town to the annual Top 12 party, where they will face a small army of press, including EW, for their first and last interviews as contestants before they’re eliminated (or make the final two). What would you like us to ask them, both individually and as a group?

I think I wish the vocal coaches were the actual judges.
Sho, you right!
i have other lady who have a creche, she lady love baby and on her chreche she have 100 babies, from 1 month to 9 months, she don’t have a nice building and the toys.
I knew that had to be why Kara was crying. Any mother or woman who’s struggled to have a baby could see it immediately.
I agree. My wife and I have been trying to have a child for over 6years now with no success. We are even going through adoption as well. As soon as my wife heard the song and saw Kara crying, she was tearing up too.
AWWW I wish you and your wife much success on your journey to be parent’s peace and blessing
Best wishes to you and your wife. Our perfect and beautiful miracles of science were born 10 1/2 months ago (3rd try). And one of them was howling in my ear last night at 9:50pm ET, so I turned off the TV because I couldn’t hear Big Mike anyway. I’ll have to hunt the performance down on Youtube.
Good luck to you and your wife!
That is very sweet and touching. Good luck to you and may you be stellar parents.
The hubby and I got married at 30. We ended up adopting two fantastic kids that we love with all our hearts. Best of luck!
Agreed, it was a bit painfully (I had empathy for her pain, I’ve never been in her “shoes”)obvious. I was loving the performance before I saw her reaction but that added goosebumps to the mix, even though I don’t like her all that much, that kind of emotion is strong.
I was moved as well – especially when Simon was uncharateristically supportive and protective -while kara composed herself – it was obvious this song touched her in such a perosnal way.
completely agree. I knew instantly that was what was going on.
Maybe one vocal coach as a judge. These days, Idol is about looking for more than just the best singer.
congrads mike .. u killed it .. anyone who is a fan of soul singer maxwell work, would be proud of mike lynche
Kara, you really need to take some of your own advise and get real…
I have to change the channel because you are so annoying. Paula was Paula… No matter how she came across… you are just Phoney…. Really…
ps…. Who are you going cuddle up to next year when Simon is gone…Randy nor Ellen seems to be bonding with you fakeness!
Couldn’t agree more with you! Kara is a PHONEY, that is the word that i’ve been trying to come up with. Pure phoney. Even when she “cried” there were really no tears. For all the pretended drama, she barely had a mist in her eyes. Phoney baloney plastic banana is what she is and I would be happy to see her go. Hope that she does not go with Simon, however.
I agree. That was all phoney baloney. I know what I look like when I cry. I know what other people look like when they’re weeping. Tears run down your face and your eyes get red. That was all acting. And bad acting at that. Not real crying AT ALL. What in the world is that woman doing up there??
I like Kara. So what! Who cares!
I completely disagree. Kara has been giving some of the best criticism/advice to contestants this year. I actually have agreed with her more than Simon this season. As Vary said she started crying at the beginning of the song and we only saw the trail end of it. Who cares anyway. She is giving good advice (way better than Randy this year) and Mike did great anyways.
Kara is a phoney.I can’t stand her! I knew that from last year. You can tell Ellen doesn’t care to much for her by her expressions.
I am up and down on Kara, but this last night she was being genuine with the tears… even if the performance did not knock my socks off like it did her.
I think Kara trying to be cutesy like Paula is the biggest problem. I think her advice is up and down, but could stand her a lot more if she would quit trying to play footsie with Simon and quit acting like Paula. I also think Randy needs some new lines… or even A new line to add into his repertoire of about three lines.
I love Ellen, though.
I’m with Frank – this was real. The song and the performance clearly touched a nerve. And why not? The performance was spot on. Pleased for Big Mike, he’s just stopped this year from being a Crystal B will win snooze fest into a competition.
Kara is the most affected person to ever disgrace American Idol, and even if her tears were heartfelt, they came across as another piece of fakery.
I suspect she either miscarried recently, or is really having trouble getting pregnant. her reaction to this song – and Simon’s protective attitude while she tried to compose herself – made me feel that this song touched her personally.
Amen to that. I was hoping I wasnt the only one who saw through Kara’s Bull_ _ it. If you’ll notice, everytime something good is said(especially by Ellen), Kara always has to one-up her comments. Also, Simon needs to scoot the _uck over. He is not even near his microphone. He might as well be in Karas lap. Not that I remotely care but they brought it up last night. Kara is also taking full advantage of his closeness, even going as far as to mention Simons fiance, which is irrelevant to any part of Idol. As for Ellen, stay just as and where you are. Please do not change and make yourself as outright stupid and fake as the other judges. They seem to have already picked the winners. But surely not based on vocals. This years Idol SUCKS!
Hater!
I *so* agree! The only reason she “cried” was because Simon totally slammed her moments before, basically telling her to “shut up” with her nonsense. All of a sudden, Kara needed to have good attention again. I sound so mean, and truly – if Kara really wants a child and is trying, I wish her only the best in her personal non-Idol life. But on Idol, I don’t like her advice or attitude one bit. Sorry.
