People crash while skiing, and while it is difficult to watch, its part of the sport. did you see Shawn White hit his face on the edge of the half pipe a couple of weeks ago? I’m enjoying the Olympics, but I feel for those athletes who get injured (or worse).
I thought the guy who came up and just kind of poked one of the skiers with a shovel was a really classy touch.
Lol, I know, right? Or the man who collected the skiis that fell off one of the women but didn’t even bother to help her up.
Yes! I also loved that the commentator was so pleased that some of them were able to walk on their own after crashing, like they had risen from the dead
That kind of bugged me too. I mean, it’s nice to see they’re okay(ish), but maybe they shouldn’t actually be putting weight on those joints right now? Just a thought?
I howled at that too. I asked my husband if the shovel man was part of a road kill crew!
I know with downhill skiing at those speeds, you can expect crashes, but those wipeouts were pretty painful to watch.
Though slush has been great for the mogul skiers…
Plenty of women in the downhill held their jumps fine- people get eager and aggressive in competition that’s why they’re falling- slopes have bumps, that’s skiing.
Do they get practice runs down the actual course or did the first girl have to go down not knowing that the bump was there?
Apparently they got one run each first.
Did anyone see the clip they showed of Lindsey Vonn’s reaction? Horror and shock as she mouthed ‘Oh, my God’ over and over. Then she and Julia Mancuso covered their eyes and turned away.
I don’t want to see athletes injured. That’s never fun to watch (worse to experience first-hand, let me tell ya). However…
These are the Olympics. The athletes SHOULD be challenged to be…well, Olympian. If their purpose is simply to compete, they can dial back their performance to keep themselves safe. That’s Olympian, too–to have the courage, and sense, not to overreach your capabilities. For the best, however, they need more. They should have more.
The women’s downhill course was the truest test I’ve seen in an Olympics in a long time. It didn’t coddle the athletes, nor was it so redonkulous that the athletes themselves complained about the danger.
What are the top athletes complaining about? Being treated like children. The women’s lugers are most assuredly not happy about their lowered start. Many of the men’s lugers weren’t happy with their situation, either. Did VANOC screw up by not safeguarding those pylons? In retrospect, yes. Did the IOC screw up by overreacting to a tragedy? The answer to that, I think, is also yes. Let’s let Olympians be Olympian.
Dear Annie,
Thanks again for mentioning Arrested Development as much as possible.
Love,
