Pick the music for your imagined figure skating debut

The figure skating portion of the Olympics came to an end last night, but I can’t stop thinking about the performances, particularly how snooze-worthy some of the music choices were. There were a few highlights. Kim Yu-Na’s short program to the James Bond theme was playful and sexy, while Americans Meryl Davis and Charlie White’s choice of an Indian medley during the ice dancing competition was delightful. But points off for using music from Phantom of the Opera, which needs to be retired from all competitions until the end of time. Ice dancing also provided the bizarre musical cue of Linkin Park’s “Crawling” from brother/sister duo Sinead Kerr and John Kerr. Ice dancing can get away with more unusual and popular song choices, whereas singles and pairs skaters can’t use music with vocals, but that doesn’t mean they have to put me to sleep.

If I were a singles figure skater, I’d skate to the String Quartet’s tribute to Muse’s “Time Is Running Out.” The song has a great sense of suspense with plenty of high and lows. Plus, there’s lots of pretty violins. I’d use one of Andrew Bird’s exquisite instrumental, whistling (does that count as vocals?) tracks for my short program.

PopWatchers, what music would you choose if you had to lace on some skates?

'Glee' and 'Mad Men' win costume-design awards: Amen

mad-men-gleeImage Credit: Glee: Carin Baer/FoxThe Costume Designers Guild held its annual awards ceremony last night. On the film side, The Young Victoria won for best period costumes, Crazy Heart won for best contemporary costumes, and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus won for best fantasy. On the TV front, Janie Bryant won Mad Men and Lou Eyrich won for Glee. Hell yes.

That Mad Men is stylish practically goes without saying; Glee is in a slightly different boat, and not just because so many of its characters wear uniforms. Sue’s iconic track suits; Rachel’s prim school-girl outfits; Mr. Schue’s blandsville, Ohio duds — all great. But it’s Jayma Mays’s Emma Pillsbury whose ensembles absolutely kill me with their perfection. The cardigans alone make me weak in the knees, plus the slightly quirky matchiness of everything and the immaculate accessorizing? Be still my heart.

TV-wise, the only show I can think of that can compete with these two is Ugly Betty, but I’d still give Glee the slight edge there. What do you think, PopWatchers?

'Idol' exit Q&A: Tyler Grady on mixed signals and that famous bathrobe

IDOL-Tyler-GradyTyler Grady was no Jim Morrison. If he was he would have stayed longer than the first week of top 12. Besides, he doesn’t want to hear the comparison anyway, as he told EW.

EW: Tyler, how are you doing today?
TYLER GRADY:
I’m very disappointed but at the same time I’m in high spirits because I realize all the potential this platform has given me. I know I had approximately 30 million viewers see me perform. That’s more than some performers can say. I already have a pretty strong fan base from the show and it’ll be relatively easy to bring them into the fan base of my band, Wailing Waters, because as a band we do the same sorts of things I did on the show. Similar vibe. I perform the same with my band as I did on the show. READ FULL STORY »

'Idol' exit Q&A: Ashley Rodriguez talks nerves, airtime, and why she agrees with Tyler

IDOL-Ashley-RodriguezAshley Rodriguez sang Leona Lewis’ “Happy” on Tuesday night, but the 22-year-old contestant certainly wasn’t thrilled with last night’s results. Though the judges gave the singer lukewarm reviews following her performance — and lukewarm is hardly bad when you consider the horrible critiques they unleashed on the rest of the girls — she still couldn’t manage to nab enough votes to stay in the competition. But so what if voters hurt her? Rodriguez still plans on trucking on. Here’s what she had to say to EW following her exit.

EW: You’ve had a night to soak it all in — how are you feeling?
ASHLEY RODRIGUEZ: You know, actually, I’m doing alright. It’s been a long night and it was an early morning, but I think now that everything’s processed a little bit, I’m doing okay.

Were you surprised about the results last night?
Absolutely. I’ll be very honest with you and say that I was surprised to have this journey cut short so quickly for me, considering that three out of the four judges told me that I’d be going on to the next week. So I was definitely surprised. READ FULL STORY »

Neil Patrick Harris to direct 'Rent': Awesome, or very awesome?

Neil Patrick Harris loves Rent. You could see it in the affectionate parody he did on Saturday Night Live last year (below) — and if you’re really up on the finer points of NPH’s résumé, you’ll know that he co-starred in a West Coast production of the rock musical back in the late ’90s (thanks, YouTube). Now comes word via The Hollywood Reporter that he’s going to direct Rent when it comes to L.A.’s venerable Hollywood Bowl in August.

How cool is that? NPH has never directed a musical before, so who knows what he has in store, but he clearly knows his way around a stage. I’m willing to bet that his production will be a smash success. (I’ll be honest: As far as I’m concerned, there is nothing this man cannot accomplish.) What do you say? Will you be seeing NPH’s Rent this summer? Speak up in the comments.

Simon vs. Ellen -- 'American Idol' Drama? Unbuttoned shirts!

