Olympic Stud of the Day: Evan Lysacek

Evan-Lysacek Day 5′s Olympic Stud: American Evan Lysacek, who stands at second place following the men’s short program last night. Lysacek may have had the best (and most dehydrating) post-skating reaction of the night, when he cried an almost alarming amount of happy tears after finishing his routine. Don’t scoff. It takes a real man to cry in front of millions of people. I should also note that you should not base his stud status purely off what you saw last night. Google him and see him with his hair brushed forward — you’ll see. Lysacek finished just off the podium in the 2006 Torino Olympics, so I’m rooting for him until the end. For more on the men’s skating short program, check out our recap.

Honorable mentions: Maëlle Ricker, the Canadian who took home the country’s second gold last night in snowboard cross seemingly without effort. It was a loss for America (Lindsey Jacobellis disqualified herself early in the semi-finals), but a win for viewers who quickly switched alliances after seeing Jacobellis’ flub (you know who you are…). Also, for being the first Canadian woman to take an at-home gold, she maintained a humble attitude after her win, greeting the crowd and even shooting the camera some moose ears. Modesty is always worthy of stud-ette status.

Deserves a mention: Patrick Chan, whose heart-warming story about the loss of his longtime coach Osborne Colson had me (and the other females I was watching the Olympics with) rooting for him. Also worth mentioning, if only for his studly smile and chiseled jaw, is Switzerland’s Stéphane Lambiel.

Noteworthy Michael Scott-esque conversation at my Olympics viewing party: Me: “I’m not sure if Lambiel’s a stud. I mean, look at his poufy hair.” Guest: “It wasn’t that big when he started (his routine).” Roommate: “That’s what she said.”

Finally! A stud of the day I can totally agree with! (Although if you’d chosen Stephane Lambiel instead, I could’ve gotten behind that choice too.)

    • orville

Maybe we can make Lysacek and Lambiel co-studs of the day? I couldn’t begin to choose! Both very swoon-worthy.

      • Mary Q. Contrary

Yeah, I agree they’re both hot, but I think Lysacek edges him out in the end. YUM. Especially without the oil.

    • chris

lambiel, anytime. and what’s up with lysacek’s greasy hair?

      • Flyer

I’ll take Lysacek over Lambiel, but I wish Evan would STOP with the hair product. He’s really cute without all the grease!

  • J.B.

No love for Daisuke Takahashi from Japan? I thought he was amazing!

    • ks

He is just cutie!! I nominate him :)

    • steph

I agree! He was on fire!

    • Claudia

He was FANTASTIC, but Pleshenko was my fav

  • MWC

Can we really call a male figure skater a “stud?”

    • ktct

Check out his girlfriend, Tanith Belbin (sp?). He’s a stud.

      • step

        They broke up.

      • Ambient Lite

        Yesssss!

      • orville

I didn’t even know they were dating in the first place! What’s with the rumors of a feud between Belbin and Johnny Weir? I was half watching when one of the commentators mentioned some sort of feud going on in the Olympic village between them.

      • Linda L

Wait. Tanith Belbin? The ice dancer? Really? Did not know they were even dating.

      • orville

Wait–maybe the commentator said they were “rooming together” instead of feuding? That’s what I get for trying to watch while doing the dishes.

      • brody

Orville, you were right the second time. Johnny Weir and Tanith Belbin are Olympic Village roommates.

      • Jan

I hate to say it, but I always thought Belbin was just a trophy girlfriend to help his boring public image. There never seemed to be any chemistry between them when they were together (the one time they skated together in one of those NBC ice shows, they sure weren’t into it). Sometimes I think she was his beard.

      • Maggie

he’s now dating nastia liukin, the american gymnast who won the all-around gold medal in beijing. talk about a power couple!

    • ingoditrust33

Most definitely I can call a male skater a stud!! Studly for sure! Evan Lysacek WOW! What do you look like, and can you skate like him? Don’t judge him by his profession or his costumes. Yes, costumes, not what he wears everyday. Duh.

      • MWC

If deciding what “costume” you are going to wear to prance around on ice skates is major part of your everyday routine, you are not a stud.

      • brody

MWC, when you can do those jumps and spins — or hold a 100-pould girl over your head with one hand while skating — THEN you can judge.

      • brody

*I meant “pound,” obviously. I have no idea what a pould is. :-)

      • Kim

MWC…when you go out there and land quadruple jumps and throw 100 lbs over your head while moving on ice…then you can talk. It takes a great deal of talent, skill and gracefulness. If you can’t do it, don’t knock it.

      • Tyler

OK, I’m not even straight, but I don’t care for Evan’s costume either. But there are studs in figure skating. Kurt Browning will always be THE stud of men’s figure skating–he is still the coolest ever. Dick Button with two gold medals would be THE other stud…if only he had a different name.

    • Ed

Of course he’s a stud. He’s the Don Draper of figure skating.

  • bets

Patrick Chan? Nah. There’s something off about that dude.

    • Claudia

I thought so too!! was it the twitchy eye???

