I think Widmore is going to see smokey. I was watching season 5, when Widmore goes to convince faraday to go to the island, he says “what if I told you the island could heal you?” This is the same way UnLock talks when convincing people to join him.
Remember when Widmore talked to Locke about a war coming to the island. He said that Locke had to be there. What side was he talking about? If he knew Locke was a candidate then hes on Jacobs side, and after the Lighthouse episode I seem to think Widmore is actually on team Jacob.
But maybe Widmore knew that Locke had to get back to the island to be taken over by FakeLocke.
I don’t know seems Ben just chose team Jacob and I don’t see him and Widmore on the same team. Also if he wanted team Jacob why didn’t he head toward the beach….where is he headed…my guess Hydra…
Agree – Widmore is Jacob’s man. I see Locke’s true character somehow saving the day in the end – “Don’t tell me what I can’t do.”
I lean towards the Widmore = Team Jacob too. He wanted to get everyone back to the island and it was Ben that killed Locke. Remember when Widmore was suprised when Locke said he was told he had to die? He said he wasn’t going to let that happen…
And Eloise appeared to be working w/him – and her words to Desmond – “The Island isn’t done w/you.”
Michael Emerson deserves another Emmy. I had tears welling up in my eyes when he said that he would go with Locke because he was the only one who would want him. Heartbreaking and acted so beautifully he plays sad and vulnerable better than anyone.
It is that vulnerability that makes it possible to feel for Ben despite all the horrible things he has done. He’s a flawed man, but he’s also a self-defeated man. Love him still.
Same here! I was actually tearing up and may have shed one or two watching Ben’s redemption arc. I can’t believe I was actually rooting for sideways Ben and I completely forgot that he was an evil murderer. Such a satisfying episode, left me happy and smiling. Kudos Emerson and amazing writers! (Also, I loved all the lil nods to the faithful Losties.. everything was just so perfect!)
I don’t think he has won an Emmy for LOST? Has he? I know Locke has.
Yes, he won last year.
Totally a great episode. I think that Ben was the first person to reject FLocke’s deal and join his side. Honestly never saw that coming! I have slowly become more and more a fan of Ben over the last 2 seasons. Now that the sides are set, I cant wait to see how it turns out.
During the final scene on the beach, I thought of the song “All by Myself” by Eric Carmen for Ben.
Seeing Ben standing there watching everyone greet each other on the beach reminded me of a lost puppy, standing in the rain, waiting for someone to help him. I felt so sad for him.
I want to hate him for all the bad stuff he did but I can’t..I feel sorry for him..
Note that Richard Alpert was standing alone as well on the left side. Someone else pointed out that Richard was wearing a black shirt, and Ben a light (not white) one.
I have to say that Matthew Fox is blowing me away with his performance this year. That scene with Richard was a amazing. I still have goosebumps.
re: the article this morning. wanted to point out that even though we didn’t see the golden compass- we did see its owner and he did give directions. sort of. i’m loving the potential for His Dark Materials here, especially as it is considered an alternative to Narnia, and seasons 4 and 5 had so much Narnia going on.

Also, does this mean that Michael has Jacob’s touch, too? Mr. Friendly said that he couldn’t kill himself if the island didn’t want him to…
I don’t think you literally have to be touched to be given Jacob’s “gift.” There’s no indication that Juliet’s sister was actually touched, and at this point I have no doubt that her cancer was cured.
I think you do have to be literally touched. They made such a point of showing Jacob touching the Losties in the season five finale. Surely he’s touched other characters; we just haven’t been shown those scenes.
I was actually thinking about Michael after the Jack/Richard scene. Remember on the freighter right before it blew up…who was it that came to him and said “Now you can go”…Christian Shephard. I still think he’s on Team Jacob.
That was an outstanding episode. Don’t worry — there will be plenty of action in the next two months, but this was a very compelling episode. Ben’s redemption was not only emotionally satisfying, but will probably play a very big part in the end game. And the Jack/Richard scene was crucial — Jack convinces Richard that Richard really is serving a purpose, and at the same time Jack proves the same thing to himself.
