PopWatch’s love affair with Johnny Weir continued last night as he made an appearance on HLN’s Joy Behar Show. He reiterated his position that the two sports commentators who suggested he undergo a gender test during the Olympics should’ve thought before they spoke: Parents may repress their children if they think they’ll just be ridiculed for being themselves or (gasp!) turning out like him. “And I think me is pretty fabulous,” Weir said. Behar agreed, adding that she loved his “Snooki hair.” “It’s Marie Antoinette, not so Snooki,” Weir corrected her. Then he admitted he doesn’t actually know that much about Snooki, and I had a vision of us sharing a (faux) fur blanket and watching a Real Housewives of Atlanta marathon (his preferred reality show) while he occasionally got up to dust my apartment. But wait, there’s more…
Behar asked him to comment on the remarks that he was “too gay” for figure skating. His response: (sideways glance) “It’s figure skating.” Ha! He made the point that no man has ever been accused of being “too butch” for the sport, and often, the women are “more butch” than the men. “I mean, feathers, rhinestones, you know, velvet, glitter, it’s not exactly the image, especially for Americans, of a macho sport. But what I do, I challenge any football player, any hockey player, any soccer player, to do what I do for one day and not cry,” he said. Forget, Shaq vs. — that is a show I would watch! Behar then showed him a clip of Isaac Mizrahi on her show joking that Johnny was “a little too gay.” She said he was in good company if Elton John thinks Jesus is gay. “I suppose so… I think Jesus was a woman,” he quipped. Behar decided she wasn’t going to touch that one, and instead moved on to Weir’s fur controversy. He said he wasn’t going to lie and say he just wears faux fur now. “Just because someone feels one way, doesn’t mean I’m gonna change how I feel.”
Highlights not in the video above: Weir said he felt he deserved to medal in Vancouver after delivering a free skate that was the best he’s ever been: “But figure skating is a judged sport, a political sport. There was already one American assured a medal spot, and maybe they were saving room so that two Americans couldn’t be on the medal stand.” (Note: When superfan Kelly Ripa suggested he was robbed on Regis and Kelly Tuesday, he blamed the judges’ ages.) Also, he admitted he didn’t get any action in the Olympic Village. “There are usually rules in the Olympic Village: No smoking, no drinking, no drugs, and no fornication,” he said. “So I was very shocked that they were giving us condoms.”

It will be a sad day for figure skating when Johnny Weir retires from the sport. It’s sad that people talk so much about unimportant things and forget what a talented skater he really is.
Seconded! He’s a beautiful skater and a tremendous athlete, as of course they all are at that level. I’m not sure he was robbed of a medal – that bronze medalist was fantastic, too – but surely he should have been in 4th place, at least. I don’t even want to think about how boring men’s figure skating could be without someone like Johnny Weir around. Who cares if they land a quad, I want to see some kind of unique expression!
The fact that Evan Lysacek has been photographed so much in that medal has started to get on my nerves. Who wants to break it to him that he won’t be able to wear that on Dancing with the Stars without seriously injuring his partner?
Agree, I was just blown away by his performance. Not sure he was better than the Japanese skater, but certainly should have placed 4th at least. But the program he skated was memorable because he elevated his skating to a new level and showed what he was capable of. What a beautiful and inspirational performance.
He makes me smile. I hope more parents let their kids do what they like, gender roles me damned.
I’m a little bit in love with him. He is just so entertaining! I need to find episodes of his reality show online somewhere.
oh how I love him. He has such a great personality and such a talented skater. it is so sad that parents made their children ashamed of themselves because who they are. society has to stop defining gender roles, it’s hurting so many people.
hahaha. “Are you too gay for figure skating?”
“Um, its figure skating.”
I adore Johnny. I don’t agree that he was robbed of a medal because it is about difficulty and technique and a whole number of things but I could watch him skate all day long. I love how calm he is too, never getting riled up, just answering questions and being true to himself. Johnny is great.
i watched be good, johnny weir the other day- loved it! i want him to be my best friend lol
Johnny is a unique individual with a huge amount of talent. I hope to see him on ‘Dancing With the Stars’ one day!
Go Johnny go !
I oould not love him more. And behind all the sequins etc., figure skaters are incredible athletes and their training regimens are really grueling. Someone once did a study comparing figure skaters and hockey players as athletes, and the figure skaters crushed the hockey players in all the areas meaured( speed, endurance, flexibility, lung capacity etc.etc.)
I would love it if Johnny was on Shaq vs., season 2 – and I think the Big Fella would be game and respectful.
Johnny Weir is LOVE! He’s so cheeky and doesn’t give a flying toe pick. Keep up the good work!
I adore Johnny. I’m going to be very sad when he retires from skating, which hopefully will be a long time from now. He definitely should have finished higher than 6th at the Olympics. I’m not sure about medaling, but he should have been 4th at very least. He was spectacular!
I have a feeling that he’s going to be around for a good long time. He’ll be a big draw in any of the skating tours and I’m sure any skating special he’d do on tv would have great ratings. But when he does retire from skating completely–he’ll make a fantastic coach. He has a good balance of the technical and artistic in his own skating and from the clip I saw of his show (“I used to be a tall girl too”) he seems like he’d be super supportive. He’s just all sorts of fabulous.
The medal or lack of doesn’t matter. Johnny has used the opportunity of the Olympics to launch himself and what a what a spectacular job he is doing! In each of his post-Vancouver interviews he has nailed the landing. He’s bright, articulate and confident – he’s a keeper!
That’s what I say to my male friends who put down male figure skaters all the time. Those men are strong and could take on just about any athlete from our “mainstream” sports. He’s just an awesome guy!
I am so happy to see so many positive comments supporting Johnny Weir and his attitude. Sometimes I get so bummed reading these things because people say such hateful things. Not today! Oh, and I love Johnny Weir, too. The sport is more interesting with him in it!
Me too – I’m enjoying every EW post on JW because of the love that comes out in the comments. If you’re a fan of skating, you have to appreciate that he is fantastic both on and off the ice. For years he’s been criticized for being flamboyant and not backing it up with reliable skating performances. Now he’s proven he has the chops on ice to go with his personality off ice and I just couldn’t love him more.
