On the scene at Alexander McQueen's New York boutique

Alexander McQueen’s New York City boutique, usually an eye-catching storefront thanks to its bold patterns and colors, was attention-grabbing for different reasons today, hours after news of the designer’s death was revealed. Mourners have turned the store into a makeshift memorial, one that pays respect with flowers strewn in front of the now-covered main window. The staff of nearby Edris Salon left a bouquet of white roses and lavender, while another fan left a flower with a note for McQueen (left), which read: “You will be greatly missed. You thrilled us all with your couture vision.”

Indeed, McQueen was known for his envelope-pushing designs, but today, all that was visible from the storefront was the little that could be seen through the front door, which was kept accessible for those who were actually allowed in and out of the store.

The store was abuzz with staffers running around and turning to their phones and Blackberrys every few minutes, a rare appearance for most high-end stores, which are known for their sparsely populated — not to mention quiet — space. Part of the bustle may have been due to the cancellation of today’s scheduled McQ show for New York Fashion Week, but some of the other frenzy was caused by one bold-faced name in particular.

Longtime friend Naomi Capmbell, who’s currently in town for Fashion Week, was in the boutique, and though it was unclear what went on in the boutique, when she left the the store, Campbell made her way to an Escalade with two females in tow, one of whom was wearing McQueen’s famous skull-print scarf. And she wasn’t the only one. Many others came in and out of the store wearing McQueen’s signature accessory, possibly paying homage to a designer that ranked as one of the few lasting masters of couture. If McQueen’s popularity during his too-short life was any indication, his posthumous success will be unmatched.

'The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas' remake: Cast Mona and Ed Earl!

The Best Little Whorehouse is Texas is headed back to the big screen, Variety reports. Universal has tapped writers Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith to update the story, which originated on Broadway. The duo specializes in women’s tales: Their credits include The Ugly Truth, The House Bunny, She’s the Man, Ella Enchanted, Legally Blonde, and 10 Things I Hate About You. There will be musical numbers, but the studio hasn’t said if they’ll be familiar or original songs. Thoughts?

I’m okay with this. The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982) is one of the movies I watched on loop as a child, even though it was rated R, but if they screw it up, I’ll just pop in Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds and be fine. I do have two conditions:

1. Do not cast Jessica Simpson. In any role. She’s from Dallas, she sings, she’s “sexual napalm,” and I know you’ll be tempted. But she’s not an actress.

2. Keep it rated R. I’m not sure how the NCAA will respond today to the winners of a college football rivalry scoring at a brothel, but I’m gonna need some kind of a locker room production number. Nudity alert!

Who do you see starring in the remake? I wish I could imagine Faith Hill and Tim McGraw carrying a film, because how cute would that be? But I don’t see either of them having the personality to pull off the roles. Slezak suggested Carrie Underwood and Vince Vaughn for Miss Mona and Ed Earl, but Carrie feels too green. (I’d definitely hire her and her “Cowboy Casanova” video wardrobe to work at the Chicken Ranch.) Other pairings bandied about at PopWatch HQ include: Renée Zellweger and George Clooney or Sandra Bullock and George Clooney (though I think Clooney might be fun as the Governor of Texas, a role that earned Charles Durning an Oscar nod). You could also throw Reese Witherspoon and Matthew McConaughey into the mix. Or Anna Faris and Ryan Reynolds.

Your turn. Mix and match from our list or come up with your own picks.

Pauly D offers something new for the L in 'GTL'

JWoww already offered us halter tops, and now, just in time for fashion week, Pauly D is working with online store CafePress to create some fashions for his fans. It seems wearing Ed Hardy isn’t enough for any self-respecting Jersey Shore fan (is that phrase an oxymoron?)

Pauly D offers the ubiquitous “Mrs. Pauly D” slogan, “Your Girl’s Favorite DJ,” and – classy! — a T-shirt with lipstick print conveniently positioned over his crotch area. And speaking of crotch area, what Guidette doesn’t need a pair of Pauly panties? STDs not included.

How long before we’ll see The Situation’s line of gym shorts or Snooki-customized Bumpits?

Also, I have to ask if anyone else is shocked that these dudes do laundry EVERY DAY. Maybe it’s because I’m lazy, and own enough underwear, to do it about once every two weeks. Even if you put your gym clothes, your beach-day clothes, and your fist-pumping club wear all in the washer, that’s still not a full load. Is anyone else disturbed by people doing laundry every day?

What is (tonight's episode of) 'Burn Notice'?

It’s time, once again, to play the game show that has America asking that question! Burn Notice fans, did you chuckle at Saturday Night Live‘s “What Is Burn Notice?” sketch this past weekend? I thought its concept — total obliviousness to a pop culture entity a lot of people enjoy but you don’t really “get” — was funny and relatable. It reminded of my relationship with Channing Tatum, which is to say it reminded me that I could probably not pick Channing Tatum (O’Neal?) out of a lineup of five strapping men, even though he’s in that popular rom-com right now and lap-danced for Ellen right on our blog. If you’re a Burn Notice fan, did the sketch offend you or were you glad to see the series getting some attention?

