Olympic Studs of the Day: the Ryans of U.S. men's hockey

It’s Super Sunday for hockey fans, with three big-deal games on the schedule for today’s festivities: Czech Republic vs. Russia, Canada vs. U.S., and Finland vs. Sweden. Yes, sports fans, those are also the gold-medal match-ups from the previous three Olympics. Grab your mouthguards! Today, PopWatch is saluting the Ryans of the U.S. men’s hockey team: Ryan Miller, Ryan Suter, Ryan Whitney, Ryan Callahan, Ryan Kesler (lower left), Ryan Malone (top left), and Bobby Ryan.

Suter, 25, comes from a hockey folk: His dad Bob Suter was part of the 1980 Miracle team, and his uncle Gary Suter was on the 2002 silver-medal team. It’s already been an exciting Olympics for Bobby Ryan, who chipped some of his teeth last week when he took a stick to the face. (“Things got a little chippy,” he said. Gaaah.) He and Whitney (who is blogging some of his experiences) will be facing off against fellow Anaheim Ducks Scott Niedermayer, Corey Perry, and Ryan Getzlaf, who play on Team Canada. Goalie Ryan Miller had to tape over his “Miller Time” nickname on his helmet, which still includes a tattooed Uncle Sam opening a can of whoopass.

All that and we’re still not even at the quarter finals? Be still my heart, PopWatchers. Who are your studs of the day — hockey or otherwise?

    Jerome Iginla!
    Go team Canada!

    • ks

Our house it is Canada all the way-hope the USA gives them a run and makes it a good game.

      • Daniel

All I can say is U.S.A. All the way.

    • NBCsucks

Too bad NBC didn’t air the USAvsCanada game.
      NBC= No Brain Cells

      • Daniel

I agree, this was a real slap in the face.. But then again, what would you expect, from NBC.. :-(

  • ks

We’re going to be watching this game!!

  • ks

Just wanted to do a shout out to the mens curling team G B, and the Jamacian skier-held first place for about 3 seconds!

  • Otis

Too bad the morons at NBC decided NOT to broadcast the USA/Canada on NBC instead relegated the match-up to the relatively obscure MSNBC which is only available in a fraction of homes in the USA … those with cable. And to add insult to injury, my cable company, Comcast, requires purchase of their digital package at a premium to get MSNBC.

    • Casey

OMG you mean it isn’t on? I’m so p!ssed right now! Why would they do that?

I don’t get that channel, is there somewhere else I can watch it?

    • DaniVt

I know- it is so ridiculous! Most of the Hockey games have been on MSNBC…

    • Tarc

Why? You can watch the same players of the NFL all weekend and sometimes on weeknights from September thtough April already. It’s pretty titchy if pro hockey players should be in the Olympics at all for many people.

  • mary

The men’s canadian curling game is on, those boys are pretty cute!

    • Big Dave

Especially John Morris. Now I just have to figure a way to meet him, turn him gay, and convince him to marry a fat man old enough to be his father.

  • Megan

On any other day Sidney Crosby would be my stud but today the Ryans are my studs. Go USA!

  • Jenny

The Norwegian men’s curling team -just for staying committed to the pants.

    • ks

      LOL I know.

    • Big Dave

Yeah, you’ve gotta admire that commitment! On the other hand, once you’ve worn them once, there’s really no longer any point in trying not to look ridiculous.

  • Snarf

    Sidney Crosby. Yum.

    • sara

      I second that…he’s delicious

  • Sarah

Those Ryans are definitely eye candy!

  • Ellie

Simon Ammann, for being the most decorated Swiss athlete EVER. And having über cool shades.

Mark Tuitert, for bringing the Crown Prince of the Nederlands to BC to party at Holland House. Hardcore.

  • Joslyn

Ryan Miller was AMAZE in that game – definitely lived up to Stud of the Day status!

  • otis

Best hockey game I’ve seen since the Miracle on Ice at Lake Placid Olympics and most of America could NOT see it due to the ultimate stupidity by NBC… who I’m told showed a skiing repeat instead of this classic. And to show how foolish NBC was… they own the broadcast rights to the NHL Saturday game of the week starting after the Olympics and blew the greatest promotion hockey they could have. USA!! USA!!

  • Melody

Ryan Miller is the hottest! He’s on fire in net and seems like a decent guy off the ice. Funny, too.

  • Cambria Knutson

NBC is absolutely horrible with their coverage of the Olympics this year. USA-Canada on MSNBC?!?! Are you kidding me? NBC owns the rights to the game of the week for the NHL, and they can’t manage to put on of the highlight games on their main network for primetime?!?! And what a game it was too, eh? NBC deserves to have the Olympics taken from them. ESPN would do a much better job and cover more than just the American athletes. I live in a house full of Canadians and they brag to me all the time about how much better the Canadian coverage of the Olympics are. And I don’t doubt them for a second.

    • Big Dave

You have no idea how much better Canadian coverage is. I’m an expatriate American living in Canada, and Canadian coverage is so much better I’m embarrassed for the USA.

  • Briana

Usually, I’d say Sidney Crosby. But, Ryan Miller and Zach Parise are FINE! How about the entire USA Hockey team? After all, we’re going for the gold finally!

    • Melody

      Zach Parise is hot, too!
