'Ugly Betty' Bites: 15 fiery quips from last night's episode, 'Smokin' Hot'!

Last night’s Ugly Betty had it all: A fire at the Queens home of the Suarez clan, Fashion Week, yet another guest spot from the always hilarious Kristen Johnston, male models, the reappearance of Suzuki St. Pierre, and one beautiful chandelier! (I don’t care if you don’t agree with me on that last one—Ignacio, in that instance, had good taste!) Without a doubt, some of the series’ best episodes have been the Fashion Week-themed hours. Sad that this is almost assuredly the last time we’ll see the Mode clan at Fashion Week. But, at least they head out of the fashion fest with quite the fiery bang!

As usual, I rounded up my favorite one-liners from the episode. Enjoy:

“Why are you being so weird? Oh, it’s fashion week. It makes you all anxious. Like a lesbian at a makeup counter.” —Amanda, to Betty

“Chocolate Éclair, how’s it hangin’?” —Amanda, greeting Claire upon her arrival at the Mode offices

“I don’t know how you can stand to live with Marc. Sometimes I just want to wrap my arms and legs around him like an octopus and squeeze him until he loves me back.” —Helen, professing her love for the very gay Marc

“With your crazy sewing skills and my crazy fashion sense—and a fist full of mood stabilizers—we could be a real design team.” —Amanda, to Helen, about becoming a design duo

“Are you happy? Now we’ve got Betty judging a fashion show! …This is about taste! Betty never met a paisley or plaid or awful butterfly belt she didn’t love!” —Wilhelmina, railing on about Betty’s questionable taste in fashion

“Is that a dimple? I could totally set up a tent in that dimple!” —Amanda, to Claire Meade’s rugged, cute, and long-lost son Tyler

“The key to sounding like you have good taste is hating everything. Just call it garish or ghoulish.” —Justin, trying to school Betty on what good taste is

“If you must look at her, please direct your gaze to her shins or her toes.” —Marc, telling Betty how to deal with Wilhelmina when presenting fashion to her

“Hey Magic Marker! Chipotle.” —Amanda, hilariously Marc and Betty

“Ladies and Germs, it’s Fashion Week. And you know what that means—I’m drunk! Kidding. Mostly.” —Suzuki St. Pierre, opening a piece about Fashion Week in the Mode offices

“What is this Zoolander? Walk like a man!” —Wilhelmina, critiquing Daniel on his runway walk

“So they said ‘No.’ Do I give up every time someone tells me ‘No’? ‘No, Helen, don’t do that.’ ‘No, Helen, don’t sleep there.’ ‘No, Helen, that’s not food!’ We’ll just show at Fashion Week next week. And until then, we’ll all live together like one giant, sexy family.” —Helen, after not getting the chance to show the line she and Amanda created at Fashion Week this year

“Aunt Betty, the fire is out and there is nothing left to see here, and if you don’t go to the Mode show, that’ll be two tragedies today!” —Justin, telling Betty that she has to go to the Mode fashion show

“I am a stylist. Rachel Zoe can suck it! There’s a new skinny bitch in town! What?!” —Amanda, after realizing that styling is her calling

“Betty, I will deny this if anyone ever asks, but you don’t always get it wrong. You shoes, for example—I don’t hate them. But next time, don’t pair them with that cheap hooker bag.” —Wilhelmina, finally giving Betty a compliment on her fashion

So, which j’adorable quip did I miss? Which is your fave? Did you love this episode?

I loved this episode! Amandas whole Rachel Zoe bit was the winner for me!!! Followed by Willie “hooker bag” and helen all together tying for second. I love the Willie/Betty moments too, i like the whole mentor-student dynamic they have!

I’m gonna miss these really funny quips when the series wraps up this season. I love the writers!

  • Edgar Friendly

This guy here, this is the guy.

  • Nihilistic

Good riddance to this banal and contrived show. There’s only so long you can appeal to the lowest common denominator and remain on the air.

    • SirLizard

Nihilistic, you are clearly just trying to get a rise out of people here. The only people who would bother to click on the link to read this article, then bother to post a comment, no less, are people who either adore the show, or douchebags who just want to upset the show’s fans. Your life must be so empty, hence your user name. But I think that “Pathetic” would be even more appropriate than “Nihilistic”.

    • @Nihilistic

Get a life Nihilistic, if you don’t like the show don’t comment. Slow day at the asylum perhaps???

    • bgrass13

Nihilistic, thanks for posting your unsolicited, unnecessary and unwelcome opinion of a show that you obviously loathe and therefore do NOT even watch. So, hey, how about leaving those of us who DO enjoy the show alone? And instead of ‘Nihilistic’, how about using ‘Narcissistic’? After all, it’s all about YOU, right?

    • imkoonta

Nihilistic, you are sad and the kind that likes reaction from others. Definitely white trash from the suburbs, go back to your pathetic life please.

  • JustMe

Loved the episode! I just really hope that Hilda’s BF didnt set that fire. Anyway, I didnt find Helen that funny the first time around but she has been hilarious this season. I would have to agree with the 1st poster that Amanda’a quip about Rachel Zoe was the best of the night with Willy’s zinger about the bag a very close second!!!

    • SirLizard

JustMe, this season IS Helen’s first time around. The character didn’t exist before the fourth season.

      • SirLizard

And they clearly want Hilda, and the audience, to think that Bobby might have set the fire, but they also showed Ignacio wondering if his botched electrical work may have done it, and they showed Justin wondering if it was his fault, because he has a secret cigarette habit. It was almost certainly Ignacio or Justin’s fault, but Hilda won’t find out until AFTER she accuses Bobby.