After the jump, a list of Things we know about tonight’s Burn Notice just from watching the promo and a preview scene of “Enemies Closer.” READ FULL STORY »

'Killers' trailer: So this is what Ashton was tweeting about!

Categories: Movie Trailers, Movies

Remember waaaay back at the dawn of the Twitterverse (aka last April), when Ashton Kutcher was tweeting about the French Riviera, complete with scenic pics and a video about chest-waxing? (We kid you not.) Turns out they made a movie out of it! Well, actually, Kutcher was just tweeting from the set of Killers (slated for June 4), his new action-comedy with Katherine Heigl. But the trailer came out today (see below), and all we could think while watching it was, “So that’s what it was.”  The Côte d’Azur views, the Mediterranean architecture, the hairless chest — it’s all there in the trailer. Oh, and the movie has a plot, too. Kind of a True Lies-lite domestic spy thing. Check it out.

What do you think, PopWatchers? Will the movie kill or be killed at the box office this summer?

Amanda Seyfried heats up in 'Chloe'

She’s hot at the box-office in Dear John, but Amanda Seyfried is all other kinds of hot in forthcoming thriller Chloe. We’re talking nudity and girl-on-girl sexytimes with Julianne Moore (!). But it’s not some cheesy flick — Chloe is directed by Atom Egoyan, the auteur behind the great films Exotica and The Sweet Hereafter, among others. Seyfried’s titular character is hired by Julianne Moore to seduce her character’s husband (Liam Neeson) to see if he would be unfaithful.

Chloe will be out starting March 26, will you see it? Or if you prefer Seyfried in Dear John-esque good girl mode, she also stars in Letters to Juliet, out May 14.

'Toy Story 3' trailer: Let's play!

Toy Story 3 opens June 18, and the new trailer looks appropriately fantastic.

That’s Kristen Schaal as the voice of the triceratops, Ned Beatty as the pink bear Lotso, and Michael Keaton as Ken. Hee. The movie’s website also has profiles of new characters, like Peas in a Pod, who are so cute your ovary will explode.

One of the the things I love about the first two Toy Story movies — and Pixar movies generally — is that beyond the goofiness or fuzzy warmth, there’s a surprising vein of melancholy, an acknowledgment of the agony of having to grow up. The movies themselves aren’t tragedies by any stretch, but if you can watch Jessie’s flashback of “When She Loved Me” and not cry, you are made of stone.

I can’t wait, PopWatchers. Can you?

Remembering Alexander McQueen: What was your favorite creation?

Alexander McQueen, one of fashion’s most iconoclastic and relentlessly creative designers, was discovered dead today in his London home of an apparent suicide; he was reportedly distraught over the death of his mother, several days earlier.

McQueen, known as Lee to his friends and family, was born the son of a taxi driver in London’s East End, and rose to head one of the few remaining true couture houses, Givenchy, which he did for five tumultuous years. But he was always best known for the designs under his own name: Outrageous, elaborate, almost baroquely beautiful pieces that often felt more like art than clothing.

Unsurprisingly, his famous fans were similarly forward-thinking in their tastes: McQueen loyalists Sarah Jessica Parker, Cate Blanchett, Kate Moss, Rihanna, Madonna, and Lady Gaga often showcased many of his more outré creations, though he also created a well-received diffusion line for Target in 2009, and outfitted American sweethearts like Sandra Bullock (who accepted her 2010 SAG Award for Best Actress in his cobalt-beaded, ’40s inspired black column two weeks ago) and Julia Roberts (she recently stepped out in his sharp, structured shirtdress).

In an era of high-fashion designer as media star, McQueen often preferred to stay behind the scenes and focus on his work, from the meticulous Savile Row-trained tailoring of his trouser suits to the sublimely ridiculous ten-inch stilettos that looked like the claws of a particularly chic disco space crab. He was a true artist, and a rare talent, and he will be very much missed.

Readers, do you have a favorite McQueen look that you are remembering today? If you do, please leave it in the comments section below.

'Cougar Town' recap: Merry Valentine's Day to the sad girl in the silly sweater

On last night’s Cougar Town, Jules, the lady you kind of hate because she brags about not having spent a Valentine’s Day alone since she was 11, couldn’t handle being single for the Hallmark holiday even though she is SO. HAPPY. TO BE SINGLE! in general. If you peered really hard through a few layers of sarcasm and button-downs, you could tell that her paper buddy Grayson seemed pretty bummed out about being alone, too. So the way he Santa-pimped out Ellie’s house as a surprise to Jules — complete with wacky inflatable car sale guy! — was even sweeter. I think the genuine moment they shared — “Thanks for doing this.” “No problem.” — hints more strongly at a possible relationship than any to date. READ FULL STORY »
