It’s not uncommon for schools to pimp their famous alums, but Cornell Law School using The Office‘s Andy Bernard on their homepage still seems a little strange. I mean, Andy only went to undergrad at Cornell, right? Plus, doesn’t he act like a smug jerk about it? Don’t get me wrong: Ed Helms is fantastic, and Andy is the best. But he’s a total wiener about his alma mater.
Maybe I’m just jealous. The best fictional grads my college has are Harry and Sally from When Harry Met Sally. Just kidding! They’re awesome, and I am not jealous at all.
Bring it, PopWatchers: Does your school boast some top-notch fictional graduates?

Jeff Winger went to Columbia for college and he turned out fine.
Good call.
Jeff Winger went to college IN Columbia, not at Columbia. He is pretty awesome, though.
Thanks Captain Obvious. I think we all watch Community.
Bowdoin College has McDreamy from Grey’s Anatomy and Michael Caine’s character from the Cider House Rules
J.D. and Turk from Scrubs both went to my alma mater, WIlliam and Mary-along with Scrubs’ creator Bill Lawrence!
Cheers for a shared alma mater! Demi Moore’s super-savvy detective character in “Mr. Brooks” is also a fictional member of our Tribe, which is awesome
GO TRIBE!! I can’t believe I’d forgotten about JD and Turk at W&M – I was always so excited seeing the posters on the dorm walls, because seriously – how many people in the US have even heard of this small university(even though it’s consistently ranked as one of THE best public schools in the country – I’m talking single digit rank here)?! I could only think of Jon Stewart as far as alumni go, but obviously he’s not fictional. I love W&M – kicking ass since 1693!
Additionally it has given me the opportunity to understand some of the concerns of residents and business owners that live and work in or adjacent to the historic district.
There must be more, but right now I can only think of Gossip Girl characters (I went to Tisch at NYU). There are a lot of celebrities that have gone to Tisch.
Marc St. James from Ugly Betty is a fictional alumnus of my school, FIT. But we actually have an interesting list of REAL alumni… like Karen Allen (I know… really random.)
pretty sure many people in the cast of Mallrats went to my alma mater, Rutgers.
Shh…Lohan will sue you!
Despite its “elitist” ranking, I don’t think any fictional character has ever gone to Washington University in St. Louis because people are confused as to where it actually is.
Duh, west coast.
Ha! I have the same problem with my alma mater — Miami University, casually known as Miami of Ohio.
Is that where Rothlisberger learned his prowling skills?
OMG. I went there too! And no one knows where it is despite it being ranked 12th!
i went to the University of Arizona like Sandra Bullock’s character in Speed. “You tell that wildcat behind the wheel not to slow down…”
Dammitt Suzy! You beat me to it! I was so excited to post that. Her character’s name was Annie. (i think)
Joy Behar and Dr. Laura from Stony Brook University
Yeah, those two are pretty fake.
Smith College- Charlotte from SATC, Joanna Kramer from Kramer vs Kramer, Emily Gilmore from Gilmore Girls, and Cristina from Greys
Dartmouth College also has the tequila-swilling Meredith from Grey’s….very appropriate.
Elaine from Seinfeld went to Tufts
Andy Bernard was actually one of my “classmates”: He’s stated he was Cornell ’95, and so am I! And no, he only did undergrad and not law school, so I’m not sure why the law school is putting this on their page.
Ari Gold got his JD/MBA from my alma mater, the University of Michigan. We got Ally McBeal, too, and the cast of The Big Chill.
Marshall on How I Met Your Mother has a diploma from Ohio Wesleyan University, my alma mater, hanging on his office wall. And Marshall, Lily, and Ted all went to college together, so. There’s a lot of confusion over they actually went to Ohio Wesleyan or just plain Wesleyan, but I hereby claim them for OWU.
It’s just Wesleyan. The writers met there, actually. Oh, and that would be in my hometown!
