Ever buy a DVD before the season was even over?

16-and-pregnant-2You know you’ve got a television hit on your hands when two episodes in, the season is already available for pre-order on DVD. That’s what MTV’s doing with season 2 of 16 and Pregnant, the phenomenally popular show (the Feb. 16 season premiere drew in 3.4 million viewers) documenting the lives of several girls who are SPOILER ALERT 16 and pregnant. Every Tuesday we meet a new girl — like this week’s seemingly sweet Nikkole from Michigan, whose insignificant other I am convinced is a sociopath. He berated her during labor, ditched her at homecoming, and attempted to make her choose between him and her mother. Oh, yeah, plus he cheated on her. What a catch! And it looks like the season’s only going to get better – according to promos, next week we finally get to watch Valerie, who will yell into the phone at her boyfriend, “Just like, get it through your head – we had sex, A LOT!”

A lot of revenue could come from pushing the DVD early, so it’s not surprising that MTV is capitalizing on the show’s success. I have a feeling the top buyers are going to be parents and educators, since the show really is the best birth control this side of Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo. It’s on sale for $26.99, and Amazon guarantees that if the price decreases between your order time and the release date, you’ll get the lower price. PopWatchers, will you buy 16 and Pregnant knowing nothing else about the rest of season 2? Which seasons of which other series did you know you wanted on DVD before their TV runs were even over?

Jeff Probst blogs 'Survivor: Heroes vs Villains': Episode 3

survivor-probstImage Credit: Monty Brinton/CBSPREVIOUSLY ON… SURVIVOR

When last I left you…James appeared to be in the beginning stages of losing his mind. Last week’s tribal council ended with the very ugly and unnecessary comment from James to Stephenie: “Shut your mouth.”

Ah, so lovely.

Look, I’ve been a big fan of James from day one. I voted for him to be on Fans vs. Favorites and I voted for him to be on Heroes vs. Villains and up until this season I would have referred to him with affectionate phrases like “James the Gentle Giant.” Yeah… those days are gone. READ FULL STORY »

PopWatch flashback: When Annie met Apolo

This was my first on-camera interview ever, just after speed skater/soul patch spokesman Apolo Ohno had won season 4 of Dancing With the Stars in 2007. I clearly had no idea what I was doing (nice dress, loser), but it kind of worked on some weird sparkly level. If you can bear it, do hold out until the end, when we both got really excited about Peanut M&Ms. The Most Decorated Olympian of All Time is probably eating some right now to bulk up for tonight.

Congratulations, ballroom buddy!

Should Comic-Con move to Anaheim?

Tagged:

comic-conImage Credit: Mike Blake/Reuters/LandovAs someone who went to Comic-Con three years in a row until she realized all the cons had started to outweigh the pros, I had mixed feelings when I read that the pop culture extravaganza could be moving to Anaheim. Comic-Con’s contract with the San Diego Convention Center ends in 2012 and Anaheim is taking advantage of the growing dissatisfaction about overcrowding, parking problems, and expensive hotel rooms by putting in a bid to host the event. Those issues are certainly no small matters. Overcrowding makes for ridiculously long lines, which require you to queue up hours in advance for a panel. Between that and all the overlapping panels, I barely get to see even half the things I’m interested in. What’s the point of attending if I can’t even go to the things I want to go to?

Getting a hotel room is not much easier. Even with the Comic-Con discount, these rates burn a hole in your pocket. And that’s just the beginning. According to the San Diego Union Tribune, an internal survey “found that attendees spend $60 million on lodging, food and transportation during the four days.”

A lot of that money goes toward fueling the economy outside of the convention center, which is where my fixed feelings about Anaheim start. READ FULL STORY »

I’m working on it. I promise! In the meantime, Buzzfeed’s hilarious collection of Vancouver’s weirdest figure skating faces should tide you over. You can almost hear Scott Hamilton’s sexy/embarrassing grunts of pride/anguish. I just had no idea there were facial expressions for his signature sound! Check back later this morning for our PopWatch on Ice recap.

