EW: So you sound pretty blue. Has it been a rough night?
Joe Munoz: Well, it was pretty tough but I guess that’s just part of the whole experience. I’m feeling better now.
You actually performed Jason Mraz’s “You and I Both” to pretty good reviews from the judges. So did you feel confident going into last night’s show?
I was a little nervous because the show is so unpredictable. You don’t really know what’s going to happen. I was preparing myself for whatever would happen.
The judges seemed to be especially harsh this week. Did you talk about that with the other contestants or your roommate?
I was rooming with Jermaine [Sellers]. And, yeah, they were pretty harsh on some people but I think I got good comments. We were just pretty excited to be able to be there and to have the opportunity.
I believe Randy criticized your song choice. Why did you choose “You and I Both”?
I just love that song. I really look up to Jason Mraz. I look up to him as a singer and as a performer. I love the story and I thought it would be a beautiful story to tell.
The other judges had decent things to say. Did that make you feel safe?
They build up your confidence a little bit but it’s not up to them. It’s up to the public. You can never feel totally secure about yourself because it’s up to the votes. America is so unpredictable.
So, what now for you?
I know this sounds so cliché, but I’m going to keep on trying. It’s going to happen. I feel really confident that something good is coming my way. American Idol is such an enormous platform. I never in my life dreamed I would get so much exposure.
Will you be watching the rest of the season or will it be too painful?
No, of course I’ll watch. All my friends are there. I need to support them. I’m going to vote for everyone.

Wasn’t Randy wearing that exact same awful sweater last night?
I was so disappointed Joe Munoz got eliminated. He can sing better compare to other male contestants. Oooh wellll….come back next year Joe don’t give up.
It’s Joe, BTW
maybe jose is his real name, but he likes to be called joe. some people probably have used nicknames on the show or their middle name, or just their first name.
THERI!
LOL I didn’t even notice the mistake. It is Joe, but I can’t stop myself from thinking of him as “Jose Munoz” because his name reminds me of previous contestant Jorge Nunez and I have a hard time not adding a second syllable onto “Joe”, and Jose is so close in spelling to Joe. Anyways, it was not fair that he was eliminated, but I never vote for AI so I guess I can’t complain too much. Sorry Joe, you were definitely better than a lot of the other guys.
“America is so unpredictable.” Not really. They vote for the so-called cute guys. This show stopped being about singing years ago.
At the end of his performance he added a shout out to Mexicans and latinos in general, and he spoke in spanish. I think backlash did him in. It is not so good for an AMERICAN idol contestant to speak spanish, especially in the first round, before he is more known to viewers. And just to be clear, I am just expressing an opinion. And yes, hablo espanol.
that’s what i thought too… as soon as he spoke, i thought, oh no, he just alienated himself… too bad. note how allison didnt speak spanish nor did she mention her heritage until much later into the competition.
“alien”ated…haha
cause he spoke spanish? really? and if that is the case its sad …what good is it that theres a black president..and?? its still the same racist a pregedous country…sad to be an american!
It’s a shame if that’s true and the Spanish turned viewers off. I LOVE hearing people speak foreign languages, especially when I don’t know them because I like just listening to the sounds, and Spanish just rolls out like a snare drum. I thought it was great when he threw in the quick shout-out, even if I didn’t understand it. I think he was done in by the show not giving him any face time beforehand and the fact that he didn’t earn a sympathy vote because he didn’t suck.
He was good but not memorable as Simon said. I don’t think the Spanish speaking did him in although asking his family in Mexico to vote for him may have rubbed people the wrong way.
he never asked his family in Mexico to vote, besides you cant even vote from mexico, he was asked if he wanted to say anything he just sais hi ti his family….never asked for votes…is saying hi to your family that wrong…come on people!
Let’s just put it where it is — much of America is still racist, but more importantly, unlike the whites and blacks, the Mexicans and Hispanics are NOT watching and NOT voting. First Jorge Nunez last year, and now Joe. Oh, well. Of the 4 people eliminated, Joe has the most posts here. That has to tell you something.
Oh my gosh, you can’t be serious! It’s 2010 – we have our first African-Am president. Please let it not be so that his speaking in Spanish was a negative! Having said that, there are thousands of Hispanic-Americans who should have supported him! He’s good – or at least better than most – and blogs all over America seem to agree – he deserved to stay!
I voted for Jose. He was one of the better male singers this season. I am sorry some people decided to vote for “adorable” and not “talented”.
Don’t give up Joe! You’re a great performer and singer, I was really looking forward to seeing you grow on the show. America was wrong!
joe deserves more than that. He was better than many others.
I liked Joe, I was disappointed to see him go. I think he needs to work on his speaking style and stage presence though. I wasn’t expecting to be impressed with him, he just came across like a kid in the video. But he turned on the charm when he sang, and I liked his warmth. He reminded me of David A. in the charm department. But I agree, I think his Español shout out sounded like he was trolling for the Latino votes, and that might not have been the best thing to do on the first night, before he had fans. I was looking forward to him growing and improving, I think he has promise.
poor Joe. he had at least a couple of good weeks left in him… why oh why wasn’t his roommate sent home?
you know his last name is munoz and not nunez, right, ew? on the main page, the article says “joe nunez.” but i guess all latinos’ last names sound the same, don’t they? unbelievable. and so are some of these comments – seriously? speaking spanish in this country is a turn off? where do you people live?! and has anyone *really* done a study on the demographics of the people who vote for AI? if there is one, i’d like to read it. otherwise, let’s keep ethnic backgrounds out of it.
I thought that Joe was a good singer and had a sparkle when he performed. I hope that a lot of good things happen for him. I think he is a talented guy.
I think of the four to go out last night, his was the worst exit. He was one of the best guys, and never should have been sent home. It just goes to show that without exposure before the finals you really are fighting a losing battle.
Janell also shouldnt have left so early, though she didnt have a great night. Ditto Tyler.
It’s a shame Joe got voted out he was decent. Either Urban and (non-adam)Lambert needs to be one of the two next week. Both of them were awful.
Joe performed well Wednesday night and even better in his sing-off. I actually voted for him several times since I knew he might be in danger, a victim of near-nonexistent screentime. Poor guy, he definitely deserved to stay at least a couple more weeks.
I could not believe Joe was voted off – nice personality, very good voice — especially when compared to most of the rest of the male field this year, and really a pretty good performance throughout the journey on idol this year, including Wednesday night. I hope he keeps on with his dream.
He didn’t deserve to go this week.