Are Ellen and Simon not getting along on American Idol? Fox had no comment, Simon’s reps had no comment, 19 Entertainment had no comment, and on her nationally syndicated talk show, on which she’s given a global platform to be herself and share her experiences, Ellen had this to say:

It’s like Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, American Idol-style!

A little tension between the judges is usually good for a show — recall the glory days of ANTM — and Idol wouldn’t be itself without a little bit of bickering here and there. But if there’s a simmering hate-fest a-foot between these two, they are doing a good job of hiding it. Two sources close to the situation told EW that the rumors were nonsense.

Are you getting drawn into the Simon vs. Ellen gossip, PopWatchers?

Watch: Johnny Depp speaks out on behalf of convicted killers

In a detour from his round of promotional duties on Alice in Wonderland, Johnny Depp will appear tomorrow night on CBS’ investigative news show 48 Hours Mystery, speaking out in defense of the West Memphis Three, who as teenagers were found guilty of the 1993 murder of three 8-year-old boys in West Memphis, Arkansas. Since their case was chronicled in the acclaimed 1996 documentary Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills, Damien Echols, who is on death row, and Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley, who received life sentences, have drawn support from a variety of pop culture figures, including Eddie Vedder, the Dixie Chicks, Henry Rollins, Tom Waits, and Winona Ryder, who argue that they were wrongly convicted of the brutal killings largely because, in their conservative community, their goth looks and taste for heavy-metal music stoked irrational fears of satan-worshipping teens and made them easy fall guys. In the preview clip below, Depp speaks about what he sees as a terrible miscarriage of justice: “There’s not a shred of evidence. I think the most courageous action that the state could now take would be to admit that they were wrong, admit they made mistakes, and correct these errors.”

What do you think? Have you followed the case of the West Memphis Three? Do you think Depp’s appearance on 48 Hours will help their cause, or will it be dismissed as just the latest of instance of a celebrity on a crusade?

Does the world need Snooki re-enacting 'Precious'?

jersey-shore-hurt-lockerImage Credit: Lopez TonightIt can only a matter of time until J-Woww and Snooki try to give Dame Helen Mirren a Bump It hair makeover on the Oscars red carpet. Before that happens, George Lopez has recruited these tanned and toned not-quite-cineastes to re-enact scenes from several Oscar nominated movies. The skits will air on Lopez Tonight from Monday, March 1-Thursday, March 4. Movies they’ll pay “tribute” to are Avatar, The Hurt Locker (pictured), Up In The Air, Precious, Inglorious Bastards, and The Blind Side. I can see their orange glows easily going blue for an Avatar spoof, but REALLY I don’t think anyone needs to see the Jersey Shore braintrust trying to make light of a devastating, inspiring movie like Precious.

Which skit are you most dreading?

Colbert kicks Canada when it's down, and those Canadian Iceholes love it

In an unprecedented act of sportsmanship, Stephen Colbert took Canadian Iceholes off the on-notice board, where they had previously been sandwiched between Jane Fonda and limey squirrel eaters. And it may have been the Ziploc bag of cheap prescription drugs talking, but the Canadian spirit seemed to have won over our single-minded patriot. “Canada, I’ve changed my mind. You’re all Saskatcha-winners.” Yes, the host country’s “Own the Podium” campaign may have faltered, but Colbert was kind enough to share a “Cheer Up Canada” montage. Moose, maple syrup, cartoon mounties, Alex Trebek. Awwww. The assistant sports psychologist also gave us unprecedented access to the U.S. speed skating team’s locker room and interviewed snowboarder Seth Wescott, an esteemed PopWatch Olympic Stud of the Day. Last night’s Colbert Report is embedded below.

Sadly, it’s time to hang up that Ralph Lauren cardigan and bid adieu to the international broadcast chalet. READ FULL STORY »

American Idol Exit Q&A: Janell Wheeler on playing it safe and... country breakdancing?

IDOL-Janell-WheelerLook for our interviews with all four eliminated American Idol contestants this afternoon on PopWatch.

EW: How are you doing, Janell?
JANELL WHEELER: I am doing really good, actually. [Laughs] I’m doing better than most people would expect. Everyone’s saying, “You’re really chipper today.” Yeah, that’s me.

Do you think it’s because the pressure’s off?
Yeah, I do. I love being in front of the camera and being interviewed. I love all this kind of stuff, even when we did our Top 24 photo shoot and press day. Everything about this role makes me happy; I love all this. I love communicating with the press and staying in touch with the fans and stuff like that. So I’m doing pretty well, and I’m really excited to move forward.

On the show, it came across like you were pretty down on yourself. Was that really the case?
Yeah, they definitely showed the same clip of me saying, “I couldn’t take the pressure” about four times in one episode. [Laughs] There was only one hiccup for me on Hollywood Week, and that was my final performance. I was kind of confused watching back the tape; during group night, they said I was a standout performance on one episode, and then in my top 24 [video package], they made it look like I didn’t do a good job. So in reality, I thought I aced Hollywood week except for one performance. Of course, I had one meltdown during Hollywood Week, and then they replayed it a couple times. But, you know, everyone was shown crying during Hollywood Week, so I’m not even worried about that. And I’m a girl, [chuckles] so it’s okay. READ FULL STORY »