There is no need to be sorry because your previous 5 posters are all DISGUSTING human beings with no souls who hate yourselves and everyone around you. To hate a woman for being emotional over her desire to conceive a child speaks to someone who is the type of person who should cease to exist
I agree, Kara is so phoney, it is PAINFUL to watch her. And the way she cuddles/sucks up to Simon makes me want to shoot my TV. Poor Ellen, she is being shut out of the “club,” and I can see that she is not amused by Kara’s shenanigans.
The BEST line was when Katy Perry said she wanted to throw her Coke in her (Kara’s) face during auditions.
Kara is ruining Idol for me. Everything she does is annoying and no one is going to convince me that those tears were real. She’ll do anything for attention. She probably already saw Mike perform at rehearsal so got herself all prepared for the sob fest.
Regardless of whether or not she’s a “Phoney,” she’s a great judge! Her feedback is almost always right on. She brings an actual vocal musician’s perspective, and remember she’s a hit producer. Who care’s if she’s phoney, she’s right!
I wish they would ban certain songs from the choices. I’m tired of hearing the same old “Hallelujah” and such. On a different note, I’d like to see Portia do some judging for the show as her character from Better off Ted
THAT’S funny!
Even better — as her character from Arrested Development. She’d put Kara’s “cougar” role to shame!
And what if they had David Cross to act as Tobias! God I miss that show…
Although Ellen represents the “every” person, and she is improving, the show is not the same without Paula. Even though Paula was sometimes over the top, she would burst out emotions that were so encouraging to the performers. Simon looks ready to leave, and he has been saying that he will be doing something with Paula in the future. I think that four judges is too many, and it drags out too many comments. That is why the singers have less time to perform, sometimes have to rush and the show runs overtime. Viewers cannot complain about the results unless they vote. I still love this show, and I always look forward to watching and TIVO-ing it !! GOOD LUCK TO ALL!!!
I believe the judging is mostly about song choice this year. It gets very tired. I like the 16 year old male and they think each song is too OLD for him. Kara thought she was the group shrink but Simon stopped that game after she critiqued the 16 year old for singing an age in appropriate song. I thought she let the tears out because he berated her a few performers earlier. Randy is all over the map this year. He seems like he is so out in left field. He needs to be more positive once in a while…DUDE.
Maybe ask them if at this stage they are getting any advice about song selection, wardrobe or hair from family and friends. Is that even allowed?
I think they dont need 4 judges. I really thounght the original 3 were grant combo. The show is going down when Simon leaves. I always enjoyed Idol and even voted. I dont feel as passionate this year with Ellen on it. She serves no purpose….Grandy
ELLEN IS THE ONLY REAL PERSON ON THERE.
the name of the song is “this woman’s work” not “worth”.
And it’s ‘My FUNNY Valentine’
I think (hope) Ellen doesn’t interact with the others during the taping because she’s trying to be professional. Last year was crazy all 4 judges chatted with each other during performances. Remember Meagan getting in the judges faces during her farewell song. This was because she was so annoyed that they couldn’t pay attention for a 90 sec song!! So thank-you Ellen for raising the bar, and making the other judges more attentive.
Agree that Ellen is adding a bit of professionalism. On the other hand, she is still fumbling w/wooden humor and lame jokes. Still a deer in the headlights.
Ellen just doesn’t know music well enough. We learn from the judges and it’s their knowledge of the craft that is interesting. Sure Ellen is like me but I don’t want to see me. I want to see someone who can tell me something I didn’t know.
How is Ellen like you or like “every man” as another poster said. Is every man a millionaire celebrity? But I agree, I don’t want to see “every man” as a judge. I want competency and a knowledge of music technique, production etc.
Really, you think they hear music better than you? Its easy to hear someonesthat is off pitch or just really sounds bad. Have you heard some of the crap songs out now. Alot of them suck. I feel a person really does not have to have a great voice to get a contract from people like Simon or Randy. A person just has to look good. In the studio, a voice can and usually is manipulated so much to make it sound good. That is the main reason I like Adam Lambert last year. I dont care what anyone else says, he was awesome. He was not pitchy, and was an overall excellent vocalist. After him, no wonder Simon is leaving. Even he knows a voice like Adams will unlikely be heard on the Idol stage again.
Cynthia- I completelty agree!! You don’t have to sing good at all anymore. The studios can make anyone sound good. But Adam actually sounds good LIVE and can sings anything without his voice being manipulated. Same with David Cook, Kelly Clarkson, Daughtry & Carrie Underwood. I hope they can find some more talent like that this year.
Thanks for doing these… they are very helpful for people that aren’t there and explain why some performances don’t neccesarily hit with the viewers at home and do with the judges.
I think Ellen is doing a great job. She is such a real person and gives her opinion realistically. I think the big contest will be between Crystal, Michael and Casey. Whomever wins…these three will go on to do great work…look at some of the past contestants that came in 2nd-3rd-even further back than that. I just bought Danny Gokeys album (great) and I have been Kelly Pickler all these years!!!
