Oscars: Clearly, the bar is the place to be

damon-tucciImage Credit: Rick Rowell/ABC (2)After reading the tweets EW reporters fed into our live blog last night, I now know where I will position myself if I’m ever allowed into the Oscars. (Also that I will bring plenty of cash in case a hot Aussie forgets his.) The highlights:

• “Stanley Tucci and Matt Damon went straight to the bar after losing. Bought each other a drink and toasted their loss.”

• “Damon and Tucci are back at the bar. When asked if they’re going back into the theater, they both say, ‘No!’ Damon adds, ‘We’re done.’”

• “Jeremy Renner is at the bar drinking water. ‘I’ll alternate it with scotch,’ he says. ‘It’s only 6 pm. I’ve got to pace myself.’”

• “After losing best original screenplay to Mark Boal, Tarantino and producer Lawrence Bender head to the bar for tequila shots.”

• “Tarantino and Bender just clinked glasses with Christoph Waltz, who is holding his Oscar in one hand and a glass of wine in the other.”

• “Clean up in aisle three: Woody Harrelson broke his wine glass at the bar. He started cleaning it up himself, until a bartender took over.”

• “Sam Worthington ordered a beer at the bar — then realized he didn’t have money to pay for it. Bartender gave it to him free.”

Wow, that would be so nice having a drink at the bar with these guys! There should be segments in between losers where they interview losers who end up at the bar! Tarantino should have won for original screenplay…

    • Matt

If would watch the bar-cam all night long. The show was funny last night, but I would watch the bar-cam for over half the show.

  • mishka

Did Georges Clooney hit the bar too? He looked pretty mad during the whole show. He should take it easy with his Nespresso.

    • Tomm

I believe he was joking around?

      • LL

Yeah, I think he was, but it came off strange. Just made him look like he was having a miserable time.

      • Q

I assumed he was, but i really didn’t get the joke.

    • Emma

I thought it was funny. I can’t believe it’s not open bar though.

  • Sam

    Cash bar? that is surprising.

    • Melissa

Agreed. Odd to have a cash bar at an event like that… do people really carry around their wallets and purses? (I’ve seen some of the women with tiny cute clutches – don’t look like they can hold much of anything besides lip gloss.)

      • Army Archerd

The real question is how many of those women were actually wearing panties under their gowns. I bet very few!

    • Q

I can’t believe I sprung for open bar at my wedding and the Oscars can’t even pony up for it. Lame!

  • BrandonK

Oh, Sam Worthington…what a scamp! I’m glad he was wearing his glasses at least part of the night.
Hm, do you think I’m too invested in the life of someone I don’t know? LOL

    • Strepsi

He is adorably fuzzy but don’t you think he looks shockingly petite? Between Ben Foster and Emile Hirsch I already have enough fuzzy pocket-sized hotties.

    • Stacie

Those glasses were adorable!!! I love him forever.

  • Tom

Walking the red carpet – I clearly got the strange sense that Morgan Freeman was buzzzzzed. His speech seems slurred…maybe it was the confusion of the ladies he showed up with. Was that his mistress(es?), car crash ‘lady friend,’ ‘step grand-daughter love interest?’ His whole recent personal mess seemed too awkward to acknowledge.

    • Sally in Chicago

About Morgan Freeman: A little gossip. His “daughter” is his step daughter, who’s about 27 y.o. and the Natl Inquirer claims that they are an “item”. The woman in between was the producers on Invictus and clearly a “firewall” between him and his “daughter” who were seated together in the auditorium, and the woman was gone.

The tabloids get it right 95% of the time. The story about Morgan and his daughter was running in the tabloids for a long time and then it disappeared. This was when his divorce was just about finalized. I also read that his ex-wife is getting half, about godzillion million dollars.

    • Laura in NJ

Yes……used to have a lot of respect for Morgan as an actor…..but not so now. His personal life ruins the talented actor’s career.

  • Myma

I can’t believe a fancy ‘do like the Oscars has a cash bar.

  • MDS

Learning that the Oscars isn’t an open bar is the most disapointing development of the night.

    • Sally in Chicago

It’s the economy stupid. And besides, it might have been a bar for charity reasons. The Oscars cost money and that org has a lot of charities connected to it. Besides, those actors can afford it.

  • Christine

It’s a CASH bar, how unclassy. Have to say though I would LOVE to sit at a bar with Damon and Tucci-those men would be great conversationalists!

    • Sally in Chicago

Why so? Those actors can afford it.

      • Josie

But it probably sucks for those people who are not actors or directors or producers.

What if you are a PA and you’ve got to cough up $15 for a budweiser. Not fun for them.

  • darclyte

Always good to sit at a bar in Hollywood if you want to meet someone famous.

  • Q

Love that Woody tried to clean up his own broken glass. Sam Malone would approve.

  • Ellen

The ceremony isn’t open to the public. The only way a PA would be there is as a guest of a nominee, presenter, or Academy member.

Only nominees & presenters are guaranteed tickets. After moving the ceremony to the smaller Kodak several years ago, even Academy members can’t get tickets every year: there’s a lottery for Academy members (not counting the nominees & presenters).

  • wooster182

How adorably normal is Woody Harrelson that he was going to clean up his own drink?

  • liz

has meryl streep ever won an oscar? i am confused, a little help please.

  • Meryl

Meryl Streep has been nominated 16 times, but has only won twice (for Sophie’s Choice & Kramer vs. Kramer).

    http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000658/awards

  • Daphalina

Yep, Meryl won for “Sophie’s Choice”.