  • Pants

It’s driving me crazy, but what has the new designer, Marisa, been in before?

    • SirLizard

There’s no need to let it drive you crazy. Just ask, and the internet shall provide… Aubrey Dollar was on “Women’s Murder Club,” “Point Pleasant,” and a bunch of other shows. She has also been in a few movies.

      • Pants

It was totally Women’s Murder Club-thanks. I was too lazy to look it up :)

    • Mee

Her name is Aubrey Dollar and she played Cindy the reporter in the short-lived Women’s Murder Club tv show.

      • Linda

Aubrey Dollar was also on Guiding Light as Marina a few years back.

**SPOILER ALERT FOR LAST NIGHT’S EPISODE**

Does anyone know what Justin was hiding before he walked in the house towards the end? Was it a box of matches?

    • Andrea

It was cigarettes and a lighter.

    • Heat

I think it was a pack of smokes.

  • Blueboy

This episode was GREAT!!!! I can’t believe the show is ending. Season 4 is one of the best if not the best. I wish there was a way to save this show.

  • Zoe

I thought Justin had cigarettes at the end, and his smoking was possibly what started the fire (ha ha–shades of the blind school burning down on Little House). Remember, he’s trying to fit in with his new drama school friends. But it’s possible that Justin SET the fire, if what he had were matches, trying to help Hilda (like we suspect Bobby did, although I think that’s a red herring). I admit, I didn’t get a look at what Justin was holding to say for sure.

    • Marie

i think that it was Justin who caused the fire, but i don’t think that he did it intentionally. at the end of the episode, Justin was holding a pack of cigarettes AND a lighter in his hands. i know Hilda suspects Bobby, naturally, since they talked about it, but i don’t think Bobby did it.
overally, last nights espisode was really good. i’m definitely going to miss this show when its over.

      • Marisa

There are 3 possible causes of the fire:
        1. Justin and his careless smoking.
        2. Bobby and his arson skills.
        3. Ignacio and his poor electrician skills. (Remember the lights flickering and the whole thing when he was trying to wire the chandelier?)

      • eyeheartnyc

I think the electrictian hired to fix Ignacio’s work bungled the repair job. the wall behind the lightswitch that caused the fire. The wall looked really scorched to me.

    • Hudson

I don’t think Justin set the fire. The wall at the light switch to the chandelier (kinda cool chandelier) was all burnt in a pattern that makes it look like it started at the switch and raced up the wall, expanding as it went. But they set it up so that Justin and Ignacio both think that the fire was their fault and Hilda is going to think Bobby did it. I think it was the electrician that Ignacio finally hired but that issue won’t get cleared up for a while.

  • Mayzin1

I never thought Betty was ugly – even with braces. I never thought this program was funny with all its nasty quips and people degrading each others. The prime-time slot allows children/teens to gather fodder for bullying – this from ABC/Disney.

    • sally1018

Betty is NOT ugly and this show is hilarious!! I’m very sad to see it end.

      • Valley Girl

Ditto! The show never ceases to get a few chuckles out of me. Loved the Zoolander and Rachel Zoe quips!

    • Zoe

Oh my gosh. This post could not be farther from the truth. I admit that when Betty initially began, I was fearful of the same thing. But everyone on the show has the greatest respect for Betty–starting with Betty herself. The show has great lessons about doing your best, not worrying what anyone thinks of you, and valuing others for who they are rather than what they look like. Often, it’s obvious that Betty is far more beautiful than the shallow people around her. (Although most of the characters are less shallow than they used to be, as the show has been fleshed out over time.) Mayzin1, I simply cannot believe you have watched more than one episode of Ugly Betty or you would NOT have that opinion. I have NEVER once thought Ugly Betty inspired fodder for bullying!–I’m just rolling my eyes at that ridiculous comment! I just love people who pass judgment though they have little actual knowledge.

10pm is not primetime… get with it. Your children need to be in bed by 9pm, if your kids are up watching Ugly Betty or any other show for that matter, it is you who is failing as a parent. Stop trying to mandate what the rest of us watch or how programs should be. If you want your kids sheltered and kept from reality (life is cruel and people are mean in real life) then be a parent and do you job; you censor what they watch not what the rest of us want to watch.

  • AnnR

What a great show. ABC should swap Brothers and Sisters and Ugly Betty. UB would do great on Sunday night. THis is one of the most unique shows on so why cancel it? I can see why LOST is ending but this show? Come’on ABC. Please no more medical or cop or lawyer shows please.

  • KimR

Don’t Cancel Ugly Betty!!!!!!! There is nothing like it on TV. It is special. Like Glee is special. Out of the norm. It’s nice to have things to watch that are different/fun. Come on ABC!!

    • susan

I’m so disappointed that this show is being canceled, especially since they uprooted the cast and crew and moved them all to NYC. It’s unfair to them, and it’s a quality show–really beats the cops and medical and reality shows.

  • Rose

Why did they cancel this show? This season has been so good! Can’t Salma Hayek save this show? She’s married to a really rich guy AND she’s Salma Hayek!!!

  • Alex

I love Ugly Betty. Any chance we can get an Ugly Betty Movie? Come on, if SATC can get a movie, why not UB?

  • Reena

LAst night’s episode was so good I was laughing the whole time I hope that Daniel excepts Tyler and that scene with Tyler confronting Claire had a few tears in my eyes I am gonna miss this show…OH and to all the people making nasty comments just let us real fans enjoy what we have left of the show STOP HATIN!