I won’t be surprised if Ben and Widmore butt heads on the island, as they did in the past. Maybe Ben will sacrifice his life to kill Widmore and help save the island.
VERY interesting reading of that scene. I took it to be Jack being self-indulgent (which I don’t like because I LOVE Jack). But it reeked of the pill scene with Dogen and I actually said not again. BUT I do wonder if he did this to try and convince Richard as much as to prove a point to himself. Huh. Hadn’t thought about that. I’m gonna go back and watch that scene. Because the first run through really bothered me, but you make a compelling case. Still want him to play nicer with Hurley.
hopefully richard and jack kissing in that scene is in the dvd extras
HAHAHA. wow, that would be… amazing!
I am not so sure we have the “teams” set. What about kate? All we saw was her walk out of the temple with the “Flocke” but based on the look that Locke gave her it did not seem that she was a “believer”.
I think it’s fairly safe to say that Smokey has a Trojan Horse in his camp on Hydra Island, and Sawyer, Jin and Kate will all turn out to be playing him.
That brings up a question — where’s Jin? He was with Claire and Smokey in the jungle, and then Claire and Smokey were at the temple, but I can’t recall seeing Jin.
I think we can assume that Jin is with Sawyer on Hydra Island. Last week, Claire asked Smokey why he didn’t send Jin or Sawyer into the temple, implying that he knew where both were and that they were following his instructions.
And that would leave Sayid all alone among the losties as team locke? That doesn’t make sense to me. For us to be invested, there have to be real, Oceanic vs. Oceanic stakes….
Claire is on Team Smokey, too…
Ben is just an amazing character. i was surprised that he rejected Flocke’s invite & chose the “good” side. let’s remember though that Ben is still Ben and he may end up switching sides before all is said and done.
And don’t forget Flocke is going to be mad at Ben turning on him. Although he did do Flocke a biggie by killing Jacob. And Jacob didn’t fight back because he was hoping Ben would change his mind at the end. The look on Ben’s face was Emmy worthy.
I think that since Ben made the similar choice in both worlds we have convincing evidence that his side is set. He’s made his choice and has gained his redemption.
What a great episode!! Jack and Ben were amazing
One thing I loved was the quick shot of the book “The Chosen” by Chiam Potok. One of my favorite books ever. I’m trying to figure out if thats just a random thing or a reference to the episode. (The book is about two Jewish boys in 1940′s New York named Danny and Reuven. Danny is Hasidic and Reuven is Orthodox. They start off as rivals but eventually become best friends and the book documents their friendship from boyhood to manhood. I’m not the best with Lost mythology, so if anyone sees a connection here anywhere please let me know.)
Absolutely the best episode of the season, and one of the best of the show so far. Michael Emerson is astounding. There was emotional catharsis, humor, revelations, pieces of the puzzle falling into place . . . everything you could possibly want from LOST. Absolutely stupendously amazing.
He lives another day! YESS!!!!!!
What got them to leave the island? Maybe he and Dad left with those who did so as a prelude to ‘The Incident’
This was the first one I’ve truly liked this season. Gave me the warm fuzzies, answered some questions, had some twists, and actually moved the story along. Michael Emerson’s acting rocked (he’s taken Ben from scary to wuvable), Jack was bad a–, we finally got some concrete answers about Richard, and Miles and Hurley were hilarious. “If you change your mind, I’ll be, like, a mile away.”
I’m sorry I can’t comment more than this. I think Ben’s choice to not ruin Danielle’s chance directly coincided with Island Ben’s asking and getting redemption. I also am glad we got the answer on why the islanders (Candidates) can’t die. I ALSO am looking forward now to the Richard Alpert Ep. Sorry to all those naysayers, but this season is bringing in the answers. Slowly..but surely. Oh wait, Widmore what?!