'American Idol' Top 24 results: Did the right people go home tonight?

Somewhere in Castle Abdul, Queen Paula is sipping from a giant Pepsi cup and patting her chihuahuas on the head. “We did it! We did it!” she cackles, as she rests her tired, speed-dialing hands in a vat of Epsom salts. Okay, maybe not. But sugar, American Idol appears to be going down, if the Paula-free first week of the show’s season 9 semifinals — particularly tonight’s baffling results show — is any indicator. [SPOILERS AHEAD, West coasters, so bow out now if you don't want to know who got booted.] READ FULL STORY »

'Survivor: Heroes vs Villains' instant react: As close to porn as a network TV show can get

Filed under: Reality TV and tagged: ,

It’s the oldest rule in entertainment: When in doubt, make half-naked people wrestle each other into a huge pit of mud. And so it went for Survivor‘s latest immunity competition, with testosterone and T&A taking center stage. Shockingly, no tops were ripped off, but there were those two gallons of mud poured down the deep canyon that is Danielle’s cleavage. Which tribe ended up victorious? Who was sent home? And why is Martin Luther King, Jr. turning in his grave? My full recap will be up at midnight (UPDATE: Click over now to read Dalton’s detailed Survivor recap), but for those who have already watched the episode, read on after the jump for more. Ladies' free skate: Kristi Yamaguchi talks focus

As we gear up for tonight’s telecast of the ladies’ figure skating long program, Kristi Yamaguchi, who won gold in 1992, offers insight into the mind of a skater on the Olympics’ biggest night. (Read the rest of Kristi’s interview here.) Who’s watching tonight? Are you ready to be dazzled? Get it? BE-DAZZLED? Come back for our PopWatch on Ice recap tomorrow morning.

EW: How do you focus? On the day of competition, you’re just kind of zoned out. You’re just trying to create a bubble around you and conserve your energy and just be as positive as you can. It’s such a mind game once you’re there. If you’re not prepared physically it’s one thing, but if you’re not prepared mentally, it’s gonna be really tough.

Do you just need to decide that it’s going to go well? Absolutely. So many negatives pop into your head. It’s just negative negative, oh my gosh, what if I do this, what if this happens, what if I get tired…You just have to purge all of that from your head and think back to your training and keep reassuring yourself.

Psych-up tunes? There was one song I would listen to on my Walkman — we didn’t have iPods back then! Right before I walked over to the arena to complete my long program, I listened to “There Will Never Be Another Tonight,” by Bryan Adams. So that was kind of my anthem song at the Olympics. It wasn’t like he was my favorite or anything, but that song… it worked to pump myself up. It’s so literal, I can’t top it. As far as current songs, the one that gets me going is the Black Eyed Peas. [sings] [EW: Oh my god Kristi Yamaguchi is singing into the phone right now] “Tonight’s gonna be a good night….” That probably would be my first go-to song.

What happens if you stumble? I think once you miss something, it can be a wakeup call for you to snap to it and focus and maybe try a little harder. That’s hopefully how you train and prepare for situations like that. But sometimes you’re just not feeling it, and you miss something and then you’re on pins and needles the whole time. You’re just hoping you don’t make another mistake.

Does morale change if skaters start falling? It depends on the individual skater, but you try not to worry about what everyone else is gonna do. You train yourself to perform a certain way. It’s kind of cliché, but it’s really true in figure skating. It’s tough when you see a tough night like that. You want to see everyone skate well, you want to see everyone fighting. It makes everything more exciting.

Clip du jour: A Burton-style 'Weekend at Bernie's'

What if Tim Burton directed a remake of Weekend at Bernie’s?

Bernie Lomax should be deaaaad! I think the music is what really makes this faux trailer special.

What incongruous film would you want Tim Burton to remake, PopWatchers? I nominate Dave.