  • Ambient Lite

He is SO delicious. I had to wipe the drool from my chin watching the ‘Evan Lysachek working out montage’ last night. Oh and his joy after his performance was adorable. Love him.

    • Lorie

Dammit, I missed his work-out montage last night! I instantly became a new fan last night. Evan is hunkalicious!!

      • Ambient Lite

Lorie, I feel so strongly about sharing that particular clip that I went hunting for it, hoping to share a link – but no luck. I hope you get to see it someday! He is amaaaazing! :)

  • step

What about Florent Amodio?! That kid was amazing, I can’t wait to see him in Sochi, if last night is any indication of where he’s going.

    • seattle_girl

Very drool worthy indeed, but not quite up to OSOTD achievement.

  • Jessica

You must be joking. He had the world’s most boring routine (to match his outfit!) Who cares if he is marginally technically better – he’s no fun to watch. Add to that the amount of bronzer he’s using and what an ass he is in interviews and I’m sure we could pick a more worthy stud.

    • Angie

You’re comment would be more positive if you actually noted if anyone was fun to watch. Personally, I don’t care for Plushenko’s choreography. Enjoyed Evan’s and Daisuke’s footwork so much better.

    • amanda

jessica u rock, that pretty much sums up how i feel about him , i thought riker should’ve made stud 2day,that was an awesome race.

      • Tara

I agree too. Evan is a great athlete but he’s unoriginal. I loved his Carmen program in 2006, but I just haven’t seen any growth since then. He keeps using musical pieces that have been more successfully used by others (Kulik, Kwan, Curry, Witt, etc) and there’s no passion in his skating (compared to Lambiel, Chan, and Abbott). Plus, his personality is non existant. I understand that being an Olympic athlete is life consuming, but he needs to take an attitude lesson from Olympic snowboarders (like Shawn White) who know how to work hard AND have some fun doing it. Evan is basically like one of those American Idol contestants with mad vocal skills, but no personality or originality.

    • Danielle

Jessica…sorry..did you even watch his performance? Boring? Blech. He is hot and his performance was amazing!!! I couldn’t agree with Evan Lysacek as the “stud of the day”. Of course I have been slightly obsessed with him for most of the day (“googling” him and “ogling” over pictures).

      • SLB

Not exciting, NOT hot. Go Johnny Weir!!!!!

    • Hannah

I’m cheering for a Plushenko win (I know, I can hear the sighs now, but I just can’t get enough of him), but I would not call Evan’s performance boring by any means. Also, you cannot deny his stud-ness. I’ve got a thing for tall guys dressed all in black. Mmhmm!

      • Claudia

        HOORAY ME TOO
        GO Pleshenko!

  • wtfnyc

Johnny Weir FTW!!! Anybody who can be THAT out there and flamboyant, then back it the heck up with technically perfect, amazing skating, so all the haters pretty much HAVE to STFU? Is, in my book, a Stud. (Agreed on Stephane Lambiel, too, if only for those friggin’ amazing spins. WOW!)

    • Tara

Johnny’s a good skater, but he’s just too slow. Watch his program again and you’ll notice he doesn’t have the speed across the ice that the other top skaters do. Plus the spins are slow. Lambiel’s skating is absolutely beautiful–no argument there. Even with the mistake on the quad (and lack of triple axel) he’s was the stud of the night for me. I could watch that program over and over again. Same with Jeremy Abbott. Even with the singled and doubled jumps, the program was just fantastic. Patrick Chan’s (or P_Chiddy on Twitter) program also had a lot of high quality skating, even with the missed axel and footwork stumble. That was another keeper for the DVR.

  • Delia

Evan is my Olympic boyfriend (don’t tell Apolo), so I’m on board with this. Stephane Lambiel was a nice surprise, though, and props to Johnny Weir for backing up the talk with some action!

  • nykolus

his ‘studliness’ waned a bit when he was crying into his feathered cuffs. but that’s just me…

    • brody

Now, that’s a good point. Big, tough Evan (and he’s known for being tough and althletic, rather than flamboyant) crying into his feather nest was a bizarre image.

      • Claudia

        your comment was HILARIOUS
        crying in a bird nest
        omg

    • Claudia

      amen

  • Linda L

    1. Evan
    2. Lambiel
    3. Takahashi
    4. Amodo

  • Beth

My OSotD was John Morris from the Canadian curling team. Don’t laugh until you’ve Googled.

    • AA

And he’s a fireman in his real life.

    • ks

We need a stud from every sport, every day! I agree he is fine

    • Big Dave

Beth, you are 100% correct. John Morris (aka Johnny Mo) is sex on a stick.

Plus, he’s single and apparently (you girls are gonna love this) straight. Add that to the fact that his regular job is fireman, and you’ve got your basic stud.

  • Cardsgal

Evan, Stephane and Daisuke rule! Which is bigger – Pleshenko’s nose or his ego? I cannot stand that guy!

  • Heat

Maelle Ricker! She kicked some ass and was so cute-giggling and totally humble after her win!

    • Heat

Forgot, Lambiel is definitely my male SOTD-HOT!

  • Aimzee

Evan is a stud as is Stephane Lambiel. Good choices!
