James Cameron’s Inside the Actors Studio premieres tonight (7 p.m. ET, Bravo). One clip you’ll see: Cameron talking about a mistake in Aliens that he didn’t notice until the premiere. Watch it below. Anyone catch it?
Another: Cameron explaining why Avatar is actually a chick flick.
P.S. It’s nice to see this show have a quality guest again. No offense, Kate Hudson.

I don’t know if you posted the wrong clip or not, but the mistake Cameron talks about is in “Aliens”, not “Avatar.”
A V A T A R – crazy box office. still going.
Domestic: $706,904,000 27.8%
+ Foreign: $1,839,000,000 72.2%
= Worldwide: $2,545,904,000
Indeed. Most successful film of all time outside of North America, both in Film Studio terms (Dollars rules) and, apparently in adjusted terms too. I still think the way the “adjusting” is done is too imprecise for me but it puts Avatar at No.1 internationaly and number 3 all time worldwide.
*thanks for the edit.
JC has done it again!
1st
Sorry tool, you’re 2nd.
Yet, he is still first among tools.
Yea for you!
could someone tell us (who can’t watch the video) what the mistake was?
yes, please?
Outside the US, we get a “We’resorrythisvideoisnotavailableinyurregionNyahNyahNyah” message, so could some kindly American help a Canadian hear another Canadian? We were so nice about letting you dominate our Olympics!
Hey, you won the gold in hockey and won the most gold medals of a host country in over 20 years! I’d say you did farely well in your own right…Congrats..
It is near the end of Aliens, when Newt is about to get sucked out of the stations. Bishop reaches to catch her, and half of the actors body can be seen coming out of a hole in the ground (Bishop had been cut in half at this point).
JC starts in talking about “Bishop” and “Newt” and I wondered if this story about “Aliens” was going to be related to an “Avatar” anecdote. Nope, just a goof. Still, good story. I’ll have to check for it next time I notice “Aliens” is on.
Now they’ve fixed the accompanying copy.
Oh, and the gaffe is when Newt is sliding across the floor and Bishop reaches out to grab her, Lance Heinriksen leans and exposes his lower body, that was supposed to have just been ripped off by the Queen Mother.
Ah, like the guy in The Golden Voyage of Sinbad who has a fake arm, created to look like the big wooden arm of the ship’s wooden figurehead. He had to grab one of the sailors but he reaches too far and you can see the foam at the end of the prop arm and the top of his real arm. Classic.
Can someone please tell those of us outside of America what he says?
Ta.
Yeah, the mistake was in Aliens. The only mistake in Avatar is the script.
OUCH!!!!!!!!!!THAT WAS KILLER!!!!!!
It was cool, shame it’s not truse Avatar is a fantatic story. Familiar plot, fresh story and like pure cinema much of it is told visualy. The writer’s guild didn’t nominate it for a laugh.
Wow, I really can’t type today. Sorry.
He who is full of himself cannot see the beauty in simplicity.
Hee hee… it’s funny because it’s true.
Except that it isn’t true, even remotely.
Can’t wait to watch this show! Don’t know why James Lipton gets so much hate, I think he does a good job…
Especially in the year of the beard…he should be revered as a visionary.
This is a very popular post in moviemistakes.com (which I found out about through EW!). Shows up as a daily goof photo quite regularly.
I was at the taping two weeks ago, it was amazing, cant wait to watch it again tonight
While I would agree that some of the characters and storyline dip a toe into ‘chick flick’ territory, the last 1/3 of the movie disqualifies it completely. ‘Chick Flicks’ generally have a much lower body count (usually 1).
Maybe James Cameron, what with all of the marriages and affairs he’s racked up doesn’t *quite* know what women want?
Oh, you know you’d be up there lapping from the fountain of Cameron if he gives you one of his come hither looks. You can’t resist the charm of Cameron.
Was the mistake in Aliens having Bill Paxton’s character be the most annoying person alive? I like Aliens, and I like Bill Paxton, but am I alone here?
Possibly, he’s a classic charater and Aliens is still a template for movies with “team” dynamics. Of course as everyone is different there’s bound to be more people like you who find him annoying in the “wrong” way. He’s meant to be annoying but I guess in a cool, interesting way; which is not how you see him.:)
I personally thought Bill Paxton’s character was hilarious.
I kind of go back and forth, but I guess I wouldn’t complain if they had toned it down a bit, oh well.
I disagree. I thought he was hilarious. And quotable too! Game over, man! Although, I would say an incredibly unrealistic character. You’d think the marines would go through some sort of psychological testing?
Sad to say he is an incredibly realistic character. There’s soldiers like him in most armies I should think, especially if you consider that he’s part of a hi-Tech military, where there are no real Aliens and the most he’s ever had to face are dumb animals or vastly inferior, in terms of weapons and training, humans. All my “soldier” buddies claim to have met many people like Hudson, although nowhere near as funny, they are almost always loud mouthed braggarts, like Hudson.
Maybe Cameron is onto something… maybe Avatar IS a chick flick and THAT’S why it blew chunks. On second thought, to call the craptacular Avatar a chick flick is an insult to chick flicks.
The phrase “Chick Flick” is an insult in itself, as is your statement that all Chick flicks must be rubbish. Still it’s an erroneous assumption held by many in Hollywood, even now so if that’s where you work, or intend to work then you’re on the right track.
On another note I’d like to know what it is about Avatar that you didn’t like. I’ve pretty much ask everyone I come across who doesn’t like it that question as it’s about as universal a film as has ever been made, hence the “simple” but easy to recognise Plot, disguising a much deeper and well crafted story.
Oh and I’ve written about the fact that Avatar does seem to be liked more by women than men; both in terms of more women having an emotional response and giving it a 9 or 10 or best film I’ve ever seen” type rating. Of course the overwhelming majority of men like the film too, just a few less 9 / 10s and a few more 8/9s. You’re not going to get around $2.7b (guessing likely final gross there) without being well liked AND good. We’re not talking Roland Emmerich “it’s cheesy garbage but we think its fun / a laugh” here. (2012, etc) We’re talking the highest grossing film of all time and the 3rd biggest of all time, at least. Let’s not forget it’s been well received critically as well. Of course none of that ever means anyone has to like a film, just that they may be a little over the top if they think its rubbish; in my humble, semi-journalistic opinion. Make that semi-semi-semi micro Journalistic.
I just popped in Aliens and saw the gaffe in question and I can’t believe I didn’t notice something like that before. I mean I’ve watched Aliens around 20 times and I never saw that mistake before. It’s really funny now that you know about it because its quite a big hole that Lance exposes when he reaches for the girl. It’s a wonder it wasn’t caught before the premeire.
As a note– with upwards of a 500 million dollar budget (between production and marketing costs), Avatar isn’t actually yet domestically successful as it hasn’t broken past the 2x mark in terms of revenue versus budget. That said, with 2.5 billion worldwide gross, this probably doesn’t mean diddly.
I found Cameron’s comments regarding how Avatar’s process is more natural for the actor than shooting on a stage, with sets and props and costumes, to be incredibly pretentious. Yes, James, your technical accomplishments are impressive, but you’re kidding yourself here.
